hello, i'm paul scott at the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme: a masterclass in manchester as city thrash bayern munich to take control of their champions league quarterfinal. benfica get the blues as inter milan take control of their tie, winning 2—0 in portugal and not quite convincing on the clay — novak djokovic begins his monte carlo masters campaign with a win, but calls his victory ugly. hello and welcome along to the programme. lots to get through. we will start with football and what was a big night in the champions league.
1:46 am
there was a clash of champions at the etihad stadium as english premier league winners manchester city took on german champions bayern munich while benfica hosted inter milan in the first leg of their quarterfinal. now to bring us up to date with a busy night of action, our reporterjoe linskey has joined us and is with us now. joe, really good to see you. let's start by talking about that game in england, then manchester city. they looked very impressive, didn't they, against bayern munich? paul, this has been one of the great european nights really for manchester city in the champions league, 3—0 winners against the german champions bayern munich at the etihad stadium. city's manager pep guardiola recognising this as a real statement scoreline from his team, but also saying they'll need to be wary of defending that lead properly when they meet again in that second leg next wednesday in bavaria. the spanish midfielder, rodri, he opened the scoring for city with a brilliant curling effort on the edge of the box. his first goal in the champions league.
1:47 am
there were then big chances at both ends, but in the second half, city turned what was a slender advantage into a potentially tie winning scoreline. bernardo silva heading in the second from close range bayern losing possession cheaply in the build up to that, really, which was something they were guilty of on many occasions in this match. and then they then gave too much space to erling haaland for city's third, 3—0 made this a really fantastic night for city and haaland, that is remarkably his 45th goal in all competitions this season. no premier league player has ever done that. so wonderful night for him. he of course has come to manchester city to try and elevate them to the next level in this competition, in particular to try and help them win it for the first time. and this certainly was a night and a victory that his team will remember this evening. the scoreline looked comfortable, but for manchester city's manager, he didn't always feel that way.
1:48 am
he's not comfortable at all. emotionally, i'm destroyed. i have 10 more years today. it was so demanding game. so i know exactly what you have to do that if you don't perform really well, they are able to score one, two or three. i know that, the players know it. so it's an incredible result. this does not feel like a three zero, but it is a three zero. i and of course, it's - a huge, huge task now to turn this around. but yeah, we will not give up. we are realistic, but we will not give up. i and football is football- and home match in germany is a home match in germany. and like they say, - we will...it will not be over until we are in the shower. sojoe, advantage manchester city then in that tie and inter milan have a pretty comfortable cushion as well in the night's other match? yeah, inter coming away from lisbon in a match with benfica with an equally decisive

lead you would think in this quarterfinal tie, 2—0 to the serie a side. they* re currently fifth in serie a. inter actually playing a team who lead the way in the portuguese league but inter made the break they needed just after half time with niccolo nicolo barella heading in. romelu lukaku then scored from the penalty spot. that spot kick somewhat controversially awarded for handball after a var check and with that score inter like city, will now feel they have one foot in the semi—finals of this competition. they've not got that far, actually, since 2010 when they won the champions league, managed, of course, then byjose mourinho. and they may feel on this side of the draw that they have a chance. it may open up for them now because tomorrow on wednesday we're going to see the next of these quarterfinals which sees ac milan take on napoli. the winner of that will face the winner of that tie between benfica and inter in the semifinals. the other first leg tomorrow on wednesday is chelsea, managed by frank lampard, his return to the champions league against the reigning champions real madrid

at the bernabeu. yeah, should be fascinating. joe, thank you very much. joe lynskey there. now, on the international stage, the countdown to the women's world cup is on with the tournament getting under way in 100 days. european champions england are one of the favourites to win it, but they will need to improve on what they produced against australia on tuesday. as the world cup co—host won 2—0 in london, ending england's 30 match unbeaten run. our women's sport reporter jo curry was watching at the community stadium. this is a momentous win for australia, who in extremely wet conditions look the more alert and more physical from the very beginning. they took the lead just after the half hour mark, an error from the england captain, leah williamson, who under pressure from sam kerr, tried to head the ball back to her keeper but not putting up on it. kerr was able to nip in and chip it over the head of mary earps and into the net.
1:51 am
england, who were on a 30 match unbeaten run coming into this game, came out fighting in the second half but really struggled to produce any shots of note before australia scored their second. a header from charlotte grant. taking a big deflection off williamson left earps with no chance in goal. 2—0 the final score. australia, who were without a number of key injured players, will now hope to build on this win as they head into their home world cup this summer. for the european champions, this will be a big wake up call. so a disappointing night for england but midfielder keira walsh insists the defeat is a wake—up call for the lionesses. it's a tough lesson for us, but i think equally an important one going into the world cup. you know, i think it shows us where we need to improve. and yeah, i mean, it's been a long run without a loss. and, you know, we'd rather it happen now than at the world cup. so yeah, although it's disappointing, i think we've still got a lot of work to do before the summer. so england's remarkable run is over. whilst it's a huge confidence boost for australia, but they weren't the only teams in action with a number of other friendlies taking

