and wales continues. there were fewer calls than usual in some areas, but nhs providers — which represents hospital trusts and ambulance services — says patients who put—off going to accident and emergency departments yesterday, could turn—up today, increasing pressure on services. daniela relph reports. what do we want? fair pay. when do we want it? now! after the strike, comes the challenge of today. people appeared to have heeded the warnings and avoided calling 999 in many regions, with thousands of ambulance workers striking yesterday. but now hospitals are bracing themselves for a return to normal service, what some are viewing as a possible rebound effect in the days ahead. we know that the pressure is going to mount over the next couple of days because there's very likely to be some knock—on impact, including those people who didn't come forward for treatment over the past couple of days, and also rescheduling operations and outpatient appointments that couldn't take place during the strike days.

it was the biggest strike action by ambulance staff in more than 30 years. yesterday's picket lines, a clear sign of how the dispute between government and ambulance workers over pay, job conditions and patient safety has escalated. those striking felt left with no other option other than to stop work. there's patients in the community that are waiting hours on end in very poorly or critical conditions that aren't getting ambulances. in life threatening cases, ambulance workers did leave the picket line to respond. the military were also called in to help. the impact of the strike appears mixed across england and wales. some services were put on a critical footing. others reported a reduction in 999 calls, while unions were accused by the health secretary of putting

the lives of patients at risk. the nhs is broken. the ambulance service is crippled by a lack of funding and a real recruitment and retention crisis. this industrial action can stop today. what needs to happen is the government need to sit down with the senior unison officials and the other nhs unions. we can stop this today. there doesn't need to be any more industrial action. scottish health unions are due to meet today to discuss their next move after nurses, paramedics and midwives rejected what the scottish government called a best and final pay offer. strike action is now a real possibility. in england and wales, the effects of the latest disruption may last several days, with one union planning another strike next week. daniela relph, bbc news. let's speak now to our political correspondent, damian grammaticas.

good correspondent, damian grammaticas. morning. th who good morning. the row over the last who knows how long between the government and the unions in terms of sitting around a table and discussing pay, one says no and one says you need to. no sign of that changing, i had to say, in the coming days. what we have seen in the last 2a hours if anything is a deepening, and trenching of those divisions. yesterday we had health secretary stephen barclay, comments from him, where he accused unions are taking a conscious decision to inflict harm on patients. that angered the unions who said it was a blatant lie and their members had been on strikes, leaving picket lines to return the most life—threatening call—outs. what we will see now, as you are hearing at the end of that report, next week more strikes wednesday, the gmb union having more strikes.

the unions saying that unless the government agrees to meaningful pay talks, industrial action will continue and can escalate into the new year. so we are going to see unison, the largest ambulance union in england, that is likely to re—ballot. we could see similar from other unions. the government meanwhile suggesting, we are seeing in today's papers, looking ahead, asking unions and workers to look ahead to next year's pay review. stephen barclay hopes that might be a route to a settlement. no sign the union is one that they want to talk about this year's pay, which they say is still the issue. around a thousand border force staff will begin an eight—day strike from tomorrow — six airports will be affected

and the government has warned passengers could face "serious disruption." it's as more industrial action across various sectors is set to take place — with royal mail workers going back to the picket line tomorrow and on christmas eve. meanwhile, rail workers from the rmt union will also strike from 3 o'clock saturday, until the early hours of tuesday 27th december. the ukrainian president, volodymyr zelensky, has told a packed joint session of the us congress that the war in ukraine is a fight for the freedom of the world. in a rousing speech, he said his country was "alive and kicking" and any military aid it received was not charity but an investment in global security. it comes as president biden confirmed the us would provide nearly $2 billion in additional military aid to ukraine. our correspondent, nada tawfik, reports. ukraine's president volodymyr zelensky was embraced by us lawmakers with a long standing ovation, as he entered the house chamber. wearing his trademark military fatigues, he came here on this, his first trip abroad since the start of russia's invasion

