just after 7 this morning, mick whealan, the boss of the train drivers union, has left, told the bbc his members hadn't seen a pay rise in four years. and the reality is that our people are getting increasingly infuriated. after four years of how you deal and the idea that we are going to give up hundreds and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of millions of pounds of productivity, that takes 140 years to gain for nothing. and a sub rpi increase isn't going to wash. about an hour later, government minister hugh merriman told us that at the moment, a train driver is paid on average for a 35 hour week, just short of £60,000. this pay offer would take them up to £65,000. and in terms of previous years, their pay has gone up by 39% since 2011. that's the highest increase of any employment group. they're both right because they're both answering different questions. so where does that leave us? well, let's take a look at the data on what's happened to the average salary over the last decade. and i'm showing you here the total take home pay of the average worker in the uk. it's now stands at about

or as of march last year. we don't have more recent data. it stood at about £33,000 and the increase looks okay until you start to factor in how much prices have gone up over the same time. and i've done that byjust saying what would have happened to the average salary in 2012 if it had just about kept pace with inflation? and you see, by march last year, the average salary has beaten rising so living standards have increased, but not by much in historical terms. train drivers look a bit different to that firstly. the average salary isn't 33 grand. it's closer to 60, around the same ballpark as a junior doctor. and secondly, their pay has grown a lot faster as well. it's beaten inflation by about £5,000 instead of £1,200. so on average, over the last decade, train drivers have been doing 0k. now they are striking about a range of conditions. but the sticking point for the ones

who are striking is about what's happened since 2019, because about 15 companies' pay deals ran out then and hasn't been restructured. if you work for transport for wales or for eurostar or others, pay has continued to grow and you see the total average has gone up. but for the ones who don't work for them, no pay deal, their pay remains frozen until an offer is accepted. and it's going to stay like that with inflation eating away at all those rises since 2012. until we come up with a deal that does get accepted. very interesting going through the figures and the back story of the disruption we have seen unlikely to tomorrow. now — alice chambers is a big fan of the royal family who travelled to the mall on saturday, hoping to catch a glimpse of king charles on the day of his coronation. instead, she was arrested by police and detained for thirteen hours. she'd been standing near protestors from thejust stop 0il group — and ended up in handcuffs. police say they are reviewing

the case, as aruna iyengar reports. this is alice chambers, an aussie and a fan of the royal family. and here she is at a buckingham palace garden party in 2017. 0n the day of the coronation, she was expecting to see this. she arrived at the mall at seven to get a good spot. the excitement was building, but, two hours later, everything changed. i was just sitting there waiting for the coronation to begin and, next minute, i realised that the police had just swooped in and started grabbing a whole heap of people. this is alice on the mall being detained withjust stop 0 il protesters. they handcuffed me straightaway and then pulled me out of the crowd and put me against a barrier with a whole heap of other protesters. chanting: not my king! not my king! _ last saturday, police made 64 arrests during the coronation,

52 related to concerns that people were going to disrupt the event. we have the right to free speech! alice gave her contact details and showed her id. it took four hours before she got to a police station. i kept trying to explain that ijust wasn't part of this group. i always tried to just think, oh, well, surely there's going to be someone soon that i can talk to that willjust understand that this is all a misunderstanding. and thatjust didn't come, you know. i was detained for 13 hours. whilst all this was going on in london, alice was giving police her dna. her photo and fingerprints were taken. it wasn't until 7:00 that evening that she was interviewed and released. an officer from lincolnshire police made the arrest. the force said...

i mean, it's just been so shocking. i think about all the things i could have done that day, all the parties i could have gone to. but i chose to attend the coronation and i got to see none of it. aruna iyengar, bbc news. now it's time for a look at the weather. i think for most of us it is not looking for bad at all. i think saturday will particularly be a nice day. some warm sunshine across the uk. but today is a bit hit and miss, with a weather front crossing the southeast, central and southern parts of england, for cloud and a bit of rain, and many eastern parts of the country shouted with cloud today.

it is cool on the north sea coast in some spots, only 10 degrees. the best of the weather will be in the sunnier west, in northern ireland, wales, western parts of scotland, in some spots temperatures could nudge up to 20 celsius. this evening, and overnight, it will be dry for most of us, clear skies across many northern and western areas of the uk, and this is where the sunshine will greet us early on saturday morning. some beautiful weather here out towards the west, the coast of wales, lancashire and the lake district. enter scotland, but many central and eastern starts will start cloudy and the sunshine will develop through the morning into the afternoon. by the time we get to the middle of the afternoon, for most of us, it is a case of sunny skies. temperatures of 20 in cardiff, 20 in london, cardiff and glasgow. beautiful day. the uv index is high, the sun is very strong this time of the year. so take it easy outdoors.

the forecast for saturday night into sunday shows a change in our weather, with a cold front approaching the west of the uk that introduces thicker cloud and some breaks of rain. so that sun we will have had on saturday will be replaced by cooler, cloudier more showery conditions in many western and north—western areas. that sunny warm weather will contract was the south—east. it could be as high as 22 degrees in london on sunday, and 20 degrees into parts of yorkshire also. next week, guess what, it looks as though cooler weather will return, so that brief dose of summer like, almost a summer like weather won't last. if we look at the temperatures as we head into monday, tuesday, wednesday, back into the teens. but at least, it looks as though it will be generally dry.
