hello, i'm marc edwards, from the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme. heading inter the final — inter milan beat fierce rivals ac milan 2—0 in the first leg of their champions league last—four tie. more disappointment for delhi — capitulation from the capitals as they lose again in the ipl, while the super kings march on. and the weather wreaks havoc on stage five of the giro d'italia. in fact, it was raining cats and dogs. with the world champion given a "ruff" ride. hello and thanks forjoining us. we start in italy where inter milan have taken a huge step towards reaching their

first champions league final in 13 years. they beat city rivals ac milan 2—0 at the san siro to grab the advantage heading into next week's second leg. earlier, i spoke to our european football reporter john bennett for his take on an eventful night. an astonishing start, dzeko with a brilliant side foot volley on just eight minutes. then three minutes later, henrikh mkhitaryan. a parting of the ways of the ac milan defence, he runs through makes it 2—0, and it could easily have been 3—0. the referee gave a penalty. martinez going down, a challenge by simon kjaer. it was then overturned. the var told the referee to go to the screen. he changed his mind and ac milan didn't have a shot on target until the 81st minute, inter hit the post. milan did hit the woodwork

as well, tonali, but they were completely outplayed advantage inter they've got one foot in the final. inter milan will be the hosts if you will in that second leg with both into an ac playing their home games at the san siro. what sort of home advantage will that provide? well, obviously inter fans will have the majority. they will have most of their fans at the stadium and the ac milan fans, there won't be many of them there, but they will have to go some the inter fans to make it as good an atmosphere as it was on wednesday night. it exceeded expectations, to be honest. it broke records in terms of the amount of people who wanted tickets, the amount of money this game has made in terms of ticket revenue, incredible atmosphere. so you think inter will have the advantage with their fans in the stadium. but i think for milan it's all about trying to figure out a way to test this inter defence because they had nothing going forward. they were missing rafael leao, their star attacker. they'll be hoping to get him fit for the second leg because he could make such a difference. so first legs complete in the semi—finals. how do we see them panning out now?
12:48 am
well, i think manchester city will feel very confident going into the second leg against real madrid. of course, you can never write off real madrid in the champions league. we know that on the big occasions they always seem to come good. but surely now with home advantage, second leg, the tie evenly poised at 1—1. but surely they've won 15 of the last 17 games, manchester city. they'll have enough to beat real madrid. as for inter against ac milan, yeah, i think inter of course have to start big favourites. the next goal will be all important, but ijust can't see milan testing this inter defence unless they can get rafael leao fully fit for the second leg. i think a lot depends on whether he plays. meanwhile, on thursday, it'll be a big night for west ham, as the fans continue to dream of their first silverware since 1980. they take on dutch side az alkmaar in the first leg of their europa conference league semi—final at the london stadium, and their manager david moyes admits he'll put on his dancing shoes if his side go all the way and win it.
12:49 am
they said you promised him you would dance if the club were to win the conference league. so you practising your moves? it will be dad's dancing, whatever they are. but let's hope. let's hope that there's an opportunity to try and do that. the other semi—final sees juventus take on serial europa league stalwarts sevilla, and juve*s manager massimiliano allegri insists his side won't be distracted by off field troubles. the italian giants could face renewed sanctions in the league due to financial issues, but allegri says his side are only focused on a tough test against tough opposition. it's a europa league semi—final against the team who've won the europa league four times and twice the uefa cup. therefore, it's a club, a team who is used to playing these kind of matches, an experienced team, a team who never gives up during a game. so tomorrow evening we'll

need a good performance, as we will in the second leg. but for now, it's a focus on tomorrow evening's match. in spain, barcelona captain sergio busquets has confirmed he'll leave the club at the end of the season after 18 years at the camp nou. the former spain midfielder has played 718 matches for barcelona, the third—most in the club's history, winning eight la liga titles, seven copa del reys, seven spanish super cups and three champions leagues. busquets says "it's been an unforgettable journey, reality has exceeded all my dreams." away from football, the delhi capitals remain rooted to the bottom of the indian premier league after a disappointing defeat against the chennai super kings. after choosing to bat, the super kings were only able to make 167 from their 20 overs, but it proved to be more than enough as the capitals fell 28 runs short of their target. they've won just four of their 11 matches this season, whilst the win for the super kings means they're just one point behind

