7:31 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. their best ever performance — according to pep guardiola. his manchester city side win 4—1 against rivals liverpool. whatever city do, arsenal seem equal to, with striker gabrieljesus back among the scorers against leeds. it's heartbreak for harlequins as they leave their comeback too late against stormers in rugby union's champions cup. also coming up on sportsday... after a difficult start to the formula one season, british drivers george russell and lewis hamilton are on the up down under. and it's all on the line for anthonyjoshua — win or bust for him againstjermaine franklin at the 02 tonight.
7:32 pm
welcome to the programme. a massive day in the premier league today, with manchester city not giving up on their title ambitionsjust yet. they beat rivals liverpool 4—1. they continue their abysmal away form and have a challenging run in to secure a champions league place. ben croucher reports. whatever the allegiance, wherever the title may end up, after the international pause, the premier league returned with a treat, manchester city and liverpool in modern times has become a title decider. whilst liverpool may not be in this year's race, they could have a big say still. as is often the case at this time of the season, though, city pulled it back. julian alvarez on target, no haaland, no problem. liverpool's top scorer may have been absent, but you would not have known it.
7:33 pm
this was a city performance in harmony, in complete control. jack grealish rounded off a flowing team move, and took their unbeaten run to 11 matches, hitting form atjust the right time. the race is still on, although liverpool are a long way off it. ben croucher, bbc news. so a huge win for city, then, against a team they're used to competing with at the top — but haven't reached the usual heights this season. the loss for liverpool leaves them 7 points off the champions league positions. manchester city boss pep guardiola called it his team's best ever display, in his seven years in charge. at the end, it was almost a perfect performance. 0—1 down, we were playing good, and jack made a good save for the potential of two. in general the way we played in the way we found our spaces in the way we defend, the intensity, high pressing. we stick to the plan, and they were good, always.
7:34 pm
we had moments, always, but in general, how we lose, 3—1 down is a difficult place to be, and they are playing well, but there was nothing any more there. four players played an ok game, and all the rest were somewhere, and we cannot do that, we have to change that. well, in the aftermath of that win, manchester city have said they strongly condemn the actions of those who damaged the liverpool team coach on it's journey back from the etihad. an object was said to have been thrown towards the coach in a residential area. city and liverpool will support greater manchester police's investigation. so city cut the gap just for the time being, then, after leaders arsenal returned in style to the emirates to blow away leeds united 4 goals to 1 this afternoon and an afternoon to remember for gabrieljesus. the former man city player scored his first goals since october last year,
7:35 pm
with two of their goals today, the first a penalty to the gunners up at half time. they took control after the break with goals from ben white and jesus with his second. granit xhaka made it four after leeds — nowjust a point above the relegation zone — pulled one back. the bbc*sjonathan pearce spoke to the managers afterwards. it has been a concerning few days, because some of the players were unavailable, we couldn't decide until this morning the line—up, and it is always having the right state of mind after an international break to come back to the premier league, and i'm really happy with the performance. that is 100 victories as arsenal manager in all competitions. thank you very much, it is a beautiful number and let's go for the next one. i think we competed well from the beginning. after we conceded the goal, we were in the game with some chances, defending well. the penalty changed the game a little bit, and in the second half we conceded that early goal, everything changed and it was tough
7:36 pm
for us to manage the second half. aston villa have leapfrogged chelsea in the table after winning 2—0 at stamford bridge in the day's evening game. ollie watkins opened the scoring with less than 20 minutes gone with his tenth league goal of the season. whilejohn mcginn secured villas fifth win on the road since unai emery took over in october. they're now up to ninth, with chelsea slipping to eleventh, piling yet more pressure on boss graham potter. roy hodgson made a winning return to the dugout in his second stint in charge of crystal palace and what late drama there was at selhurst park too. jean—phillipe mateta's stoppage time winner proved the difference against leicester — who'd taken the lead against the run of play, thanks to ricardo pereira. an own goal, then mateta's 94th minute strike saved the day for hodgson and palace — who now sit five points