hydrogen assessment. all our methane gas boilers are due to be phased out from 2035 and this pilot project is the government exploring options for what happens next. ok, so in our hydrogen experience centre... as no one has done hydrogen like this before, the technology at the whitby experience centre feels a bit, well, new. we are shown a hydrogen boiler that you could buy now. a fire that you couldn't. and a hydrogen cooker. that pops when it lights. as of today, these aren't on the market. hydrogen's biggest advantage is that it does not release the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, when it burns, but you do need energy to make it, and currently less than 1% is made using renewable energy. with the rest coming from, you guessed it, fossilfuels. the people who live here

are being told that by swapping to hydrogen they will be doing their bit to cut carbon emissions and fight climate change. but critics, and there are plenty of them, say using hydrogen for heating is a bad idea and that this is a desperate last ploy by gas companies and the fossil fuel industry to try to hold onto their business. it's been suggested that hydrogen could be an easy replacement, because you just have to change the gas in the pipes, but it's more complicated than that. if you use electricity to make what is called green hydrogen, so hydrogen from renewable electricity and you compare that with using the same electricity and you run a heat pump to deliver the same amount of heat, you need about five or six times more electricity. hydrogen is both more leaky and combustible than natural gas. hi, mate.

but the gas companies supporting the trial say with some adjustments it can be made safe. they are doing home visits in whitby, explaining that if the proposal goes ahead, residents will have to choose between a free hydrogen boiler and appliances or an electric heat pump. i'm definitely up for it. phil is convinced, but whitby is divided. marie and margaret say they have been deeply affected by a proposal they see as a dangerous experiment. i wake up in the night thinking about it, and it's worrying. it's very worrying. it's horrendous. the stress, that's all that is - getting talked about in my house. kate set up a facebook group to keep residents informed. she says she has been struggling to get answers from cadent, one of the gas companies backing the trial. i'm trying to be the person that the residents can come to and help them.

this is what cadent are not doing. they're not listening to us. to them they don't care how they get us over the line, as long as we are over. we are just collateral to them. as long as it goes ahead. the whitby hydrogen village proposal would be submitted to the government in march he will then decide whether it starts in 2025. the demands of some residents for a vote on the project have so far been ignored. a vote won't be the real world. we will all need to make this choice on a certain day to move to a different type of competing technology. this project is bringing the decision to life right now for whitby but it's coming for all of us in the near future. if we are to hit our climate targets, all of our old gas boilers will soon have to be turned off. how we heat our homes

increasing pressure on services. daniela relph reports. what do we want? fair pay. when do we want it? now! after the strike, comes the challenge of today. people appeared to have heeded the warnings and avoided calling 999 in many regions, with thousands of ambulance workers striking yesterday. but now hospitals are bracing themselves for a return to normal service, what some are viewing as a possible rebound effect in the days ahead. we know that the pressure is going to mount over the next couple of days because there's very likely to be some knock—on impact, including those people who didn't come forward for treatment over the past couple of days, and also rescheduling operations and outpatient appointments that couldn't take place during the strike days. it was the biggest strike action by ambulance staff in more than 30 years. yesterday's picket lines,

a clear sign of how the dispute between government and ambulance workers over pay, job conditions and patient safety has escalated. those striking felt left with no other option other than to stop work. there's patients in the community that are waiting hours on end in very poorly or critical conditions that aren't getting ambulances. in life threatening cases, ambulance workers did leave the picket line to respond. the military were also called in to help. the impact of the strike appears mixed across england and wales. some services were put on a critical footing. others reported a reduction in 999 calls, while unions were accused by the health secretary of putting the lives of patients at risk. the nhs is broken. the ambulance service is crippled by a lack of funding and a real recruitment and retention crisis. this industrial action

first 13 weeks, from 14 weeks onwards you are in safe territory for giving chemotherapy. this is an amazing make of whatever humans have created. there is a unique ability to filter things from the mother to keep them from the baby. it is unbelievably complicated science which we have never seen that we can see a healthy baby, which has a unique example of the safety of giving chemotherapy in that situation. there are no other options. the other challenges, not just a baby, we had to look at mother. for bethany to go through six cycles of chemotherapy middle the usual side effects, in addition to being pregnant with uterine sepsis, which is when blood counts go down and you get infections, on

top of which coronavirus is a new risk. i made the decision about chemotherapy because i thought it was safe for both the mother and baby. our obstetric colleagues at worcester were amazing. i never could have done that without catherine hillman“s team. they came to help each time. they were monitoring the baby. the other worries, we have to finish the chemo by 35 weeks. he had a very big timeline which by god's race we never had any delay. if there were delays, we would have been in more trouble. we even thought we could get gmail after delivery but we managed to finish or six cycles before that timeline. i have told the obstetrician saying we can plan the obstetrician saying we can plan the delivery date, an elective cesarean. it was all going so well.

