coming up on the programme: time's up for tottenham's interim manager christian stellini afterjust four games — he's sacked following their 6—1 thurmping at newcastle. and a former spurs boss could be on his way to chelsea, with the club said to be in advanced talks to appoint mauricio pochettino. tottenham have sacked interim manager cristian stellini after less than a month in thejob. it follows their 6—1 thrashing at newcastle in the premier league on sunday. former spurs midfielder ryan mason, who had a spell in charge whenjose mourinho left in 2021, takes over as caretaker.

in a statement, chairman daniel levy said... spurs are six points off the champions league places. they play manchester united on thursday. daniel levy has turned tottenham into a huge club. he's done many, many good things. he's built some fantastic infrastructure, the best training ground in the country, the best stadium in the country. he's turned tottenham from a mid—table team to contenders at the top end of the table, in an era in which the financial landscape of football has moved away from spurs. that said, the decisions made over the last five years have almost all of them been bad, ever since the decision not to back mauricio pochettino in the transfer market, which of course led to the end of pochettino*s tenure. and since then, it's just gone from bad to worse at spurs. i don't really think they know what direction

they want to be headed in. all the appointments they've made in the last few years have been disasters. it's an incredibly difficultjob at this point because you've really got to re—energise the whole club, you've got to get the players back onside, the fans back onside, you've got to manage the transition away he from the older generation through to the younger generation, which is always very difficult. i think the two most plausible contenders right now are luis enrique, the former barcelona and spain manager — who was very highly rated by fabio paratici, the former managing director of football, who of course resigned last week — and julian naglesmann, who was very heavily linked with the chelsea job. that didn't happen. naglesmann is now, i think, back on the market. i'm not entirely sure how much he will want to come to tottenham, but if he can be persuaded to come to spurs, and i think naglesmann would be a very, very attractive candidate, both to the tottenham board and to many tottenham fans. chelsea are in advanced talks to make former tottenham boss mauricio pochettino their new manager. the argentinian is said to be keen on the position, but more negotiations will take place before any deal is finalised. pochettino would take over from

interim manager frank lampard. chelsea are out of all cup competitions and all but certain to miss out on europe next season. leeds managerjavi gracia insists he's changed things for the better at the club, despite their dip in form. gracia won three of his first six league games in charge, but three damaging defeats have left leeds just a point above the relegation zone with six matches to go. they play fellow strugglers leicester on tuesday. i remember when i arrived five games ago, we were in second—bottom, emotionally in a difficult moment as well, and we were able to change the dynamic. and now... we did it and we can do it again after these three bad results. the sacking of patrick vieira at crystal palace last month left the premier league with no black managers. lower down the pyramid, the theme continues, with very few at efl sides —

which makes the long—term presence of andy preece at sixth—tier chorley all the more remarkable. preece, who's managed 750 games, says it's a journey where he feels his race has counted against him. look, when i started out in 1996, i think i was one of five or six black managers. 2023, i'm probably one of maybe less than five or six managers. so that's 2a years and nothing seems to have changed. there are hardly any black managers who have got 750 games. what is your view of that? it must be really challenging for black players when they retire to look and see the lack of black managers and whether there's an opportunity. and i'm sure a lot turned away and think, "i am not bothering. "it's just not worth it." but i think there's a little bit of hope. you know, i've managed to see

it through and get through... but do you feel as though you're a role model? itjust shows that, look, if you're willing to take an opportunity, maybe not what you want... sometimes you look and you think, "oh, this is going to be "so tough," but sometimes you have to take the challenge up and believe in yourself and believe in your ability. sometimes you have to be humble enough to... because i've gone from managing the football league to taking the uiiis at fleetwood and the uiiis at blackpool. believe in yourself, believe you can change, believe that people will look at you for what you do and what you build. and whenever i go in anywhere as a manager, i look to build

the club over a long term and look to get a long—term structure in, which we've got here now. and all the clubs i've been at, i've been there for three, four or five years. it's only southport where i had a very short spell. every other club, i've done three, four, five years and left a mark and helps the clubs recover from some difficult circumstances. so, yeah, i think if people look at that, i think i can give them a little bit of belief. here's to the next 750 games. 250'll do! laughter andy preece there, speaking to the bbc*s simon stone. jose mourinho*s roma have dropped out of the champions league places in serie a after a 3—1 defeat at atalanta. roma are level on points with fourth place ac milan, three behind juventus, with seven games of the league season to play. atalanta remain seventh, a place beneath europa conference league qualification. italian authorities will impose stadium bans on 171 juventus fans who were found to have chanted racist abuse at inter milan striker romelu lukaku during a coppa italia semifinal earlier this month. lukaku was subjected to abuse during the first leg when he scored to earn inter a 1—1 draw. the on—loan chelsea forward was sent off after receiving a second yellow for his goal celebration, where he held his finger up to his mouth to silence the home fans,

