tonight at ten... three become two. borisjohnson drops out of the race to be tory leader and prime minister, leaving rishi sunak and penny mordaunt in the running. mrjohnson said he got the required nominations but says now is not the right time. rishi sunak is now the clear frontrunner. the latest twist in a week of many twists and turns has come in the last hour and it means we could have a new prime minister is soonest tomorrow. we'll be asking what is now more likely, a contest or a coronation? also on the programme... cementing his place at the top, china's president xi will have a third term in power, the first to do so xijinping has become the most powerful leader in china in decades,

after being given a third term as leader of the communist party. hello and welcome to bbc world news. the uk is tonight guaranteed to have its third new prime minister in three months after borisjohnson declared, in the last hour, that he will not run, despite claiming to have had enough mps nominating him. it leaves the way clear for the former chancellor rishi sunak who today formally entered the contest, and who is presently the clear frontrunner. he joins the leader of the commons penny mourdant in the race. borisjohnson has released a statement after saying he won't stand.
10:02 pm
and he ends his statement saying . our political correspondent damian grammaticas has been speaking to my collague david eades. dramatic one that has been speculated about. people talking about the idea that borisjohnson might be reluctant to go forward with this unless he was very clear that he would be in a commanding position in what has become absolutely obvious over the weekend is that he's not. rishi sunak is the who has garnered far more public nominations, public support from mps. interestingly, just the evening a short time ago, mrjohnson*s own backers had been putting out in a message claiming he has reached, possibly reach this hundred mp level leader to be in the contest

tomorrow. but even at that level... they have been questions about that because the public nomination or the public support declaration we had is just over 50. so quite a lot short. any questions about whether boris johnson would go ahead if you see them behind. now we have seen this message that is just come through from him, interestingly na, he does say that he reached out to both rishi sunak and penny mordaunt because i hope we can come together in the national interest. we're sadly not been able to work out a way to do this with up we know there were these two key meetings that won today with penny mordaunt, one yesterday with rishi sunak. it seems in both mrjohnson may have been seek accommodation. flan in both mrjohnson may have been seek accommodation.— in both mrjohnson may have been seek accommodation. can you give our seek accommodation. can you give your support _ seek accommodation. can you give your support to _ seek accommodation. can you give your support to me. _ seek accommodation. can you give your support to me, effectively - seek accommodation. can you give | your support to me, effectively and not stand yourself? in terms of penny morton, at least. it not stand yourself? in terms of penny morton, at least. it seems to ut u-

joining me now is conservative mp david morris — he was backing borisjohnson in the leadership race. welcome to bbc news with up how disappointed are you that mrjohnson has chosen to pull out of the contest? i has chosen to pull out of the contest? ., , ., has chosen to pull out of the contest?— has chosen to pull out of the contest? ., , ., ., contest? i was on a meeting with boris and they — contest? i was on a meeting with boris and they deemed _ contest? i was on a meeting with boris and they deemed not - contest? i was on a meeting with boris and they deemed not so . contest? i was on a meeting with i boris and they deemed not so long ago, within the past hour. i've got to say that i was absolutely flabbergasted. it's just one of those occasions where you don't believe it's really happening. however, it's time for grown—ups, backing rishi. i backed him last time. i've got loyalty to boris johnson and you've got to go with where your heart is. i've backed up boris and i'll boris isn't doing it, i'm going over to rishi. i think rishi will be a fine prime minister. i've done many interviews of the past two days and i've never said

what did strike me from this statement that borisjohnson put out that he said he would be very well to lead the conservatives a general election in 202a. what does that indicate that he might be thinking about how rishi sunak might be getting along in the next couple years? because you have to be the leader of the party to lead them into a general election. i leader of the party to lead them into a general election.- leader of the party to lead them into a general election. i think it all honesty _ into a general election. i think it all honesty that _ into a general election. i think it all honesty that boris _ into a general election. i think it all honesty that boris gave - into a general election. i think it all honesty that boris gave this. into a general election. i think it| all honesty that boris gave this a lot of thought. he decided to reach the conclusion that he did personally, i would still like to see boris and government, somewhere in government, being constructive, being positive and bringing his talents to the table. i do believe him that all of parliament on my side of the benches should bring all the talents together in do the best at what they could do. i've always been that way. i'm absolutely certain that in some way there will be room at the table for boris johnson under a rishi sunak

really just get far in the lead now that we should reallyjust get on with making richie the prime minister. i know that a lot of members will be screaming at the screen after me saying that. the reality is, it can be between two candidates. if penny mordaunt does get 102 votes, it remains to be seen. we've got to... time is of the essence and we've now got to, i think sit down and be very pragmatic and mature about this and say ok, who is going to win this, let'sjust get on say ok, who is going to win this, let's just get on with it. i say ok, who is going to win this, let'sjust get on with it.— let'sjust get on with it. i wonder whether it _ let'sjust get on with it. i wonder whether it you _ let'sjust get on with it. i wonder whether it you might _ let'sjust get on with it. i wonder whether it you might feel - let'sjust get on with it. i wonder i whether it you might feel personally let down by borisjohnson. you put your name to his race, as did many other people as far as we're aware. and yet, don't you think he was sort of touring with the idea john is flexing his muscles and showing what he could do? ida. flexing his muscles and showing what he could do?— he could do? no, i don't think he was toying _ he could do? no, i don't think he was toying with _ he could do? no, i don't think he was toying with the _ he could do? no, i don't think he was toying with the idea. - he could do? no, i don't think he | was toying with the idea. he want he could do? no, i don't think he i was toying with the idea. he want to come back on a holiday if he did. i