leaders the gujarat titans. there's been another injury setback for tiger woods as he's been ruled out of this year's pga championship with an ankle injury. woods has struggled since a car crash in february 2021 left him with severe leg injuries, playing just three competitive events last year. woods will be hoping to recover in time for the next major, the us open, which starts in mid—june. it was a dramatic wet day of racing at the giro d'italia. britain's mark cavendish crashed sideways across the line to finish fifth on stage 5, while world champion and race favourite remco evenepoel hit the deck twice, the first time because of a stray dog. drew savage has more. mark cavendish began stage five, hoping to add to his 16 victories at the giro d'italia. but it's often the most unpredictable of cycling's grand tours, and today was no exception. it wasn't the wet conditions that caused the first incident. world champion and race favourite remco evenepoel was down, but what had caused it?
12:52 am
replays found the culprit — a stray dog that had run into the peloton. the belgian took a while to get going again, although he appeared to be ok, but more misfortune was to affect him on the run into the finish — clipped by another rider, evenepoel went down again. he'll stay second in the overall standings, but was clearly angry. and there wasn't a happy ending for cavendish either. australia's kaden groves won the sprint finish as the manx missile who'd been knocked off balance slid across the line in fifth place. remarkably, he was soon back on his feet, but race leader leknesund was happy enough he'd finished safely in the bunch and still leads evenepoel by 22 seconds. the nfl have announced their european schedule for the new season, with a number of teams including the new england patriots, the dolphins, the chiefs and the colts heading to foreign shores. the jacksonville jaguars meanwhile will come to england twice, playing at wembley and

the tottenham hotspur stadium. it will be the first time an nfl team has played two regular season games outside the us in the same season. five regular season games will be held in europe for the first time in 2023, with two in germany also being a first. fresh from winning his most recent tournament in france, andy murray has been brought back down to earth with a bump. he was beaten in the opening round of the italian open by fabio fognini, losing in three sets in rome. it was murray's first appearance on the rome clay since 2017, as he targets a return to the french open which begins later this month. elsewhere, andrey rublev and holger rune may be a couple of the best tennis players currently on the atp tour, but they've shown that they perhaps need to work on their other games. before a practice session earlier this week, the pair decided to have a game of rock, paper, scissors but had difficulty coordinating their first two attempts.
12:54 am
third time's a charm, though, and the pair got there in the end! as far as sporting setbacks go, losing your mast in the middle of the atlantic ocean while stuck in a storm takes some beating. that's what happened to team europe in the ocean race. this gives you some idea of the kind of conditions they were dealing with. most importantly, everyone on board is safe and they managed to avoid further damage to the boat. they're currently sailing leg four of the race which is due to end later this month. the best thing happened just about in the hours of darkness at about three or four. and we came across a ship going across the atlantic and we radioed him and asked him if he could give us any fuel. and so in the early morning hours of darkness, the captain got his crew to put canisters of fuel of diesel into the ocean with a light attached and floats. it's made a massive difference.
12:55 am
we were so low on fuel we had to turn everything off on board and we were just floating basically in the atlantic. it's a very good day, relatively. and finally, you may remember us telling you about the story of the cambodian runner bou samnang, who showed great perseverance in completing the women's 5,000 metres at the southeast asian games in dreadful conditions on tuesday. samnang came last but became a global inspiration for her determination, and has now been given a huge reward for her efforts, with the country's prime minister hun sen giving her $10,000 as a reward for her "determination". the cambodian king also praised bou samnan, saying that, "sport is more than winning and losing". you can get all the latest sports news at our website, but from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye.

hello there. it's quite tricky trying to plan your day ahead with the weather at the moment. take, for example, wednesday morning, glorious start in st albans in hertfordshire. but by the middle of the afternoon there were plenty of shower clouds, and many skies overhead look like this, quite threatening at times. in fact, if we take a look at the radar from wednesday, there were quite a widespread bunch of showers that moved in from the west, and some of these turned quite heavy with rumbles of thunder mixed in there as well. in fact, we're not even halfway through the month of may and some counties across england have already seen above average rainfall. the exception, highland scotland, where there's not been that much rain so far this month. but low pressure still dominates the story as we go through thursday. that means further showers to come.
12:57 am
high pressure is trying to build in from the west and it will do so for the first half of the weekend at least. so, for thursday we'll start off with some low cloud around, but largely fine and dry. but it won't be long before the sunshine comes through and we start to see some warmth building and showers turn quite widespread into the afternoon once again. couple that with some low grey cloud temperatures in the far north and east of scotland, disappointing 10—13 degrees. highest values, perhaps around 17 or 18 degrees. dodge the showers. keep the sun. it'll feel relatively pleasant. now, high pressure is building in from the west. but to complicate the story, this little weather front here is going to produce more cloud coming in off the north sea with a cool northeasterly breeze. and we'll see some showers running down through lincolnshire, east anglia, further south and west through the day. so west will be best for the sunshine and the warmth. on friday, we could see temperatures peaking at around 18, possibly 19 degrees. but where that low gray
12:58 am
cloud continues to roll in off the north sea, only highs of around 1a celsius. the high pressure then moves in for the start of the weekend. not a bad start, but already frontal systems pushing in from the northwest will start to bring a change from sunday onwards. so saturday, not a bad day and feeling pleasantly warm. but as we go through into next week, the showers are set to return and it will be just a little bit cooler than it should be for this time of year.
