live from london, this is bbc news. russia accuses ukraine of a drone attack on the kremlin, kyiv denies having anything to do with it. a teenage suspect is detained after eight children and a security guard shot dead at a school in belgrade. one of the biggest ever police operations against one of italy's biggest mafia syndicate says dozens of arrests across europe. welcome to the programme. we start with the news out of russia, moscow specifically and russia's claims
3:01 pm
that two drones attacked the kremlin the seat of russian government, they have blamed ukraine. ukraine has denied it. we will get into those claims and counter claims in a moment. first, let's take a look at this footage that's been posted on social media. on the left hand side you can see that flying dot and then the explosion. there are two main videos, this is the second one. just above the right, there seems to be some smoke eventually. these two videos i should say are posted on social media and our teams are right now in the act of verifying them. we are at the stage where there are no immediate red flags but it doesn't mean they are completely verified as of yet. but the fact that we have
3:02 pm
both russia and ukraine talking about them, that led us to the view that we should show them. so pretty extraordinary clips and an extraordinary clips and an extraordinary claim and counterclaim. we have correspondence on both sides of this. let's first go to moscow and our correspondent there. just talk us through what exactly russia has said? this statement — exactly russia has said? this statement from _ exactly russia has said? this statement from the - exactly russia has said? ti 3 statement from the kremlin saying that ukraine used two drones to attack the kremlin buildings last night. it said the russian forces managed to bring those drums down and there were no injuries and the president was unhurt although they did say it was an assassination

attempt. it's not clear what happened but those videos have been emerging on social media showing a fire and smoke and an explosion around one of the kremlin buildings. if what the kremlin is saying is true, then i think it raises questions about how well protected the president is. he seems to be one of the most well guarded leaders in the world. when my colleagues and i have been at events the level of protection is huge. an enormous security detail, enormous convoys, traffic halted, that kind of thing. but questions will also be asked about the effectiveness of russian air defence because in recent months we've spotted a number of air defence systems that have been placed in strategic locations around moscow usually in the vicinity of
3:04 pm
key buildings such as the defence ministry precisely for this reason. the kremlin is nervous that ukraine or those sympathetic to ukraine will launch aerial attacks against russian targets. i think drone attacks are getting more and more common and they seem to be creeping closer and closer to the capital. just this morning there was a drone attack in a region near the occupied ukrainian region of crimea. a number of other incidents in previous days, explosions, strange incidents, two trains were derailed near the border with ukraine yesterday and the day before the local government claimed those on improvised explosive devices. these incidents are becoming more common and serious and causing a lot of nervousness here in

3:08 pm
there has been an increase in military activity from both sides as the ukrainians say they are now finishing their plans for a much anticipated counteroffensive to try to take back territory that is now in russian occupation. so in the last few days they have been explosions in russia and in russian —controlled territory, russia has again targeted the cities across the country. this morning we had more attacks targeting kyiv under the cities across ukraine. so this latest claim by moscow happens as both sides are preparing for this much anticipated ukrainian counteroffensive.— much anticipated ukrainian counteroffensive. thank you for that. just want _ counteroffensive. thank you for that. just want to _ counteroffensive. thank you for that. just want to show - counteroffensive. thank you for that. just want to show you - counteroffensive. thank you for that. just want to show you the | that. just want to show you the initial video again when i bring you

one that is broken in the last few hours. we are going to go to serbia, the capital belgrade, where eight pupils in the security guard have been killed in a school shooting. these are pictures from the outside of the school in the aftermath. difficult to try and begin to cope with what's happened but we know police have arrested a 14—year—old pupil from that school. we believe he walked into a history lesson and opened fire. the weapon belonged to his father. police are investigating the motives. they have already declared three days of national mourning. handcuffed and hooded,
3:11 pm
belgrade police took the suspected shooter for questioning. he is just 14 years old. parents and teachers were left in shock. this sort of thing just doesn't happen in serbian schools, despite high levels of gun ownership. any gun crime is rare and mass shootings in classrooms are unheard of. police say the suspect arrived at the school on the morning after the labor day holiday. first he argued with a security guard at the entrance of the vladislav ribnikara school, then he pulled out a gun and shot him. parents say their children have told them what happened next. the shooter entered a history class, fired at the teacher and then turned his weapon on his classmates. translation: the teacher immediately i sheltered the children, locked them i in, some of them were under the tables so they were safe inside. after i don't know how much time, they let them out. police believe the suspect used a gun owned by his father. it is one of serbia's's worst ever mass shootings, the shock
