topped up today. figures have been topped up today. we have seen wet and windy weather meeting across southern parts of the uk and also rain into northern ireland. some of that rain will continue tonight into northern ireland, parts of wales. elsewhere extensive cloud, missed and mark stop not a particularly cold night with frost in some parts of north—east scotland. —— mist and murk. the dove cloud rolling into many central and eastern parts. it will be damp and cool in places on the east coast. in the west cooler than of late, highs of 12 or 13. for the second half of the weekend we see this area of high pressure building its way. that will settle things down. sunday is actually looking like a pretty decent day. there will still be a fair amount of
6:31 pm
cloud, particularly in the west. one or two showers. most places should see a decent amount of sunshine. while the temperatures do not look spectacular, given the sunshine it will not look too bad. into the start of april it will slowly through the weekend become drier and brighter. good news. thanks, ben. you can keep up with all the latest developments on bbc website. from the six team, it's goodbye. the news continues here on bbc one, as now it's time to join our colleagues across the nations and regions for the news where you are. hello, and welcome to sportsday — i'm hugh ferris. our headlines this evening... michael vaughan is cleared of using racist language towards a former yorkshire team—mate after a panel decided that on the balance of probabilities, the charge wasn't proven. wimbledon*s u—turn — it lifts the ban on russian and belorussian players for this year's championships —
6:32 pm
a decision one ukrainian politician has called "immoral". maybe not the title—decider of recent years, but it could have a big say on the destination of the premier league trophy. domestic football returns with manchester city against liveprool. also coming up on sportsday... the ipl*s back — so for the first time, here's a big six. there'll be plenty more over the next couple of months from the jewel in franchise cricket's crown. and young by name and in years — but that won't stop this paralympic champion plotting to take over the world. hello again. former england cricket captain michael vaughan has been cleared on the "balance of probabilities" of using racist language towards former yorkshire
6:33 pm
team—mates including azeem rafiq during his time playing for the county. the allegations brought by rafiq prompted an inquiry by the england and wales cricket board, and the panel that heard the charges has today delivered its verdict. our sports editor dan roan is at headingley for us. dan, this is the conclusion of a long and, for cricket, difficult process. yes, this scandal has cast a shadow over headingley, the home of yorkshire county cricket club, the most successful county in the history of the english game getting on for two years now. and it's extended well beyond this county as well. this was a moment of reckoning notjust well. this was a moment of reckoning not just for well. this was a moment of reckoning notjust for michael vaughan, of not just for michael vaughan, of course, and notjust for michael vaughan, of course, and is the highest profile defendant, it felt like he arguably had the most to lose. and it will come as a huge relief, of course, the fact the panel found him not guilty of making a racist remark 1a years ago. so much of a focus on
6:34 pm
him, but yorkshire had already admitted for charges, including a failure to confront what they described as systemic use of racist and discriminatory language over a prolonged period of time. another of theirformer players, gary prolonged period of time. another of their former players, gary ballance, reputed his charge, leaving five other former players and coaches including matthew haag art and tim preston, and all of those five had at least some charges upheld by the panel, disrepute charges. so another damaging day for this club, and it has a long path ahead of it in terms of recovery. but as i said, lots of the focus on vaughan, and earlier on after he learned that he had cleared his name and been found not guilty, we spoke to his lawyer. i his name and been found not guilty, we spoke to his lawyer.— we spoke to his lawyer. i think michael himself— we spoke to his lawyer. i think michael himself will— we spoke to his lawyer. i think michael himself will be - we spoke to his lawyer. i think michael himself will be able i we spoke to his lawyer. i thinkj michael himself will be able to
6:35 pm
we spoke to his lawyer. i think- michael himself will be able to give greater detail about exactly the toll it _ greater detail about exactly the toll it takes on him, notjust him but his_ toll it takes on him, notjust him but his family and close friends as it were _ but his family and close friends as it were but— but his family and close friends as it were. but there's certainly been difficult _ it were. but there's certainly been difficult and challenging times, dark times. and i think the position for everybody involved, not just michael — for everybody involved, not just michael but you've got lots of other people _ michael but you've got lots of other people that have been part of the allegations, people from the yorkshire club and on the other side of the _ yorkshire club and on the other side of the argument, it takes a toll on them and — of the argument, it takes a toll on them and a — of the argument, it takes a toll on them and a lot of different ways. one of— them and a lot of different ways. one of the — them and a lot of different ways. one of the criticisms i could be made — one of the criticisms i could be made about having to use cdc proceedings is that it is adversarial, it will invite claim and counterclaim, it invites people to call_ and counterclaim, it invites people to call each — and counterclaim, it invites people to call each other liars, because that's— to call each other liars, because that's the — to call each other liars, because that's the adversarial process that those _ that's the adversarial process that those litigators operate in. and that can — those litigators operate in. and that can be very damaging and a harmful— that can be very damaging and a harmful process. it's often very good _ harmful process. it's often very good at — harmful process. it's often very good at getting to the truth and getting — good at getting to the truth and getting to the heart of the matter, but ultimately it can cause a lot of damage. — but ultimately it can cause a lot of damage, as well, in the process.
