hello. coming up on this programme... a day of drama in the premier league with some remarkable results among the sides looking to avoid the drop. can pep plan the downfall of real madrid?? we'll look ahead to the tuesday's champions league semi final first leg as manchester city travel to the bernabeu. and australia's michael matthews sprints away to win stage three of the giro d'italia. it's been an astonishing day of action from the teams battling it out to survive the premier league relegation, and we'll start with everton.
1:46 am
they pulled off a remarkable 5—1victory at brighton, who themselves are chasing a european qualification place. the win moves sean dyche*s side out of the relegation zone. it was a superb display of counterattacking football from everton who were 3—0 up after 35 minutes. dwight mcneil and abdoulaye doucoure each scored twice. it means everton are two points above the drop zone with three matches left to play. you got it wrong and sometimes people forget it's not like you got it wrong. it might still be the right tactic. but they have taken it on. they was very open—minded to it. that's really pleasing, because that's the whole point of coaching, that's the whole point of managing. it is to have a format for them to work on and then go deliver it. so the players deserve a lot of credit tonight. they have taken that on. and not only taken it onon but take along with a plum. it's a very pleasing

thing as a coach, and for the players of course. before this game, we were playing fantastic football. fantastic results. and we have to be proud for our work. today, we made a big mistake, because we showed we were not ready to play this game. elswhere, leicester city were beaten 5—3 at fulham, leaving them in big trouble. they ended the day in the bottom three. jamie vardy missed a penalty, but at that stage his side were already 4—1 down. willian and tom cairney scored two each for fulham. leicester — who memorably won the title in 2016 — are now two points adrift of safety. at half time, i think it was 3—0. that's from not being aggressive, not being hungry enough to win the game. to get yourselves out of trouble you need to do the basics well, and be
1:48 am
aggressive and fight. we weren't good enough. and then unfortunately that showed today. the managers were speaking the other day and were saying the big issue from the everton game was defensive disorganisation. they were the words are used. was that a problem again today? if you see the fight goes, what do you think? steve cooper's nottingham forest came out on top in a seven—goal thriller at the city ground against southampton with taiwo awoniyi scoring twice. forest climb out of the bottom three with southampton now on the brink of relegation. the saints need to win all of their remaining three games and hope the results go their way, otherwise they'll be back in the championship for the first time since 2012. we're not safe. could be far from safe. so it's a good step today. that's all it is, is a step. no reason to get carried away. we've got work to do. you saw that in the three games today.
1:49 am
and there will be more of that, i'm sure, coming. so now, straight back to work. and sort of get going again, and start the cycle for the next game, we know where we are and mathematically it is not there, so we are just going to reevaluate and recalibrate and then go for the next one the next weekend. so a day of high drama in the premier league and this is how it looks at the bottom with three games remaining. that defeat for bottom placed southampton at nottingham forest means they looked doomed. forests' victory has catapulted them out of the relegation zone, as did everton*s remarkable win at brighton. and leicester's loss means theyjoin leeds in the bottom three. meanwhile, we now know the four championship teams that will be vying to join burnley and sheffield united in the premier league next season. sunderland sneaked into the final play off place after a dramatic day in the second tier.
1:50 am
millwall started the day in sixth place, knowing that a win would guarantee them a play—off place. they were 3—1 ahead against blackburn but they ended up losing 4—3. meanwhile, sunderland won 3—0 at preston to overtake the south london side. they'll face luton town in the play offs. elsewhere, coventry took fifth and will face middlesborough. this is confirmation of the final table. the play off semi—finals will be played over two legs from sunday to wednesday next week, with the final on saturday 27th may. attention turns to the champions league this week with the first legs of the semi—finals. on tuesday, real madrid take on manchester city at the bernabeu. city were beaten in heartbreaking fashion by the spanish giants in the last four just a year ago. our man out in madrid is olly foster. just over 12 months ago we witnessed one of the most extraordinary matches in the history of

