had some of sunshine, but we also had some of these huge, impressive shower clouds that popped up and gave some heavy rain and even some flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder in places. right now, we have still got some showers about, one clump of heavy rain close to the far south—east of england. we will keep some showers going elsewhere as we head through the night. there will be some clear spells, but generally a lot of cloud and quite misty and murky conditions. for most of us, it is going to be a mild night, a mild start to the weekend, but with this area of low pressure in charge. the winds will be light, so when you see the big showers popping up again, they will be slow moving. at the same time, more persistent rain will work across south—east england and east anglia, just as it did today. even where we see sunshine, we will have showers, some of it will be heavy and sundry. there will be dry gaps between, so the showers are hit

and miss, but another mad day. a little drier in northern ireland through the afternoon as this band of rain works into scotland, some heavy rain in the final for a time. shetland should hold on to some sunshine. forthe shetland should hold on to some sunshine. for the second half of the weekend, we have this ridge of high pressure bolting in. that will give us a window of fine weather, some spells of sunshine for most of us on sunday. a few showers in the final. by sunday. a few showers in the final. by the afternoon, cloud and rain getting into northern ireland, maybe getting into northern ireland, maybe getting to the west of scotland later in the day. a little bit cooler, but not a lot cooler. it will stay mild as we head to next week. while there will be some spells of sunshine, we can expect a lot of rain and some brisk winds at times. have a good weekend. thanks, ben. and that's bbc news at ten on friday 17th march. there's more analysis of the day's main stories on newsnight with faisal islam, which isjust getting under way on bbc two. the news continues here on bbc one, as now it's time to join our

this is bbc news. we will have the headlines and all the main news stories for you at the top of the hours straight after this programme. the cars can go from zero to 100 in four seconds. they're made of 80,000 parts. the brakes can hit a thousand degrees.
10:42 pm
this is formula one. well, this year's season is getting under way and it is jam packed full of tech. and it's notjust the cars. yeah, it's all about the data these days. they collect as much of it as they can from on and off the track to help make decisions which could change the results. and alastair keen has been given exclusive access to the alpine fi team to find out how they race. being behind the wheel of a formula one car is a privilege. driving the fastest car in the world. the adrenaline rush is so high. it is a privilege because there are more than 1000 people working in ourteam. i'm the guy that's being granted the access. that feeling of speed and the g—forces you're feeling through the corners due to the speed you're carrying is just so satisfying.
10:43 pm
what do you make of the car that's been unveiled behind us? well, i think it looks beautiful. no, i mean, in terms of evolution, obviously, i'm more interested in the sort of changes and tweaks which has been done on that car compared to last year's front wing. the back of the car, which the engineers have changed to improve the performance. so now we need to get it to the track and see how it behaves. i guess every single team, though, is doing the same thing and they're all trying to try to push their cars and their technology and everything. does it reallyjust level the playing field or can you get a competitive edge? you can get a competitive edge as long as you always question yourself. technologies evolve very quickly. it's very fast moving world. and in formula one, if you look at the cars from 20 years ago, ten years ago, five years ago, it's just
10:44 pm
it's a continuous progress. hi. how's it going? good morning. thank you. good. thanks for having us here. here we are in the what we call the design office. this is where all the engineers are working together to extract maximum performance off of this beautiful object. that is a formula one car. lots of what's on people's screens in here is top secret, but a lot of it is about data. yeah. yeah, absolutely. you know, we are highly data driven kind of business because of regulation. those rules of f1 guide everything the teams do in their factories from limiting how much testing the cars are put through to capping the money they can spend. that's why the team here are working with microsoft to gather analytics and make sure every penny is spent wisely. but it's notjust data from races being looked at. we've been given rare access
10:45 pm
to the simulator where esteban ocon is doing laps in anticipation of his next race. this is a closely guarded secret, with each team designing their own versions of this tech. how important is all that background stuff that happens away from the track? it's basically the same work as we would do if we were testing on the track. so we have a replica of the model we have on the track itself and we are working to prepare ourselves the best to arrive on site and be completely ready. do you ever worry the data and the technology is taking away from the driving and the sport of formula one? not at all, no, because we are completely involved with this data as well. time moves forward. the cars are getting more and more technology. this is formula one is the peak of what you can do. this is the fastest machines on the planet. you know, astronauts in space will have thousands of data as well. and for us, it's the same thing. but on the ground.