place as sides continue their build up to the world cup. brazil bounced back from their penalty defeat in final isma to beat germany two one whilst wales got a creditable one one draw in portugal. scotland, who beat australia last week, eased past costa rica, while france's new coach made it two wins from two as they beat canada. all of the scores from tuesday's matches can, of course, be found on the bbc sport website. now to the tennis in monte carlo where novak djokovic has begun his clay court season with victory but says he played ugly. he's through to the third round after beating ivan gakhov in straight sets. the russian took djokovic all the way to a tie—break in the opening set, before the world number one prevailed in the second 6—2 to reach the last 16. it was probably a, if you can call it this way, an ugly

tennis win for me today. i haven't played really my best, particularly in the first set, and i kind of expected that that's going to happen in a way with swirly conditions. a lot of wind today changing directions. and, you know, it's different practising and then playing an official match on clay that, you know, i guess no. two bounces are the same. —— no two bounces are the same. meanwhile, there was a bit of a scare for alexander zverev. the german lost the opening set to kazakhstan*s alexander bublik, but recovered to win in three. andrei rublev, hubert hurkacz and stefanos tsitsipas all also progressed. meanwhile, there was another thrilling climax in the indian premier league. mumbai indians won their first game in the competition, but it came down to the very last ball against delhi capitals. australia batter david warner got delhi off to a good start. he scored a half century, another 50 from axar patel helped them to 172 all out. india captain rohit sharma struck an impressive 65 to set up a close finish.
1:54 am
tim david scampered through for two from the last delivery for victory. delhi still haven't won an ipl game this season. well, such is the success of the ipl that more and more countries are now trying to follow suit to create franchise cricket. and next up is america. major league cricket starts injuly. and after the draught at houston's space centre, the six teams have their star players. england odi world cup winner liam plunkett is one of them and he explained how the competition might be tailored for a modern american audience. when it comes to the core of it, it is cricket and you want to keep that. but i think the twist on it here is to try and promote a bit like the americans do with nfl and the baseball and basketball, make it really appealing for people who've not seen cricket before. i'm just trying to show people what it's like to play a professional cricket and what you do to get there.
1:55 am
i work with the kids as well, so just sort of show the pathways that we can sort of create to becoming from a 5—year—old who loves cricket in america. now there's a pathway all the way through to play major league and hopefully onto usa cricket. and it's the first time in history where you've got a full professional pipeline that'll take you from kindergarten over here all the way through to playing for a national team through a good setup. ijust normally say it's like baseball, but better. that's simple as that. cricket was here first and baseball came along and took them supporters and fans. and hopefully it's up to us to take take them back now. now there's been an emotional victory for australian surfer ethan earing as he took the rip curl pro men's title at bells beach. a0 years after his late mother, helen, won the women's trophy. ewing beat brazilian three time wcl champion gabriel medina in the last 16 before dominating in the all—australian final against ryan callinan to take his second wsl title. his mother won the title in 1983 atjust 18 years old. she died of breast

cancer in 2005, aged 39, when ethan was aged just six. you can, of course, get details on all of those stories and more on our website. but for myself and the rest of the team, thanks for watching. we'll see you next time. hello there. stormy weather is expected to continue through tonight and into wednesday. and that's because we've got this powerfuljet stream up above that weather system, developing it very rapidly in the past 2a hours, giving those severe gales, unusually windy weather, a lot of rain to go with it. it means the conditions on the roads have been pretty atrocious. and now, we've got cold air tucking in around that low pressure across scotland, so turning progressively to snow, several centimetres over the hills here and even the showers further south following the rain band could be a little bit wintry.
1:57 am
it's certainly going to be a chilly end to the night under the clearer skies further south, within a degree or two of freezing. but really, that's not the story. the story is these powerful winds once again battering many western and southern areas during the day. we're expecting gusts up to, if not above, 70 miles an hour, which will cause disruption. bring down the odd tree. 50 miles an hour inland is really quite unusual. and, given that it's already been very windy through tuesday, we're going to see some very large waves around the south—west approaches through the channel into the english channel as well. and that could overtop the coastlines as well. so, some dangerous conditions. it also looks on that north—westerly to be a very windy end to the morning, start to the afternoon across northern ireland. and we will keep very strong winds around that band of rain across the northern isles. so nowhere really exempt. and there'll be a lot of showers after the bright start. those showers rattling in really quite cloudy and wet for much of the day, potentially northern ireland,
1:58 am
northern and western scotland. still that snow risk on the hills, perhaps as high as 12 in the south. but really we will notice a coolerfeel, those showers rushing in, becoming frequent with hail and with thunder and still around into thursday, but fewer in number potentially. that low pressure with us in the north sea. it stays put actually through thursday into friday. but you can already see friday's rain is due in some uncertainty on that. but temperatures might recover just a little bit more on thursday, given a bit more sunshine. but it might be then that as we go into friday, we get the next area of low pressure pushing more rain in with some fairly strong winds. it doesn't look as windy as the current stormy conditions. and perhaps starting to settle down as we get into the latter part of the weekend. and next week, there's the hint that we might see the first 20, 21 of the year. but between now and then, a lot of nasty weather to come.
