afternoon to you, it has gone from an exceptionally mild autumn to bitterly cold early winter weather, so it is a bit of a shock to the system, but for the foreseeable future it is set to remain cold with temperatures below the seasonal norm. there will be some icy stretches overnight. there could be a widespread shop frost on the many areas, for the next few nights. the winds quite a feature across the north of scotland. the snow showers, we can see. plenty of snow showers across the north and east of scotland, with some thunder. elsewhere around coastal areas there is a peppering, but for the much of the country as you can see it is a sunny, crisp afternoon, a cold one, but at least the sunshine will compensate. but it will not do that much for that temperatures, after that bitterly cold start. factor in the wind across northern areas and it will feel even colder. this evening and overnight, a cluster of

wintry showers across the north—east of england, may be spread southwards down towards the south—east, so we could see a dusting of snow inland. but generally those wintry showers will be peppering coastal areas again, which is where we are likely to see the risk of ice. temperatures again, another bitterly cold night to come. lows typically —3 to five, one or two spots could reach —10, like last night. a very cold start to friday. any places we'll see a lovely, bright, crisp, sunny day with any wintry showers affecting more northern and western areas. another cold day to come, that will take us into another very cold night for friday night, lows could be down to -10, -ii, for friday night, lows could be down to —10, —11, may be more than that in a few locations. into the weekend it stays cold but we start to lose the wind and we could start to have problems with freezing fog which could linger all day in some areas.

you can see the isobars opening out as this week low pressure sits across the uk on saturday and sunday, with lighter winds, still the threat of showers, and staying cold. but some areas particularly on saturday could see some good spells of sunshine. but there could be more cloud around across eastern areas. you can check out online all the warnings for ice and don't forget, head onto the weather app to see the weather where you are or where you are going. it is goodbye from us, and now we join the bbc news teams where you are. good afternoon. it's just after 1:30 and this is your latest sports news. it's the eve of the quarterfinals at the world cup in qatar

but the family had returned to find several items ofjewellery and watches missing, as now raheem sterling is prepared to come and rejoin england so they are expecting him back tomorrow but will he be in contention if he is on the bench? and of course he will be, but it seems very, very unlikely that after missing a whole week of training and the build—up to the last of the quarterfinals they face the french on saturday evening would he actually start. he missed the last group game against the welsh, he missed the last 16 tie and the way england were playing in that, you feel that other players have cemented forward roles and that marcus rashford would be first in the pecking order if there is any change to get the nod to go into the front three. good news is that raheem sterling comes back into the

ranks but very, very unlikely after missing a whole week that he would actually be in position to face the french. we've seen some managers depart after their sides have exited the tournament. luis enrique, the latest, from spain. pretty inevitable, they started like an absolute train against costa rica, we thought, is this a new generation of spain fans and aspirin that can actually do it? they were the world champions in 2010 but they were beaten by japan the world champions in 2010 but they were beaten byjapan at the world champions in 2010 but they were beaten by japan at the end of the group stages and then the big shockin the group stages and then the big shock in the last 16, beaten by morocco, so luis enrique goes and de la fuente has been announced as his replacement so spain moving quickly to replace him and he won a lot of those younger players in the spain

team, but luis enrique effectively sacked after his four year cycle, his contract was due to come to an end at the end of this year anyway. and just to finish — news of a death of a migrant worker at one of the world cup sites in qatar, what's been the reaction to that? of course, the plight of migrant workers in the reports of so many deaths in the lead up to this tournament has overshadowed it in many ways. the authority is disputing the claim that thousands have died. a filipino migrant worker in his 40s fell from a forklift and died from a head trauma during this world cup, working on the resort where saudi arabia had been staying at the ceo of the supreme committee was asked about that death today. we are in the middle of a world cup and we have a successful world cup and this is something that you want to talk about right now? death is a natural part of life, whether it is at

