4:41 pm
top of the picture, that is the cenotaph. that area is where downing street is. just to the left of there. we cannot actually see the gates of downing street, but whitehall is closed by police as they deal with this incident. no other real detail apart from that one line, a car has collided with a front gates of downing street. you will know, in terms of your familiarity with downing street, the whole area, the entrance into downing street, huge metal gates with heavy security, that has been in place for a number of years. he used to be able to walk down downing street, but not for over a decade. a huge metal gate and security. a car colliding into that gate, no other word in terms of the nature of what has happened. but, that's clearly being investigated as we speak. i am
4:42 pm
watching these life pictures as you are from the scene, as details coming to me, and certainly, the car is driven into the gates, that is what the police say. what we, of course, do not know is, in terms of the nature of that, and if the police are still dealing with what the cause of that, certainly lots of camera crews heading down there, lots ofjournalists asking questions. we are across that story, thatis questions. we are across that story, that is coming to us from police, you can see those police vehicles, both sides of the cenotaph, with the road blocked off, the police vehicles, just as such police operation continuing. you cannot, i do not think, as i squint at these pictures, myself, trying to see if i
4:43 pm
can actually see the car itself... that one line from the police, a car has gone into the gate, and as i am telling you that, i am also hearing that one arrest has just been made. so, that operation is clearly ongoing. the facts coming on as we speak to you. you can see that very busy area of central london... that is, in terms of the geography of what you're looking at, whitehall. just where the cenotaph is, in the foreground, and then using the statue further down. that is where the entrance to downing street is, thatis the entrance to downing street is, that is where the security gate is, that is where the security gate is, that heavy, iron security gate. that is where the car has gone into. but, we're hearing that one arrest has been and no injuries after the car collided with the gate. now, just to
4:44 pm
the foreground of those pictures that you are seeing, to the right, is where the houses of parliament are situated. so, it gives you an idea as to the sort of geography of that whole area. of course, heavy security in that central district of westminster, between downing street and westminster and the houses of parliament. the regular shuttling between the prime ministeroffice and residence to the houses of parliament. and of course, down whitehall. all the government office buildings. clearly, it is downing street that is the centre of what has happened here, it is very much in it's early stages, early minutes, but no injuries. worth repeating, no injuries, but one arrest. that is after a car has collided with a gate there, the gate at downing street.
4:45 pm
those are the early details, the first details coming to us from the police itself. of course, the nature of what we are dealing with, we do not know, but it is clearly a security alert, and hence, the nature of the closure of whitehall. you can see the police cars both in the foreground and towards the top of the picture. we have a reporter in the newsroom pulling together the strands of what we are learning. our colleagues are making calls here to find out more. is there anything that you can tell us currently? figs that you can tell us currently? as ou sa , that you can tell us currently? is you say, it has that you can tell us currently? sis you say, it has only broken in the last few minutes that a met police spokesman has confirmed, as you have been saying, that a car collided with the front gate of downing street. downing street have also confirmed that it happened, but they have no more information at the moment. they are, of course, looking
4:46 pm
into what has happened. you can see on the pictures, there is a police cordoned there in westminster, at the moment, of course, as more information comes in. a car driven in... we do not know what this is about. we should make that clear, we do not have any information on why it has happened, how it has happened, other than the police have confirmed that a car is driven into the front gate of downing street. as you can imagine, in those pictures, the whole of the area has been closed off by police. there are plenty of pictures of police activity at the scene, and on social media, as you can imagine. and, as you are talking to us, more detailed coming in of a car, a white car, apparently, pictured in front of the gates. the boot open, that may be part of the police operation itself. certainly, on social media, that
4:47 pm
