8:45 pm
that made me weep with laughter as a child. and frankly, i'd be very surprised if anybody at cis in vauxhall behaved towards their secretaries as bond behaved towards moneypenny. but that doesn't mean we should be banned from reading fleming's novels. not everyone welcomed the reappearance of the former prime minister, with janet edwards asking... we mentioned a couple of weeks ago complaints about hugh edwards and reeta chakrabarti travelling from london to edinburgh to present news bulletins on the day of nicola sturgeon*s resignation, and that this practice of flying news anchors out on location was a regular source of irritation. so regular, in fact, that it happened again last week. jeremy, you're live in kyiv as we approach the one year anniversary on friday. simple question, really,
8:46 pm
but a complicated answer, i suspect. who's winning? clive murray, there, presenting the news at ten from ukraine, where he was all last week. the weary response of mike mckinnon... well, we asked bbc news, not for the first time, why it was felt necessary to send news presenters off on location in that way. they told us...
8:47 pm
do let us know your thoughts on anything we're covering in this programme or on any aspect of bbc news. there will be details of how to contact us at the end of the programme. you have already been letting us know your views on our new studio, as invited, and here are a couple of comments about, well, this sofa. first, john telfer... and irene mackinnon wondered...
8:48 pm
we can reassurejohn that this is actually a different, though admittedly rather similar sofa to that used for breakfast. and in answer to irene, i am very much hoping to have some guests to share it with in the coming weeks, and besides, several other bbc programmes use the studio as well. now, for a long while, views have asked us why it hasn't been possible to watch english regional news programmes in high definition, despite those bulletins being among the most watched programmes on bbc one. cost and the pace of technological change have been the answers. but on newswatch last summer we heard a commitment from the bbc*s director of nations, rhodri telford davies, that hd for the regions would soon arrive. but as costs begin to reduce, and of course, audience expectation changes. we need to get this right. so i would like to believe that
8:49 pm
all our english regions will be available on 101 in hd on your epg at home by early next year. that promise has been kept and as of last week, all standard definition regional bbc one channels on satellite have been replaced by high definition freeview and youview. viewers in england will also be switched over in the next couple of months. and that means that if you're still watching an sd, what you'll see at the end of the news at six or the news at ten, something like this... now it's time to join our colleagues across the nations and regions for the news where you are. from the ten team, it's goodnight. the bbc will soon be making all of its services available in high definition. to access local bbc one programmes, you will need to upgrade to a high definition enabled set top box, though this is progress in the eyes of many people, it's led to objections from others. ruth windsor emailed us last week to ask...
8:50 pm
and doug gillis added... well, the answer is for viewers with sd—only satellite set top boxes to get a new hd enabled set top box. the bbc did put out a press release about this in november, which also advised that all standard definition bbc channels on satellite platforms, notjust the regional ones, will be switched off in a year's time. it has set up a help scheme for those impacted by the changes who need extra information, details of which can be found at...
8:51 pm
and the press release explains the move like this... a viewer complained recently on newswatch that explaining terms like inflation and cabinet reshuffle to the audience was unnecessary and condescending, assuming an excessively low level of knowledge. but when we aired that opinion, we had something of a backlash from those who appreciated things being clarified and spelt out. the issue reared its head again this week following a piece to camera from ireland correspondent, emma vardy, about the new windsor framework deal on the northern ireland protocol. the deal also affects what products customers can buy in their weekly shop because the eu's ban on certain goods like chilled meats entering northern ireland has been scrapped.
8:52 pm
so for shoppers it means that things like sausages from britain or haggis from scotland can be sold on northern ireland's shelves and for parcels being sent from britain to northern ireland, there'll be no need for customs declarations. the response of david harvey... finally, the visit of president biden to meet president zelensky in kyiv last week prompted some diplomatic analysis from robin brandt for the news channel. here's what he actually said. and that is china's most senior diplomat, wang yi, travelling to moscow today, i think to meet sergei lavrov or maybe even vladimir putin.
8:53 pm
but that reference to the veteran russian foreign minister, sergei lavrov completely foxed the bbc*s live subtitling system, thanks to its audio recognition software that came out on screen as i think to meet sergei lover of or vladimir putin. angela lewington took this screengrab for us, commenting wryly... thank you for all your comments this week. if you want to share your opinions about what you see or hear on bbc news, on tv, radio, online and social media, email newswatch@bbc.co.uk or you can find us on twitter at newswatch bbc. you can call us on 0370106676. and do you have a look at our website for previous interviews? bbc.co.uk newswatch. that's all from us.

we'll be back to hear your thoughts about bbc news coverage again next week. hello there let's take a look at the weather for the week ahead. so far the temperature has been above the seasonal average. that's about to change with some cold air for the whole of the uk with the potential for some disruptive snowfall to low levels and even towards the south of england. why? because high pressure is clearing away, allowing cold fronts to slip down from the north to introduce that chilly out together. still not too cold, on saturday, many western spots starting off with a touch of frost. temperatures below freezing here but it's really for western scotland, western england, parts of western wales where we will see the day was my best sunshine. further east, a few spots of drizzle from the clackamas and eastern coastal showers, and some showers, too. this
8:55 pm
is the position of the conference on saturday night, it'sjust is the position of the conference on saturday night, it's just gradually continuing itsjourney saturday night, it's just gradually continuing its journey southwards but the very cold air behind the second cold front which is quite far to the north of scotland still, but some of the showers on sunday across the hills could be falling as snow. further south, across most of the uk, we'll see these showers full as rain but it will already be feeling colder by the coming a descending, temperature dropping by a degree or so, some brighter spells at times. it's on monday when we will see those snow showers stakeholder across much of scotland and down through northey a. localised weather warnings in force from the met office across england, wales, northern ireland, most of the show are still falling as rain. temperatures will be between 7—9 , some added wind chill factor in as well. the cold air takes hold across the whole of the uk as we head into tuesday with our second cold front moving its way down from the north. possibly fairly mild across the far south—west of england also a wave developing in the channel two. and,

some coastal showers. a lot of these falling as snow, of course, snow showers across scotland very difficult to grip against and it will be feeling better particular towards the east coast where the winds will be feeling strong. it will feel sober zero across the vast majority of the uk as we had throughout the day. temperatures 2-3 throughout the day. temperatures 2—3 that's how will feel. the milder air is marked in yellow as an we head through the middle part of the week it will be trying to push in on this atlantic front but of course as it hits the cold air there is a risk that a lot of this rain will turn to sleet and even possibly some snow as well stop there will still be some snow showers across much of the uk but so that northerly wind blowing, of course, and it will be feeling really, very cold. a lot of uncertainty as to what is set to happen is you head through the middle of the week. that milder air will be attempting to move its way further northwards as we head through the latter part of next week, cold air, probably hanging on across scotland and across much of
8:57 pm
northern england, too. the danger is as we see this battleground scenario set at that all of these atlantic fronts bump into the cold air we will start to see some snow and some of the snow is likely to be disruptive but it will also be very difficult to grip against, a lot of the icy conditions, with the snow showers just keeping on falling. there still a lot of disagreement, so what we are confident about is that yes it will turn cold and there will be some snowfall but we are less confident about the extent of the snowfall, particularly towards the snowfall, particularly towards the south of england, and how long the south of england, and how long the cold air is set to last. it would be wise to keep checking the focus.
