6:30 pm
is after midnight. finished and that is after midnight. some patchy rain in north—west england and wales later on. a mild night for many and for east anglia and the south—east clearing off long enough overnight for temperatures to fall to freezing in a few spots before a mainly cloudy and dry day and it will be the evening before rain gets in here but in england and wales, claudia, breezy, outbreaks of rain moving south, clearing from scotland as it brightens up and you might catch a shower, but most places won't. ahead of the area of patchy, showery rain at around 18 degrees in london and 15 in aberdeen. tomorrow evening, patchy rain reaching towards the south—east but elsewhere it is clearing up and that means a chilly, bright, quiet start on thursday morning with may be a touch of frost across northern areas and then on thursday southern england might see a little rain and the northern extent is uncertain but another weather system feeds rain back into northern and western parts of scotland. i mention the other

side of the autumn weather, the windy aside and by friday it picks up windy aside and by friday it picks up across all areas with sunny spells for many and heavy showers in western scotland and blustery across the uk this weekend. there will be rain or showers around but not all the time and some sunnier moments as well. thanks and that's all from the bbc news at six. the news continues here on bbc one as now its time tojoin our colleagues across the nations and regions for the news where you are, goodnight. hello and welcome along to sportsday — live from the bbc sport centre. here's what's coming up in the programme. on the brink of history. wales women have world cup qualification in their sights as they look to reach the finals for the first time ever. we'll be in glasgow as celtic face elimination from the champions league — they need to get something from their match with rb leipzig. and what next for w—series starjamie chadwick,
6:32 pm
as the season is brought to an abrupt end because of financial difficulties? going forwards now, i want to be able to do the best i can and progress in mixed conditions with the man. also coming up in the programme: we'll meet the bbc presenter learning to swim aged 28, as she looks to inspire other members of the south asian community to overcome barriers and do likewise. hello and welcome along to sportsday with me, paul scott. let's crack on. both wales and scotland are on the verge of qualifying for the women's world cup in australia and new zealand next year. for wales, a two—goal win in normal
6:33 pm
time in switzerland should be enough for them to reach their first ever world cup. it's a complicated equation with plenty of permutations. they kicked off around half an hour ago. these are live pictures, and you can see that wales still lead by 1—0. rhiannon roberts for the goal. a 2—0 victory could well be enough. live coverage of this one continues on the bbc iplayer. it is not going to be easy against switzerland, who of course were at the european championship this summer, but wales currently one goal to the good as they close in on a place in the world cup next year. it is a similar story for scotland as they look to reach their second world cup. they're also potentially 90 minutes away from qualifying. they host the republic of ireland at hampden park, with the winners in the frame to go straight to next year's tournament in australia and new zealand. joining us from there is jane dougall. jane, this is set up nicely, then?
6:34 pm
hopefully so, and there really is an air of expectation around the stadium, paul. the scotland manager has said in his programme notes, it is time to make our mark on the world, so no pressure ahead of this huge game for scotland women against the republic of ireland. they kick off at 8pm. and that means that they will know exact what is required of them, because the other matches in them, because the other matches in the playoff final and finished by then. as we mentioned, both scotland and wales women have to win their matches tonight. otherwise they are out of the running, but they also need other results to go their way too. here at hampden, we are expected to break the record crowd for a competitive women's game in scotland. that was only sent last week, when scotland beat austria in extra time to get to the playoff final. that was an abby harrison header in exit time that brought them there. erin cuthbert headed in
6:35 pm
too. but interestingly, the ireland coach used to be the scotland women's manager, so that should be a warm welcome here for her at hampden too. as we mentioned, there such a high around the women's game, isn't there, particularly following on from england's victory in the arrows in the summer? and some of the scotland players, like caroline weir, who used to play any wsl, watched some of her former team—mates win that trophy, and she watched on with slight frustration and envy as you can imagine. she has been speaking ahead of tonight's huge match. walking into hampden and seeing thousands excited to see us play football, — thousands excited to see us play football, it is massive, and, yeah, the girls— football, it is massive, and, yeah, the girls love it. we love playing at hampden, we love speaking to young _ at hampden, we love speaking to young girls after and seeing how inspired — young girls after and seeing how inspired they are and how passionate they are. _ inspired they are and how passionate they are, and like cuthbert talks
6:36 pm
on, they are, and like cuthbert talks on. we — they are, and like cuthbert talks on, we love it. we love that bit of playing _ on, we love it. we love that bit of playing for— on, we love it. we love that bit of playing for scotland. yeah, huge amount of hype around this match, but make no mistake, the republic of ireland will be bringing it too. they have never qualified for a world cup, so they will be hoping to win tonight as well, and they are higher bit dummett up in they are higher bit dummett up in the rankings then scotland —— they are higher up. let's switch to wales. it is to 1—0 for wales against switzerland in zurich. it is going to be tougher for them against switzerland in zurich. it is going to be tougherfor them because they are lowest in the rankings for these playoff finals. i will explain why in a minute. wales women have never qualified for a major tournament, so this is the closest they have ever come up they will want to emulate what they did tonight in switzerland to get there. let's explain the permutations. there are three playoff final
6:37 pm
matches tonight. the other one is portugal against iceland. so there are six countries and all vying to qualify. of the three winners out of those three matches, two will automatically get to the world cup, but that is dependent on their rankings in the playoff finals so far. got me? we are nearly there. the third winner will have to go to another playoff final, and i will take place in february in new zealand. it is an inter—confederation playoff. so at the moment, because wheels are lowest in the standings, that could be them even if they win tonight. as for scotland, they are a bit higher “p for scotland, they are a bit higher up in the rankings, so they want to hope that wales do them a favour by beating switzerland, pushing them out of contention and they want to hope that portugal do them a favour by beating iceland and putting them out of contention. so, yes, it is complicated, but essentially both wales women and scotland women must
6:38 pm
win. otherwise it is finished for them for the world cup.- win. otherwise it is finished for them for the world cup. yeah, jane, ou need them for the world cup. yeah, jane, you need fingers. — them for the world cup. yeah, jane, you need fingers, toes, _ them for the world cup. yeah, jane, you need fingers, toes, and - them for the world cup. yeah, jane, you need fingers, toes, and atticusl you need fingers, toes, and atticus — you need all of it to keep cross this one! wales from 1—0, jane, thank you very much. england, who have qualified for the world cup with a match to spare, are playing czech republic in a friendly at brighton's amex stadium. lucy bronze could make her 100th senior appearance tonight. the 30—year—old right—back, who made her senior international debut nine years ago, previously thought injuries might stop herfrom reaching the milestone. bronze, who signed for barcelona from manchester city injune, has scored 11 goals in her 99 england appearances but will be taking this one in her stride. i guess i am not that sentimental. it is obviously a huge achievement and i've always celebrated any player that has reached 100 or 50 or their first cap, player that has reached 100 or 50 or theirfirst cap, or the player that has reached 100 or 50 or their first cap, or the likes of
6:39 pm
jill and their first cap, or the likes of jilland fara, who their first cap, or the likes of jill and fara, who have done a crazy amount of caps, but, yeah, it is another game for me if i do play. she will play! it another game for me if i do play. she will play!— she will play! it is obsolete huge achievement, _ she will play! it is obsolete huge achievement, but _ she will play! it is obsolete huge achievement, but again - she will play! it is obsolete huge achievement, but again i - she will play! it is obsolete huge achievement, but again i think. she will play! it is obsolete huge achievement, but again i think itj achievement, but again i think it is like any other achievement that i have had in my career. it is something i will look back on when i retired and think, that was amazing. but right now, it's another game. staying with football, and moving to the men's game, manchester city can qualify for the knockout stages of the champions league tonight if they win at fc copenhagen. they started without erling haaland. rodri had a goal disallowed, after var spotted that the ball had hit riyad mahrez*s hand in the buildup. city were then given a penalty for handball thanks to var, but mahrez*s spot—kick was saved by kamil grabara... ..before var intervened again — sergio gomez was sent off for a professionalfoul. it is currently 0—0 at half—time.