10:46 pm
hey. come on in. welcome to my new home. it's around 2100 square feet, and it's packed full of curves and contortions. this place has such an unusual, futuristic feel about it. i mean, there's not a straight wall in the place. you might find yourself wondering, how do you make such curvy walls? well, if you look at them a bit closer, you might be able to work out the answer. this is 3d printing at scale. it's a largely automated method of manufacturing houses, and it's thanks to a fleet of giant 3d printers. they squirt out a layer of material and then they squirt out another and another and another.
10:47 pm
icon has partnered up with one of the biggest house builders in america to deliver 100 homes here in georgetown, texas. hey. you're connor? i'm connor. spencer, right? yes. nice to meet you. great. welcome to the job site of the future. now, the walls aren'tjust thin lines of concrete. there's multiple layers forming concrete columns to add rigidity reinforced by steel. they're printed using a proprietary material, a cement like substance that's air tight, while also providing increased insulation. but how easy is it to be both creative and cost efficient? the reason we exist is to be faster, cheaper, more resilient. the very awesome thing about 3d printing is it allows for you to do that at scale. so we're talking about delivering tens to hundreds of homes that can all be different in design and delivered simultaneously,
10:48 pm
because the faster you can produce houses, the less you have to staff those work sites and job sites. and then you also have all the design, freedom and flexibility that you could possibly imagine. plus, you get a more resilient, built material. you have your primary bedroom here. the bedroom. right. and being british. can i just show you the most exciting thing about an american home? i'm guessing this is the walk in wardrobe. the walk in closet, right? this is the walk in closet. i've never owned a walk in closet. no? no, no, no, no, no. this is the most things i'd be in here all the time. welcome to america. not only america, but texas. right? everything's bigger. so what's really different about 3d printing is that all of the permanent fixtures can be laid down at the same time. this includes things like the kitchen island and the holes
10:49 pm
for plumbing and electrics. the show home we started in is called house zero, and that was designed by a different architecture firm, and it's more of a show home for what could be possible in the future. it's not for sale, which is a crying shame because it's definitely my kind of place. and actually, my new favourite thing about how we're going to be living in the future is how we'll fill our baths. there's no tap in that tub. instead, you fill it from the ceiling. actually, i have been reassured that in the future they will still have taps. now, despite all the talk, self—driving cars still aren't quite here yet. i mean, for good reason. they are the hardest autonomous vehicles to get, right, because they have to navigate the chaos of the open road, which has other idiots like me on it. you said it.
