9:30 pm
this is bbc news. the headlines. a "high—altitude object" is shot down by us fighterjets over alaska— white house spokesmanjohn kirby wouldn't confirm if it was a ballon but says it posed "a threat to the safety of civilian aircraft" hope and despair in turkey and syria, as the painstaking search for survivors continues — more than 23 thousand people are known to have died after monday's earthquakes syria's government gives permission for international aid for victims of the devastating earthquakes to be sent to rebel—held areas. this follows days of appeals by aid agencies. thousands of tents, blankets and hygiene kits are among the resources being collected for victims. former newcastle united footballer christian atsu is still missing in the turkish quake.
9:31 pm
his partner believes he's alive and calls for equipment to be sent to the collapsed building where he was living. at 10:00pm, we'll be here with a full round—up of the days news. first — the big cases: found under the floor. a warning this film contains distressing details. avon and somerset police issued an appeal last week to trace 25—year—old bennylyn burke. avon and somerset constabulary asked us to carry out a safe and well check at an address in dundee, following their missing person enquiries. a 50—year—old man has been arrested in dundee by police investigating - the disappearance of a woman.
9:32 pm
we would describe innes as presenting as very cold and callous and not remorseful in any way. now, officers searching for the missing woman, bennylyn burke, and her two—year—old daughterjellica, have recovered two bodies in dundee. translation: he said bennylynl was found in a black garbage bag. personally, this is one of the most harrowing and sobering inquiries. that i've ever been involved in. and will ever be involved in. translation: we have a happy life here in the philippines. _ she was kind, i didn't know anyone who was bennylyn*s enemy.
9:33 pm
she was very kind. very down to earth. my sister has a lot of best friends here, many friends. there's noting bad i can say about my sister. bennylyn grew up here. this is where she studied. in god's grace, during that time, i started working. i didn't study, so i could support bennylyn at school. our father also supported her, so we were all making a contribution, so bennylyn could graduate. translation: she met someone from the uk on the internet. - then started internet dating. they kept chatting and become closer.
9:34 pm
then the guy from the uk visited the philippines and courted her here. she was married. it was a grand wedding in samar. in 2015, the young mother met lexington burke from the uk on an online dating site. they married in samar in the philippines injuly 2018 and daughterjellica was born the following month. in 2019, the couple moved to the uk on jellica's first birthday. morning! the move to the uk was the first time bennylyn had left the philippines. she hoped jellica would have a good future here, but within four months, at the beginning of 2020, the marriage broke down and bennylyn and jellica moved to a sheltered flat in kingswood, just outside bristol. translation: at the shelter, - bennylyn made many friends there, like the mums in bath group.
9:35 pm
that group helped provide milk, food and canned goods, so she could survive at the shelter. they visit her. she also has friends from bristol who help and visit her too. but at that time, when she was at that shelter, bennylyn apparently met another man... ..named andrew innes. he enticed her to visit scotland. andrew innes is a... well, was a software engineer and very au fait with internet and all things computer.
