hello, i'm tulsen tollett and welcome to the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme: holders real madrid have one foot in the champions league semifinals while ac milan hold off napoli in an all—italian affair. the uk and the republic of ireland submit theirjoint bid to host euro 2028, but two of the proposed stadiums aren't even built yet. and a first—ever women's team gold at the european championships for great britain.
12:46 am
hello and thanks forjoining us, where it was a night for the holders real madrid as they sent chelsea to yet another defeat in the opening leg of their uefa champions league quarterfinal, in a season that seems to lurch from one problem to the next for the londoners. the 14—time winners from spain claiming a 2—0 victory over caretaker manager frank lampard's side, while in an all—italian clash, ac milan held off napoli at the san siro despite the visitors having a host of chances. joining me to chat through the two matches is our football reporterjoe lynskey. and, joe, carlo ancelotti's side may be struggling domestically, but in europe, theyjust seem to manage to grind out those results, don't they? yeah, they do, tulsen. it's been a mixed season for real madrid, as you alluded to there. it's been a chaotic season for the premier league side chelsea. this competition, the champions league, really represents their last opportunity to win a trophy this season, and they were watched at the bernabeu by their american owner, todd boehly.
12:47 am
he watched his the team lose 2—0 to real madrid in a match that was being overseen by the third manager they've appointed this season in frank lampard, making his comeback to champions league management. real got their goals through karim benzema and marco asensio in the second half, but in between those goals, chelsea actually had ben chilwell the full—back sent off. there were 32 minutes left at that point. so actually, given they played that amount of time with ten men, chelsea may not be too disappointed, actually, tulsen, to only lose 2—0. they've got six days now before this tie goes back to stamford bridge, where chelsea and their supporters will know that's a very different match with the noise they can create there. and frank lampard said afterwards that special things can happen at the bridge. it's a big ask, though, for chelsea to overturn a two—goal deficit to the most successful team in champions league history in real madrid. and their coach, carlo ancelotti, is already planning ahead to that game.
12:48 am
we are satisfied for the result, for the performance. but we are... but it is not over yet. we have to fight, to sacrifice other 90 minutes at stamford bridge, and we have to be ready for this. we know really well that chelsea will try to put everything next week. now, he knows a little bit about napoli, carlo ancelotti. they were up against ac milan. and milan appear to have napoli's number despite, domestically, napoli being so far ahead. why is that? i wish i could tell the answer, tulsen but i mean it shows you just, i think the revival of italian football in general this season, certainly in european competitions, because we've got an all—italian quarterfinal here and the possibility, actually, of one of these teams also going on to face another italian side, inter milan, in the semifinals. inter with the advantage over benfica in that quarterfinal that happened on tuesday evening.
12:49 am
but it is ac milan who have the advantage over napoli. napoli, as you say, far clear at the top of serie a and on course to win the domestic championship, but ac milan have had their number in recent weeks, and they won this game 1—0 here thanks to a single goal from ismael bennacer, a result that follows up, as you say, a 4—0 win for milan they had in naples in serie a ten days ago. but napoli, like chelsea, they also had a man sent off in the second half. they had a number of chances themselves too, but they may... considering they played with ten men, they may see i—o as a deficit that actually wasn't too much of a bad result. they've got to go back to napoli, a place which is full of fervour at the moment for their football team at the moment in that city, and they will hope to lift them to a great european turnaround in the reverse fixture on tuesday. well, joe lynskey, certainly looking forward to the return fixtures, but thanks very much for now. the uk and republic of ireland have confirmed a joint