picture is circulating, of a white vehicle pictured in front of the gates with the boot currently up. that operation is still going on. our political correspondent is there on the ground in whitehall, i am going to cross to him. nick, tell us what you can tell us about what we are dealing with and what we are seeing. are dealing with and what we are seeina. , . , are dealing with and what we are seeina. , ., , ., are dealing with and what we are seeinu. , . , ., , are dealing with and what we are seein. , ., ,., ,., are dealing with and what we are seeinu. , . ,., ,., seeing. details of this are coming throu~h seeing. details of this are coming through slowly. _ seeing. details of this are coming through slowly. i _ seeing. details of this are coming through slowly. i will— seeing. details of this are coming through slowly. i will pop - seeing. details of this are coming through slowly. i will pop out - seeing. details of this are coming through slowly. i will pop out of. through slowly. i will pop out of the way — through slowly. i will pop out of the way so you can see the scene behind _ the way so you can see the scene behind us — the way so you can see the scene behind us. about 50 metres from where _ behind us. about 50 metres from where we — behind us. about 50 metres from where we are is that white car with the boot_ where we are is that white car with the boot open. there have been police _ the boot open. there have been police sniffer dogs going through it in the _ police sniffer dogs going through it in the last— police sniffer dogs going through it in the last few minutes. police areh't— in the last few minutes. police aren't saying anything to us here officially — aren't saying anything to us here officially on the scene. i have talked — officially on the scene. i have talked to _ officially on the scene. i have talked to a couple of people who are in downing _ talked to a couple of people who are in downing street at the moment. they have — in downing street at the moment. they have been told to stay indoors, not they have been told to stay indoors, hot to _ they have been told to stay indoors, hot to leave — they have been told to stay indoors, not to leave their office. it sounds like they've — not to leave their office. it sounds like they've been told that a vehicle _ like they've been told that a vehicle has smashed into the gates. we can_ vehicle has smashed into the gates.

4:49 pm
your screen, the passenger car we are talking about. the white car that you can see very clearly is pointing towards the gates of downing street, that is the entrance to downing street. that entrance is, it has that security gate, and that is what the car seems to have gone into. as nick was describing, the boot is open. the police operation is still very much ongoing. nick? i have just had an update from the met police over the last few seconds. let me just read this to you. around 1620, a car collided with the gates of downing street on whitehall. armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving. this statement has just damage and dangerous driving. this statement hasjust come damage and dangerous driving. this statement has just come in from the met police. it adds, there are no reports of any injuries at the moment and inquiries are ongoing.
4:50 pm
so, in the past minute, literally, the last minute. the met have confirmed someone has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving, that happened about half an hour ago, just up from the pictures you are looking at on downing street where the prime minister, we think he is service afternoon. staff have been told to stay in a building just now while the police search that car, and while there are inquiries continue. your camera is giving a very clear shots of the security operation, it is a very security operation, as you would expect. interesting, there is a to us from the police. nick, you know this area inside out in terms of your political work, you go to and from the house of commons to number ten, and from the house of commons to numberten, but and from the house of commons to number ten, but for those people watching this, looking in from all around the world, just explain a little of the geography of this
4:51 pm
whole area of whitehall. it is so busy when it comes to british politics. busy when it comes to british olitics. . busy when it comes to british olitics. , ., , busy when it comes to british olitics. , . , , politics. yes. i mean, this is the heart of british _ politics. yes. i mean, this is the heart of british politics. - politics. yes. i mean, this is the heart of british politics. it - politics. yes. i mean, this is the heart of british politics. it might sound like i am moving at the moment, we havejust been sound like i am moving at the moment, we have just been allowed a bit closer to downing street. we are just setting up a shot of that at the moment which might give a better view of the car that we have all been looking at for the past few minutes. we are right in the heart of downing street... right in the heart of whitehall, right in the heart of whitehall, right in the heart of whitehall, right in the heart of westminster. downing street is about halfway down the street of whitehall. it is quite heavily protected by significant barriers at the gates, certainly, when you try and get into downing street, it can take quite a long time. it appears that this car has not got any further than the barriers at the entrance to the street. as i say, there has not been much information so far about what exactly has gone
4:52 pm
on here. we have seen some images of the car collide, having collided with the gates. images of someone being led away from that team, but in the last few minutes, the information that is coming through from the metropolitan police is that armed officers did arrest a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving. no reports of any injuries at the moment, inquiries are ongoing. we are of course trying to find out a bit more about what happened, and how this happened, trying to get some eye witnesses to talk to us. what i can tell you from chatting to various people around us, in the last few minutes, on whatsapp and other places, a lot of people have been told to stay in their buildings. that mightjust be a precaution given the armed officers on the scene, and as you can see in front of me, there are still
