celebrations for rome, who reach the final of the europe league. no french open for nadal — rafa rules himself out of roland garros, and says he plans to retire next year. and we hear from katie taylor, who says she'll make history on saturday night as the irish boxer prepares to fight in front of her home crowd for the first time. welcome along. thank you forjoining us. there'll be three italian teams in europe's three major european finals this season and jose mourinho looks to be doing it again. he's on the brink of another major european trophy, his roma side into the final of the europa league after a goalless draw at bayer leverkusen ensured a 1—0 win on aggregate. and awaiting them in the final will be the six—time winners sevilla, who have an incredible record in this completion.
2:46 am
extra time was needed againstjuventus with sevilla then scoring two goals to give them a 2—1win on the night, 3—2 on aggregate. the final is at the end of this month. west ham united are into their first european final in nearly 50 years after beating dutch side az alkmaar in the europa conference league. having won the first leg at the london stadium 2—1, west ham scored a stoppage time winner to go through 3—1 overall. but their celebrations were marred by an incident where west ham players confronted alkmaar fans, who appeared to attack an area in which friends and family were watching. it will be italian side fiorentina — you can see there — that they will meet in the final after they beat basel 3—1 after extra time. 4—3 on aggregate. the final is in prague on the 7th ofjune. on the tenth ofjune, the third italian team

i was talking about — inter milan, of course — play manchester city in the champions league final. well, it's over 20 years since newcastle united played in the european champions league but they are closing in on a place in next season's competition after a 4—1 win over brighton in the english premier league. and what a job eddie howe has done. the club were fighting relegation when he took over last season. callum wilson among their goal scorers at st james' park. it was bruno guimaraes who scored the fourth. newcastle have two games remaining against leicester and chelsea. got to credit the players on what they've given physically today cos to maintain that rhythm throughout the game is not easy against a top—quality team, especially in possession, they take a lot of risks, but they benefit from those risks at times and we were hoping for a mistake, but can't fault the players — they've given everything again. reporter: two to play - the champions league i is so close. yeah, it is, but it's so far away as well. so, um, we'll enjoy tonight. let's just focus on how we've played. we'll enjoy it but make sure
2:48 am
we're really focused on our next match against leicester. so, newcastle united in third. if they win just one of their remaining two matches, they are guaranteed a top four finish and champions league football. manchester united in fourth need two wins from their final three games to do the same. liverpool have to win their last two games and need one or both of the uniteds above them to slip up if they're to qualify for the champions league. brighton remain sixth after their defeat but are still well positioned for european football next season. rafael nadal has pulled out of this year's french open due to his lack of fitness following a hip injury and says he plans to retire at the end of next year. after much speculation, the iii—time champion at roland garros made the announcement at a press conference earlier, ahead of the tournament which starts at the end of the month. it's 19 years since nadal, who's 36, missed a french open. he's the most successful player, of course, in the championships history but he's not played since the australian open at the start of the year. he says he's focused on one last farewell season in 2024,

if his body allows. my idea and my motivation is try to enjoy and try to say goodbye of all the tournaments that i — have been important for me in my tennis career during this year and just try to enjoy that — that, being competitive and enjoying enjoying being on court — something that today is not possible now, so i really believe that if i keep going now, i will not be able to make that happen. with more on this, we've been speaking to our tennis correspondent, russell fuller. the latest in a series of fairly nasty injuries, some of them chronic injuries, which he says have just left him in too much pain over the course of the last two or three years but specifically, this hip problem which initially was diagnosed as a problem that would probably require 6—8 weeks on the sidelines butjust continued to confound the medics and he pulled out of his favourite clay court tournament in places like monte carlo and barcelona and then rome and then madrid
2:50 am
and now also the french open and he's not going to play at wimbledon. he does hope to be back on court later this year. the goal, really, is to have a break, hope this hip problem can resolve itself for his own quality of life and personal happiness but also, so that he can be competitive again and play as full a season as possible in 2024, and it sounds very much as if that is going to be a farewell tour. james anderson says he aims to play in three of the five ashes tests, which start next month. england's leading test wicket taker is recovering from a minor groin injury and won't take any risks to make the warm—up match against ireland at the beginning ofjune. he'll also manage his fitness over the series against australia with the intense schedule expected to be challenging for all the bowlers. the way the test matches come thick and fast, it's very difficult to —
2:51 am
obviously, you want to perform at 100% in each game. you don't have much time to recover and then get ready for the next one, so it is difficult. obvious, pat cummins is their captain, so he'll be trying to get through five test matches but again, as i said, it is tough and i think from our side, you ask most of our bowlers, especially myself and stuart, who are slightly older than the rest, you know, for me, three out of five would, i think, be a success for me. reporter: i do wonder if you visualise towards | the end of the ashes series and being at the oval, winning back the ashes, and thinking, "that's a brilliant career. "i can sort of think full stop." yeah, well... i mean, i look back now and think that i'm really proud of my career and what i've achieved but also, ifeel like — at the moment, i don't see it — i don't see the end in sightjust because of how i feel when i've been playing for lancashire this year, the way i've bowled, i feel like i've still
2:52 am
got a lot to offer. i'm sure there will come a point when i think, "right, that's it, that's enough," but i'm not there yet so i'm just waiting for that moment. i remember hearing eoin morgan talking about it and he just woke up one day and thought, "that's it". and i'm sure the same will happen to me but obviously, i don't want to just like drag it out for as long as possible and — but at the same time, if i feel like i've got something to offer english cricket, then i'll keep going. jimmy anderson talking tojoe wilson. boxer katie taylor says she plans to make history on saturday night when she faces chantelle cameron in her home country of ireland for the first time. taylor has had to move up from lightweight to light welterweight to take on the undisputed champion but speaking at the pre—fight press conference on thursday, taylor insists she's confident she can win. ade adedoyin watched it all unfold. well, the press conference