7:37 pm
clear of the drop zone. leicester now though in the bottom three. that was a fantastic way to win again, and i'm notjust talking about the fact that it was a last—minute goal. i think the way that the team played throughout the minutes was praiseworthy. a lot of credit, and i think the scoreline doesn't flatter us. palace obviously take the three points, but right up until that moment, it is football. you've got to concentrate right the way through the game, got to be strong and be resolute, and if you can't win the game, then don't lose it. that last 30 seconds, we've just got to defend better and do the basics well, and if you do that, you get the result. bournemouth are out of drop zone after they came from behind to beat fulham — their european charge seems to be losing some steam. the visitors took the lead, thanks to an early goal from andreas pereira. bournemouth turned things around in the second half —
7:38 pm
marcus tavernier and dominic solanke gave them the vital three points at the vitality. it was just bournemouth*s third win since november. we had a tough start, and hugo 1—0 down at home in a big game, it is a real test of character and belief, and the lads showed everything that you need to to give yourself a chance in a relegation scrap, and they were incredible from that moment where we managed to wrestle back some control, should probably have scored one in the first half, had some good chances, but made a couple of changes at half—time and went on to win the game, deservedly so. brighton and brentford are both above liverpool in the league after a thirilling 3—3 encounter. alexis mac allister scored a last—minute penalty as brighton fought back three times at the amex stadium. i think now we are in a position that we have one more, as a club team, it is frustrating not to win, but at the same time,
7:39 pm
when you cannot win, it's nice not to lose. so we have one point, which is not enough, as i said, but we have a lot of games to go. daniel podence*s first goal since mid january saw wolves come from behind to draw one all at nottingham forest. a point a piece means they stay 13th and 14th respectively. forest are just two points clear of the relegation zone. so confirmation, then, of arsenal's lead at the top — back to eight points, after that comfortable win over leeds. that entertaining match between brighton and brentford, leaves them both still very much in the hunt for european places still. as fulham lose ground, following their result at bournemouth. and it's so tight at the bottom — just five points between leicester, who fall into the drop zone — palace in 12th. that win for them, giving a valuable cushion. vital points for bournemouth, too — they're in the mix
7:40 pm
with forest and wolves. the two bottom sides — 19th placed west ham and southampton — are in action tomorrow with everton playing spurs on monday. the race for promotion to the top flight is hotting up in the championship. luton town won their hertfordshire derby against watford 2—0 to strengthen their grip on a play—off place. the kenilworth road side are still in touch with what would be a remarkable finish in the automatic promotion spots. meanwhile, mick mccarthy's blackpool were beaten 3—1 by neighbours preston in the lancashire derby at deepdale. blackpool stay in the relegation zone with that result, and are running out of games to prevent a return to the third tier. and in the other games, sheffield united keep their momentum up beating play—off chasing norwich. particularly as third placed middlesbrough lost 4—2 to strugglers huddersfield. elsewhere, a big win for bottom side wigan against qpr. and swansea scored in the ninth minute of stoppage time, to win 3—2 at rivals cardiff.
7:41 pm
those results mean sheffield united have really strengthened their grip on the second automatic promotion place. burnley drew 0—0 with sunderland last night. blackburn's defeat at birmingham means their play—off place is still at risk, but they are still in sixth, with norwich, coventry and west brom trying to catch them. and huddersfield's win coupled with that defeat for cardiff in the south wales derby means neil warnock*s side have given themselves a real chance of surviving. wigan*s win against qpr also keeps them in with a chance despite that points deduction keeping them bottom. motherwell continued their resurgence under manager stuart kettlewell as they convincingly beat hibs 3—1 away from home in the scottish premiership. sean goss* stunning free—kick afterjust seven minutes gave them the perfect start and then kevin van veen secured the win with another free kick. it's their fourth win in six games under kettlewell. malik tillman showed why rangers are desperate to keep him beyond the summer as the on—loan midfielder scored twice in a 2—0 win against dundee united. kilmarnock held on with ten men for the final half hour to beat hearts 2—1 and move six points clear of the bottom of the table.