the champions league. that was the second leg between real madrid and manchester city, the same stage they are meeting at now. manchester city were cruising towards the final. just minutes away when rodrigo scored twice for real madrid, benzema scored the winner, real through to the final, winning it for the 14th time, beating liverpool so here we go again. and manchester city and their manager say they are better equipped. i think last season we were prepared well to do it. i'm not a big fan to think about it, positive way, negative way, it's going to help us. of course you have the same managers. 80, 90% of the same players on both sides. so, but completely different games. so, we will see what happens tomorrow. the difference is the second leg is at home.
1:52 am
i think everything is going to decided in manchester. pep saying that his players have to put out of their minds what happened here. erling haaland doesn't have to worry about that. he wasn't a part of the city team, but he is very much a part now, 51 goals and counting as he drives them on towards a possible treble of trophies. the real madrid manager was asked about the norwegian striker. he said they are not trying to just stop him, but the city team as a whole, because he says that when city are on form, they can be sometimes unstoppable. the former england forward chris waddle is part of the bbc team working on the match out in spain, and he thinks despite the age of some of their players, real madrid will pose a real threat to city. people underestimate real madrid. i think yes, they've got a few ageing players, but they are in peak condition.
1:53 am
they manage games. they will slow the game when they need to, they will quicken the game and the need to, to take risks, we can we go you will see real madrid very much can do the same on the counter attack. and in good form at the minutes, really good form. benzema is a presence a player, he goes out and plays the rule, these guys are getting through it. they know how to play football. they don't rely on legs as much. as far as who is favoroite, i wouldn't say who's the favourite at the minute. lionel messi and his world cup—winning argentina have been named sportsman and team of the year at the laureus world sports awards. messi captained argentina, and he scored seven times and won the golden ball as his country won the 2022 world cup in qatar in december. sportswoman of the year went to jamaican sprinter
1:54 am
shelly—ann fraser—pryce. she won the women's 100m world title at the world athletics championships in oregon injuly, becoming the first person to win five golds in an individual track event at the championships. michael matthews pipped mads pedersen to victory on a tougher than expected stage three of the giro d'italia. the race burst into life with a0 kilometres to go, and pedersen was dropped towards the top of the final climb. the dane clawed himself back into contention for the final run into melfi in southern italy, but matthews proved too strong, holding on to claim his first stage victory since last year's tour de france. belgium's remco increased his overall lead by 32 seconds. there was another tight finish in the ipl. kolkata knight ridersjust edged out punjab kings, winning off the last ball of the match.
1:55 am
punjab made 179 for nine with shikhar dharwan hitting 57. varun chakravarthy took three wickets for kolkata and they seemed in control of their run chase, andre russell hitting a quickfire 43, but he was run out off the penultimate ball, leaving rinku singh to hit four off the last ball through to seal a five wicket victory. and last up tonight, we're going back to some more football action, but this time it's a toddler taking centre stage. this is the third round tie in the finnish cup, interrupted after a small child rode onto the pitch on a bicycle. after a round of applause from the crowd, a player helped escort them off the pitch, and play resumed as normal. fair play to that child. taking his moment in the sunshine. you can get all the latest sports news at our website — that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest

of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello. the weather over the next few days will be such that we could see huge variations in conditions over just the space of a few miles. yes, a fairly showery outlook it is through the rest of tuesday and into wednesday. some of the showers where we do see them, though, could come with some particularly potent downpours. now, we will have seen some heavy rain through the night across england and wales especially. that will be edging away, still lingering first light, east anglia and the southeast, but a mild enough start for many. some clearer conditions in the west where temperatures are a little bit lower. but some showers will have continued overnight, southern scotland, northern england, and they could still be there through the morning rush hour, some of them on the heavy side. we will then, after seeing some sunny spells develop quite
1:57 am
widely, showers get going more widely, like a rash developing across the country. they will be hit or miss, but greater chance of missing them, western half of england and wales through the afternoon, as well as western scotland. so some longer sunny spells here, maybe up to around 18 degrees in the east when the sunshine is out. but it's here where we could see some of those showers become thundery through the afternoon. southern and eastern england especially can be a little bit of hail mixed in and some gusty winds. they will fade, though, quite quickly into the first part of the evening, and then some clear skies through eastern areas overnight, leading to temperatures down to around five or six degrees in rural parts, a little bit fresher than the past couple of nights. but further west, more cloud starts to push its way in, and yet more showers. so, it will be an east west split. best of the morning sunshine in eastern areas and the west, some sunny spells, but often lots of cloud, generally more cloud around on wednesday compared with tuesday. and the showers are more widespread, greater chance of seeing some come your way. only a few places will avoid them. temperatures continue to drop just a little bit, but pleasant enough in between those showers and in some of the sunnier moments.
1:58 am
now the area of low pressure responsible for those showers becoming more widespread, drifts a bit further southwards as you go through wednesday night into thursday. and it's around the centre where the showers are most likely to be. and around the centre is where they will be slow moving. notice how theyjust develop as we go through thursday widely across england, wales, southern scotland, and for part northern ireland. but it's across parts of england and wales where they could be at their worst with some thunder mixed in, and as i said, slow moving. so some large rainfall totals possible, to the north of scotland. whilst it feels cooler here, we will see the best of the drier weather. more dry weather, though, to come for all of us to end the week. feeling a bit warmer, too. maybe some late rain on saturday. take care.
