10:39 pm
which film—makers and performers are nominated for the stariest of them all. the oscars, of course. i'mjane hill, and with me for this bbc news special is the film critic and producerjason solomons. we'll be live in los angeles in the coming minutes as well, of course, for that all important announcement. but first, let's just remind ourselves of some of the top contenders. will the brutal all quiet on the western front do well? it's a german language telling of the horrors of the first world war. you do like me? i don't. a tale of friendship gone sour. martin mcdonagh's the banshees of inisherin has been a critical hit, and there could be nods for two of the year's biggest sequels, top gun: maverick and. black panther: wakanda forever.
10:40 pm
hello. and a very warm welcome to bbc news on oscar nominations day. live in los angeles in the coming minutes, but jason solomons is with me. lovely to have you back with us. let's just have some initial thoughts from you, jason, as someone who follows all of this world so very closely, of course. what could we be watching hear in in the coming minutes? yeah, it's always a fascinating day. the runners and riders sort of coming into... it's not what's going to win, but who's going to win nominations and who's going to get the most nominations. it becomes a bit of a numbers game. you know, people are talking about the banshees of inisherin getting ten nominations. everything everywhere all at once is a film to look out for, with michelle yeoh. people are saying because of its technical brilliance and wizardry. also nine, ten nominations coming its way. steven spielberg's the fabled man's hot favourite in hollywood, steven spielberg's the fablemans hot favourite in hollywood, less so here in britain at the baftas last week
10:41 pm
it was rather snubbed. can it recover its poise today, and get another 9—10 nominations for one of the academy's all time favourites, steven spielberg? so, all of that's coming into focus. plus, will it be a fantastic day for ireland, the banshees of inisherin, with all those amazing actors colin farrell, brendan gleeson and, in the sort of lower categories, barry keoghan, kerry condon, the writing of martin mcdonagh. i expect ireland to be figuring and jumping very... toasting itself very heartily this evening. look out for paul mescal as one of the acting possibilities. i think a lot of people would be forgiven for thinking, "well, we know what's happening this year." "it's all about all quiet on the western front." "it's what everyone*s talking about." i'm really interested in your take on that, a german language film, of course. yeah. extraordinary. it's a film that... this would be one of the first times, a film that's already won a best picture oscar in 1930 for lewis milestone*s adaptation of it, which was english language, as an adaptation of a book that every german schoolchild reads at school, like we do first world war poetry here. everyone knows about it, but it's been rarely adapted for an international audience, particularly not told in the german language. and now it has been. fantastic performances,
10:42 pm
fantastic craft categories, built the trenches. if you think you've seen world war one movies before, and we have seen a lot of them, this does give a different perspective to it from the other side, and actually makes you think again about the futility of war. we know that war is futile, and we know that first world war in particular was bloody and brutal and horrible. but this shows that it was on all sides, and that's really unusual, and that's really gives another colour. and, i think that's why people are flocking towards this film. we love cinema. that's why we're all here. it's why you do what you do. and there's two big films this year that are specifically about the love of cinema. yeah. the steven spielberg that's been mentioned, but also sam mendes' empire of light, a real love letter to cinema that hasn't perhaps garnered quite as many nominations as we might have been thinking thus far. ..dropped through as many letter boxes as perhaps it should have. the love letter to cinema. it's become a genre this year. steven spielberg's film about a little boy who falls in love with making super eight films at home and becomes, of course, steven spielberg. it's a sort of fable, uh fablemans, you know.
10:43 pm
and then, of course, you've got empire of light. we've seen michelle williams there. she's probably going to get an acting nominee nomination. there's paul dano as well in the supporting categories as spielberg's parents. and you've got all of these queues outside the cinema, the joy of going to the cinema. it's trying to be recaptured. i hope people are recapturing. look at those shots of the little boy looking up in the beam of light. we see it in that film by spielberg. we see it in the sam mendes film, empire of light, which i enjoyed very much. i did too, yes. it seems to be not figuring, apart from its amazing cinematographer, roger deakins. the wonderful roger deakins. i mean, see it on a big screen, people. beautiful. we've sat here thinking, "oh, well done, roger deakins, another nomination." it took him 1a to secure a win, but now he's in there all the time. these are films convincing you that cinema is a special experience. it's an event, you know, it's not like sitting at home. we talked about the streamers. people sit at home in their sofas, ingesting all this stuff. well, going to the cinema is called the movies. we move towards it. we want to go and have this event. and i think things like the oscars are recovering their poise.
