involvement in the country. we can start with sudan's northern neighbour, escript. egypt. egypt has a concern for water from the river nile. egypt is concerned about this dam, they feel it could cut off the water supply that goes into egypt and bolsters the agriculture. they are looking to sudan to stop this ethiopian project. this man, egypt's president, is a close friend of the general. they went to the same military college and he has sent fighter jets military college and he has sent fighterjets and pilots into sudan to help the general take command of the air space. and saudi arabia and the air space. and saudi arabia and the u. ae have spent billions in

sudan. their concern is to invest in agriculture that will help them provide food security for their own desert—dwelling populations. so billions of dollars have gone into this already. but beyond that, $6 billion was agreed in a deal which was meant to facilitate the construction of this massive new port facility in sudan. whether that will go ahead will depend on the political situation. saudi arabia and the uae have worked with both generals and soldiers were sent to fight in yemen alongside saudi arabia. and now russia. russia's extreme has been to have a naval base in sudan. this would be their first in africa. and they have
2:10 pm
already got permission from the military to do this, but the plans hang in the balance and the political outcome will determine whether the plans can go ahead. this picture was taken in february of 2023, russia's foreign minister meeting both of the generals involved in is in crisis. we should mention that the wagner group that is affiliated with russia has allegedly been taking part in military and commercial activities in sudan. it is alleged they have been smuggling gold out of sudan and thatis been smuggling gold out of sudan and that is one of the way that russia has been able to cushion the blow of the sanctions for the war in ukraine. and this is being watched by the united states and the allies in the united kingdom and the eu, who don't want the expansion of russian influence. they have been pushing for a return to civilian

rule in sudan. the united states and the united kingdom are part of a diplomatic group known as the quad, and they have been trying to push for civilian rule. but what is important to remember is there are seven african countries surrounding sudan and they will bear the brunt of the refugees who leave their homes and also the destabilisation in the region. so what happens in sudan does not stay in sudan. more? sudan does not stay in sudan. now from khartoum _ sudan does not stay in sudan. now from khartoum we _ sudan does not stay in sudan. now from khartoum we understand a ceasefire does appear to be holding. but there are reports of sporadic gun fire. this is the fourth time they have tried to stop the fighting which started on 15th april. those previous ceasefires were not observed by either side. it is hoped people can get out to get supplies