work or in your sleep. a worker died, our condolences go to his family. however, it's strange that this is something you want to focus on as your first question. he had quite a lot to say, he went on to say that he is very disappointed with journalists pursuing a false narrative about this whole issue of migrant worker deaths. . ~ this whole issue of migrant worker deaths. ., ~ , ., this whole issue of migrant worker deaths. . ~' , ., , this whole issue of migrant worker deaths. ., ~ , ., , . deaths. thank you very much, ollie and doha for— deaths. thank you very much, ollie and doha for us. _ deaths. thank you very much, ollie and doha for us. more _ deaths. thank you very much, ollie and doha for us. more ahead - deaths. thank you very much, ollie and doha for us. more ahead of - deaths. thank you very much, ollie and doha for us. more ahead of the world cup quarterfinals on the bbc sport website and you can also find out more on the news of the release of the us basketball star who was sent to prison by a court in russia in august for possession of cannabis oil. elon musk has defended the company's

1:41 pm
being the first african woman to manage nba scouting on the continent it is a huge responsibility. sport is the future of africa, it's the weapon of africa, especially for the girls. it's very important they see somebody like them doing this. sarah grew up in sudan, but fled to kenya with her family during the civil war. it was here she developed a passion for basketball. 0ur parents just continued to look for greener pastures, hence landing a scholarship to a school in kenya, which was the first place that we actually could enjoy the right of playing sports because back in sudan, due to the religious beliefs, sports and seeing a girl or a woman in shorts was a taboo. she played basketball at university in the us and competed professionally in europe and across africa. but it was during a coaching session in kenya that an nba executive

spotted her and she landed herjob with the raptors. she now also mentors players through her own foundation. good job! i have been spat on the face for the colour of my skin in different countries where i have experienced racism in more ways than i would like and that's why i love mentoring because without the foundation, what my family instilled in me, i wouldn't have been able to withstand all of that. one, two, three... the future of girls and basketball on the continent is very bright. in fact, it is my hope that ball gets to the point where there's an african women's league which is a platform like it is now for the men,

on it, places it in peckham, brings some real peckham vibes and caribbean and african vibes to it. who's that? listen, i've been training fora big martial arts competition, so if you want to bring it... 0ur scrooge is this property developer who's trying to gentrify peckham. he thinks he's doing the right thing by bringing new coffee shops, bring new art galleries, all that kind of stuff. he's met by three dappies, which is a caribbean and african term for ghosts. you are a ghost? you seem surprised. it's something that's happening all over london, so i feel like everyone can relate to this and it's happening to peckham. the christmas shows here are the best thing that happens
1:45 pm
at the theatre peckham this year because it says everything that we're about. it's about getting young people up on stage, getting them rubbing shoulders with professional artists. i take a lot from them, like how they prep, how they get, how they warm up, how they get ready to go on stage, how they switch characters. they've done a lot of stuff, - so they really know what they're doing and it's really fun. and also a lot of the time, they're really, really lovely people. - so, yeah. a lot of the time! we're building fewer affordable homes than we need and the problem's particularly acute in rural areas. that's been the warning this week from a cross—party committee of mps which found the government's multi—billion pound affordable housing programme isn't meeting its targets. but in north nottinghamshire, a farmer and former doctor says he may have part of the answer with cheap rented eco—homes for local people, as our environment correspondent sally bowman has been finding out.
1:46 pm
here's eakring, there's the road... an 18th—century map with a 21st—century vision. that's where we have put the eco—houses. chris parsons was born and went to school in eakring but, after a lifetime in medicine, he never expected to end up back here in retirement. it started when he inherited a farm and 1500 acres. it has ended in building possibly the most energy—efficient group of homes in the country — all marked for local tenants. we knew there was a shortage of available rented properties. what you've got are five two—beds and four one—bed houses. when they were finally finished, they were immediately filled, and 80% of the people that live in these houses have a connection within 400 yards of our office. the other thing is, they are very cheap to run.
1:47 pm
i moved in in september, come in and have a look. elaine roper is one of the tenants with eakring connections. before these were built, any children that people might have in eakring, they can't afford to stay in eakring. it's too expensive. it's the same all over. so places like this are ideal for them to live near you. the next step is creating and orchard and wildlife area to make these houses as green outside as they are in. all the space down there will become meadows, and the pond will add to the habitat, with scrubby areas and trees. i think this could be rolled out in every village in england. england are holding a press conference in doha ahead of
