the former president with his legal team having added a prosecutor to his team making their final preparations. when were speaking with our correspondent a little while earlier he was telling us about some last—minute moves they were anticipating when proceedings get going with the defence team going to ask for the trial to move out of manhattan to staten island so interest in the tactics there in terms of a little more support for republicans in staten island. that was our correspondence assessment of that particular move. we have seen donald trump region against the attorney general and the judge was up attorney general and the judge was up in one tweet a few days ago donald trump said the judge hates me. it will be thatjudge who
5:03 pm
decides whether to move the trial and it looks unlikely as it stands but those are the pictures there in terms of trump tower. in terms of what we're likely to see — thejudge has ruled, that the media will be allowed to take still pictures in the courtroom — just before the hearing gets under way — but tv cameras will only be allowed, in the corridors outside. we will see if the former president walks past the cameras and says nothing which is not normally his style but we will wait to see if he addresses the cameras. many of his supporters are across the road. i can see pictures out of the corner of my eye with some of his supporters with flags and those people have been amassed outside, just across the way from the courthouse. and those crowds have been growing and that warning from

the mayor of new york telling anyone coming to new york to be very careful in terms of their behaviour. so, those are just some of the crowds across the way now. in the last little while emma. us representative george santos, who is a supporter of donald trump, has arrived in the courthouse in new york. he was asked by the reporters why he was there. let's have a look. hold on. are you guys going to... this isn't about me. you guys should focus on the story i not try to swamp me. you're trying to trample me. you said, "i'm here in support of the president." i'm here in support of the president. leave him alone. guys, is this how the media it behaves these days? we just want to hear from you george. 0k, you're hearing from me that you've not left me any space. yeah, you're fine, you can call me george but i'm not here for the cameras. i'm here to support the president of the united states who is being unfairly attacked by a da. why is it important for you to be here in person? because i felt like people needed
5:05 pm
to see that their representatives support the rule of law. that this da is... i'm talking to you because you talk to my people. because this da refuses to talk... to take criminals off the street but wants to stretch a misdemeanor into a felony. george! all right, that's enough. that's enough. come on guys. that's enough. that was george santos as he arrived in the court explaining why he was there an interest in what he said about the attorney general who has made it over recent days said it is clear no one in the american is about that office up in terms of why they're pressing ahead with the criminal charges against the former president. brendan gutenschwager is an independent reporter and videographer, he's been documenting the scene in new york.

to the life page and remind people that we are edging towards where we see the former president move from trump tower to the courthouse. as we scroll through the life page there are pictures from all the different camera locations dotted around new york. yesterday, we saw helicopters showing every inch of movement from the former president followed by the media. and when we get to the court proceedings themselves and we learned the indictment details, that would be a really significant moments as though charges become clear. the details of the charges. the indictment we know but the details surrounding the charges we don't. there are so many different aspects to this all charging on the life page to go through. do had there and it is constantly being updated.
5:10 pm
so little bit earlier — we were looking at the bbc searches — so many of them around the terminolgy being used. we know today — there are not going to be cameras inside the courtroom during the hearing — in objecting to that idea — trump's legal team talked about wanting to avoid a *circus.’ but — there's no avoiding that when you look at the hoopla surrounding everything involved with this. nicky schiller is in the newsroom with more on all of that. so, yes, as you say, the one thing we do know is that there will not be any tv cameras inside the courthouse today. the judge ruled against an appeal by some of the us tv networks. however, he did say he would allow five stills photographers into the courthouse to take some pictures before the hearing starts. none of the journalists will be allowed to use any of their electronic devices. so no tv cameras inside, it's a different picture outside. just take a look at this picture from outside trump tower. hundreds and hundreds of the world's media camped out there ready to try
5:11 pm
and get a picture of donald trump. and as new yorkers woke up and picked up their papers this morning, this is the headline that was on the daily news. historic surrender. trump arrives in city ahead of arraignment. meanwhile online, the new york post goes with day of the don. a play on donald trump, of course, and across the us tv networks this morning there was just one story in town. former president trump prepares to turn himself in to face criminal charges in new york. why his rhetoric has the city on alert. people are sick and tired of this nonsense every single day. - we're wondering what captain chaos is going to do today. _ right now on morning news now, unprecedented. an historic day unfolding in america this morning. former president donald trump is in new york city, set to face a judge over dozens of criminal charges and an alleged hush money scheme. today, it all happens. today is the day. it's the day. good morning, everyone. 7am here on the east coast.

