hello, i'm chetan pathak from the bbc sport centre. coming up on the programme: is this finally their year? manchester city thrash real madrid to reach the champions league final. formula one says it's the "right and responsible thing to do" after cancelling this weekend's grand prix at imola because of severe flooding in italy. novak djokovic suffers his earliest exit at the rome masters since 2013. we start with an emphatic

win for manchester city who've beaten the 1a time winners real madrid 4—0 to reach the final of the european champions league against inter milan. 5—1 on aggregate. it's the one trophy pep guardiola is yet to win at city, in a season where they're chasing a treble. twice beaten at this stage by real. this was finally city's night. our sports editor dan roan was watching at the etihad stadium. this was billed as a battle between the two best club sides in the world but in truth, there were only one team in it. two in the stop the second leg after the 1—1 draw in madrid last week in the first leg but manchester city were way too strong for the champions, the serial winners of this competition, real madrid, running out 4—0 winners, 5—1 on aggregate and it means of course that
2:47 am
manager pep guardiola's side gained compelling, emphatic revenge against the side that knocked them out at this stage of the competition both in 2016 and indeed last year and it means city can look forward to a second champions league final in the last three years. despite the club's wealth, its undoubted experience and talent, so far it has failed to land the trophy that it covets above all others. it came close a couple of seasons ago when they lost to chelsea in the final but one senses, after the way they dismantled madrid, it will be very difficult indeed to stop them and if they can do that against decided that quality, one can only imagine what they might do against into milan who they finished third in serie a and many will argue that city will be firm and hot hybrids to win that convincingly. of course, it's not guaranteed. we'll have to what transpires in turkiye next month
2:48 am
but certainly city will be very confident indeed. they are also in the fa cup final. they are potentially three matches away from sporting immortality and getting a treble that no team in england has won now for almost a quarter of a century. at times, there have been difficulties for city on the field, the charges for rule breaches, the allegations of breaching financial fairplay regulations, the premier league hit them with, but on the field, it's been close to perfect and next month, guardiola's side will have the chance to win the champions league for the very first time and in doing so, seal true legendary club status. premier league striker ivan toney who plays for brentford has been banned from football for eight months after he accepted breaking football association betting rules. he will not be allowed to play again untiljanuary, 202a. our sports correspondent andy swiss has more on the background to this:
2:49 am
it was back at the end of last year that ivan toney was charged with 262 reaches of the fa's betting rules. the breaches were said to have taken place between 2017 and 2021, when he represented four different clubs, scunthorpe, wigan, peterborough and brentford where he has gone on to enjoy so much success this season. the charges revolved around the fa's betting rules which ban players from betting on games or sharing privileged information for the purposes of betting. the fa say they withdrew 30 of their initial charges but ivan toney admitted to the remaining 232 charges and as you say, he's been suspended from all football and football related activity for eight months. formula i has said the cancellation of the emilia romagna grand prix was "the right and responsible thing to do". major flooding in the area has led to at least eight deaths and thousands of people having to abandon their homes. it was concluded that the event could not proceed safely in imola. mercedes*s lewis hamilton said on social media that his "thoughts were with those affected by the tragedy

and with the amazing emergency services working on the ground." inga stracke is a formula i journalist who was on her way to italy when the news broke. this is a very early cancellation. we are used to, from previous decades, it seems like that was left very late last minute. yesterday, it was evacuated, some of my colleagues had to leave and others were already there, it looked really dangerous and devastating. around midnight, i got an email from formula one fia saying, "today, do not approach the racetrack, don't come, stay in your hotels if you are already in emilia romagna." at the same time, we also got news from our italian colleagues and friends that the water levels were rising, that they have fatalities there, of course, ifeel very sorry and my sympathy goes to all the families and those affected, and then formula one

cancelled, they are saying we cannot be a burden on anybody who is looking after the safety of the people in that area. we've had bad weather, we've had typhoons, which had earthquakes in japan which led to postponements or cancellation of qualifying. i'm not sure if we had the whole race, the whole weekend cancelled because of that. it is a very packed schedule and i'm looking at my calendar now, if i look at it, we originally had a 2a—race record calendar this year, reduced to 23, still a record, because we lost china in april. now we have a couple of, imola was going to be the first of a triple header. imola, monaco and barcelona, and one week's break in canada. i've heard a rumour that we might go to imola after canada, end ofjune but it's only a rumour and i've heard another one, it could be the first week of august
2:52 am
but that is the summer break, a mandatory summer break in formula one or the families of the teams. i heard another rumour it could be in september right after monza, the second week of september and another story that it could be at the end of the formula one contract with imola in *25, it could be added for *26. more reaction to the cancellation of that race, in emilia romagna, on the bbc sport website. golf's second major of the year the us pga championship gets underway on thursday. it's taking place at oak hill country club in rochester, upstate new york. rory mcilroy has won the event twice before and remains one of the favourites despite missing the cut at the masters last month. it's not really the performance in augusta that it's hard to get over, it's the mental aspect and the deflation of it the right place to start going forward again, i guess. i expect to go out there and if i can execute the way i feel like i can, i still believe that i'm one of the best players in the world and i can

