this is bbc world news. i'm lucy hockings live in doha where, within the last few minutes, england have stormed into a place in the world cup quarterfinals. the final score: england 3, senegal 0 at the al bayt stadium. a triumphant result, but it means england will be up against the defending champions france in the quarterfinals. that's alongside argentina and the netherlands, who are also through to the last 16. i'm samantha simmonds in london. the other main stories this hour... the group that represents train companies in the uk says it's offered unions a deal that could avert strikes before christmas. and iran's attorney general says the morality police — which enforces the strict islamic dress code — are being disbanded after a wave

of anti—government protests. hello and welcome to doha, where england have beaten senegal 3—0 to book their place against france in the quarterfinals of the world cup. jordan henderson put the three lions ahead after some great link up play between harry kane and jude bellingham. kane then took england one step closer to the quarterfinals on the stroke of half time, scoring after a brilliant move, before bukayo saka sealed the deal in the second half. england continue their run, which dates back to 1986, of never losing a game of football to african opposition. nesta mcgregor has been following the game at the al bayt stadium this evening.

been a lovely presents and they will be missed now are home. england will now face france in the quarterfinals on saturday after france beat poland 3—1 earlier. my colleague 0lly foster was outside the al thumana stadium to tell us how the game played out. poland not half as bad as we thought they were going to be. they limped through the group stages to set up this last 16 tie against the french, the strong favourites, of course. and it is the scoreline, the result that we expected. but it was very tight at half—time, 0livier giroud had given the french the lead just before the break, his 52nd goal for his country. and that sees him overtake the great thierry henry, so 0livier giroud a happy man this evening, he is now france's record goal—scorer. but you know what? mbappe is fast going to catch up and perhaps will one day hold that record and sell. —— hold that record himself. it was a far quieter second half for the first
9:11 pm
of 20 minutes or so, but then mbappe, you cannot keep a good man down. we were there, weren't we, in russia four years ago in moscow when mbappe really came to the fore, he was a teenager at that world cup in 2018, scoring four goals including in the final as well. well, he has now scored five in qatar, the first man to score that many goals before the age of 2a since the great pele. and, of course, everybody in the world of football, their thoughts are with pele who is very ill at the moment back home in brazil. but it was mbappe's night, two wonderful strikes to put the french 3—0. the poles kept at it and it was one of those ham. balls which glanced off a shoulder, arm, from upamecano, the french defender. -- it —— it was one of those handballs. they looked at var, they gave it to poland. hugo lloris, the french captain, actually saved the first effort but he was way off his line and robert lewandowski stepped
9:12 pm
up to make it, well, a bit of a consolation, that's all it was for poland. they never deserved to go through. so it's the french who go through 3—1. incidentally, hugo lloris, his 142nd appearance for france, that's a joint record with lilian thuram. so a night of records, but you just know the headlines on monday will be killian mbappe, another wonderful evening for him here in qatar, he's up to five for the tournament. 0lly foster. i'm joined now by balla traore, who supports both france and senegal butjoins us from dartford in england. i'm really curious to know, are you a little bit conflicted this evening orjust a little bit conflicted this evening or just devastated. a little bit conflicted this evening orjust devastated. the a little bit conflicted this evening orjust devastated.— a little bit conflicted this evening orjust devastated. the goal? i'm a little bit conflicted, _ orjust devastated. the goal? i'm a little bit conflicted, i _ orjust devastated. the goal? i'm a little bit conflicted, i had _ orjust devastated. the goal? i'm a little bit conflicted, i had to - orjust devastated. the goal? i'm a little bit conflicted, i had to say. i little bit conflicted, i had to say. —— orjust devastated for senegal? i'm disappointed for senegal but

