not a national holiday here, it is not celebrated in a national way, but a lot of young people more and more have been coming to these areas to celebrate it because they think it is nice fun, an opportunity to wear costumes and enjoy and have fun. so it has been getting more popular among the younger crowds. but normally, not celebrated as a family or bigger, wider, nationwide. i don't know if you have been keeping across social media and what has been happening online, but what has been happening online, but what has the reaction been on social media in korea today, south korea? i think everyone is very shocked, people didn't understand how this could happen or why it mostlyjust shocked and in disbelief. theyjust don't understand why or how or what. people just click yes, they are just in disbelief. people just click yes, they are 'ust in disbelief.— in disbelief. well, it is really tood to in disbelief. well, it is really good to talk _ in disbelief. well, it is really good to talk to _ in disbelief. well, it is really good to talk to you, - in disbelief. well, it is really good to talk to you, thank.

stampede. more on that is always on our website. stampede. more on that is always on ourwebsite. but stampede. more on that is always on our website. but now, stampede. more on that is always on ourwebsite. but now, it stampede. more on that is always on our website. but now, it is time on bbc news to go live to our sports centre the sports day. hello and welcome to sportsday. i'm holly hamilton. coming up on tonight's programme... more woe for wales, as they crash out of the rugby world cup, after a masterclass from holders new zealand. still unbeaten — england race into the quarter—finals of the rugby league world cup, with a record win over greece. no haaland, no problem — manchester city top the table with victory over leicester. and georgia taylor—brown defends her super league triathlon series title in style.
7:37 pm
good evening and welcome to tonight's programme. england's women are bidding for a place in the semi—finals of the rugby world cup later, as they take on australia in a crunch match in auckland. they're now the only home nation left in the tournament, after wales followed in scotland's footsteps, going out at the group stage, after another heavy defeat by defending champions new zealand. jo currie was there. the other side of the world up against the defending champions in their back yard for a place in the semifinals. wales women would need all the support they could get. after pleasantries were...exchanged, wales found themselves with an early chance, which they wasted.
7:38 pm
0pportunities like that wouldn't come around very often, as the black ferns started to find their feet and the width of the pitch. as time and time and time again, they found themselves in at the corner, as they built up a commanding lead. there was a change of ends, but no change of tactic from the world champions. that's portia woodman*s 20th world cup try — a new record for the tournament. absolutely sumptuous! under the lights, the black ferns looked very much at home, in a performance that was hard to fault, whilst wales found themselves outmuscled and outmanoeuvred, as new zealand put on a show worthy of the packed—out crowd. they'll now move on to the final four, where they'll face france. for wales, there's now a long flight home. this result will hurt but, for many, it will be seen as the beginning of the journey for wales women, after the welsh rugby union only offered them full—time contracts just a few months ago.
7:39 pm
what this result will do, though, is show them how much further they still need to go if they are to close the gap on the best in the world. jo currie, bbc news, whangarei. so wales head home having registered just one victory from four. they did edge scotland in their opener, but allowed australia to run away with a win in the pool stages, and suffered two heavy defeats to the black ferns. but captain hannahjones says she's proud of what her side has achieved. no regrets. before coming out, i asked the girls to give it their all, show some colour and some heart, and we definitely showed it. new zealand definitely stepped up from their last pool game and their offload game
7:40 pm
is absolutely insane. but they didn't come through us, they had to come round us, and that is testament to our defence. so france next for the black ferns, after they thrashed italy 39—3. joanna grisez was the star performer for france, with a hat—trick of tries to book her side's place in the last four of the tournament. closer to home, then, and the rugby league world cup — where england enjoyed their biggest ever victory at this tournament, with a crushing 91t—1t win over greece. dominic young starred with four first—half tries to ease the hosts into the quarter—finals as group winners. adam wild is at bramhall lane, as this world cup reaches the steel city, a moment for england to show their mettle. they'd never played greece before. england had never played here before. for all, a breath of fresh air. greece just being at this world cup is a triumph. the sport was illegal there untiljust a few months ago. still, for england, not a day to dwell on sentiment. matty lees giving them the lead. and only 2.5 minutes played and i think the inevitable is already beginning to unfold. whilst the result was rarely in doubt, greece would have their moment. siteni taukamo and yet
7:41 pm
another moment of history. whoa, the greeks have a score! but england also have heroes making a name for themselves — a further nine tries, including a second for ryan hall, and a special debut moment for kai pearce—paul. a record score, on an historic afternoon at bramall lane. and so, a win that was as convincing as many might have expected. but despite all the excitement, england won't be an absolute thrashing, it is hard not to get carried away. adam is still at bramall lane this evening. good evening, england were always going to be the favourites against a