we're glad you're with us. the sun is up behindl caitlin outside of 100 centre street st caitlin, which is the manhattan| criminal courthouse, _ which is where the world's attention will be on the former president today. - so, yes, the manhattan criminal courthouse, the focus of the attention. where is it in new york? well, here is the courthouse itself. if i zoom out, it'll give you an idea in relation to the rest of the city where the world's media are right now. so what can we expect inside later? well, we don't think the hearing will last that long. it'll be our first chance to hear the charges that mr trump faces. some of the us networks think there could be as many as 30. mr trump himself is expected to plead not guilty and then we believe he will be given bail. he is due to fly back to florida, where we expect him to address supporters at his mar a lago resort. that, of course, will be carried live on the news networks. that is ours i had what will happen
5:13 pm
at mar a lago. that is ours i had what will happen at mara lago. so that is ours i had what will happen at mar a lago. so much drama and detail and pictures on what is going to happen in the courthouse. that is all to come to stop i want to take you back to the pictures we were showing a little while ago and that just across from the courthouse. what our previous guess was just describing to us, they see pro trump supporters and anti—trump protesters eye to eye but being kept apart by those barriers as you can see. and a significant number of police there as well stop the scenes as brendan was saying. they are keeping a close eye on what is happening in the courthouse and expecting the numbers to grow in a minutes before the president actually arrives. let's get the latest from our correspondent nada tawfik who is live from outside the court in manhattan where donald trump is due to appear later today. just give us a sense of things in

on edge trying to make everything as orderly as possible. the images we saw of protesters in front of the courthouse are symbolic of the state of our nation. the two sides separated by barriers and yelling at each other and shouting their positions. that says something about the state of the country at the moment and no doubt when donald trump arrives here those images would only be more polarising for people. would only be more polarising for --eole. ., * would only be more polarising for --eole. .,* , people. you're absolutely right. it represents — people. you're absolutely right. it represents a _ people. you're absolutely right. it represents a snapshot _ people. you're absolutely right. it represents a snapshot of - people. you're absolutely right. it represents a snapshot of america | people. you're absolutely right. it l represents a snapshot of america in 2023. when i was talking to gary a little while earlier he was talking about potential last—minute manoeuvres by the defence team, even in a request to move the trial out of manhattan. is that likely? and in terms of thejudge of manhattan. is that likely? and in terms of the judge who donald trump has railed against saying that he hates him, that must be unlikely in terms of thejudge hates him, that must be unlikely in terms of the judge granting a

have that coming into us all of the time and as soon there is further movement or detailed we will return their life to new york. around the world and across the uk. this is bbc news. it's become a familiar sight as vaping has grown hugely in recent years, and the latest national figures are worrying communities and schools everywhere. with 9% of 11 to 15 year olds currently using e—cigarettes, an increase from 6% in 2018. for the past few months, an educational pilot scheme has been underway in lisca rd. i knew it had nicotine in it. ijust didn't realise how dangerous nicotine in itself was. you can get really addicted to it and then people think it's going to help you with your stress, but actually it makes you more stressful. the clear messaging needs to go out . that vaping is a really useful tool. for adults to use to quit smoking. however, it's not ok- for young people to vape. critics say children are being drawn

president putin wanted to slam a door shut. today we show the world he failed. that aggression and intimidation don't work. instead of less neato, he has achieved the opposite. more neato. rasmus hindren — head of international relations — from the european centre of excellence for countering hybrid threats — gave his analysis on how this affects finland's security. it's basically a win—win proposition. for finland a lot changes but a lot stays the same as well. finland has always invested a lot in defence. it has a good military capability, but also a general sense among the population about the need to defend the country, if it comes to that. so for nato, it's also a big thing. because nato gets a new ally that has good capabilities, but it also has a good democratic credentials and it's
5:22 pm
a stable country. so that's how it's a win—win. we heard jens stoltenberg talking about sweden earlier and he hoped sweden's entry would happen swiftly. that's what begins stoltenberg was seen earlier. with more on this lets speak to the bbc europe regional editor, paul moss. paul, sophia and then in an sweden we are waiting for. what is holding up that decision?— we are waiting for. what is holding up that decision? finland and sweden had a similar— up that decision? finland and sweden had a similar situation. _ up that decision? finland and sweden had a similar situation. both - had a similar situation. both traditionally neutral companies —— or countries. spooked by the war in ukraine and deciding they were

