this is bbc news. the headlines... the bbc*s director general, tim davie, has apologised for the widespread disruption to bbc sports output today — after presenters and pundits walked out in support of the match of the day host, gary lineker. the prime minsister rishi sunak said he hoped the controversy can be resolved but that it was a matter for the bbc, not the government. the opposition labour party accuses the bbc of bowing to government pressure. the uk's chancellor, jeremy hunt, has met the governor of the bank of england, andrew bailey, to discuss the collapse of silicon valley bank, which mostly financed tech start—ups. the german interior minister, is leading calls to tighten the country's gun ownership laws, after six people were shot dead in hamburg, on thursday.

eight others were wounded in the attack on a group of jehovah's witnesses. next it's time for our world: my escape from afghanistan. in august 2021, the taliban shocked the world as they swept to power in afghanistan. it wasn't long before they began to crack down on the rights of women. last year, i met with activist tamana paryani, who'd been involved in a protest in kabul. after daring to raise her voice, the taliban came in the middle of the night to arrest her. although she was later released, she went into hiding. at the time, it was too dangerous

for us to broadcast her testimony. now she has escaped and she's ready to tell her extraordinary story. kabul, june 2022. afghanistan is now the only country in the world where female education is forbidden. reports have been emerging of women standing up for their rights being forcibly disappeared.

i wanted to meet tamana, who'd been arrested earlier in the year forjoining a protest against the new taliban leaders. tamana managed to film a video and upload it to facebookjust before being taken away. i wanted to see the apartment she'd been taken from and see if i could speak to any of the neighbors about what happened that night. shortly after they were arrested, a family member managed

to get into the apartment and film the aftermath. months on, the signs of forced entry were still visible on the door. tamana was taken, along with her four sisters, but the videos she had uploaded had started to go viral. there are growing concerns for women in afghanistan protesting against the curbing of their rights under the taliban. tamana paryani was taken from her apartment by armed men. world leaders were outraged. human rights organisations immediately condemned and demanded their release. i quizzed the taliban directly on my show about the case.
9:35 pm
i managed to get a message through to tamana and she agreed to meet me in a safe house the next day. after she'd been released from prison, she went into hiding with herfamily, fearing the taliban would be back again. there was a suspicion that the house was being watched. 25—year—old tamana had come to the attention of the authorities for organising a string of protests demanding women's rights in kabul. injanuary 2022, she had organised a march to raise questions about the disappearance of a female prison officer, alia azizi.

they were banned from leaving the country and had their passports taken away. they were also threatened that if they spoke with the media, theirfather and brother would be arrested. in total, there were 32 women arrested in a series of raids on female activists in january across the country. since then, tamana has moved from house to house, relying on the good will of others to keep her hidden.
9:41 pm
the car in front is what tamana is using to get to the next location. we're going through multiple taliban checkpoints and i can imagine it's quite nerve—racking for her. the safe house was on the other side of town. the owner did not want to be identified for his safety, but agreed to speak with me. we've just arrived here with tamanna. she's crossed kabul to get here to safety. just tell me why you've allowed her to come here. when the taliban came to power, and knowing what you know about her steeliness, her determination, were you worried?
9:42 pm
tamana's experience is like so many other female activists in the country. so many of them have been driven out, pushed out of the public eye. they now feel trapped inside their homes in this very suffocating environment. and it's unclear what their future will be. there seems to be like a pattern emerging — women coming out demanding their rights, the taliban intimidating and detaining some of them, and then the women

being too afraid to come out and speak up again. and this is exactly what's happened to tamana. it was time for me to leave kabul. tamana and her family were starting to see there was no future for them in afghanistan. months later, i received a message from her. she and her sisters were on the move to the eastern border with pakistan. they filmed themselves dressing in local clothes to blend in.

tamana and her entire family made it across the border to pakistan. butjust as i was finalising my plans to meet them there... they're on a plane to germany. i travelled to meet them in germany, where they were living in temporary accommodation just outside of cologne. i arrived just in time for lunch.

hello, there. following the disruptive snow that we had thursday and friday across the uk, particularly across the hills in the north, we've been left with something of a wintry wonderland to start the day on saturday. plenty of snow on the ground, plenty of sunny skies. however, through saturday, the cloud thickened and we had a return of some snowfall into the north of wales. now, as far as the amount of snow that we still have lying around,
9:55 pm
snowdonia, 22 centimetres of snow. leek in the staffordshire moors, not far behind that with 19 centimetres. and there's a bit more snow to come saturday night from this weather system. a few centimetres over the hills, but ultimately milder air is following and that's what we'll have with us on sunday. so there'll be a significantjump upwards in temperatures and a significant thaw of that lying snow. now, we'll be starting off the day on a bright note with a bit of sunshine, but it will turn quite cloudy through the afternoon with outbreaks of rain starting to move in, especially across western areas. but look at these temperatures — 10 to 14 degrees widely. it's going to feel very mild. the only exception, really, is that the northern isles of scotland, lerwick, just four. now through sunday night, we see further outbreaks of rain and increasingly through the night the winds will start to strengthen with gales expected. temperatures actually stay up well into double figures for most, although there will be a frost across the far north of scotland, where winds start to turn around to a bit more of a northerly direction. now, heading from sunday into monday, this area of low pressure is going to be bringing

heavy outbreaks of rain. the rain easing to showers. strong winds around, gale force at times, but notice winds start to come back to a northerly direction in more of scotland. and with that comes the risk of some snow over high ground, above 200 metres elevation or so. a windy day for all of us. gales gust into the fifties of miles now across england and wales could blow down one or two tree branches. but it stays mild for many of us. the cold air limited in its extent, really, across northern scotland. but it's not going to stay there. as we head through tuesday and wednesday, northerly winds dive southwards across the country, dragging that colder polar maritime airflow back in across the uk. now, there will be some snow around on tuesday, particularly for northern scotland. accumulations, well, mostly in the hills above 200 metres elevation. a few wintry showers elsewhere, bit of hail mixed in with some of those. but also there'll be some sunshine. now, despite the sunny skies that some of you will see, it's going to feel an awful lot colder, with temperatures dropping back down into single figures and there'll be a sharp frost
9:57 pm
to start the day on wednesday. again, some further snow showers for northern scotland, one or two wintry ones elsewhere. and a band of rain starts to move in off the atlantic. that looks like it could bring some snowfalljust for a time into northern ireland through wednesday afternoon. so we'll need to keep a close eye on how that pans out. the risk of snow extends across parts of england and scotland, just for a time, and then milder air works in and any snow will turn back to rain. so, there is a risk of seeing a little bit of snowfall wednesday night and into thursday, mostly over the hills. and as i say for most places, not lasting, it'lljust turn back to rain with a thaw, resuming. temperatures again reaching around nine or ten degrees celsius. so, double figures back across parts of the south. but the cold air still hang on to a degree across more northern areas. friday and the weekend, the weather pattern looks like it's going to be rather unsettled so expect some further outbreaks of rain. mild for quite a few of us. but there's a question mark as to whether cold air returns to the far north of scotland. so we're not sure just about that detail just yet.
