weather with elizabeth rizzini. warmer weather is eventually on the way, but still bitterly cold today and plenty of snow for western scotland as we have been hearing about. this is east dumbartonshire as recorded by our weather watcher earlier today. a bit of snow also in the central bout but it is turning increasingly back to rain. this was the radar picture from earlier today. still some snow for the higher ground this afternoon. and a bit of a wintry mix in some of these showers towards north west england. the best of the sunshine today, east anglia and south—east england. through this evening and overnight, still a bit more hill snow for parts of northern scotland. coldest and clearest, east anglia, south—east england, temperatures here could get as low as —8 once again. there is a bit more cloud out towards the south—west and more of a

south—westerly breeze. not too many issues with freezing fog tomorrow morning. there will still be some showers towards the west. this band sinking southwards. a bit more hill snow for scotland. generally dry for northern ireland, and temperatures starting to creep up. it is starting to feel a little milder. this is the approaching weather front which will be with us on sunday and which will bring some wet and windy weather, along with the milder air. that will be seeping eastwards during the day on sunday. but there will be some tricky travelling conditions, there will be the risk of some freezing rain, very icy surfaces and some snow, especially on the leading—edge of our weather front as it moves eastwards and bumps into the colder air. it will turn back to rain i think after a very brief amount of time, but there will be some very icy conditions so if you are

travelling on sunday, take care. temperatures starting to come up. and this is monday morning, just consider that we saw —17 in aberdeenshire earlier on in the week. so, an awful lot milder. here is the outlook for the start of next week. is the mild air set to last? at the moment it doesn't look like it, but there are a lot of changes, hazardous conditions on sunday. that's all from the bbc news at one, so it's goodbye from me good afternoon. it's 1.30pm and here's your latest sports news. the turmoil around rugby union's worcester warriors and wasps continues — after the rfu, the sport's

lot of fans are disappointed, essentially at the rfu not being satisfied with the business plan they have provided and they are not convinced that the financial viability is there behind the bid and as a result they have rejected the bid for the club to play in the championship from next season. they say they stand by the set of conditions that they imposed and said they had to make sure that the future of the club was secure and risk of future insolvency was minimised. they've not had that satisfaction, so what next? jim o'toole and his consortium said yesterday they might ahead with a beard but not have elite rugby at sixways but the rfu are urging the administrators not to sell to a beard where they would not be elite rugby and they say they will explore the possibility of alternative bids. laura, thank you for that.