10:50 pm
but there are lots of vehicles that can drive themselves in more controlled situations and they're often used in the logistics industry. so back in austin, texas, paul carter's been to meet a company that's bringing the humble forklift up to date. yes, the humble forklift has been the backbone of global industry for over 100 years, and now they're getting a 21st century makeover. here at fox robotics in austin. they've created what they call the world's first intelligent forklift. beyond being just self—driving, it can unload and receive packages completely autonomously. so we start with a standard counterbalanced stand up forklift. we add sensors for both perception, being able to understand the world around the forklift as well as safety. so our primary sensors are, we have one camera right
10:51 pm
here between the forks. it is both a depth camera as well as an regular camera that helps the pellet detector so that it can determine. is that a pellet? what type of pellet is it? what direction is it? our other main sensors is we have three micro scan lidar, so there's two fork ward and there's one if we walk all the way around, there's one back here that steer. ward oh, okay. all the way around, there's one back here that steer. ward oh, okay. yeah, i see it. yep. so that pretty much gives the 360 degree view. the robot can unload 25 pallets in an hour, but there are limitations. it's really easy to build a robot that works once building a robot that works every single time. day in, day out. that's a that's something that matters a lot to us. figuring out how to both meet the the workflow needs that our customers have and, you know, maintain our perfect safety record and be compliant with all the all the required standards is a real challenge for introducing any kind of new autonomous system
10:52 pm
into a workplace. being around them when they work is slightly unnerving at first. it's quite strange how quickly you get used to the fact that this is just driving around by itself. i'm already completely happy with the fact that there's a very large, very heavy piece of equipment driving around autonomously. as the world changes and automation becomes more common. it's clear that innovation and industry face some conflicting times ahead. but in the brave new world, your next parcel delivery might have been on part of its journey. thanks to one of these. and that's it for the short version of the program. the full length show can be found on iplayer. thanks for watching. we'll see you soon. bye bye.
10:53 pm
hello there. we started our week on a colder note with further wintry showers around, but we closed out with the milder air once again winning the battle. it was a beautiful afternoon on friday across north—east england with temperatures peaking into the mid—teens. but it was a classic spring story for many. sunny spells and scattered showers and some of those heavy and thundery. and that theme is going to continue for the first half of the weekend. sunshine and sharp showers around on saturday. a ridge of high pressure will build on sunday, though — quite a fine, dry story to come. but for saturday, it's all about this area of low pressure. more persistent rain and eventually some cold air across the far north of scotland will turn the back edge
10:54 pm
of that across the northern isles to snow for a time. but for the bulk of the country, we're sat in this mild air. so it will be a milder day, but with further sunny spells and scattered showers. on saturday, lighter winds, so the showers could be pretty slow moving. and once again, they could be heavy with the odd rumble of thunder. persistent rain into western scotland, gradually moving into the northern isles as we close out the day. here in the colder air, 5 to 8 celsius. but further south, we could see temperatures peaking once again into the mid teens in places. now, as we move out of saturday night into sunday, the winds will strengthen as this rain just moves through the northern isles. and the back edge of that could see a wintry mix developing, which is worth bearing in mind. but with a ridge of high pressure building, its going to be a relatively quiet night to come. and under those clearer skies, as that rain, sleet and snow eases away, temperatures will fall away. low single figures in scotland, but a cooler start to sunday morning. hopefully, that will translate into a sunny one
10:55 pm
as we see clearer skies. a little bit of cloud just lingering across the south—east, sunshine coming through throughout the day, gradually during the middle of the afternoon, clouding over from the west. but not a bad mothering sunday in prospect. temperatures are likely to peak between 5 and 9 celsius in the north, maybe around 11 to 13 further south. into monday, another area of low pressure looks set to develop and that is going to allow a south—westerly flow. the milder air is set to return, so it turns milder and wetter for the start of the new working week. the heaviest of the rain moving its way across scotland. there'll be showers pushing in along west—facing coasts and often windy at times as well. the best of the drier, brighter weather reserved for eastern areas, where once again, those temperatures will sit at around 1a celsius the high. that frontal system has yet to clear away, so on tuesday, we will continue to see plenty of showers. now, thejet stream, as we look further ahead,
10:56 pm
looks likely to remain to the south of us. it's the jet stream that's responsible for steering areas of low pressure, so we'll see one low moving in from the atlantic, only to be replaced by yet another. and look at how close the isobars are — the winds a feature. as that low drifts off to the east, it then pulls down a northerly wind, so towards the end of the week and into the weekend, we will start to see cooler air potentially winning out. it's a long way ahead, still plenty to play for, but one things for certain, it is going to be unsettled through the week ahead. showers or longer spells of rain, often windy at times, potentially getting that little bit cooler towards the end of next weekend. that's it. take care.
