hello, from the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme: drama at the crucible with play suspended as a protestor interupts the world snooker championship. another heavy defeat for leeds who remain two points above the relegation zone as liverpool put six past them at elland road. and royal challengers bangalore fall short of the highest run—chase in indian premier league history as they're beaten by chennai super kings. hello and thanks forjoining us, here's your latest sports news. play at the world snooker championship was suspended after a protester climbed onto one of the tables

and covered it in orange powder. another protester tried to glue herself to a table. a man and a woman were later arrested by police. jamie broughton was at the crucible in sheffield. the evening session was just getting under way when a man and woman from the protest group stop oiljumped over the barriers here from the seats into the auditorium and the man climbed onto the table where robert and joe perry were playing their first round match. he then opened a packet of orange powder and emptied it onto the table before security intervened and the woman tried to get on the other side, on the other side of the barrier, at the moment where mark allen was playing. but the match referee stopped her before they could do any damage to the table. play resumed, but the other match was not able to continue as the cloth on the table needed to be replaced. i can tell you there was a lot of anger from those behind the scenes and the fans there about what had happened. have we seen anything like this before and how is this likely

to impact the championship? we have seen protests before and we saw one protester getting onto the room for fathers forjustice many times ago. but in terms of the protest, i don't think it's going to have too much of an impact on the tournament. the second session of the match was due to be played tomorrow night, but in the first session and there is a rest morning on thursday so that match can be played to a finish and so it should not have an impact on this tournament. there was big shock earlier in the day with the 2016 runner—up ding junhui knocked out. ding led iran's hossein vafaei by 5 frames to 4 overnight, but the world number 23 was in scintillating form, winning the first four frames of the day on his way to a 10—6 victory. vafaei now faces defending champion and world number one ronnie o'sullivan in the second round. leeds suffered another heavy defeat as they battle to stay in the premier league.

6—1 they were beaten at home by liverpool. mohamed salah and diogojota both scored twice at elland road as liverpool picked up a first league win in five games. leeds have now conceded 11 goals in their last 2 matches. 7 defeats in 11 games forjavi gracia's side. i'm not really bothered about this and it's not too important, it's about the performance and the performance was a winning performance, it is clear we have to win the game number now but for a few discussions about the first goal, i'm not sure but it was a clear game that we should win and that is what i wanted to see. nothing to say other than we, we lost our composure and we tried in the beginning and i think may be the first

goal, the goal that open the game is coming from that handball but after, nothing to say except trying to have proof —— improve for the next game because we need it. so this is how the top of the premier league table looks. liverpool now within two points of seventh placed brighton and just three away from that final europa league spot. down at the bottom things are looking increasingly perilous for leeds down in 16th. they remain just a couple of points above the drop zone. they go to fulham on saturday before a huge match against fellow strugglers leicester on tuesday. a couple of other football results from monday night across europe. in spain, mallorca have overtaken celta vigo to move up to 11th in la liga after a 1—0 win on their travels. and over in italy, atalanta remain in the final european spot in sixth after they drew i—all with fiorentina in serie a. later on tuesday, attention returns to the champions league with the first of the quarter final second leg ties.

napoli are looking to overturn a i—nil deficit against italian rivals ac milan, whilst chelsea have the difficult task of taking on real madrid, trailing 2—nil from the first match. but, interim manager frank lampard says "anything is possible in football". his side are without a win in 6 games, they've lost their last 3 and lampard says they will need a special stamford bridge atmosphere to pull off a shock against the holders. it is just worth focusing on the here and now, with a little understanding that if we get things right, if we work hard, if we do the right things in the game, then anything is possible. i've got no doubt it will be positive. and when i talk about it, i talk about the start of the game. i think the rest of it is down to us, it is down to us as a team to play with a real desire and a know—how, to try and turn this game around. the trainer of a horse that died during saturday's grand national race in the uk has blamed what he called "ignorant" protesters for his animal's death. sandy thomson said the delay

to the start of the race after animal rights activists entered the track "unsettled" everyone. the protest group, animal rising, said its actions were "aimed to prevent" the death of horses. here's our sports editor, dan roan. they were the scenes that racing had been dreading. animal rights protesters at aintree delaying saturday's grand national with 118 arrested. horses were kept in the paddock until the race could start and the trainer of hill 16 who was put down after being injured falling at the first fence blame the activists for the death. since the course has been modified, an average of under two falls and this year there were eight falls. everybody got very uptight, very unsettled, and this was all caused by these so—called animal lovers who actually are ignorant and have absolutely no idea about the welfare of horses. chanting: we shall not, we shall not be moved! l but animal rising which organised the protest said