bid to host euro 2028. ten grounds are included in the bid with belfast*s casement park and everton*s bramley—moore dock, two unbuilt stadiums, selected to host matches. the bid has been backed by all five football associations, with turkey the other candidate to host the tournament. as we mentioned, turkey have submitted a bid to host the european championship for the sixth consecutive time. koray palaz — manager of turkish second tier side afyonspor — is confident their bid will be successful this time around. i think it's fair to understand that turkey as a nation is ready for such a big tournament, because if you look at the previous applications, if you look at the previous bids, rather, you will see that the infrastructure, the stadiums, the transportation, the accommodation, etc, etc, was not ready. however, i have been living in turkey for the last 12, 13 years myself and i've seen how much it developed
12:51 am
as a football nation in terms of the investment that they've done into stadiums and the training grounds and the facilities that comes along with it. and so i would say turkey is probably in a much more stronger position now than what it was in the previous six bids. also, bearing in mind that turkey has submitted two applications notjust for 2028 but also for 2032, i think finally turkey is going to get one of them. rajasthan royals survived a late scare to beat chennai super kings by three runs in their indian pemier league match. after being sent in to bat, england short form captain jos buttler helped himself to a quickfire 52. chasing a victory target of 176, ms dhoni — in his 200th match as captain of chennai — almost saw his side home, but they felljust short as the royals move to the top of the standings
12:52 am
with the super kings in fifth. actually, when there were 13 runs left, i thought holder will close it with ten or 12. i think that over, if you go for 20 runs and you have ms dhoni batting at the shorter end and someone like sandeep is coming, it is going to be a stiff challenge, because i thought the way he was playing zampa and chahal, he had calculated in his head that he wanted 20 for the last over. that was my assessment of what he did and he got it. and obviously... whenever we had to bowl a dot ball, there was a six ora four going, so, yeah, these things do happen. it's been a great week at the ipl, all last ball finishes, so, yeah, wonderful. now a sell—out crowd is expected at cardiff arms park this weekend as wales take on england in the women's six nations. the red roses welcome back four players from injury for their toughest challenge of the tournament so far. sara 0rchard has the details. so just a couple of changes for the red roses as they get ready for that big game against wales. alex matthews will come in and start at number eight. meanwhile, at fullback it's
12:53 am
gloucester—hartpury*s emma sing who gets her first start. however, the main talking points in the build up to this match have actually all been about wales, as they enter their second year of professionalism and the impact that those contracts have made. england have regularly been putting over 50 points on them, but has that gap started to close? the hopes are in wales that it has, but also the england captain molly parcer would like to see it close as well. this is what we want, because the simple fact is we want the game to grow, so that the better—quality rugby that fans are seeing, the more fans we get in, then everything grows with that. and we don't want it tojust be an england/france massive game in the six nations. like, if it's england/wales, wales/france — like, we want to be watching those kind of games as well and tactically and physically, that kind of game. the england head coach, simon middleton, has arguablyjust been tinkering with his world number one side despite having a huge raft of injuries and now players are coming back. they do have one weakness, though, and that does appear to be their goal—kicking,
12:54 am
with lower percentages than many other sides. but when i say many other sides, i mean men's international sides. he was discussing a lot today about the possibility that women's test teams or women's rugby in general could bring in the parameters when it comes to their goal kicking just because female athletes don't have the same power as men. first thing that goesl when you're trying to overstretch yourself i for power is accuracy. and so you may get players i who can achieve the distance, but the accuracy goes out because they're putting . everything into it. so, yeah, ijust... having seen the global game for the last sort of decade, . it's something that's improved massively because of- the commitment to it and the focus on it, l but it still falls short simply because of the physical- power of it, and i don't think that's right. - now, that was just a suggestion from middleton, but it will be fascinating to see if it is taken up by other coaches in the women's six nations and even considered by world rugby in the future. history made for great

britain's gymnasts — their first ever women's team gold at the european championships in turkey. 18—year—old defending floor and world champion jessica gadirova topped the standings in both the floor and beam qualifying. there were similarly impressive results for her team—mates 0ndine achampong, alice kinsella, georgia—mae fenton and the returning becky downie back on bars, as they made history, beating italy and netherlands to the gold medal of the four apparatus. it was really nice to be back. a really long wait. i kind of zoned out after the girls had done beam and floor, just to kind of get ready for that piece, but couldn't be more proud of them. and everyone did an incredible job today. what was your mindset before doing that routine? just try and focus on my cues. i mean, bars is one of those pieces — it's always a nerve—racking piece, but ijust told myself, "your cues are going to work" and tojust be quick with reactions, because i feel like on bars that's a piece that you need to need to be sharp on, i guess. and of course, you can get more

on that and everything else at the bbc sport website, but from me, tulsen tollett, and the rest of the team, till next time, bye—bye. hello there. storm noa has been bringing problems to transport, with road, rail, ferries and airports affected. meanwhile, out to sea, some wild weather in cornwall, with these large, mountainous waves pummeling the coastline. some of the waves were thought to be about eight metres high. that's the same height as two double decker buses stacked on top of each other. storm noa, then, has certainly been making its impact felt. it's this swirl of cloud you can see here on the satellite picture. and the top wind speed was recorded, as it often is in such storms, at the needles on the isle of wight — a very exposed site — at elsewhere, well into the 70s.

even across inland parts of southern england, we had gusts into the 60s of miles an hour and that was strong enough to blow over a few trees. now, over the next few hours, those very strong winds are starting to calm down. it's still quite windy, though, for wales and south—west england. temperatures coming down to between 3 and 6 celsius, very similar to what we've seen over recent nights. now, heading into thursday, it should be a fine start to the day for many for england and wales. there'll be showers across northern england, showers for scotland and northern ireland. and i think through the day, there is a chance that some of these showers, particularly for southern and eastern scotland, into eastern areas of england, well, they could merge together to give some longer spells of rain. and some of the rain heavy with some hail and thunder mixed in and temperatures still below par. but when the sunshine comes out, out of the breeze, probably not feeling too bad. probably not feeling too good on friday across southern parts of england and wales, with another area of low pressure moving in, bringing
12:58 am
outbreaks of rain widely. some of that's going to be quite heavy as well, whereas the further north you are, you will see showers and thunderstorms, some of them, again, merging together to give some longer spells of rain, so staying very unsettled and pretty cool again for april. highs only reaching around 12 or 13 degrees at best. however, as we get into the weekend, things start to cheer up. the south—westerly winds start to blow away some of that cooler air and the high pressure starts to flex its muscles. now, on saturday, there'll still be a few showers around, maybe a few morning mist and fog patches to clear, but there'll be some bright or sunny spells and, overall, it's a better kind of day weather—wise. temperatures climbing. we're looking at highs of 15 in glasgow, 15 in norwich and for london as well. and that's just the start of things, because through sunday and into next week, it gets even warmer. indeed, next week, for the first time this year, we should see highs hit 20.