passed pretty much without incident. none of the shenanigans that you sometimes see in the lead—up to a major fight — no pushing or shoving, no name—calling. both women were very, very respectful because they understand the magnitude of saturday night's fight. this is a huge occasion — the first major bout in dublin for some seven years. it's also katie taylor's first bout here in the city as a professional and when you think about what she's accomplished in her career — won titles in multiple weight classes, she's been a trailblazer for the sport, breaking down barriers for women's boxing. she the a lightweight champion, the undisputed champion at that division. she's moving up a weight class to challenge chantelle cameron, so attempting to make history on saturday night. despite the fact that it's cameron's belt on the line, it's katie taylor's name that appears first in all the promotion — to give you a sense of what a big moment it is in her career. let's hear now what both of women had to say. yeah, this is absolutely incredible. we're only two days away, yeah,
2:54 am
from making my homecoming fight. i think one of the things that i wanted to achieve when i turned pro six years ago was a fight here at home and this is a nation who love their sport, who love their boxing and for a very, very small nation, we are very good at it as well so it's amazing to be bringing big time boxing back to the nation again, where it belongs, and this a unintlligible fight is undisputed champion versus undisputed champion. this is a very. —— this is a very, very special fight — one of the biggest fights in boxing, i believe. i have a chance to make history again saturday evening and nobody's gonna take that away from me. anyone in this division - or around about this division is always wanting to fightl katie taylor because she's pound for pound best i and if you're in boxing, you want to challenge the best as well, especially if you're - a champion it's — you've got to set yourself them sort i of goals and try achieve yourl own greatness, so i've always wanted this fight, i didn't think it would happen, i but i'm here now. well, this homecoming on saturday for katie taylor should've been against amanda serrano after their epic bout in madison square garden last year. serrano was injured, so up stepped chantelle cameron, and this could well end up being a much tougher fight for katie taylor and it could also have been a night

that defines her career. britain's geraint thomas is still in the leader's pink jersey at the giro d'italia. the ineos grenadiers rider finished in the main bunch on stage 12. he remains two seconds ahead of the slovenian primoz roglic. there was a three—way battle from a breakaway group for the stage win. germany's nico denz came out on top. head over to the bbc sport website, where you can follow round one of the pga championship at oak hill in new york state. the testing course proved too much for world number one and masters championjon rahm, who carded a 6—over 76. but that's all from me and the team for now, goodbye. hello there. here at home, our weather is quite quiet but in italy, the flood situation will be ongoing. there's more cool, wet and windy weather developing in southern parts of europe
2:56 am
and this is the rainfall accumulation in the next few days. heavy rain for corsica and sardinia. the heaviest of the rain this time is more for the north—west of italy, and that could lead to some further flooding. away from that thickening cloud, we've had this band of cloud on that weather front producing just a little bit of rain. that's heading its way down into england and wales in some areas. clearer skies following to scotland and northern ireland. and first thing in the morning, temperatures could be as low as about five degrees. we will have more sunshine, though, on friday for scotland and northern ireland, although it may well cloud over a little more in the afternoon. some areas of cloud for england and wales producing this rain and drizzle. it will tend to peter out but as it brightens up, will trigger a few showers all the way from yorkshire into the west midlands and the west country as well. but there will be some warm spells of sunshine around on friday and in light winds, those temperatures are going to be very similar to what we had on thursday. it could actually be a bit warmer in scotland, particularly across the east with more sunshine. now, this developing area

of low pressure is storm nino and that's going to bring all that wet weather into central parts of the mediterranean. here at home, it's high pressure that's tending to dominate, although there is this strip of cloud coming in from the atlantic and it looks like it could be quite cloudy for scotland and northern ireland. probably dry. most of that cloud is going to be quite high cloud. and away from here, england and wales seeing the lion's share of the sunshine. a bit of a breeze picking up perhaps in the far south—east of england but warm in the sunshine — temperatures hitting 20 or 21 celsius, particularly in the west, holding at 16 or 17 for scotland and northern ireland. and into the second half of the weekend, we've still got a lot of cloud for scotland and northern ireland. a little or no rain around. it could well brighten up and warm up in the south—east of scotland but again, sunshine for england and wales, some fair weather cloud and temperatures reaching 20 or 21 celsius. a little bit cooler perhaps around some of those north sea coasts. so, we've got some decent weather on the whole for this weekend and not a great deal of change into next week. many places still dry with some

sunshine, more cloud in the far north, and this is where we're more likely to have some rain at times.
