from earlier, shaking hands and posing for a selfie is and crouching down to speak to children as well. so just a little glimpse of some of the interactions that they were having with the crowds. as i said, it was not something that the crowds were expecting because it was a bit of a surprise royal walkabout by william and kate but are lot the members of the crowd were there anyway as part of the bay coronation lunch and in advance of the coronation concert that is taking place in windsor castle a little bit later. there were crowds they are in attendance for those things. as a special bonus, an unexpected surprise, had william and kate attending for a royal walkabout. our home afffairs correspondent helena wilkinsonjoins me now.

basis as to what steps they should have taken. and i know that they took into account, and i think they were quite right to take into account, the context of the event as a whole. we were on the global stage, there were 200 foreign dignitaries in the uk, in london at an event. among the 52 arrested where environmental campaigners and anti—royalist republicans. london's met police said its focus wasn't peaceful protest but potential disruption. it said it had received intelligence about plans to deface monuments or disrupt the coronation procession. the leader of anti—royal campaigners republic, graham smith, was one of those taken in. after almost 16 hours, he was released, saying there was no longer a right to peaceful protest and they can k. protest in the uk. labour wants more of an explanation.
3:09 pm
yeah, people can disagree and disagree well, i hope. and i hope it is for the met to explain the arrests and make sure they got the balance right. if they didn't get it right, you know, i think the case here demonstrates it — it is important to hold your hands up. it's not clear if a new law giving police further powers to proactively intervene again some protesters was used yesterday. some were accused of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance, others affray. but now the met is fending off claims it acted like the police in moscow and others are asking why people miles away from the procession in east london were also detained. robin brant, bbc news. the events of the coronation weekend continue. let's go to my colleague. he saw a royal walkabout that took many by surprise. we he saw a royal walkabout that took many by surprise-— he saw a royal walkabout that took many by surprise. we have seen that. this is what — many by surprise. we have seen that. this is what i — many by surprise. we have seen that. this is what i am _ many by surprise. we have seen that. this is what i am seeing _ many by surprise. we have seen that. this is what i am seeing over - many by surprise. we have seen that. this is what i am seeing over my - this is what i am seeing over my shoulder. they opened up the security gates here at windsor,

these are all the people who have been queueing. i know i have been telling you it is empty behind me, thatis telling you it is empty behind me, that is because the people who have been qa, they have been kept away from this area. they are now being let in and they have opened up the security gates. they are taking up their places ahead of this concert at eight o'clock this evening. we saw the prince and princess of wales, that is about the third time we have seen them during the coronation weekend. they were out and about with people who are taking part in a smaller concert and the big lunch. people who were out here all day who were surprised by the visit by the prince and princess of wales. it is important for people to see these images, all part of a bid to bring the royal family a little bit more into the modern era and make it more accessible, make the british public feel they have access
3:11 pm
to the royals. it is catherine and william who are seen as being at the forefront of this, they are the next generation. catherine are always —— is always seen as very glamorous. buckingham palace is not blind to all of this, they know what a valuable asset they have and that is why we have seen them so many times. and this is this common touch, coming out and mixing with the crowds. we heard from helena's guessed earlier. they had poured at cocktail for themselves for the picnic lunch and then offered a shot of it to the prince of wales and then he offered it to the princess. it is that accessibility that makes it seem as if they are at one with their population. it is important, it will be the stamp of the new era.
3:12 pm
they have been out and about, they were out and about on the tube on friday and then yesterday on them all before the coronation. they will go and get ready for the concert because the whole of the royal family will be taking part at the concert. i remember being down at the mall for thejubilee concert. the royal family was all there, tapping away and they will be watching away as well tonight. as helena said, if you do not have tickets, you have been told not to come out to windsor because it is, i'm afraid all sold out. you come out to windsor because it is, i'm afraid all sold out.— i'm afraid all sold out. you spoke about the importance _ i'm afraid all sold out. you spoke about the importance of - i'm afraid all sold out. you spoke about the importance of the - i'm afraid all sold out. you spoke l about the importance of the royals being seen as accessible and getting close to the public. how important is the broad range of events that are happening over this whole coronation weekend to ensuring that public support? t coronation weekend to ensuring that public support?— public support? i think this is all art of it. public support? i think this is all part of it- i— public support? i think this is all
3:13 pm
part of it. i spoke _ public support? i think this is all part of it. i spoke earlier - public support? i think this is all part of it. i spoke earlier to - public support? i think this is all part of it. i spoke earlier to the l part of it. i spoke earlier to the woman who is running the big lunch, all of these lunches that are happening all around the country, all about community building and about getting people out of their houses and into their communities, having conversations, combating loneliness in the face of the pandemic. the big help out tomorrow, people being encouraged in big ways and small ways to help their communities. we know from the data that it helps the people being helped and you. we know if you volunteer, it makes you feel better. all of that is part of this community building, a royalfamily thatis community building, a royalfamily that is in touch with community that is looking at health problems and wanting to build communities across of the country. all of this is an effort of king charles in this new, more modern era, to make a family thatis more modern era, to make a family that is is seen as more accessible.
3:14 pm
we saw the protest yesterday, there are anti—monarchists who wanted their voices heard. there is a growing sentiment according to polls amongst younger people, they don't feel that excited about a royal family. it is not about antipathy but in deference or indifference which might be more desperate —— like dangerous things. you have these more community activities, at these more community activities, at the same time you have this more sacred ancient ceremony. you have all of the artefacts that may be seen as too remote or too much for people who are seen... we see these community activities to try and group andrew the royal family more firmly in the british population. we will speak to her later.
3:15 pm
0ur entertainment correspondent, lizo mzimba is backstage at the concert. they have a stellar cast, don't they? we saw with the late queen's jubilee celebrations, the one in in 2012 and 2022. we have become used to seeing these big musical extravaganza is. this one is different, this is taking place at windsor castle. and with the previousjubilee celebrations, they tend to be quite pop and rock orientated, but this one is slightly different. they have gone for a feel of being different across the whole cultural divide. so notjust big, popular names from the world of music but there are a collaboration between various bodies that enjoy royal patronage, the royal ballet