10:44 pm
sophie mentioned that it's on the rise again. people are interested in cinema still. people say there's a nail in the coffin because of the streamers. i don't think so. i think people want to gather in the dark and celebrate cinema, as they're doing live in los angeles now. and in fact, absolutely. and as we hope they are about to any moment now, the screen just went dark, which i have to say we took to be a good sign. but i may be, i may be... i love it when the lights go down, that's my favourite moment. i always think i'm about to see the best thing ever, and i hope we are again today. but it's about that shared experience, isn't it? that's your difference. that's your difference between going to a cinema to actually make that move, as they say, and go and enjoy it with other people. to hear the chatter afterwards, to get the tone. did everyone love it? i think you want to make an occasion of it, you know. you're going to see it. it's not coming to see you at home. we are building up to the announcement. let's listen in. good morning, everyone. good morning, everybody. we've been awake all night getting ready for this moment. and we're so excited, so honoured, so overcaffeinated,
10:45 pm
to reveal the nominations for the 95th oscars. good morning, everybody. riz, i am so happy to be here with you. you have been nominated twice, and you won an oscar last year. so ijust wanted to know, did you watch this both of those times? i did watch it, yeah. but i didn't wake up to watch it. and the reason for that is i never really fell asleep in the first place. there was just a lot of anticipation. and i know there's a lot of people who can't wait for us to get started. so without further ado, here are the nominees for performance by an actress in a supporting role. angela bassett in black panther: wakanda forever. hong chao in the whale. hong chau in the whale. kerry condon in the banshees of inisherin. jamie lee curtis in everything,
10:46 pm
everywhere, all at once. and stephanie hsu in everything everywhere all at once. and now we have the first of the two award categories on the writers. the first is adapted screenplay. the nominees are. all quiet on the western front. screenplay by edward berger, leslie patterson and ian stokoe. glass, onion: a knives out mystery written by rianjohnson. living, written by kazuo ishiguro. and top gun: maverick screenplay by erin kruger and eric warren singer and christopher mcquarrie. story by peter craig and justin marks and women talking. screenplay by sarah polley.
10:47 pm
and here are the nominees for original screenplay. the banshees of inisherin, written by martin mcdonagh. everything, everywhere, all at once. written by daniel kwan and daniel scheinert. the fablemans, written by steven spielberg and tony kushner. tar, written by todd field. and triangle of sadness, written by reuben osmond. here are the nominees for performance by an actor in a supporting role. brendan gleeson in the banshees of inisherin . brian tyree henry, in causeway. judd hirsch in the fablemans. barry keoghan in the banshees of inisherin. and ke huy quan, in everything,
10:48 pm
everywhere, all at once. here are the nominees for performance by an actor in a leading role. austin butler, in elvis. colin farrell in the banshees of inisherin. brendan fraser in the whale. paul mescal in aftersun. and bill nye in living. and bill nighy in living. and, now, the five nominees for performance by an actress in a leading role. cate blanchett in tar. ana de armas in blonde. andrea riseborough in to leslie.
10:49 pm
michelle williams in the fablemans, and michelle yeoh in everything, everywhere, all at once. just two categories remain. the first is achievement in directing, and the nominees are, martin mcdonagh the banshees of inisherin. daniel kwan and daniel scheinert. everything, everywhere, all at once. steven spielberg, the fablemans. todd field, tar. and reuben ostlund triangle of sadness. now, the final category. here are the ten nominees for best motion picture of the year.
10:50 pm
all quiet on the western front malte grunert, producer. avatar: the way of water. james cameron and jon landau producers. the banshees of inisherin. brad brent, pete chernin and martin mcdonagh producers. elvis, baz luhrmann, catherine martin, gayle berman, patrick mccormick and skyler weiss, producers _ everything, everywhere, all at once. daniel kwan, daniel scheinert, and jonathan wang, producers. the fablemans, christy krieger, steven spielberg and tony kushner produces. tar, todd field, alexandra milchan and scott lambert producers. top gun: maverick, tom cruise, christopher mcquarrie, david ellison and jerry bruckheimer producers.
10:51 pm
triangle of sadness, erik hesmondhalgh and philip bobo producers. and women talking, dee dee gardner, jeremy kleiner and frances mcdormand. producers. thank you forjoining us. and be sure to watch the 95th oscars live with hostjimmy kimmel. sunday, march 12th. and there we have it. i've lost count of the number of times you and i have gone. wow. because there's been a good few surprises in there. an interesting list for those really watching the brits. i know we're going out around the world. quite exciting day for bill nighy, one of britain's finest actors, who i think i'm right in saying has never had an oscar nomination before. so he's nominated in the best actor category for living. but there's lots of surprises and some interesting choices we made in terms of numbers. in fact, quick thought, jason, because you best you have been adding up as we go,
10:52 pm
which is not don't make me do maths but i think that everything everywhere all at once has got 11 which i make as 9. it might be ten, actually. so i think what we're seeing is that this race becomes a race is going to be between branches of engineering and everything all at once, because editing is a key category. they are only both nominated in and directing. they're both nominated in that. and normally you can't win best picture without those categories. so they are the only ones that kind of intersect in all of those. and that would be an extraordinary thing. one is a very quiet, irish, sad, mournful film from martin mcdonagh, who's been around the block before with in bruges and of course, with three billboards outside ebbing, missouri, which he won best actress for, for his star there.