better off with the alliance. for finland this was no problem. the problem for sweden, to join finland this was no problem. the problem for sweden, tojoin nato, all of the countries have to agree and at the moment turkey is vetoing sweden's inclusion. it has to do mainly with the kurds. sweden has hosted many kurdish refugees and turkey said amongst them are people they consider to be terrorists. sweden promised a crackdown on some of this and there were ongoing negotiations with sweden with them saying that it did enough and turkey same nuts. there was a public burning of the koran which caused outrage across the muslim world but particularly in turkey, which said
5:24 pm
if this a country that i love the koran to be burned we will or are not interested in it and having it joined the alliance.— not interested in it and having it joined the alliance. there was also some process _ joined the alliance. there was also some process in _ joined the alliance. there was also some process in the _ joined the alliance. there was also some process in the swedish - joined the alliance. there was also l some process in the swedish courts today. how does that play into this? what happened was the police in sweden had so far banned the burning of the koran publicly on public order but the swedish court today ruled this was in breach of sweden's principles of free speech and that koran burning should be allowed. not encouraged of course but nothing you can do legally to stop it. that further puts a halt on the potential for student to enter the nato because of turkeys interest in this. there's also been a number of arrests in what you just described.
5:25 pm
when there were burnings of karen sue there were unrest in turkey. swedish police arrested a number of people in response to these and there are several cases they were pursuing. we see these intertwining stories with different ramifications i'm in the immediate circumstances they are happening.— they are happening. thank you for takin: us they are happening. thank you for taking us through _ they are happening. thank you for taking us through that _ they are happening. thank you for taking us through that problem. i taking us through that problem. that's his head back to new york and have a look at the roots the former president donald trump will take. donald trump will make his trip from midtown and manhattan into new york. let me take you from that an admission to the live pictures to the park across from the courthouse.
5:26 pm
the courthouse on the left. you would recognise the footage we've been looking at. the president do there in the next little while to face criminal charges some more on all of that here in a moment or two. hello. many of us enjoyed a beautiful day today, but clouds are on the increase for tomorrow. rather cloudy across the majority of the uk and outbreaks of rain are possible from time to time. now through this evening, the skies will remain clear, though, across many eastern and south—eastern areas of the country, but out towards the west, you can see that advancing weather system that will bring rain through the mid evening to many north—western parts of the country. and you can see that weather front, in fact, multiple weather fronts sweeping into the north—west. the breeze is going to increase as well. and overall tonight, it's not going to be quite as cold as last night. last night in 0xfordshire, it was nearly minus six degrees celsius. tonight, where the skies remain clear and it stays generally dry across eastern areas, temperatures will be a degree
5:27 pm
or two above freezing, but in some spots freezing or below. for example, in the south—east, norfolk, suffolk, essex, but out towards the west it's going to be much milder. so those weather systems that are relatively slow moving, they are right over us, particularly across western and north—western areas on wednesday. so thick cloud from morning onwards, you can see where the outbreaks of rain are. the rain is moving northwards, but also very slowly towards the east. so we don't think the rain is going to reach extreme eastern parts of the country through the day, maybe later in the afternoon, into the evening hours in norwich. but elsewhere it's going to be fairly cloudy and where the cloud and rain persists through the day, it could be barely nine degrees celsius, so a little on the chilly side. now early in the morning on thursday, that weather front sweeps away towards the east. behind it, the winds change direction more and more of a north—westerly and also scattered showers. so sunny spells and occasional showers expected on thursday. and this temperature is just a shade lower,
5:28 pm
maybe between eight and 12 or 13 degrees celsius. and then friday, the weekend and into next week, we are going to see another change in the wind direction, this time coming in from the south—west, warmer air from the azores and that does mean that the temperatures should rise right across the country. nothing especially warm, but milder up to around about 13 to 16 degrees celsius. there is a hint, though, just a hint, that next week those temperatures could be a few degrees higher than that. but for now, we'll have to make do with this. bye bye.