well, in group f, celtic are on the cusp of elimination. they haven't won yet and are bottom of the group, but a victory at home to rb leipzig tonight could keep their hopes of progressing alive. kheredine idessane is there for us. is it now or never for the hoops? it pretty much is time to deliver for— hoops? it pretty much is time to deliver for celtic, _ hoops? it pretty much is time to deliver for celtic, and _ hoops? it pretty much is time to deliver for celtic, and the - hoops? it pretty much is time to deliver for celtic, and the funny l deliver for celtic, and the funny thing is if they win the next two matches, they will qualify for the last 16. they have to beat our beliefs at home. but also to get their first win beliefs at home. but also to get theirfirst win on beliefs at home. but also to get their first win on the beliefs at home. but also to get theirfirst win on the board —— rb leipzig to make up for last week's defeat. then the rouble be wide open. it would set up a scenario where if celtic to win tonight, next match they play will be at home to shakhtar donetsk, and if celtic win and real madrid win again, celtic would be through. it is that type in this group. the first things first, they've got to take care of business

three—match warm—up mini—series against australia tommorow morning, as their preparations for the t20 world cup continue. all—rounder sam curran says the confidence from winning these games will help. i think we definitely want to enact all these games. you take that momentum into the world cup and we might be a macro they are warm ups, you could say that, but when you step over the line, you take away that warm—up feel, you put your practice into game mode, and we took some great confidence from the other night. england have named the players who have been awarded a central contract, with test wicket keeper ben foakes and white ball all rounder liam livingstone being given deals for the first time. opener alex lees isn't on the list, though. jofra archer is, despite being injured for more than a year. the fast bowler was expected to come back from an elbow injury at the start of the summer but then suffered a stress fracture in his back. archer hasn't played an international match since march

2021, but england's decision to give him a contract suggest they're hopeful he'll contribute in the next year. 380 players and coaches across english grassroots football were handed bans last season for attacking or threatening referees and match officials. fa reports show a catalogue of abuse against officials in youth and adult football. fixtures in the merseyside youth football league have been cancelled this weekend in a protest of what they call "multiple incidents of inappropriate and threatening behaviour". sanctions for last season's incidents ranged from 112—day bans to eight years. paul field, president of the referees football association, says more needs to be done to protect officials. we are very vulnerable at grassroots. we usually drive securely to a game on a sunday, so we are one person amongst 20, 30, a0 people on the touch lines, so we are in a

vulnerable position when we get there. we also are troubled by some of the punditry that is on tv, does not fully help us. something might be set on the previous evening. as soon as you pull up on the car park, people are listening to condense who are incorrect, and really do not help us in that, so let's have that educational piece about what it looks like and also we could really do with support from all the football family, including the psa, on behaviour at any level —— pfa. it has a massive impact on grassroots football. after an incredible year of football in the women's domestic leagues and major international tournaments, the vote for the bbc women's footballer of the year is now open, with five nominees vying to be your champion. today, we focus on france and lyon defender wendie renard.