but his one—match ban has been overturned. four—time winner mark selby is into the quarterfinals of the world snooker championship in sheffield. world number two selby beat fellow englishman gary wilson, winning by 13 frames to 7. selby will play john higgins next. the scot is also a four—time former champion. qualifier anthony mcgill held his nerve to complete victory overjack lisowski. lisowski narrowed the gap to 11—8, at one stage having trailed 7—1, but mcgill took the next two frames to book a third crucible quarterfinal in four years. mcgill will play chinese debutant sijiahui in the last eight. the 20—year—old beat engand's robert milkins by 13—7 and finished off the match with a century to secure his place in the last eight.

he said, i'm so surprised to get into the quarterfinals, i'm even surprised by myself making it to the crucible stage. ireland have battled hard on the first day of their second test against sri lanka, reaching 319—4 at close. captain andrew balbirnie was denied a first test century — dismissed for 95. it was a gritty response from ireland after sri lanka's biggest ever victory in the first test in galle last week. over in rawalpindi, new zealand beat pakistan by six wickets to tie the t20 series at two matches all. mohammed rizwan made 98 not out as the hosts made 193—5, but mark chapman blazed a brilliant unbeaten century to see new zealand home with four balls to spare. the teams now play five one day internationals. bottom side delhi capitals have made it two wins out of two in the ipl after holding off second from bottom sunrisers hyderabad. manish pandey and axar patel

top scored for delhi. both made 3a, but their total of 144—9 looked distinctly modest. sunrisers, though, couldn't find any momentum with the bat and fell eight runs short of their target. it is very important not to think too much ahead of the tournament. of course we lost the first five games, and delest couple of games, we played really well, as a bowling unit. i still think we need to improve on batting prospects and probably will do that in the next game. i think it is obvious to see that chasing a total like 145. .. i do not think there were any sort of devils in the pitch. i felt we could have been more proactive throughout

i prefer my batterers more enterprising. plenty of stiff legs around the uk after the london marathon over the weekend. there were so many wonderful stories of incredible runners completing the course for charity, including a royal marine who ran 26.2 miles with a fridge on his back. sam hammond is now a world record holder after beating the record for the fastest marathon carrying a household appliance — he knocked 57 minutes off the previous best time. you can get all the latest sports news at our website — that's bbc.com/sport. but from me, will perry, and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, bye for now. hello there. very few places on monday had a completely dry day and temperatures struggled to get into double figures. we've seen the colder air down from the arctic move down across the whole of the uk.
1:56 am
that's firmly in place right now. there are some weather fronts trying to push up from the south—west, but most of the showers that we had earlier on are getting drawn away into the north sea as that low pressure heads towards scandinavia. so as the showers die away, skies are clearing, and with the winds lighter, temperatures are falling quite sharply. it'll be a cold start to tuesday. lowest temperatures, scotland and northern ireland, “4 or —5 celsius. so, a frosty start for much of the country on tuesday. but it should be a bright and sunny one. as is quite typical for this time of the year, through the morning, as temperatures rise, the cloud will bubble up. in the afternoon, it spreads out and it becomes increasingly cloudy. very few showers around, mind you, most of them in the north of scotland — again, a touch wintry over the hills — but the winds are a lot lighter here and we'll have light winds elsewhere as well. those temperatures ranging from 7 degrees in northern scotland to only 12 celsius in the south—east of england. so colder weather is in place, these weather fronts trying to move up from the south—west, making very little progress. we are going to see more cloud coming in overnight into wednesday, so the frost is going to be more limited to scotland and northern england. and here, there may well be some sunshine
1:57 am
for a while on wednesday, so too northern ireland, but again the cloud will build up, we'll see a few more showers breaking out, mainly across northern england. further south, wales, the midlands and southern england look pretty cloudy. quite a dull day. bit misty over the hills in the south—west, and the clouds thick enough to give a few spots of light rain or drizzle. and those temperatures not really changing very much into wednesday. there is some milder air, as i say, trying to come in from the south—west, but it's making very slow progress, pushing away that cold air that we've drawn down from the arctic. and it looks like whilst there could be some sunshine around for a while across northern areas, again, the cloud will increase and it's looking pretty dull further south. the cloud thickening in the south—west to bring with it some outbreaks of rain, into south—west england and south wales. those temperatures creeping up but only by a degree or two. it will be a cold start to this week, a chilly week ahead, certainly, with those early frosts around, before the cloud comes in, limiting the frost, lifting the temperatures just a little bit, but bringing with it later in the week the chance of some rain.
