then our partners at the fire department and not only the monterey park fire department but many others who came to assist the victims, survivors, who needed assistance. there were at least ten additional victims transported to numerous local hospitals. but i do want to start off with saying that unfortunately, when the fire department did get into the business, they did pronounce ten of the victims are deceased. at the scene. at the scene that ijust described. the ten additional victims that were transported to numerous local hospitals, they are listed in various conditions from stable to critical condition. there is a male suspect that fled the scene and remains outstanding as of this moment. our very preliminary

investigation, the california governors office of emergency services and numerous other law enforcement agencies. bottom line is here we are going to use every resource available to us because we need to get this person off the streets as soon as possible, but again, we are still in the very early stages of this investigation and there is probably a lot more that we don't know than what we do know at this time. as i said earlier, the men and women of the sheriff's departmentjoin me in extending our condolences to the countless families affected by this senseless shooting. and they will remain constantly on the minds of our investigators who i see it in their eyes, they want to get this guy and they are going to. i also want you to know questions that are being asked, is this related to the other event here in the city of monterey park or any concerns about
4:38 pm
any other chinese new year events? we are working here, you see all the partners behind me, including the fbi, we have been doing threat assessments throughout the morning, are they connected? honestly, we do not know the answer to that yet. it may or may not be. as we look at other events, we will make sure that we stepped up our presence from the los angeles county sheriffs department, we will be in communication with other law enforcement agencies, we already have been, to make sure that security is a top priority at any event, and that is not to indicate that we think there is a threat there we are just taking every precaution that we can, we don't want anybody else to be hurt. as a matter of fact, i will be attending another chinese new year event later on in a couple of hours and i encourage people to go out and enjoy the events, it is a time, from that

4:44 pm
know that people could come out after the pandemic to celebrate, to see family, to see children, to see our elderly, to know that this was a place of welcoming. people would come here for many years knowing that this was a place of acceptance of diversity of immigrants. it's unfortunate what occurred, we are praying for those who have lost their lives and their families, and for those who are currently in our care, and that are injured. i know that at least four of those individuals are at our lec usc medical trauma hospital and i want to thank the medical staff that has been there all night providing the services and helping those to heal. we have many more prize to provide for our community. as you know, hate crime is nothing new, fulsome in our community, especially the aa pi community, especially the aa pi community, and that is why almost years ago the county board of supervisors took action right on the

police, and i appreciate the fbi coming immediately, president biden has been advised of this horrific shooting, and i hope that we can make a determination as to whether this was a hate crime. this could have been so much worse. only hours earlier, all of us were together, only one block away. at the lunar new year festival. all of us, standing right here, were there. there were thousands there. it is horrible that such a thing could occur at a time of celebration for so many in the aapi community and in the asian community, worldwide. this is a time to be with family, to celebrate, and yet, this tour a hole through all of our hearts. but let me say, i have lived in the city for 37 years, i was on the city council

defined by the law but they say that everything is on the table, they are looking at every possibility, and he simply asked the question, who walks into a crowded venue and guns down 20 people? just that update, there, that at the moment, the suspect is still on the loose. multiple rounds were fired, different weapons from the witness statements had been described, and so, they don't know what type of weapon it was and whether. .. what type of weapon it was and whether... they are not sure whether it was an assault rifle but the most important point is that they are looking for somebody that they describe as a male asian between the ages of 30—50. they are hoping to bring a better description in the next few hours, as such. but ten people lost their lives in the shooting in monterey park in california. ten people are injured and the gun person is still on the

run according to that press conference that we have just witnessed live from california. more details will be brought to you here on bbc news. now let's bring you up—to—date with the weather. we will continue to see some big differences with the weather with the start of the week, like we have seen today. in much of scotland and here in northern ireland it has been grey and damp but temperatures have reached ten or 11 degrees. in the sunshine, after a really frosty start, around cambridge, temperatures struggle to get much above freezing. we still got that wedge of cold air across south—eastern areas that will persist for the first half of the new week, this milder air still across north—western parts of the country, struggles to break through that cold air for the south. in that cold air, we are going to find some more frost and fog overnight but across north—western parts of the uk, we are underneath that blanket of cloud, dampness, like rain and drizzle, but across eastern parts, that fog will be thickening up,
4:57 pm
dense and freezing. we are going to find some rust forming in these areas as well. for much of wales, the far north and west of england, it could be frost free and certainly it's going to be milder across scotland and northern ireland when we had the wind is coming in from the atlantic. a lot of cloud for many places to start the day on monday, that fog across eastern parts of england will slowly lift but to be replaced by cloud in east anglia and the south—east. we may see a bit more sunshine across other parts of england and wales away from some of these western coastal areas. there are still going to be a lot of cloud for scotland and northern ireland, maybe a little thinner than today, temperatures ten or 11 degrees. they could be some sunshine in the very first but again struggling to make four or 5 degrees across the midlands and easson ingo. that cold air underneath that area of high pressure, the mild air coming in, feeding on this cloudy skies as well. to the south, across wales, the midlands, southern england, there may still be a touch of frost early on tuesday, complicated by some fog and cloud,
4:58 pm
there will be sent and at times, still cold air here, further north, more cloud, temperatures again reaching 10—11 . wednesday, we start to see some changes. mainly because we're going to find this weather front pushing its way into that area of high pressure and bringing some rain. not a great deal of rain, most of it over the hills of western scotland. it will be hot followed by sunshine and the odd shower for scotland and northern ireland. the are getting a little chilly here, further south across the uk, still cloudy, maybe still a bit misty and quite cold across east anglia and the south—east in particular.
