the first our listeners as well. the first hour was quite something, exhilarating and exhausting, but it always is. live from london, this is bbc news eight schoolchildren and a security guard have been shot dead by a fellow pupil in a rare mass shooting in serbia. sudan is headed towards a humanitarian catastrophe, according to the un. their humanitarian chief and secretary general are leading efforts to get aid in visits to the country and nearby kenya. russia says nearly 200 people have been fighting a fire at a large fuel storage tank not far from the bridge that leads to occupied crimea. an investigation finds russian naval ships were close to the nord stream gas pipelines when they exploded last september. eight pupils and a security guard have been killed in a school shooting in the serbian

capital, belgrade. police have confirmed that the gunman, a pupil at the school, has been arrested. six more young students and the history professor are seriously injured. police say an investigation into the motives behind the shooting is being carried out. mass shootings are rare in serbia, which has very strict gun laws. we'll get more on this story when we have it. the warring military leaders in sudan have agreed a seven—day truce to start on thursday. the deal was announced by south sudan which says the two sides also agreed to name representatives for peace talks. previous ceasefires have been repeatedly violated. this was the sudanese capital, khartoum, before the announcement was made. you can see smoke from the fighting across the skyline. on tuesday the african union held an emergency meeting on the conflict, bringing together african, arab, un and other representatives. meanwhile preparations are underway for the final evacuation flight of british citizens

to leave port sudan. i spoke to our diplomatic correspondent paul adams in nairobi who said there's little hope that the proposed ceasefire will work. we heard last night that there will be another ceasefire starting from tomorrow and lasting for seven days. and that the two warring parties have nominated representatives to sit down around the table. i don't think there's any great sense of optimism on eitherfront think there's any great sense of optimism on either front because essentially, the ceasefire will only replace three—day ceasefires which have not been well observed at all over the last week or so. as for the possibility of political talks, we heard last night from senior general on the sudanese army side that there was no intention at all of sitting down and talking to the leader of the rapid support forces, so at the
11:03 am
moment, we don't see an immediate prospect of meaningful political talks. as for the humanitarian situation, the international community is gearing up its effort. the secretary general who is here in nairobi today, his senior humanitarian envoy arrived a short time ago in portadown to oversee the situation mayor. port sudan is obviously illogical hub for aid to come in by the public is, unless are security guarantees for the aid agencies, the aid that comes in simply cannot get to the places where it is needed. we also heard this morning from the world food programme that some of their warehouses inside the country had been looted over the past few weeks. so the international community face a real challenge as they try to address not only the 100,000 or so people who have fled across sudan the*s borders but the 300,000 or so
11:04 am
civilians who are displaced within sudan and need help. a big fire has broken out at a fuel storage facility in southern russia, close to the bridge leading to occupied crimea. it happened in the the krasnodar region. officials haven't said what caused the blaze, but it comes days after they blamed a ukrainian drone attack for a similarfire in the crimean port of sevastopol. for a third night in a week. i wasjoined earlier by our correspondent in kyiv, hugo bachega. he gave us some more detail. it was another night of air strikes by russia and the third night in a week that russia attacked kyiv. all drones that were fired at the capital were intercepted by the country's air defence and the ukrainian military said it had intercepted most of the drones that were fired, so again i think this is another indication of the major role that air defence has played in protecting cities and towns across the country. the military is saying that russia
11:05 am
fired 26 of these drones and that 21 were intercepted. no places were hit here in kyiv, but there have been reports of damage in cities across the country. in the central region of kirovograd officials say an oil depot was hit. in dnipro a government building was damaged. in the city of konstantinovka, buildings were also hit and reports suggest that a military facility was the target there. so again, more attacks by russia, targeting cities away from the front lines and it seems russia has returned to this strategy of launching missiles and drones, targeting places across the country. and it seems that many of these recent targets have been military facilities, or facilities being used by the ukrainian military, perhaps to support this much anticipated ukrainian counteroffensive. hugo, what more do we know
11:06 am
about the fire at a fuel depot? how significant could that be? yes, so we had a report from emergency services saying that this fire was caused by a drone and no information about who could have been behind this alleged attack. the suspicion is that ukrainians would have some kind of involvement here. as you say, this comes just days after another fire hit an oil depot in crimea and again i think the authorities there said that this was a drone attack and again decided the ukrainians were behind it. here in kyiv we haven't heard anything from the authorities. the officials here have this policy of ambiguity when it comes to attacks in russia and in russian—controlled territories. they don't deny involvement and they don't confirm. what is interesting
11:07 am
is at the weekend we heard from a military spokesperson who said that attacking facilities being used by the russian military was part of the strategy of the ukrainian military ahead of its counteroffensive. and we have seen a number of these incidents in recent days, so perhaps this is evidence of this strategy by the ukrainians. they say they are finishing their preparations for this counteroffensive. joining us now on the phone lines from cairo is mai abdulmoneim. she's a business owner from khartoum who managed to escape the violence with her family a few days ago. thank you for being with us. tell us about what happened to you when the fighting broke out.— fighting broke out. hello, good mornin: ,