9:17 pm
these latest strikes going ahead. the next national strikes involving the rmt union, about 40,000 rail workers across the country, are due to begin on the 13th of december, in just nine days. now, today for the first time the group representing the train companies' side of the dispute have made an offer to unions, to the rmt. now, they describe that as a framework where essentially there would be a 4% pay rise for this year, backdated, and a 4% pay rise for next year. however, that would depend on changes to working practices being agreed, they say, to be able to fund that pay rise. now, that includes things like changes to the way staff work at stations, who are currently on ticket offices, they would move to what the rdg described as multi—skilled roles and those ticket offices, some of them would close eventually. it also includes changes to the role of some staff on board the train
9:18 pm
and a move to more driver only operated trains, whether drivers operate the doors in more areas, because that is already in place in some areas. and also changes to the way rostering is done so that sunday working would be part of the contract and not just voluntary. so there is quite a few conditions involved in this offer, it not just about the pay. they are saying the pay offer comes with these conditions. it's not just transport workers in the uk planning strikes for the festive season. health unions are also considering similar action. the conservative party chairman, nadhim zahawi, has said the strikes were unfair at christmas. the general secretary of the royal college of nursing, pat cullen, gave us her reaction: (sot next) the chairman is playing what he considers a clever game. 0ur nurses know exactly what has caused the cost of living crisis and it's a decade of underpayment to our nurses, their pay falling
9:19 pm
by 20%, that has placed them in this position. it's not the issues with putin at this point in time that has caused the crisis in the nhs. so for the tory chairman to come out and say that is certainly not lost on my nursing colleagues, but i don't think it will be lost on the people of this country either. the reuters news agency is reporting reaction from the uk transport secretary on the rmt*s rejection of the rail delivery group's offer, saying unions should present the offer to members and call off a strike. that is the statement from the uk transport secretary. the iranian attorney general has said the authorities are moving to dismantle the country's so called morality police which enforce
9:20 pm
a strict islamic dress—code. it follows months of protest over the death of mahsa amini, a young woman who died in police custody, after being detained for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly. there's been no confirmation yet from the interior ministry, which is in charge of the morality police. siavash ardalan from the bbc persian service explains the significance of this announcement. it is significant if it is true, but the protesters initially, as the news came out this morning, was celebrating it as a sign that they had made an impact, that the government was in retreat. but as the dust settled from all those global headlines and it became more apparent that this is not exactly what it seems, the opposition now is a little bit more disappointed but, nevertheless, emboldened that they still need to press on. there are a few reasons that this news should be taken with a grain of salt. first of all, it was an offhand remark. if it was a huge retreat on the part of the government, they would have held a press conference. the government would have issued a communique, change of policy. but it was an offhand remark to a question asked by a reporter,
9:21 pm
"where are the morality police?" the morality police is nowhere to be seen after the death of mahsa amini, who died in their custody. so on the ground, it is making little difference. and what is important is the law that the morality police was tasked with enforcing, which is the mandatory hijab, is still in place. there is no sign that that law has changed. and even if that law were to change, as far as the protesters are concerned, the protesters have been demanding regime change all along, that's not enough, let alone the story about the disbanding of the morality police, which is not even still confirmed. and how widespread do the protests continue to be at the moment? they go through ebbs and flows, but they nevertheless are continuing. especially in the western provinces of balochistan and kurdistan, where you have ethnic minorities. but even in bigger cosmopolitan centres, every night, there are clashes between security forces and small groups of demonstrators who engage in confrontations, only to be disbursed and then to gather somewhere else. but the opposition has called
9:22 pm
for a three—day strike, starting from tomorrow. and they were initially emboldened by the story of this, thinking that the government has now retreated, so they smelt some weakness, so they feel good about what's going to happen tomorrow. do you feel that the opposition, as you call them, are more coordinated than they were at the beginning of these protests? no, i don't, because the opposition, when we're talking opposition, we're just loosely referring to decentralised groups of protesters. young people inside the country, without any central headquarters. the reference to the opposition really is either the reformists, who have beenjailed or discredited by the public, or we are talking about the diaspora opposition groups in exile, who don't seem to have that much of a commanding impact in representing a leadership for the iranians at this stage.we people living near the semeru volcano in indonesia are being evacuated and authorities

you can reach me on twitter, thank you can reach me on twitter, thank you for watching. hello, there. last week, the weather story was dominated with low cloud, mist and fog. was dominated with low this week, however, is quite a significant gear change to something a little bit more wintry. certainly turning colder. but yes, there's going to be a chance of snow. more on that in just a moment. widespread frost as well for all of us. so last week we were under the influence of this area of high pressure. but over the next few days we can track the isobars back to the north. the wind direction changing, and that will introduce this colder air. not quite there during monday. more of a northeasterly flow. monday will be a lot of low grey cloud. a cold day. some showers spilling off the east coast and filtering a little bit further west. not that much sunshine around. favoured spots, western scotland and northern ireland with highs of five to eight celsius.
9:27 pm
so, the wind direction starting to drag down that cold arctic air. as we move through tuesday, particularly tuesday night to wednesday. so for tuesday, the emphasis to the showers changes a little. along those exposed north coasts, still running along the east coast. and some pushing down through the irish sea as well. in between, there will be some sunshine around on tuesday. still another cold day. now those clear skies by day will lead to a very cold night. widespread temperatures down to minus two degrees. so a hard frost to greet pretty much all of us first thing on wednesday morning. and that's when we're going to start to see the risk of some snow showers. particularly into the far north of scotland. a veil of cloud sinking its way steadily south. central and southern areas the best of the sunshine. but the met office has issued an early warning for snow on wednesday. we could see as much as two to 10 cm settling even at lower levels as we go through the day. and it's turning noticeably colder on wednesday.
9:28 pm
temperatures struggling just a few degrees above freezing. factor in the wind, probably feeling more like —2 to —3 along those exposed northeastern areas. then as we move into wednesday we need to keep a close eye on the area of low pressure. the position of that low is going to influence where we are likely to see some wintry showers. but we could see some wintry showers through the southwest. and potentially along that east coast. if the low tracks a little bit further west. there would be more showers coming in further england. but again staying cold. —— coming further inland.