6:36 pm
azeem rafiq is very much at the centre of the story, what's his reaction been to the decisions released by the cdc today? this has been a long road of course for azeem rafiq, a man whose initial allegations here led to internal investigations at yorkshire, and the fact that he was found to have suffered racial harassment and bullying, get yorkshire decided they wouldn't punish anybody here, that's really what ignited this scandal two years ago. there's been various staging coasts along the way, but he was the key witness in the case that the ecb brought, and of course gave evidence at the disciplinary hearing at the start of this month. he told me earlier that this did provide him with some closure when i spoke to him — he's had to move abroad, such
6:37 pm
as the threats and intimidation that he says he now faces as a result of turning whistle—blower. here's what he had to say. i feel vindicated. seven out of the eight charges have been upheld and you know, - most importantly, one of the main reasons i spoke out, dan, - was to highlight the widerl problems across the game and the institutional racism - at yorkshire county cricket club. and i think that has been proven overand overagain. _ does it disappoint you that the panel found that michael vaughan had not said the words that you alleged he had said? for me, from day one, . i have tried to very much make sure this does not. become about individuals. you know, i spoke about my experiences and what i went through, and i have done that openly from day one. - you know, it has been . corroborated by players, coaches, and other people present. from my point of view, i can only talk about my experiences. - look, of course, i am disappointed, i don't agree with the findings - but i respect them.
6:38 pm
michael vaughan always insisted he was innocent, but after he was charged last year he stepped away from his bbc broadcasting work. and today in a statement, the bbc said that... they made the point that vaughan was not in contract, and they'll have to decide whether or not to restore him to the test match special line—up later. fault elsewhere as well, the ecb were heavily criticised by vaughan both during the hearing entity today for their disciplinary process. i think there be scrutiny on how they handled this saga. called for reconciliation and for lessons to be learned, and wounds to heal. that won't be easy here though, the county faces a financial crisis because it's had to pay out £1.5
6:39 pm
million or more in compensation to members of staff that were sacked in the wake of this scandal. they also released a statement today saying they had to bear response ability and take accountability, and accept blame for the culture that developed here. they need to restore trust, but it won't be easy — there's about to be a game wide landmark report issued which, if expectations are to be believed, will be a chesaning report with some difficult findings across cricket as a whole when it comes to levels of diversity and inclusion, and underrepresentation —— it will be a chastening report. we may yet hear of appeals from some of those found to be guilty. dan. of those found to be guilty. dan, thank ou of those found to be guilty. dan, thank you very — of those found to be guilty. dan, thank you very much _ of those found to be guilty. dan, thank you very much indeed. after less than six months in thejob, the chairman of cricket scotland, anjan luthra, has resigned following a row about progress on dealing with racism. a report last year found the leadership and governance
6:40 pm
of scottish cricket to be institutionally racist, with luthra promising to clean up the problem when he took up the role. he was criticised for claiming "significant progress" had been made. but in announcing his resignation, he "fundamentally disagreed" with the way governing body sportscotland is running the sport. sportscotland say they're "fully committed" to helping rebuild scottish cricket. wimbledon will allow russian and belarusian players to compete at this year's championships — providing it's under a neutralflag. they've reversed last year's ban that was made in response to russia's invasion of ukraine. our tennis correspondent russell fuller has the details. this decision effectively brings wimbledon into line with the other grand slam tournaments, and also the other events that take place around the world on the tour. it means that russians and belarusians can compete, but they will have to do so as neutral athletes, and they'll
6:41 pm
also have to say that they don't receive any funding from their governments or that they are actively supporting those governments. a lot has changed in the last 12 months, the decision very different, and this was something the all england club and the lta have been grappling with in recent months. they did not want a repeat of last year, all those bruised relationships and financial penalties, and also the threat to the future viability of the events in places like eastbourne. here's what the all england club chief executive told me about why they've come up with a different decision 12 months on. , ., come up with a different decision 12 months on-— months on. first of all, the government _ months on. first of all, the government guidance - months on. first of all, the i government guidance enables decorations, but last year we didn't believe _ decorations, but last year we didn't believe that option was viable in the time — believe that option was viable in the time we had to look at it. we worked _ the time we had to look at it. we worked incredible hard with the government and the tours to get that guidance _ government and the tours to get that guidance to a place where we believe to the declaration route is now viable — to the declaration route is now viable in _ to the declaration route is now viable. in addition, we've had a year— viable. in addition, we've had a year of— viable. in addition, we've had a year of belarusian and russian

6:44 pm
visas to enter the uk. another minister also seemed to ban ukrainian athletes from taking part in any olympic qualiying events if they have to compete against russians, and governing bodies could even be punished with sanctions if they did participate. earlier this week, the ioc recommended that russian and belarusian athletes return to competition as neutrals. vladyslav heraskevych is a two—time olympian, and says he nor his fellow athletes will support the notion if it proves to be true. i'm not supporting it at all because in my opinion, it's a boycott without coalition, it makes no sense for ukraine first of all because they are just giving this international stage to a russian athletes, giving them an opportunity to push their narratives into competitions, giving them an opportunity to make a relationship
6:45 pm
better with the whole world, and maybe also show some picture of being united with the world. so i'm not really super with this idea. it makes no sense for ukrainian sport, and also for the ukrainian government and our country at all. so just getting to this desk giving this stage to the russians, is not right in my opinion. we shouldn't be forced, and if you ask me, i also wouldn't take part in competitions because the russians are as possible for this war. i will not come to competitions, or i and act in the way as they seem. so maybe i won't compete, but all protest. i think in my personal opinion that, yeah, if i
