and critised the manhattan district attorney for campaigning to bring charges against him. first, let me say, i think the unprecedented indictment of a former president of the united states for a campaign finance issue is an outrage. it is clear to the overwhelming majority of the american people that this is nothing short of a political prosecution, being effected by a manhattan da who literally campaigned on bringing charges against one particular american. and i must tell you that that should be offensive to every american, left, right and centre. every american deserves equal treatment under the law, and i believe the american people will see this for what it is.

this is news, sport and for a full round—up, from the bbc sport centre, here's 0lly foster hello and thanks forjoining us.. the former yorkshire bowler azeem rafiq says he feels *vindicated' after a cricket discipline commission found charges had been proved against five former players of bringing the game into disrepute through their use of racist language. the former england captain michael vaughan was cleared "on the balance of probabilities" of using racist language towards some his former teamates and rafiq. vaughan's lawyer has criticised the process and the toll it's taken on all parties one of the criticisms that could be made around having to use cdc proceedings is that it is adversarial, it will invite claim and counterclaim, it invites people to call each other liars because that's the environment litigators operate in.

and that can be very damaging and a harmful process. it's very often very good at getting to the truth, in the case of the heart of the matter, but ultimately it can cause a lot of damage as well in the process. after less than six months in thejob. the chairman of cricket scotland, anjan luthra has resigned following a row about progress on dealing with racism. a report last yearfound the leadership and governance of scottish cricket to be institutionally racist... with luthra promising to clean up the problem when he took up the role. in announcing his resignation luthra said he "fundamentally disagreed" with the way governing body sportscotland is running the sport. sportscotland say they're "fully committed" to helping rebuild scottish cricket. wimbledon will allow russian and belarusian players to compete the ukrainian foreign minister has describing the decision as *immoral*.

lasting over a week. petrol bombs have been thrown through windows. in one instance, a pipe bomb was used. properties have been smashed with hammers and bricks. many of them, say police, have children inside. these attacks are completely unacceptable, incredibly reckless, and place our communities at grave risk. we are utilising the specialist expertise of armed response unit officers and we are working closely with our colleagues in the paramilitary crime task force to counter the threat posed by these gangs. what is the impact of attacks on homes like that? a number of people have left their home and obviously, that has a significant impact on them and their children and their wider family circumstances. the disorder has been linked to what is believed to be around 50 members who have been expelled from the loyalist paramilitary group the uda. decades ago, loyalist paramilitaries were involved in the conflict in northern ireland known as the troubles, attacking catholic communities in sectarian violence. but today, the organisations have largely become gangs involved in the drugs trade.

this is stuff that should have ended 25, 29 years ago. you know, there has been a three—year—old girl in a house that was attacked. i'm told an elderly woman had her windows put in. a petrol bomb being thrown through a window into a living room where 15 minutes previously, a ten—month—old baby was crawling around. as we returned to the town of newtonards last night, masked men holding bricks were guarding houses. violence from armed groups continues in republican communities, too. while filming, we hear about a victim being taken to hospital not far away in west belfast. police received a report of a man being shot in both legs in this street here, a so—called paramilitary style attack, the kind of which still happens pretty regularly. northern ireland is about to mark 25 years since the historic peace deal, the good friday agreement, largely ended the conflict. but paramilitary groups
9:22 pm
continue to exercise control over some communities. the issue with the loyalist paramilitaries is they continue to recruit young people into their ranks. that is why, 25 years on, in what should be a peaceful society, we still have incidents happen such as what is going on in north down. they are being groomed and sucked into these paramilitary crime gangs and then they are used as foot soldiers. when something like this happens and the leadership of these organisations clash with each other, they are dragged into these violent disputes. police have made ten arrests in relation to the recent attacks, and while the violence sparked by this turf war remains on a much lower level than the feuds of the past, in this significant year for northern ireland, there is a renewed desire to find better ways to weaken the groups behind it. emma vardy, bbc news. some tech news now, as italy has become the first western country to block the advanced chatbot chatgpt. the italian data—protection authority said there were privacy

concerns relating to the model, which was created by us start—up 0penai and is backed by microsoft. the regulator said it would ban and investigate 0penai *with immediate effect'. millions of people have used chatgpt since it launched in november 2022 , as it can answer questions using natural human—like language. the technology journalist, will guyatt, explained the implications of the ban. it's come from absolutely nowhere. there has been some concerns about privacy on the platform but we have not had any government suggesting they were going to do anything close to this. the regulator in italy has come out with a statement saying this is a temporary measure until chatgpt respects privacy, quite a strong statement that they have suggested there. this is interesting because we don't know how many users there were for chatgpt in italy. there are 100 million people who have been using chatgpt in the last several months. it has only been around since november. but the interesting thing from this

is that it all goes back to the italian regulator suggesting that algorithms that are made to train... so what happens in these artificial intelligence systems is that they are being trained by all the information you put into it, it is "learning" from what you put into it, and they are suggesting there is currently no legal precedent in italian or eu law that enables this to happen. if that is the case, i am pretty confident there is no law in any country in europe, because we are very slow at adapting to technology and rules when they come through. you could find theoretically a load of different countries following italy and maybe the whole of the eu following with this ban until you get into a situation where 0penai and their big funder, now microsoft, get this together and have the conversations that are required. it is a surprise to me as somebody that has followed the tech industry for 20 years that this has happened so very quickly. well, everything happens quickly with chatgpt, it seems. will, i have got about a minute

or so but i know the uk wants to be a leader when it came to ai. what do you think this italian ruling might mean? obviously, the uk is not in the eu any more. this will be really interesting as to whether the uk reacts to this any way. we have seen tiktok being banned on government devices, following concerns in other countries. but i know that the uk government are very keen to position themselves at the front of ai and ai development and the idea that a country can ban a piece of ai technology on the basis of privacy seems to set the argument for al in that country back by a certain period of time. let's see what happens in the next few days and weeks. i really don't know where this one is going next. you can find out more about the story and others we have covered on the bbc website and news app. thanks for watching. that's it for me. you can reach me on instagram and

twitter. i love to hear from you. thank you for tuning in and stay with bbc news if you can. hello, the last day of march was unsettled across the southern half of the uk. plenty of showers and areas of heavy rain and strong winds, but this area of low pressure will clear away during the first part of the weekend, and into the start of april, things become a bit drier and brighter and more settled and we should start to see more sunshine on sunday. this area of low pressure has been pulling away into the near continent, taking strong wind with it but leaving a legacy of cloud. further showers and a weather front bringing further rain to northern ireland, parts of wales, southwest and southern england, some of the rain heavy at times. further north, a lot of cloud across north sea coasts but western scotland and north—west england seeing the best of any clearer skies are so temperatures may take a bit of a tumble. for saturday, still an area of low pressure pulling away very slowly

to the near continent, leaving a legacy of cloud across the country. a few showery bursts of rain being pushed in on an east north—easterly wind and eastern scotland and eastern england staying grey and cool. this weather front bringing further rain to northern ireland, parts of wales and the southwest will tend to fizzle out through the day. we could see skies brightening a touch but it will be chilly, certainly compared to the last few days across north sea coast, with an onshore breeze. further west, highs of 11, maybe 12 or 13 in the sunny spells across the south—west. as we head through saturday night, it stays rather cloudy for most. this weather front should peter out and turn drier across northern ireland, south—west england and i think any rain across eastern england will fizzle out. many places dry with variable cloud and clear spells and temperatures dipping between 2—7. a cooler night to come, then. sunday, high pressure builds in, few isobars so the wind will be much lighter. we are importing some slightly drier air from the east so i think early