9:36 pm
he was known to be registered on a number of dating sites on the internet. 0nce such site was called filipino cupid, which bennylyn was also registered. bennylyn was a loving, caring mother, who wasjust looking for companionship and had added her details onto that site and met innes through that medium. he was quite calculating though with who he was looking for on these sites, though, wasn't he? yeah. through our enquiries, following the incident, we established that andrew innes had a scraper tool for that website, which in essence, through his computer skills, allowed him to draw the data from that site and categorise it, so it was categorised in terms of women, their age, their height, their build, if they had children, the ages of the children, and there was also a child penalty, depending on how many children they had. so, what we found is that females in their mid to late 20s with young children scored highest on his matrix. the initial contact was just general chat,
9:37 pm
which progressed to video calling, and then i would describe innes' behaviour as moving to more grooming. he offered bennylyn employment as a community relations manager for him, with payment being offered and accommodation. bennylyn, to her credit, basically said, "i can do that from bristol. "i don't need to come to dundee." that progressed to andrew innes also requesting kind of sexy photographs. that's what we find through our enquiries. again, bennylyn declined this request and tried to stay at arm's length, but enjoyed the companionship, which she was really looking for. but the persistence continues from andrew innes and eventually, it was that agreement that they meet up. days before meeting bennylyn in person, innes' internet searches included... ..and... it's thursday the 18th of february 2021. bennylyn and her sister shela are video chatting. bennylyn is travelling
9:38 pm
in andrew innes' car withjellica. he's driving herfrom bristol to his house in dundee for the weekend after meeting on an online dating site. despite the uk being in lockdown, innes has driven 440 miles to bristol to meet 25—year—old bennylyn. translation: she told me - they were already inside the car, that they were on their way to scotland. i asked her who she was with and asked to see him, so she showed me the guy's face. bennylyn took pity on him because he could only sleep in the car, since he's not allowed to sleep inside the shelter. he could only sleep in the car, so he decided to invite her to scotland. bennylyn thought about it at first, went anyway. she was curious about scotland, if it was beautiful. and she was promised
9:39 pm
that she would be back by monday. 0ur assessment is that bennylyn didn't intend to stay long in dundee, as there were no overnight bags. we've nothing to indicate that there was any kind of long term serious relationship and it was very much, as you say, a trip to dundee. and in fact, we know there are photographs at various tourist sites across the city. we talk a lot. with the time difference of six to seven hours... ..i have time to chat in the evenings, which is usually morning or afternoon in her time. we're always chatting.
9:40 pm
every day. bennylyn and shela chat on friday the 19th of february. it's the last contact they'll ever have. over the next day, shela grows concerned that her sister isn't replying to her messages and contacts innes. on sunday the 21st of february, shela receives a message from him.
9:41 pm
innes tells shela that bennylyn and jellica are with another man she met online, a teacher. this is a lie, the first of many. he said he was upset. i got several messages from andrew innes. i figured he was upset. he even mentioned that he would give bennylyn to a friend, a teacher in glasgow... ..because he was no longer into her. innes tells shela that bennylyn wanted to hide at his house because jellica's father wants custody of her and wants bennylyn to be deported back to the philippines. he says he's worried he'll get caught harbouring bennylyn. he said he was scared to be caught by the police, something like that, until i asked for bennylyn again, where was she, i wanted to speak to her,
9:42 pm
i wanted to chat with her, but he would say that she was asleep, this and that, or that she's with a friend, "i gave her to a friend." he was already making alibis. innes continues this facade, telling shela that bennylyn is safe in glasgow and that she had to get rid of her phone to hide from the authorities. innes cuts off contact, saying he needs to delete everything from his phone and computer, so the police can't find bennylyn if they search his house. after days of no contact, shela says their elder brother has a dream. translation: my brother said that in his dream, - he was looking at photos of bennylyn, jellica. he could see some faces clearly, but others were blurred.