produce good golf to have a chance of winning this week. novak djokovic's preparations for the start of next week's french open suffered a setback earlier. he's been beaten in the quarterfinals of the rome masters, his earliest exit at the tournament in 10 years. the top seed, who turns 36 next week, beaten in three sets by 20—year—old holger rune — a rising star in the men's game who fears no—one. in the italian capital but lost 6-2 4-6 6-2. rune will play norwegian fourth seed casper ruud in the semi—final. olympic gold medallist katie taylor says she's building up to the greatest night of her career as she prepares to fight professionally in her home country of ireland for the first time. taylor faces england's chantelle cameron on saturday night as she attempts to become a two—weight undisputed world champion. this is absolutely incredible. this could possibly be
2:54 am
the greatest moment in my boxing back to this nation, for a nation who loves their sport, for such a small nation, we are very good at boxing. and to have a chance of actually bringing big—time boxing back matters, notjust to have the best champion as well, two champions going head—to—head. this doesn't happen too often in boxing and i think it's one of the best fights in boxing right now. i love my sport, i'm so passionate about it. i'm not tired of getting up in the mornings yet, or getting punched in the face yet. i do love my sport and i don't feel like i'm slowing down as well. i think there is going to be a lot of big nights here for me in the future but i take one fight at a time and right now my focus is on saturday night and it's going to be a big challenge, a big test and i can't wait for this challenge. it's been confirmed that britain's tao geoghegan hart sustained a fractured hip and will require surgery after crashing out of stage ii of the giro d'italia.
2:55 am
it was at the midpoint of the course when the incident took place. it's not known what caused the crash, but both primo roglic and geraint thomas also hit the ground. gaygen hart was stretchered into an ambulance and reportedly was in some distress. emirates rider pascal ackermann came out on top in a franctic finishjust ahead of jonathan milan in second emirates rider pascal ackermann came out on top in a franctic finishjust ahead of jonathan milan in second and mark cavendish in third. thomas says he was lucky after his mid stage tumble and retains the pinkjersey for overall race leader. that is all from me. more reaction over on the bbc sport website, you can see all the results there as well from the rome masters tennis where i can tell you iga swiatek, the world number one has had to retire from the quarterfinal against elena rybakina, the wimbledon. it was once at all and two games all in the deciding set and swiatek having to retire

through injury. but from me and the team, that is all from now. goodbye. hello there. there's going to be some more warm sunshine at times on thursday. could be one of two showers breaking out, mind you. and later in the day, we're going to find this cloud coming in from the atlantic to bring a little rain into the northwest. right now, though, we've got this stream of cloud moving down from the north. a lot of it, though. this quite thin, high, cloud, but with more cloud around, temperatures will start at nearer nine or ten degrees early on thursday. and from that cloud, there could still be a little light rain or drizzle in scotland.
2:57 am
now eastern parts of scotland should become drier and brighter. and in northern ireland there'll be some sunshine in the morning before that band of cloud brings that line of rain. for england and wales, there'll be some sunny spells developing, but as it warms up a bit we could trigger a few showers through the midlands, some eastern parts of england. further west it's likely to stay dry, and we may well find the highest temperature around worcestershire and herefordshire, but it's still only 20 degrees. nothing to get too excited. we normally see temperatures a bit higher than that at this time of the year. and generally those numbers are going to be 17 or 18 celsius, once again, like wednesday. there is that weather front though, bringing that line of rain into scotland and northern ireland that's going to then push its way down into england and wales on friday. and that cloud may start to thicken up and bring with it a few more showers. and those could be a little heavy as they push into the midlands towards the south east of england. following on from that, we've got more sunshine to come for scotland and northern ireland, though the cloud will build up a bit and spread out. but temperatures are likely to reach 18 degrees in glasgow, the same as the temperature there in plymouth, and it'll be warm in the sunshine.
2:58 am
for scotland and northern ireland as we head into the weekend though, there's likely to be more cloud coming in from the atlantic, a little bit more breezy in northern scotland. high pressure will keep it dry, though, for england and wales and there'll be a lot of sunshine around as well. but more cloud for scotland and northern ireland, just about thick enough to give a little light rain or drizzle here and there. and we've still got temperatures of 18 degrees in the central belt. in the sunshine for england and wales, temperatures could hit 20 or 21 celsius. and there's more sunshine to come for england and wales on sunday. more of a breeze in the southeast. should actually brighten up with some sunshine in south—east scotland. other parts of scotland and northern ireland again seeing more cloud, not much rain coming from that cloud. and where you have the sunshine, it'll be warm again.
