came third, gliding into town around four hours later, a little worse for ware, but looking surprisingly cheery. still to come on the travel show: another example of the lengths humans can push themselves to. i can't believe k2 is right here! we're so close! and the rison here! we're so close! and the prison turned _ here! we're so close! and the prison turned tourist - prison turned tourist attraction on a mexican island. so don't go away. now for the next in our series about the amazing feats of endurance that some people put themselves through in the name of adventure and this one is pretty awesome. k2 in northern pakistan is one of the world's most dangerous mountains and we've been talking to the first arab woman to ever reach its summit. here's her remarkable story.
5:43 am
0ctober here's her remarkable story. october 31, 2021 was the day i decided i wanted to do k2. it almost marked the one—year mark of my dad passing away. i wanted this year to my year of climbing, climbing back up through life, climbing through grief, climbing to honour my dad. what better than the savage mountain? especially because it hasn't been done from anyone in the region. more people have been to outer space than have climbed k2. it's a serious, risky climb. 0ne than have climbed k2. it's a serious, risky climb. one out of four people that attempt k2 die trying. 0n of four people that attempt k2 die trying. on our of four people that attempt k2 die trying. 0n ourfourth day, our fifth day, that's when we saw k2 for the first time. and i can't believe k2*s right here. we're so close, yet so far. i think that was the moment when i really felt like oh, my god. i can't believe we're doing this. we had our mustering guides, nepaly sherpas. they've climbed everest and k2 several times. then we have our porters, kitchen staff, so an entire army of people. but in terms of the climbers, we were four.
5:44 am
there's always a lot of singing in climbing on mountains, to keep the morale up. and so it just so happened that there were so many celebrations and music and, you know, just, again, like a celebration of different cultures. and i always bring my music with me and i'm always dancing as well as. i dance when i feel my lowest. it seems like i'm happy but usually when i'm dancing is when i need that push. today i feel really sick. my stomach bug has accelerated. i took antibiotics. it's nice to have this time. antibiotics. it's nice to have this time-— antibiotics. it's nice to have this time. you're doing very aood this time. you're doing very good today- _ this time. you're doing very good today. to _ this time. you're doing very good today. to be - this time. you're doing very good today. to be honest, l this time. you're doing very good today. to be honest, i wasn't doing _ good today. to be honest, i wasn't doing so _ good today. to be honest, i wasn't doing so good - good today. to be honest, i wasn't doing so good at - good today. to be honest, i wasn't doing so good at the| wasn't doing so good at the beginning, but you guys pushed me. we are close to the chimney, taking a little break on this very awkward rock formation. never give up. we
5:45 am
are at camp two! the weather is very turbulent, and that is what it is notorious for, feeling super warm and sunny to a full—blown blizzard within an avalanche, rock fall. rockfall was the scariest thing. this is a really dangerous section because there is a lot of loose rocks. rocks come flying in from 1000 metres above you, and sometimes they are boulders. you can hear them, they sound like helicopters coming closer and closer, and it felt like a playstation game honestly. the trail itself changes a lot, you are going from snow and ice to rock. there are rolling rocks. the rope may snap. the most challenging aspect about the trip was a felt like the sense
5:46 am
of safety on cato is very minimal. anything that happens to you above base camp, you are on your own —— k2. there are choppers that come, but they may come in five or six days. we are moving up to our summit rotation tonight. they are singing because it is good weather finally. singing because it is good weatherfinally. have been waiting for this day for two weeks. final hours of k2, i am sitting at my tent at camp four, we are supposed to be resting. i can't sleep i am so excited and so nervous. we are preparing for one of the most exciting moment of my life. i am ready for this. this is why i am here. the moment we set off, it was pitch black. or you could see was the trail of lights from the people ahead of us. the ice wall was a bit traumatic. i have never done
5:47 am
climbing on an ice wall. i kept slipping. my heart rate shot up, i had a full—blown panic attack, ifelt like i was going to die. i had to filter out the noise and everything. i needed to calm myself down, calm my heart rate down. at the end of the wall there is a body there. it is really terrifying every time you see someone who has passed. like you, they want to climb the mountain. that was just a really scary reminder. 0nce just a really scary reminder. once we got to the very last section before you kind of have to walk on the edge and get to the summit, i was like, this is the summit, i was like, this is the moment, this is the moment! i was walking on that path, i get to the summit and then i just drop my bag and for a good 30 minutes i couldn't stop crying. i am 30 minutes i couldn't stop crying. iam here! the summit of k2. i couldn't believe that this is it.
5:48 am
this is not just this is notjust about me anymore. this is for my family stop i have put my family through so much stress doing that. it is for my country as well. that moment... i can't tell you how surreal it felt. never give up! these are happy tears. if there is a perfect moment, that was it. what an unbelievable achievement. now to the sunnier climb of mexico and what used to be one of the country's most isolated and infamous prisons. it is on its own island 3.5 hours off the pacific coast. it finally closed as a prison back in 2019, and since then, there has been a lot of work put into transform it into a nature