9:43 pm
that's when we felt something was wrong. that was it. they're already dead. 0n the 1st of march, two weeks after they left bristol, bennylyn and jellica are reported missing when they miss an appointment. avon and somerset police issued an appeal last week to trace - 25—year—old bennylyn burke. translation: l was i contacted by the police. my other daughter, shela, gave my contact number to the scotland police. the scotland police called me around 11 o'clock at night, told me what happened. that bennylyn was missing. we first became aware of this -
9:44 pm
from avon and somerset constabulary, this was a missing person inquiry, regarding bennylyn burke - and her daughter, jellica. avon and somerset constabulary asked us to carry out a safe and well- check at an address in dundee, following their missing - person enquiries. through avon and somerset's work, |they had information that bennylyn| may have been in dundee the week previous to the 5th of march, - so from that, and obviously having a dundee connection, _ carried out further work- and identified that a lone vehicle had travelled from dundee to bristol and made the returnjourney. - once the information . came up from england, officers were despatched to 21 troon avenue _ so the police arrive at the address, see the vehicle that had _ been identified to us within the driveway. | the door's answered by andrew innes. he only opens the door slightly. he doesn't allow the officersl
9:45 pm
in at that time, but is advised of the missing person inquiry. he confirms that he knows bennylyn. the officer again tried to get in, but were refused. - to their credit, they persisted. innes eventually allowed them . access, to allow them to conclude the missing person enquiries for avon and somerset. - as that questioning continued, - innes again confirmed about bennylyn and jellica being within dundee, but he had dropped them off- at cumbernauld and left them in the care of a male, - which the officers then challenged andrew innes and at that point, . he said that he'd murdered bennylyn and jellica and they were _ beneath the kitchen floor. on that day, the 5th of march, police arrest andrew innes. the next day, innes was charged
9:46 pm
in connection with the deaths of bennylyn and jellica. with innes in custody, the search begins of his troon avenue home. two weeks later, after a painstaking excavation, the grim discovery is made. now, officers searching _ for the missing woman bennylyn burke and her two—year—old daughter jellica have recovered - two bodies in dundee. bennylyn had been stabbed and beaten to death with a hammer. jellica had been strangled. having spoken to the interviewing officers at length, they describe innes as presenting as very cold and callous and not
9:47 pm
remorseful in any way. he did make one comment and stated that they were both buried in the kitchen, under a large amount of concrete and it would take a significant amount of time for their recovery. we knew that about the 23rd of february, innes started buying gravel, kitchen cabinets and other tools that obviously would be used for diy. and on the 24th, a skip actually arrived at the property. so we now know that innes ripped out his kitchen, ripped up the floor and was in the process of installing a brand—new one. so the challenge for us was we didn't know where bennylyn and jellica were. we didn't know if there were other victims within that property. so in that regard, we enrolled the help of various experts from the uk and further afield, an archaeologist, anthropologist
9:48 pm
and a forensic geologist, who came with ground penetrating radar to give us the satisfaction that we would carry out a meticulous search of that property, ensuring no other victims, the dignity of bennylyn and jellica and their speedy recovery. translation: it took a month, march 19th,| when bennylyn*s body was found. bennylyn*s body. i got a call from the scotland police. dci graham smith. he said bennylyn was found in a black garbage bag. babyjellica was also there. they had a hard time looking for them because they were buried in concrete under a sink. a pit was dug there.
9:49 pm
that's where they were buried. they were underneath. that's why it's hard. it was hard because you were thinking about your sister fora month, hoping that they were still alive. translation: i was in shock about what happened. - that that happened to my daughter. why was she killed in dundee? my daughter doesn't pick fights. she was kind. god fearing, friendly. why do that to her? what happened to her? when i found out my granddaughter
9:50 pm
was murdered too, it was so painful. it caused such heartache. he murdered an innocent child. even here in the philippines, it's rare that happens — that an innocent child is killed. i was crushed. what an abomination, that he murdered an innocent child. what i really want, in truth, is for there to be justice. andrew innes's trial began at the high court in edinburgh on the 31st of january. members of bennylyn and jellica's family travelled from the philippines and bristol and sat there hiring
9:51 pm
——from the philippines and bristol and sat through harrowing testimony about their deaths. 0n the third day of the trial, andrew innes took to the stand. innes's testimony ranged from bizarre ramblings about dragons to self—pity and crying outbursts, to harrowing details of how he'd killed bennylyn and jellica and concealed their bodies under his floor. his evidence was punctuated by sobs from the public gallery as bennylyn*s family tried to comprehend the horrific details. we are feeling very painful because of what happened to bennylyn but even though it is very painful, it is very heartache in my heart, and we are also thinking of the justice for bennylyn.