1:37 pm
at the world championships, in berlin in 2009. ii—time world champion bolt officially called time on his career following the 2017 world championships in london. i have accomplished all i wanted to do in my sport. it's just a great feeling to know that just through determination and sacrifice that i put in that i could accomplish what i wanted to do, and i'm trying to motivate people and say, believe in yourself and just go out and do your best. that's all the sport for now. let's get more on one of our main stories — the largest industrial action of its kind in nhs history. tens of thousands of nurses went on strike yesterday across england, wales and northern ireland in a dispute over pay. the bbc*s employment correspondent zoe conway spent time at great 0rmond street hospital speaking to some of the nurses there about why they decided to join the picket line.
1:38 pm
# we are striking, we are striking, for our patients and for us # it's for safety, not for money. picket lines don't get more gentle or more jolly than this. great 0rmond street hospital is one of the most famous hospitals in the world. rarely, in its 170 year history, have nurses walked out. beth has been a nurse for eight years. she works on a surgical team. she says she can't afford not to strike. i'm worried about putting on my heating at home because ijust feel like i don't know how much money i'm going to have to last. and thinking about a future is tricky. i spend my life looking after other people's children and i think, will i ever be able to afford to have any of my own? she isn't the first in her family to work in great 0rmond street. her grandmother vivian
1:39 pm
was also a nurse here. vivian first started nursing in 1950. she retired a0 years later. she is 90 years old. i'm thrilled, i'm absolutely thrilled. i'm very thrilled that you are at great 0rmond street. could you have ever imagined walking out when you were a nurse? no, no. it's hard to imagine. but i think that we had more staff. it's unheard of in my time, but you are all desperate. you are all at the end of your tether, you have worked all through covid and now the government arejust not paying you enough. well, i'm very proud to call you my grandmother. good, i'm proud to call you my granddaughter. what do we want? fair pay! what do we want? safe staffing! many more nurses than those seen here on the picket line voted to strike. they are now inside the hospital trying to make sure intensive
1:40 pm
and critical care is unaffected by the action. anne is a senior nurse in the heart and lung unit. she's been nursing for 35 years. despite having two degrees, being promoted to the position of matron, she says her pay has barely gone up. i've actually found a payslip i had from 2007, and i have gone up a pay grade, i have a vast amount more responsibility, and i earn £100 more now than i did in 2007. and only because i get an additional payment because i have another role within the trust. otherwise i would be earning less money now that i did in 2007. and that's cash in my hand. she is worried about the daily struggles more junior colleagues face trying to survive on their salaries. we have really seen in the last six months, maybe a bit longer,
1:41 pm
nurses who towards the end of the, coming up to payday in the last week, are not able to afford to get on the tube. they can't afford to travel to work, so they are walking. some of them huge distances. and then walking, doing a 12 and a half hour shift, and then walking home again. which to me is just appalling. dylan qualified as a nurse two years ago. he works on a surgical ward. great ormond street is one of the most famous hospitals in the world. when you walk through the front door, how do you feel? an incredible sense of pride. i'm very proud of where i work, the people i work with. it's a very emotionaljob. you build up relationships with these kids and with their families, you build up a rapport with staff, and to see the patients go through what the patients go through is incredibly tough sometimes. like so many of the staff we spoke to, dylan found it hard to walk out. there is a very sombre feeling on the wards, this morning as well.
1:42 pm
that it's come to this. no one is happy to be on strike, no one wants to be on strike. it sort of goes against why we have got into the job in the first place. we got into the job to help patients, nobody wants to walk out. but i know that they are being well looked after, i've got no regrets on coming on strike today. fair pay for nurses, fair pay for nurses! the hospital says it has done all it can to minimise the disruption here and apologises to patients and their families who have been affected by the strike. unless the government and the royal college of nursing find a way to resolve this dispute, nurses will walk out again here next tuesday. zoe conway, bbc news.

let's return to the news that four people were critically injured during a crush last night at a concert at the brixton o2 academy. a performance by nigerian star asake had to be abandoned as people tried to force their way in. the singer has said his heart is with those who were hurt. in the last few minutes police and council leaders held a press conference outside brixton police station. iam the i am the local borough commander in lambeth and i'd like to provide an update on the incident that took place a few yards from here last night at the o2 academy and i would like to extend my thoughts to all of those affected by last night's incident, and those who have been injured, and having seen some of the really upsetting images on social media, ourthoughts really upsetting images on social media, our thoughts are with them. police were called by staff at the 02 police were called by staff at the o2 academy on stockwell road last night at about half past nine following a report of a large number of people attempting to force entry to the venue. offices, the london ambulance service and fire brigade