the protests aimed to prevent the deaths of horses of which there were three at the meeting. the whole reason the horses are running so people could bet on the horse, jockeys could make money and people could have a fun day out and that doesn't seem like a good enough reason for putting an animal in harm's way. supporting ofjump racing point to a reduction in fatalities for horses here at aintree and in recent years after safety reforms. they say an entire industry and the existence of the thoroughbreds depend on the sport continuing. the critics say it is an outdated and cruel spectacle. what is certain is the chaotic scenes here on saturday were a bad advert for the sport and there is now the threat of further protests this summer. what i have said is we will review the incidents that took place but we are flexible in terms of looking at how the race continues in the future, but we know that part of the grand national*s appeal is how challenging it is for both horse and rider. many reformers believe

there is a limit to just how safe the grand national can truly be with a0 horses and 30 fences involved. i think one of the things we have asked for for a while is to see the field size of the grand national reduced. you know, nobody would argue it is acceptable that we come out of a festival of racing with three dead horses. the country's second most popular spectator sport continued today, but racing once again finds itself under pressure to become safer for those involved. dan roan, bbc news. to cricket and the chennai super kings are up to third in the ipl with victory over the royal challengers bangalore after they fell just short of the highest run—chase in indian premier league history. south african batsman devon conway got things going for the superkings with a rapid 83 offjust 45 balls as they reached 226 for 6 from their 20 overs. in reply, an excellent partnership from faf de plessis and glenn maxwell got bangalore

very close but they fell just eight runs short. yeah, very happy with the way things went tonight it was really good surface out there and managed to get some good momentum throughout the partnership and very chuffed with the way things were tonight. it was a bit disappointing but, we did so well to get so close to be in a position where we could've won. we're trying to go as hard as we could to get the run rate under ten and make a little bit easier for the back end but it was pretty exciting game of cricket, regardless of value look at it. —— regardless of how you look at it. a couple of internationals to bring you up to date with as well. in lahore, new zealand beat pakistan by in their latest t20 match. captain tom lathum leading from the front with a half century as the black caps won by 4 runs. elsewhere, sri lanka are in complete control after the second day of their first test against ireland in galle.

sports news at our website that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello there. we've started this week off on a pretty warm note. in fact, many parts of the uk saw the warmest day of the year so far on monday. however, over the next few days, those temperatures will be coming down as we pick up a chilly easterly breeze. and there could even be a bit of rain in places by the end of the week. now, high pressure dominates the scene over the next few days, sitting across scandinavia, bringing this easterly breeze. but more icy bars on the chart mean that easterly wind picks up and we'll start to see these weather fronts rolling in off the near continent, bringing outbreaks of rain, particularly for england and wales, whereas further north it should tend to stay largely dry. now for tuesday morning, we'll start off with a bit of low cloud mist, but that should tend to burn away. many places will see a sunny day, but we'll see thicker cloud
2:57 am
for southern and southeastern areas. and the breeze will be stronger, noticeably cooler, i think, across the board, but certainly down north sea coast. that's because the sea temperatures are pretty low at this time of year, seven or eight degrees. so it will feel cool immediately on the north sea coast, head further inland and again, we're close to the mid—teens, some of the highest temperatures for western scotland, up to the high teens there. so as we move out of tuesday day through the night, we'll start to see further low clouds and mist the rolling in off the north sea once again, especially for england and wales, eastern scotland, clearer skies further west. so it's here where we could see temperatures dip close to freezing two, three degrees. generally for most, we're between four and seven celsius. a little change as we head into wednesday. again, we've got high pressure dominating the scene. it's going to be another windy day, strong easterly winds, so feeling cool again along the north sea coast and we'll see thicker cloud at times rolling in across england and wales. clusters of showers affecting the south of england, certainly the south west, perhaps in towards south wales. but most places will be dry, get a chilly feel to things towards the east, further west where around the low to mid—teens celsius. and then as we move throughout thursday into friday,
2:58 am
we start to see more weather fronts pushing in some of these weather fronts, bringing more prolonged rain at times to england and wales on friday. and again, it's going to be quite cool with a strong east the breeze so temperatures dipping away as we head towards the end of the week into the weekend. and there's a greater chance of many of us, certainly england and wales, seeing some wetter weather.