7:42 pm
aberdeen are just one point from third after a 1—0 victory against stjohnstone. and st mirren won 3—0 against livingston. manchester united have gone three points clear at the top of the women's super league after beating brighton this lunchtime. leah galton headed the visitors in front early on before adding a second midway through the second half. substitutes rachel williams and lucia garcia scored late on to make it 4—0. the victory sees united go ahead of manchester city having played one game more with city playing arsenal tomorrow. brighton are nowjust two points above the relegation zone. we'll have all the latest from the women's six nations... where france play an hour with m players against ireland . but still come out on top.
7:43 pm
and a bulked—up anthonyjoshua is just hours away from one of the biggest fights of his career to date in london againstjermaine franklin. to rugby union now — and the last—16 matches of the champions cup continue this weekend. premiership side harlequins left it late against stormers in south africa, but their late tries weren't enough as they exit the competition. craig templeton reports. in the shadow of table mountain, knockout champions cup rugby comes to cape town for the first time. and for harlequins, it was looking a tall order inside the first minute. that's 36—year—old front row dionne fury, and he has no right to be that quick. but one try isn't insurmountable, and if the opener was about pace, then quins response was about power. england's alex dombrandt putting a difficult six nations behind him. the side would soon be behind again, the stormers captain stephen kitsch of giving the south african is a five—point lead. then they took complete control.
7:44 pm
a tournament harlequins are saying goodbye to, they managed to run in late tries but it was too much of a mountain to climb. gloucester pushed defending champions la rochelle all the way but they eventually succumbed to a teddy thomas try in the last few minutes to lose 29—26. ulster are out at the last 16 stage for the second year in a row as leinster ran out comfortable winners in dublin. jamison gibson—park with one of their three tries in the 30—15 win. and earlier, the sharks were the first of the two south african sides through — they produced a dominant display to defeat munster 50—35 in the champions cup to book their quarterfinal place. they'll play exeter chiefs or montpellier in the next round.
7:45 pm
there was a dominant win for france over ireland in the women's six nations. despite having a player sent offjust 20 minutes in, the french ran in nine tries in cork. it finished 53—3 to the away side, who were looking to keep up their perfect record having narrowly beaten italy in their first match. it's ireland's second heaviest defeat in the championship. they also lost heavily last week to wales. and wales beat scotland in edinburgh 34—22. wales looking to keep up their 100% record after that win over ireland last week. they got the opening try in this match and did extend that lead, but scotland closed the gap back to two points at the break. wales though proving too much in the end for scotland. super league leaders warrington were ruthless in recording a seventh consecutive win as they crushed hull
7:46 pm
fc by 3a points to 6. matt dufty*s lung—bursting run in the 31st minute ended in the pick of the six tries for the wolves at the halliwelljones stadium. the victory saw warrington match their best start to a super league season. hull have now lost their past five games. in the day's other match catalans dragons beat castleford tigers 22—18. max verstappen bounced back from his disappointment last time out in saudi arabia, to claim pole for sunday's australian grand prix. but it was a day of mixed fortunes for his red bull team . and there was a surprise comeback for one of their rivals, as nick parrott reports. things can change quickly in the fast—moving world of formula i. a fortnight ago, sergio perez was on top of the world after winning the saudi arabian grand prix, but he was brought back down to earth down under. the mexican couldn't even set a time in qualifying in melbourne. it's really disappointing. but nothing i can do now. got to look forwards, and i really hope we are able to fix
7:47 pm
the technical issue for tomorrow, because otherwise it will be really hard to race like this. max verstappen*s biggest challenge was this one. the bird and the red bull both spared damage. the drivers behind were george russell and mercedes team—mate lewis hamilton claiming second and third on the grid. radio: not too shabby! the performance has been getting better and better, and i think it isjust a matter of the fact of the team doing a greatjob to maximise the setup, to maximise what we have got at hand, and to be lining up p2 and p3 is an exceptional result for us. i was hoping for better, i but it wasn't meant to be. but still, to be in the top three is absolutely fantastic, - and i hope that tomorrow i can do... i haven't done a long run on the tires yet, i so tomorrow will be the first.