1:50 pm
there has been a strong message sent with the result this evening and the people of stretford and urmston do not just speak for this constituency, but for millions of more people up and down the country, who know that this government has been letting us down for the past 12 yea rs. the swing to labour last night was smaller than in the recent chester by—election. the ballot was called after the sitting mp kate green stepped down to become the deputy mayor of greater manchester. but turnout ten days before christmas in bitterly cold weather was very low. only a quarter of eligible voters came out. bury*s conservative mp said this showed people weren't interested and labour's victory was a "nothing result". it tells us absolutely nothing. people have not been enthused on the street by this by—election. it is a total and utter waste of money. we elect politicians to represent people. not to go and apply for otherjobs.
1:51 pm
but labour say that's nonsense. this is notjust a loss for the conservatives, this is a crushing defeat for the conservatives. only four years ago they held a third of council seats. this by—election in a labour stronghold and during a cost—of—living crisis was always going to be harder than most for the conservatives. labour will be hoping for another by—election win early next year in west lancashire. when voters choose rosie cooper's successor. abbiejones, north west today. higher living costs are contributing to poor school attendance since the pandemic, according to staff supporting families. schools are offering to wash and dry uniforms and provide shower facilities for some pupils, as they try to remove barriers keeping them from class. our education and family correspondent bethan lewis reports.
1:52 pm
emily is making daily calls to pupils struggling with coming to school. i will get a message letting me know if she is having a wobbly day, so the parents let me know to check in. broken routines have contributed to attendance levels still well below where they were before the pandemic. some children have found it really hard to re—engage with learning, due to them being in their houses for such a long period. the whole thing of getting back into a large, busy environment. now schools are at the sharp end of another crisis, and cost of living pressures can mean extra barriers stopping some children coming to school. schools and council staff work together to offer help, with the school's second—hand uniform shop, they are getting items togetherfor a pupil. what size blazer do we need? energy costs for showers and struggling to repair washing machines to clean uniforms can
1:53 pm
affect attendance. that is a barrier to coming into school. i can't send them in because the washing machine is broken. we have washing and drying facilities here so we can wash it and dry it and you are good to go then. we also have shower facilities so if a learner needed to have a shower in school, that wouldn't be a problem. in pembrokeshire, they are running a campaign to emphasise the benefits of school beyond just the academic. it's a message they are trying to get across at this school in tenby. the more a child is at school, the more they will be learning and the greater outcomes they will achieve, but also for young people it's about the experience of school. school absenteeism isn't a new issue, but the challenge for schools is greater than ever. animal charities say they're extremely worried about meeting their energy bills, when the price cap for charities ends next year. two local charities have told us
1:54 pm
they've already seen huge increases in their costs, and have very few ways to cut back. asjules hyam reports they're also dealing with increasing numbers of abandoned animals. joseph is getting much needed attention. he was found with another rabbit abandoned in a cage on a park bench. he is one of the growing number of animals at the staff are taking on. we think it is more of a cost of living issue with the owners rather than the animals themselves. obviously, a lot of people may need help in other areas of their lives a lot of the animals coming into us have more severe behavioural issues, probably from covid and the kind of lockdown scenarios they didn't have socialisation, and then we are seeing medical situations coming in as well. the animals here need to be kept warm and well fed. they need personal and medical attention, demand and costs are rising, while the ventre relies on donations from people who now have less to get. the cost of living has hit us the same as everyone else. a recent rspca survey
1:55 pm
suggested that 70% of pet owners were worried about caring for their pets. we are no different, our energy bills have increased by £17,000. the demand for our service has increased so much. and it's the same at this bath cats and dogs home. these puppies need special attention, turning up the heating is not an option. it is tough. it has been quite a shock to see our prospective energy bills for next year. when their cap ends in the springtime, we think our estimate at the moment is to go from around 40,000 this year to close to 200,000 next year, which as you can imagine, is a sizeable sum of money to find. meeting those costs is a challenge that rachel says they will meet and they are looking at waystwo ways to become more energy—efficient. unless the government changed its plans with the price cap, charities
1:56 pm
are saying they face a very difficult year ahead. now it's time for a look at the weather with elizabeth rizzinni still bitterly cold across the uk again today with snowfall, especially for parts of western even reaching the central belt towards argyll and bute as recorded by one of our weather watchers. by contrast, across much of east anglia in south—east england, blue sky and sunshine and a very cold start of the day with temperatures as low as -10 the day with temperatures as low as —10 degrees. this weekend we will all see the transition to milder air by the time you get to sunday but it will be icy with more snowfall in the forecast and this is the radar

showing snow tracking in from the rest turning to rain and turning to lower levels tonight and do expect more hill snow for parts of scotland and another few centimetres for the pennines. the wintry showers are moving east. it's going to be driest and clearest night between east anglia and the south—east of england as temperatures could drop as low as -8. not as temperatures could drop as low as —8. not much in the way of freezing fog because the south—westerly wind is set to pick up, so slightly milder tomorrow but breezy, showers towards western areas of wales and the chance of one or two showers for northern ireland with hill snow for scotland and eastern scotland is dry with sunny spells and we should see more sunny spells across much of southern england as well with temperatures rising to meet single figures. that mild air is not too far away and by the time we head into sunday the weather front will be moving east, introducing the milder conditions and still some blues out to the east and it will still be very cold and quite icy because the longer the mild air comes in there as freezing rain.

tricky travelling conditions through sunday as it will be icy and the chance of further hill snow basically on the leading edge of the front, so most of the snow will be out towards the north and west and across higher ground. the vast majority will fall as rain, but as it falls on subzero grounds there could be a lot of very icy, slippery conditions out there. these will be the temperatures by the time we get to the end of the day on sunday on the mild air will give us double figures out towards the far south—west of england. by monday morning, double figures pretty much across the board. i'll start to the new working week particularly given the cold conditions we have been seeing of late in the mild air should last but plenty of uncertainty in the forecast, so do keep up to date.
