hello, i'm 0lly foster. here's what's coming up on sportsday this evening. human rights groups have slammed fifa for telling teams to just "focus on the football" in qatar. the red roses are fully focussed. we'll head live to new zealand ahead of their rugby world cup semi—final. it's the first of the quarterfinals at the rugby league world cup. can lebanon stop the reigning champions? also coming up in the programme... good evening. welcome along. injust over a fortnight,

the world cup in qatar will be under way. the tiny gulf state, the most controversial host in the history the tournament, says "everyone is welcome". human rights groups have contested that for the last 12 years since they were named as hosts, and today, fifa has been criticised for a letter that has been sent to all 32 competing nations, telling them to concentrate on football and not get involved in any protests. joe lynskey reports. the world cup starts here in 16 days, the stadium in the north of qatar where the hosts kick—off against ecuador. that's how the action fee for wants in focus. and a letter to all 32 nations, they asked that their sport isn't dragon to political or ideological battles —— dragged into. right now, football

it's very concerning for us to hear that so many fans are already thinking that they won't have that social outlet throughout winter. if attendance is dropped and people don't have the money, i think a ticket to the football or the money that you might spend on a pint or a programme or something like that is one of the costs that you would easily decide that's not the most important thing right now. that can have a very real effect. so, i think there are clubs who will be looking at this winter with really real concern, and we want clubs to survive and thrive and run a sustainable business. so, anything that clubs can do to keep the fans engaged and coming, we would applaud and we would support. and the cost of living crisis and its impact on recreational sport is the subject of this week's sports desk podcast. you can listen and subscribe to it now via bbc sounds.