9:52 pm
the trial lasted five days. the guilty verdicts were swift. considering the whole circumstances, the punishment on the two charges of murder will be one of 36 years back dated to the 8th of march 2021. this does not mean that this is a sentence of 36 years. you are sentenced to life imprisonment, and you will serve at least 36 years before you can be considered for release on parole. personally, this is one of the most harrowing and sobering inquiries i've ever been involved in and will ever be involved in. the nca described this as a once in a generation inquiry, and i'm hopeful that no one will ever see this again. for bennylyn and jellica's family, after two long harrowing years, justice finally been done.
9:53 pm
but her family want to remember her as a good and caring mother who came to the uk to seek the best for her child. translation: bennylyn was a good mother, she was loving, _ she loves her child. she is caring. she was even caring to her husband. she was kind. there was nothing bad we could say about her. that's why she willingly moved to another country so that her child can study and graduate. it's for her child, to help herfamily. those were the reasons why she decided to go there.

9:55 pm
hello there. it's been a very quiet week thanks to high pressure — a lot of dry weather around, some sunshine too. sunniest in the south, always more cloud, with some rain and wind, across northern scotland. that was how friday started —
9:56 pm
sunny, cold and frosty across the south, like this weather watcher picture shows in berkshire, whereas for the north and west of the highlands it was unsettled, again windy, with outbreaks of rain. now for this weekend it looks like most places will be dry and mild as high pressure really exerts its force right across the country. but it will feed in some moisture—laden air with more cloud around, so sunshine will be limited. this area of high pressure on saturday will nudge a bit further northwards, so it should keep most of the weather fronts at bay, so i think it looks even drier across the north of scotland than what we've had over the last few days. and generally through saturday and sunday we'll be in this milder air mass, as you can see from the yellow colours. saturday looks pretty cloudy. we'll start off with more cloud across the south of the country, so no problems, i think, with widespread frost. stays cloudy through the afternoon. there could be some holes in that cloud to allow for some sunny spells — particularly north—east scotland, north—east england faring best for that. winds will be light for most but still fairly breezy round the edges of the high for the north and west of scotland,
9:57 pm
maybe northern ireland. look at these temperatures — for february it is very mild, ranging between 11 and 13 celsius. through saturday night, it stays largely dry. again the clouds could be thick enough across some western hills, particularly western scotland, for the odd spot of drizzle, but most places will be dry. and again, with a lot of cloud around, it shouldn't be too cold, but where there's any holes in the cloud for any length of time then we could see some pockets of frost, a little bit of fog at times. very little change as we head into part two of the weekend, our area of high pressure still with us, bringing these south or south—westerly winds. again, a lot of cloud around. could see maybe a little bit more sunshine into the afternoon in places than what we'll see on saturday, but again i think most places will be cloudy, and it's going to be largely dry and mild. temperatures for most in double figures. little change as we move out of sunday into monday. 0ur area of high pressure starting to retreat towards the east — that's allowing more southerly winds to come up from biscay, north—west france across our shores. so we may have more sunshine around on monday, certainly
9:58 pm
across england and wales, into southern scotland, so temperatures responding — could be 12 or 13 degrees in the south, 9 or 10 further north. a lot of dry weather around once again. some subtle changes as we head through into tuesday as our area of high pressure pulls away. this area of low pressure and its frontal system may start to work its way into western areas, so we could see more breeze, could be turning windier, more cloud, and a few showers for northern ireland, perhaps western scotland. one or two perhaps dotted around some irish sea coasts, but i think for the majority of the country, it's another dry day, southerly winds, quite a lot of sunshine around, very mild for the time of year. for the rest of next week, it looks like that frontal system and further low pressure systems will work their way in off the atlantic to bring spells of wetter and windier weather at times, but by the end of next week into the following weekend, high pressure might want to build back in, particularly across southern areas, so that'll settle things down in the south. temperature—wise, we will generally remain in the milder air mass — some slightly fresher influxes,
9:59 pm
but i think looking at the outlook, it will stay mild pretty much across the board. unsettled for much of next week, and then towards the end of the following weekend, that high—pressure system could bring some drier and brighter weather towards the south. but stay tuned. see you later.