good morning. in the run—up to christmas, generally speaking it will be mild but heavy rain at times. on christmas day cold out in the north of scotland sweeps down over us all. all the details later in the programme. it's thursday the 22nd of december. health leaders are warning that today could be "very challenging" for hospitals, as disruption from yesterday's ambulance strike in england and wales continues. nhs providers — which represents hospital trusts and ambulance services — says patients who put—off going to a&e yesterday, could turn—up today, increasing pressure on resources. daniela relph reports. what do we want? fair pay. when do we want it? now! after the strike, comes the challenge of today. people appeared to have heeded the warnings and avoided calling 999 in many regions, with thousands of ambulance workers striking yesterday.

but now hospitals are bracing themselves for a return to normal service, what some are viewing as a possible rebound effect in the days ahead. we know that the pressure is going to mount over the next couple of days because there's very likely to be some knock—on impact, including those people who didn't come forward for treatment over the past couple of days, and also rescheduling operations and outpatient appointments that couldn't take place during the strike days. it was the biggest strike action by ambulance staff in more than 30 years. yesterday's picket lines, a clear sign of how the dispute between government and ambulance workers over pay, job conditions and patient safety has escalated. those striking felt left with no other option other than to stop work. there's patients in the community that are waiting hours on end in very poorly or critical conditions that aren't getting ambulances.

in life threatening cases, ambulance workers did leave the picket line to respond. the military were also called in to help. the impact of the strike appears mixed across england and wales. some services were put on a critical footing. others reported a reduction in 999 calls, while unions were accused by the health secretary of putting the lives of patients at risk. the nhs is broken. the ambulance service is crippled by a lack of funding and a real recruitment and retention crisis. this industrial action can stop today. what needs to happen is the government need to sit down with the senior unison officials and the other nhs unions. we can stop this today. there doesn't need to be any more industrial action. scottish health unions are due to meet today to discuss their next move after nurses, paramedics and midwives rejected what the scottish government called a best and final pay offer.

there has been a lot of debate about the debate itself and the upcoming vote. where are we in the process? it looks as if there will be a vote later on today. it has been an extraordinary couple of days in a scottish parliament. two marathon days of debate, to the extent the automatic lighting system came on at one point and stop mps debating. incidents like one nsp fainting as the debate was happening and protest from the public gallery, people protesting against the bill, shouting shame at msps. why is it taking so long? one of the main reasons is the scottish conservatives, most of them, are vehemently opposed to this legislation. they had tried to slow down the process of the bill, they want to push it into 2023. really, they feel it is a flawed legislation. a huge amount of the

nation around this. on the one hand, people in favour of the bill thinking it is necessary to make life easier for transgender people life easier for tra nsgender people to life easier for transgender people to reduce the trauma that they go through in trying to get a gender recognition certificate. on the other hand, people who oppose the bill object to the fact it will mean that 16 and i7—year—olds will be able to apply for a certificate. there is also concern that male six offenders could use a certificate to gain access to single six spaces like toilets, changing rooms or women's prisons. the scottish government has tried to address some of those concerns by accepting amendments to the legislation, not enough for the opponents. despite all that debate, all that emotion, it looks as though there will be a final vote probably at liz30pm today. thank you very much.

by your size, i was written off by how slow i was. i do not think i can get too much slower. you are remarkable, rob, a massive inspiration. let's talk for a moment about friendship. that is what this is all about, isn't it? it's about friendship — old friends and new friends. what was it like seeing kevin getting his award? i have been so proud to have been affiliated with kevin that he has been given a special award. some people come along in life who affect you and are there to help you when times are tough. he was always there for me. i doubt i would be smiling without the sacrifice he has done for his little mate. kev for prime minister! gets all our votes.