team like greece, but they really didn't show them any mercy. yes. team like greece, but they really didn't show them any mercy. yes, a record score — didn't show them any mercy. yes, a record score line, _ didn't show them any mercy. yes, a record score line, one _ didn't show them any mercy. yes, a record score line, one that - didn't show them any mercy. yes, a record score line, one that perhaps| record score line, one that perhaps many england fans might have predicted. it is one i suspect many greece fans will have feared. but in many ways, for greece, it was more about the occasion and their presence at this tournament. there was a lovely reaction inside bramall lane when they scored a try early on in the game. there were great scenes at the full—time hooter when players went over to thank those supporters who have cheered them on throughout this, theirfirst who have cheered them on throughout this, their first world who have cheered them on throughout this, theirfirst world cup. those players have already said their appearance fee at this world cup will be waived and that money will be ploughed back into the greek rugby league federation to help them to continue to grow the game in that country. so their world cupjourney will continue in the future. as for england, i went to the english press
7:43 pm
conference earlier and the england head coach shaun wane very focused indeed. he said there will be no big celebrations for the players this evening. he said there will be no beers for the players this evening. he was asked by one journalist if, as a proud wigan resident come at the quarterfinal will be his proudest moment as england head coach. he said he is looking forward to that match, but what will be his proudest moment will be the world cup final, that is the focus, that very much the mindset within this england camp. let's hear more from inside that england camp. this is this afternoon's man of the match, salford's marc sneyd. we tried to play a certain way, with one eye on next week. but it was quite hard to do, with the way that we ended up playing. and we were racking up points on a regular basis and it was quite
7:44 pm
hard to get some kind of...momentum is probably not the right word, but some practice in basically for next week. but obviously, to put a scoreline on that in a world cup, we ain't going to complain, we are going to enjoy and be happy about it. you said the hard work starts now and it is hard not to get carried away when you look at that scoreline today and you imagine there will be even more expectation on england to go the distance in this competition, what has the reaction been like there? , , ., , ., there? yes, the expectations have alwa s there? yes, the expectations have always been _ there? yes, the expectations have always been high _ there? yes, the expectations have always been high on _ there? yes, the expectations have always been high on england, - there? yes, the expectations havei always been high on england, they are the hosts, they are one of the big three teams in rugby league and they have been growing ever since that opening day victory over samoa in newcastle and results like today, with the score lane we have seen, will only build those hopes even higher. shortly after the final whistle, i spoke to the former england international kevin brown. i asked him, given the scoreline, what could we take from today's game?
7:45 pm
we have learnt there are a lot of selection headaches. i think all the people in doubt for the quarterfinal have really put their hands up, marc sneyd in particular, the player of the match today was fantastic. but ijust feel we were up against it today to keep that momentum going and we did that. i'm very excited as a fan now and i think everybody should be. this team that hasjust produced nearly 100 points against greece, they could go all the way. shaun wane said to me before the competition he knew what his best 13 was going into the tournament. he told me earlier this week that he has changed his mind. you mentioned the likes of marc sneyd, but it is the entire squad performance in the group stages. yeah, i was really intrigued by the battle of the loose forward players. i perhaps was leaning towards morgan knowles before the competition, but victor radley has been terrific. he came off with a bit of an injury doubt today,
7:46 pm
but every player could get in on merit and whatever player gets in, that's no bad decision. out of 24, only 17 were played, but whoever plays against peppering but whoever plays against papua new guinea is in with a good shout. a word on the greeks, an extraordinary tournament for them in so many ways. extraordinary, where they have come from. they were always up against it today, there are some amateur players, but ijust thought in terms of energy and effort, that is all you can ask and they were first class. a lot of them have got a few injuries today, but ijust thought it was inspirational where they have come from, to play on the big stage, there are a lot of greek fans here, what it will do for the game in greece is magnificent. so that was the former england international kevin brown speaking to me shortly after the end of the game this afternoon. that was the first of three matches in the rugby league world cup. the second saw scotland playing their final pool game. they went into that with very, very slim hopes of making it through to the quarterfinal, having been defeated in their opening two matches. the damage really was done
7:47 pm
in that opening match against italy, that opening defeat. they have lost again today. they were beaten 30—14 by fiji at kingston park in newcastle. and that ends their world cup journey. newcastle. and that ends their world cupjourney. they newcastle. and that ends their world cup journey. they did newcastle. and that ends their world cupjourney. they did manage newcastle. and that ends their world cup journey. they did manage to score three tries so they went out on somewhat of a high against a very good fiji side. but they are now, their competition is now over. fiji go through to the quarterfinals, a second place in pool b, behind, we assume, australia, who havejust kicked off in the last few minutes against italy. they are currently 8-0 against italy. they are currently 8—0 up. against italy. they are currently 8-0 u -. * . against italy. they are currently 8-0 u. * . ~ against italy. they are currently 8-0 uh, “ ., . ., against italy. they are currently 8-0u. ., . ., ., 8-0 up. adam wilde, from bramall lane, 8-0 up. adam wilde, from bramall lane. thank— 8-0 up. adam wilde, from bramall lane, thank you. _ 8-0 up. adam wilde, from bramall lane, thank you. football. - a busy day in the premier league. graham potter's return to brighton as chelsea manager didn't go according to plan. spurs were under pressure on the south coast too, as they squeezed past bournemouth, but it's manchester city who sit top of the table