7:48 pm
russell was almost a quarter of a second slower than the dutchman, but red bull have only won the grand prix once, and that was 12 years ago, said the mercedes pair will be hoping one of them can pull off a surprise tomorrow. moto gp*s second round of the season is under way in argentina. wet weather produced an incredible qualifying which set the grid for today's sprint race and tomorrow's grand prix. alex marquez, who's the younger brother of six time champion marc, had a day he'll never forget. he crashed towards the end of the first session of qualifying. then the spaniards ducati bike caught fire before he could get back to the pits. despite that, he was able to take part in the final session and went on to claim pole for the first time in his career. it was also a remarkable sprint race which was won by south africa's brad binder who'd started from 15th on the grid. marquez could only finish fifth.

with young people, they see us as just a uniform, a robot, if you will. so basketball, when i was younger, it wasn't as popular as it is now. so it's starting to get a lot more popular. and the kids love it. they really love it. most people usually associate police officers with like crime and everything. police aren't always bad. there are good people. when you see someone like kyp jump that high, it makes basketball look more entertaining. kyp, as everyone calls him, is a south london schools officer. this is the southbank university academy. we know that policing in london right now is under real scrutiny. we hear a lot about the urgent need to rebuild, build trust. building trust, essentially, that's what's happening on this court right here. when i would come into schools, kids would say, you know, you're not a police officer. or they would say to me, oh, you don't seem like a police officer. so i used to say, "well, how is this police officer meant to be?" and just having that rapport and building that trust with them
7:55 pm
that they were then able to come and talk to me, ask me questions, educate them about the law. one, two, three, hard work! kyp used to train with professionals, could have been one. he was recently a guest at the london lions of the british basketball league. nothing commands respect quite like a slam dunk. has he inspired you, all of you, to actually dunk? yes. yeah. have you tried it? yeah. because if kyp can dunk... we can dunk. he's one officer in one gym. but if pc kyp makes a difference, well, then he's made his point. joe wilson, bbc news, south london. very good indeed, isn't he? that's all from sportsday. we will see later on, take care.

hello there. the met office confirmed that last month of march was indeed a very wet month, pretty much across the country, but especially across england and wales. and we ended the month on a damp, windy, wet note with a deep area of low pressure which has been pulling away gradually. so the next few days, certainly for the first week of april, it's looking quieter as high pressure starts to build in to bring you some sunshine as well. but the legacy left behind by that area of low pressure means it will hold on to quite a lot of cloud. further spots of rain this evening across western scotland, northern ireland. but through the night it will turn dry for for many. we'll see the clouds tending to break up with clear spells developing where skies clear. it will turn quite chilly under the cloud with more of a breeze in the southeast as well. then no lower than five to seven degrees. you can see this area of high pressure starting to build in. across the uk. we lose the low pressure system which will pull away from the southeast, taking the fresh northeasterly

breeze with it through the day on sunday. so we'll see the clouds melting away across many areas. it could hold on, though, across central northern scotland, maybe the odd shower here. but most places will be dry, increasing sunshine, so feeling a bit warmer away from north sea coast, which will still feel quite chilly with an onshore breeze there. but the winds become even lighter across all areas through sunday night. and with clear skies, it's going to be a recipe for quite a cold night. by the end of the night, it will turn chilly enough for a touch of frost in places, some subzero values, particularly out of towns and cities. but it means as we head into monday, the start of the first working week of april, with high pressure overhead, it's going to be fine and dry. it's going to be a cold start, some frost around, early mist and fog, which will tend to lift and clear. and then most places will be dry with plenty of sunshine, including much of the north of scotland and also northern ireland winds coming in from the southeast. so again, cooler around some southern and eastern coast, but further west with the sunshine around after that cold start,
7:58 pm
it could be up to around 13 degrees. a bit of a blip in the weather around the middle part of the week. we see a high pressure retreat allowing these weather fronts to bring some wind, cloud and rain to northern and western areas for a time. but then it looks like high pressure wants to build back in towards the end of the week and indeed for the run up to the easter weekend. so all in all, i think for many, particularly southern and eastern areas, it should stay fine, dry, and settled.