10:53 pm
but everything everywhere, al at ance is fresh. it's new, it's new. independent hollywood. the daniels are a strange directing pair that work together. as i said, it's a movie that i think has gone over our heads a little bit. maybe we're not young enough. i don't know what it is. it's a big indie hit for the new distributor. 8241t*s been their biggest hit so far. a21; it's been their biggest hit so far. it's really put them on the map as a powerhouse distributor and you can hear the love for that film in the room, everyone cheering for it. it's great for the asian community. we mentioned parasite breaking through for korea. this this will represent a vast audiences of chinese audiences all around asia. asia is terrific. michelle yeoh is terrific. she's nominated. she's brilliant in it. absolutely. but they're all nominated. nominated for it.
10:54 pm
even ke hey quan, who started out as a child actor for steven spielberg in the second indiana jones movie and in goonies and hasn't really worked since. and suddenly he's back here, back at the top in hollywood. it's full of redemption stories this year's oscars, and it's full of redemption stories for cinema itself. we mentioned the big blockbusters. well, avatar*s in there as best picture. top gun is in there with six nominations, including for screenplay. you don't normally get those for blockbusters. someone noticed that someone had written this stuff and adapted it. wouldn't you used to get noticed? you're right. and it's been nominated in cinematography. you know, ithought top gun was extraordinary. i loved it. it took me back to watching movies as a kid. the experience of loving, going to the movies and seeing a big screen entertainment. so it wouldn't surprise me if that could come in and and kind of surprise us at the last minute swoop in. how about that? we've talked a lot about top gun, everything everywhere. let's also talk about another of the films that is on the best picture list, all quiet on the western front. a very difficult watch, but stunningly well made difficult, of course, because it is about the horrors of the first world war. and i am delighted to say that one
10:55 pm
of the nominees from that film joins us on the phone now from dusseldorf. gentlemen, very many congratulations because you are nominated for best score for a truly remarkable film. congratulations. thank you very much. thank you. and talk us through the happy. i hope you are and i'm sure you are. and you and you absolutely deserve to be. talk us through the process of how you worked with the director, what you're your process was for for for working your magic was for working your magic through what is of, by definition, a very upsetting film. well, i mean, in general, you know, you never know how a film turns out in the end. i mean, when you say yes to a script, you never know how the whole collaboration will will end up. and if there is a lot of freedom or if you have to fulfil a lot of things that are requested. it's always a you know, a challenge. and i love actually, that's what i love about working on a film because i'm also doing my own records. but when i'm working on a film, i really love that kind of challenge. and with edward, it was very easy. i mean, he was we were watching the movie together and i said
10:56 pm
to him, man, this film is bloody loud. you know, there's a lot there is a lot of fight scenes and a lot of there were a lot of explosions and battle scenes, of course, extremely loud. and i needed to find for myself a feeling that the music makes somehow sense in, you know, when it is played and that it's not like whatever underneath all the loud, the loud sound. so we were talking about it very, very briefly and he said he wants to have destruction. he wants to have a sound or a melody for or music for the stomach feeling of paul baumer, who is the protagonist. and he wanted to have something from me that i've never done before. so these were the three things that i went home with, which was a little bit like i was sitting in the train and i'm like, "oh man, something that i've never done before with that is quite a big challenge." and but on my way with a train from berlin to dusseldorf, i had an idea that i wanted to use
10:57 pm
it in harmonium. and i think that was the i would say the the first thought. and that worked very well. well, you call it a challenge, but congratulations, because you rose to that challenge in an extraordinary way. and today you have an oscar nomination. so enjoy the ceremony in march. and so many thanks forjoining us so quickly here on bbc news. we really appreciate it. congratulations again. thank you. the nomination for best sound for all. quiet on the western front. best score. it's in the category for yes, one of nine for best picture as well for a foreign language movie. i have to say, a parasite only had, i think five and it ended up winning best picture. but nine nominations is an extraordinary achievement in all of those categories. and also, what a classy show we get to talk about the harmonium and how an important an instrument that has been to the oscar process is, you know, it's a movie that i don't discount, you know, at this point,
10:58 pm
the running, you know, i mentioned banshees, and everything overall, it's all quiet. on the western front is a movie that might gain momentum or people watch it. the more they're stunned by the craft, the acting, the the production design that's all nominated there, it's a big, big achievement. and we can find out what happens in march. thanks very much for being with us here. hello. tuesday brought some huge contrasts in the temperature. once again, 16 degrees in aberdeen felt like spring. it was minus nine in the morning in oxfordshire. but i think over the next few days the temperatures will balance out a little bit i think back to back to normal. now here's the weather. a cold front moving through the northwest of the uk during the early hours of wednesday morning. mild here, two nine in belfast and glasgow. in the south we have a touch of frost and there'll be some mist and fog around as well first thing. so the forecast for wednesday, early rain in the north clears to sunshine. really a lovely afternoon here, bar, a few showers, the rest of the country, a little bit of rain in the afternoon i think across wales, maybe the midlands
10:59 pm
to temperatures typically between around seven and ten degrees celsius. and then come the evening that a weakening weather front should reach the south of the country. so there'll be a little bit of rain there, too, by.
