hello and welcome to sportsday. england's women are bidding for a place in the semi—finals of the rugby world cup later, as they take on australia in a crunch match in auckland. they're niow the only home nation left in the tournament, after wales followed in scotland's footsteps, going out at the group stage, after another heavy defeat by defending champions new zealand. jo currie was there. the other side of the world up against the defending champions in their back yard for a place in the semifinals. wales women would need all the support they can get. after pleasantries were exchanged, wales found themselves with an early chance, which they wasted. opportunities like that wouldn't come around very often,
6:33 pm
as the black ferns started to find their feet... and the width of the pitch. as time and time again, they found themselves in at the corner as they built up a commanding lead. there was a change of ends, but no change of tactic from the world champions. that's portia woodman*s 20th world cup try — a new record for the tournament. absolutely sumptuous! under the lights, the black ferns looked very much at home, in a performance that was hard to fault, whilst wales found themselves outmuscled and outmanoeuvred, as new zealand put on a show worthy of the packed—out crowd. they'll now move onto the final four, where they'll face france. for wales, there's now a long flight home. this result will hurt but, for many, it will be seen as the beginning of the journey for wales women, after the welsh rugby union only offered them full—time contracts just a few months ago. what this result will do, though, is show them how much further

still need to go they are to close the gap on the best in the world. jo currie, bbc news, ballarat. so wales head home having registered just one victory from four. they did edge scotland in their opener, but allowed australia to run away with a win in the pool stages, and suffered two heavy defeats to the black ferns. but captain hannahjones says she's proud of what her side has achieved. no regrets. before coming out, i asked the girls to give it their all, show some colour and some hard and we definitely showed it. new zealand is definitely stepped up in the last pool game and they're off load game is absolutely insane. but they didn't come through us, they had to come round us, and that is testament to our defence. so france next for the black ferns, after they thrashed italy 39—3. joanna grisez was the star performer for france, with a hat—trick of tries, to book her side's place in the last four of the tournament. closer to home, then, and the rugby league world cup, where england enjoyed their biggest

but england showed no mercy. no, you are absolutely right, a record—breaking score, it was in fact the scoreline that many had anticipated. it was perhaps the scoreline many greek fans feared. for greece, it was more about the occasion. they have been a wonderful addition to this world cup. there were lovely scenes at the end between their fans and players as they really celebrated the journey they really celebrated the journey they have been on. the greek players previously have said their appearance money from this world cup will be ploughed back into the greek rugby league federation as they continued to build the sport in greece. as for england, i havejust come from the english press conference whether head coach has been very focused indeed. he said, there is no big celebrations this evening. he was asked, as a proud wigan, will next week's quarterfinal at wigan be his proudest moment, as england head home. she said, it will be fine, it would be great, but what
6:38 pm
he is focused on is the final, that will be his proudest moment and that is very much the focus inside the england camp. that is the mindset, they are looking at the final. let's hear from someone inside that england camp, man of the match, salford's marc sneyd. we try to play a certain way, with one eye on next week. but it was quite hard to do come up with the way that we ended up playing. and we were racking up points on a regular basis and it was quite hard to get some kind of momentum is probably not the right word, but some practice in basically for next week. but obviously, to put the scoreline on that in a world cup, we ate going to complain, we are going to enjoy and be happy about it. the to complain, we are going to en'oy and be happy about mi to complain, we are going to en'oy and be happy about it. the hard work starts now. — and be happy about it. the hard work starts now. but _ and be happy about it. the hard work starts now, but you _ and be happy about it. the hard work starts now, but you can't _ and be happy about it. the hard work starts now, but you can't help - and be happy about it. the hard work starts now, but you can't help but. starts now, but you can't help but feel with that result today, there will be added expectation on england to go the distance, what has the

a busy day in the premier league. graham potter's return to brighton as chelsea manager didn't go according to plan. spurs were under pressure on the south coast too, as they squeezed past bournemouth, but it's manchester city who sit top of the table after a 1—nil win at leicester, and no erling haaland in sight. joe lynskey was watching. manchester city needed a plan. for the first time this season, they had no erling haaland. the top flight top scorer unfit and left out. so instead, at leicester, they went with julian alvarez. instead, at leicester, they went withjulian alvarez. a bright argentine forward, but without the strike rate of the norwegian. if city were casual, leicester were resolute. they had gone three games without conceding, now set to block each route to goal. city's aim had to be perfect. with one sublime shot, kevin sabrina ticked the lock. he found the one part of gold
