thanks, darren. and that's bbc news at six on tuesday 6th december. it's time tojoin it's time to join our news team is where you are, goodbye. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm hugh ferris. our headlines this evening. a madrid—born moroccan sends his country through to their first world cup quafter final... world cup quafter final by beating spain... available, fit, but not picked. an extreme rarity for portugal, who drop ronaldo for their last 16 match against switzerland. and it's notjust kylian mbappe's france that have a record scorer in their ranks. we hear from the other forward england have to try and stop in their quarterfinal.

after a goalless. .. and cagey... 120 minutes... spain crumbled in the penalty shoot—out. they missed all three of the spot kicks they took... pablo sarabia hit the post... then carlos soler. .. and sergio busquets... the only survivor from their 2010 winning squad... had their efforts saved by the moroccan keeper bono. then it fell to achraf hakimi... a defender born in madrid... to score his side's fourth penalty... and send them through to the last 8 for the first time 3—0 in the shoot—out. in a tournament that represented a landmark for the arab world morocco*s win is extremely significant... but they're also an african nation with a chance to go further than any other. bbc africa's celestine karoney is in qatar. celestine this will be considered a victory for more than just morocco. this is a victory for morocco that will be celebrated on a much wider scale. * , ,., , will be celebrated on a much wider scale. * , , , will be celebrated on a much wider scale. absolutely this is a victory that will be _ scale. absolutely this is a victory that will be celebrated _ scale. absolutely this is a victory that will be celebrated in - scale. absolutely this is a victory that will be celebrated in africa | scale. absolutely this is a victory. that will be celebrated in africa as well as a whole, as a continent. in

absolutely. moroccan fans have made every moroccan game feel like a home match for their team. from the first game against and i was in the stadium sitting among a group of fans who told me they had just arrived at the airport about an hour or two before and had come directly to the match. we had met so many others that are painting the city read. they have turned up for their team and have said football is their blood. that is what one of them told us yesterday and that they are here for the team. you have to remember that because morocco is the only team left from the arab world saw a lot of qatar is, saudi arabia fans, tunisian fans havejoined in lot of qatar is, saudi arabia fans, tunisian fans have joined in and lot of qatar is, saudi arabia fans, tunisian fans havejoined in and out are moroccan fans. so marking games are moroccan fans. so marking games are like a home match for the d atlas lions. are like a home match for the d atlas lione— are like a home match for the d atlas mona-— are like a home match for the d atlas lions-— are like a home match for the d atlas lions. ., ~ i. . ., atlas lions. thank you so much for “oininu us atlas lions. thank you so much for joining usjust _ atlas lions. thank you so much for

we've got some snow showers, some icy stretches for some of us and everywhere is going to be seeing some pretty sharp frosts over the next couple of nights. so why is that? it's because our air mass is coming from the arctic, streaming down these northerly winds right across the uk. you can see the blue colours firmly right across the map. across northern scotland there could be two to ten centimetres of snow. the rest of this week, a chance of a few snow flurries for parts of eastern england, southern scotland, northern ireland, perhaps into wales and the south—west. a lower chance of seeing anything wintry elsewhere, but still some detail to be pinned down through the week ahead. we've got more snow showers across northern and eastern scotland overnight, even down to low levels. a few rain showers around the east coast of england too, but it is going to be a cold night. lowest temperatures for central and southern scotland, northern ireland into wales and northwest england, as well. should be just about above freezing in the south—east, but a cold start to wednesday wherever you are. through the day, plenty of blue sky and sunshine. still those rain showers for east anglia and around the east coast of england, as well. could be a little bit wintry for the north york moors, for instance.