7:48 pm
after a i—nil win at leicester, and no erling haaland in sight. joe lynskey was watching. manchester city needed a plan. for the first time this season, they had no erling haaland. the top—flight top scorer unfit and left out. so instead, at leicester, they went with julian alvarez. a bright argentine forward, but without the strike rate of the norwegian. if city were casual, leicester were resolute. they had gone three games without conceding, now set to block each route to goal. city's aim had to be perfect. with one sublime shot, kevin de bruyne picked the lock. he found the one part of goal leicester couldn't cover. city were on course to go top, but they would face some response. youri tielemans smacked the crossbar, but leicester struggled to make chances. city almost gave them one. but for most of this game,
7:49 pm
the champions had full control. a i—0 win meant that on their day without erling, now they'll talk about kevin. it wasn't a happy return to brighton for graham potter, as his chelsea side were hammered 4—1 by his former club. it's brighton boss roberto de zerbi's first win in charge of the seagulls at the sixth attempt, and the first time chelsea have ever lost a league game against brighton. so the first defeat of the graham potter era at chelsea, with pascal gross' late goal in injury time wrapping up the win. the scoreline and the defeat is a painful one. we suffered at the start of the game, we couldn't really recover. we had some opportunities ourselves in the first half, but once the crowd were so engaged and so up for the match, it was a difficult one for us. the scoreline was painful, certainly at half time. we responded a little bit in the second half.
7:50 pm
0verall, credit and congratulations to brighton, they played a good game and did what they did well, especially first half. spurs needed a stoppage—time winner to get past bournemouth this afternoon. antonio conte's side were 2—nil down in the second half, but goals from ryan sessegnon, ben davies and then rodrigo bentancur in the 93rd minute completed the comeback. that's now three defeats on the bounce for gary 0'neil, with bournemouth nowjust three points clear of the relegation zone, but relief for the spurs boss. callum wilson scored twice, as newcastle beat aston villa 4—0 at st james' park. the world cup hopeful grabbed the first two goals before joelinton added a third, and the in—form miguel almiron rounded off the scoring with a superb strike from outside the area. after the game, wilson insisted that having gareth southgate watching from the stands did not add extra pressure. you step over the white line and you
7:51 pm
focus on newcastle, to be honest. for me, i've been asked numerous times about the world cup and, yes, i would love to go, but it was time for me to do talking on the football field at the end of the day. yeah, if that's good enough, so be it. all i could do was try and perform for newcastle and see where it gets me. elseswhere today, brentford and wolves drew one—all while crystal palace beat southampton i—nil. everton held to a goalless draw by fulham, while liverpool are a goal down to leeds at anfield. in the scottish premiership, rangers eased the pressure on manager giovanni van bronckhorst with an emphatic lt—i win over aberdeen. elsewhere, ten—man dundee united
7:52 pm
slipped to the bottom of the table after defeat to motherwell. elsehwhere, there were wins for hibs and stjohnstone. let's have a quick look at some of the day's other sports stories now. george russell set the fastest lap in the final practice session before qualifying for the mexico grand prix, with his mercedes teammate lewis hamilton in second. in the cricket, new zealand remain top of their group at the t20 world cup, following a 65—run victory over sri lanka. and in rugby union, george head's stoppage—time try secured harlequins a 26—24 win over london irish and saw them move up to third in the premiership. georgia taylor—brown has retained her super league triathlon title. she beat the usa's taylor spivey in the season—ending race in saudi arabia to wrap up the win. britain'sjonny brownlee also finished third overall in the men's series. michael redford was watching the action. in a desolate desert in saudi arabia, a tale of two taylors. georgia taylor—brown and taylor spivey, level on points heading into the final race. but would the trophy go
7:53 pm
to the uk or the us? well, in the very early stages, that seemed a straightforward question. taylor—brown gaining a 22—second lead after the first of three swims. but it was never going to be that easy. spivey raced back into touch and back into contention. it was a battle that had onlyjust begun. back came taylor—brown, going into the water on round two with an eight—second lead — it was gone by the time they came out. from there, the pair would stick together, toing and froing, but never far apart. and so, after five cities and five races, it came down to a final run. where taylor—brown showed her class, pulling away not only from spivey, but from the rest of the field too. her third win of the series. once again, georgia taylor—brown is your champion here! the title defended. it means an awful lot. it's been a flipping long season, sojust one more race left now,
7:54 pm
but we have had five incredible races with super league and i'm just so happy to come out on top. while all the celebration centred on taylor—brown, a moment to remember for her british team—mate — non stanford crossing the line in 12th place and, with it, bringing an end to her illustrious career. and a celebration for jonny brownlee, who finished sixth in the overall standings at the start, he produced a stunning brownlee buoyant, taylor—brown brilliant. a day to remember for british triathlon. and a huge event to come this evening. and a huge event to come this evening. katie taylor's unbeaten record and status as undisputed lightweight champion will both be on the line this evening, as the irishwoman faces karen elizabeth carabajal in london. taylor is already eyeing up her next fight — she's set her sights on a homecoming in dublin before the end of her career.