their work and one assumes that is one of the reasons he was keen them to take part. similarly with the royal ballet stop the two principals from the royal ballet taking part in that special showcase performance. her majesty the queen camilla is a very strong attendee of the valley, she is a very big fan of ballet. i think it is fair to say it reflects his interest and his interest in arts, particularly of shakespeare, is well documented over the years. in a sense it feels very, very appropriate that you have got a showcase performance from the royal shakespeare company is well as some of the biggest names in pop and rock music and put on a concert. it is the kind of concert that a lot of the kind of concert that a lot of the things happening tonight, you think it would be what he would choose to watch in his spare time

hello there, part two of the coronation weekend looking a lot better, then it's all change for a bank holiday monday with another frontal system working its way in, bringing rain and heavy showers. we are in between weather systems, this is monday's rain, this is yesterday's rain. a warm feel to things in the afternoon with the chance of showers in eastern scotland and eastern england. it will stay grey, murky and chilly for eastern scotland and the northern isles. elsewhere, it's going to be warm. temperatures up to 21, maybe
3:57 pm
22 degrees, could make it the warmest day of the year so far. cloud will bring up with an increasingly southerly breeze continuing to work its way eastwards. so it turns wet and windy for northern ireland initially, then much of western britain as well, but much of western britain as well, but much of western britain as well, but much of the east will continue to stay dry over night with temperatures dipping into single digits but turning milder out west with the breeze and rain. that rain continues to journey eastwards through tomorrow morning. it could start off dry and bright in the south—east but the rain will reach here into the afternoon. brightening up here into the afternoon. brightening up a little bit for scotland and northern ireland but here we will see sunshine and showers. a warm day to come but not as warm as today because there will be more cloud around, more breeze and outbreaks of rain. as we head into tuesday, we have more frontal systems working in off the atlantic, that will bring showers or longer spells of rain. i think tuesday to sun up will be one of sunshine and showers, some of which could turn out to be heavy

through the afternoon. again, some rumbles of thunder. temperatures as a result in the mid to high teens. it will feel fresher when the showers come along. it stays unsettled for the rest of the new week, low pressure always in charge, and will also start to feed in a cooler north—westerly wind. so it will be one of sunshine and showers for many as we head through the week, and into next weekend some longer spells of rain at times and it will also feel a little cooler thanit it will also feel a little cooler than it has done of late for most of us.