7:55 pm
my dream would be just to headline a huge fight back home in ireland. in my six years as a professional boxer, i haven't a chance to headline a huge show back home, so that would be absolutely huge. there's no shortage of big names out there and it could be any of those big names, i guess. imagine croke park at 80,000 people, that's a huge event, probably one of the biggest in women's boxing history so far. i think you could sell out a huge stadium like that. that would be absolute huge and it is a very realistic goal and i hope that it happens sometime next year. most importantly, ijust want to be involved in the biggest fights possible, with as many fights, to continue to make history in the sports. yes, i just want to compete to inspire the next generation. i know i am stepping in the ring against an unbeaten young fighter, i have to be at my very best
7:56 pm
in the ring on saturday night. i prepare for these kind of fights as much as i prefer of fights as much as i prepare for the big fights. my mindset is the same. my training has been exactly the same, my work ethic is completely the same. i am just excited to showcase what i can do on saturday night and i will produce another big performance. it's going to be a fantastic night. i'm hoping for another victory and as long as i keep those belts and remain undefeated and undisputed, that is the main thing. finally, names and colours are very important to sports fans, so when super league newcomers leigh centurions announced they were changing their name to leigh leopards and possibly ditching their cherry and white colours, it divided opinion. richard askam has visited the town to find out more. a record—breaking season, and now a break with 2.5 decades of tradition. for a club talking about a new era
7:57 pm
and rising ambition. it is not just it is notjust a name change. it is a fully thought out process, there's a new website, a new kit and new merchandise, the whole match day experience and entertainment. so everything just pointed towards doing what we are doing. a decision that won't have been taken lightly. leigh's history runs very deep, as founder members of the sport and twice challenge cup winners. and certainly in leigh, the move from traditional centurions tops to leopardskin — these are not the jerseys, by the way — has really divided opinion. yes, i like that. i didn't know who leigh centurions are. i don't care, i still like the picture. i i think they are going to lose a lot of fans. i don't like it, ijust don't like the name leopards, it is
7:58 pm
awful. it looks all right to me. and on social media, mock musical links and mickey takes have been everywhere, with spoofs of manchester city's haaland as the new signing of the leopards, suggestions for new rugby boots, several for a new mascot, with even a television star of big cat rescue and tiger king fame having her say. there are going to be a few clubs in super league that will need big cat rescue next year now. keep believing and you will do grrr—eat! for some, though, the change isn't quite as easy to take. like david madden, a fan of 35 years, who has a favourite tattoo. after 27 years of everybody taking the name in and rebranding it, it's a massive shock. are you going to get a leigh leopards on the other side? i'm not, no. i thought you might say that.
7:59 pm
i really do love it, i think it's what we needed as a club because when we go to big games or anything as a fan like the england matches, people think we are wigan fans because we have red and white shirts. and i think changing the shirts will give us our own identity. as for the club's owner, let's just say he's embracing the new look with what he wears and what he drives. a change to spots that the leopards hope will be a roaring success in super league. the lesser—spotted richard askam. that's all from sportsday. good night.
8:00 pm
this is bbc news. the headlines.... officials say 120 people have been killed in a stampede in the south korean capital seoul during halloween celebrations. it was very clear that there was just so many people here, probably the most i have ever seen in itaewon, and the crowds were just gathering more and more. russia pulls out from a crucial deal to export grain from ukrainian ports. the united nations say they're seeking explanation from moscow. the move follows russia blaming ukraine for a wave of drone attacks on the russian black sea fleet in occupied crimea. the household energy supplier 0ctopus energy has reached a deal to buy bulb, one of the companies which collapsed last year amid soaring wholesale gas and electricity prices.