4:53 pm
searches taking place. there have been sniffer dogs which have been on the scene looking into that car. it does look to me at the moment, matthew, like a police operation here is starting to wind down. we were about 50 metres away from downing street a few minutes ago, we are now, as you can see, about ten metres away from a car. that would suggest police are pretty comfortable that they have this under control. the next question will be, what actually happened earlier? ., ., . ., earlier? your camera crew are giving us a really crystal _ earlier? your camera crew are giving us a really crystal clear _ earlier? your camera crew are giving us a really crystal clear picture, - us a really crystal clear picture, right up close of the car. you can see the nose pointing towards those heavy security gates that i was describing a little earlier. and, next, you mentioned the prime minister... you think, do you, that rishi sunak is in downing street as we speak? hat rishi sunak is in downing street as we seak? ., . ., rishi sunak is in downing street as we seak? ., . . ., rishi sunak is in downing street as we seak? ., . ., ., , we speak? not certain, that is the honest answer. _ we speak? not certain, that is the honest answer. we _ we speak? not certain, that is the honest answer. we have - we speak? not certain, that is the honest answer. we have not - we speak? not certain, that is the honest answer. we have not had l we speak? not certain, that is the| honest answer. we have not had it confirmed but he does normally work

during the week. parliament come in the last few minutes, they will break up for a week pass holiday. it is quite possible that he has left london. i do know that a lot of staff are in downing street and that the cabinet office, which is the adjacent building, they are in their offices this afternoon, and have been told to stay inside at moment, because of this police operation. i am going to ask a few people if the prime minister is in downing street, i will let you know as soon as i know anything. i will let you know as soon as i know anything-— i will let you know as soon as i know anything. nick, stay there. i am auoin know anything. nick, stay there. i am going to _ know anything. nick, stay there. i am going to put — know anything. nick, stay there. i am going to put onto _ know anything. nick, stay there. i am going to put onto the - know anything. nick, stay there. i am going to put onto the screen l know anything. nick, stay there. i. am going to put onto the screen the first images of the impact of the car. we are going to put that onto the screen in the next few seconds. ijust the screen in the next few seconds. i just want to pause your description of what is going on and actually show viewers the moment that this car, that you currently see, actually hit those gates in
4:55 pm
downing street. let's put that on the screen in a moment. there you saw the car move from right to left, that white car going across whitehall. we will play that to you again, but that car, going across whitehall from the right to the left. viewing that for the first time, not going at a huge speed, but certainly aimed quite deliberately directly at the gates of number ten. let me try to put that back on the screen, give you another chance to see it, those are the live shots from the street level where the car has ended up, but let's try and show you that again, as we put those pictures on, keep an eye on the right—hand side of your screen in the middle, you will see that white car cross whitehall, heading towards
4:56 pm
downing street, heading towards the gates where we see it has ended up. have a look at this, keep your eye on the right—hand side of that screen. and, we will show you those pictures in the next few seconds. apologies, i was expecting to see that comeback. it has not. we will attempt to put that on the screen again. the news that nick was telling me, let me repeat that, armed officers arresting a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving. that clip has been lined up again. let me press play, keep your eyes on the middle, there it is, the white car crossing by the cenotaph heading towards, slowing down in the moments before. there it is, aimed directly at... trying to enter downing street. that heavy wrought iron
4:57 pm
metal gate with security bullard is. there are several layers of security there are downing street as well as there are downing street as well as the armed officers, there it goes one more time, just showing you in terms of that attempt to actually drive either into the gates or into downing street. behind us, we don't know anything about the man who has been arrested. the details that we do know are that one man has been arrested, there are no injuries, but one man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving. let's bring nick backin dangerous driving. let's bring nick back in as we continue to look at those images. nick, i don't know if you have been able to see what we are seeing, but certainly, not at high speed, but very deliberately,

the car is very aimed at the gates of downing street.— the car is very aimed at the gates of downing street. yes, what i can tell ou of downing street. yes, what i can tell you from _ of downing street. yes, what i can tell you from going _ of downing street. yes, what i can tell you from going in _ of downing street. yes, what i can tell you from going in those - of downing street. yes, what i can tell you from going in those gates| tell you from going in those gates quite _ tell you from going in those gates quite a _ tell you from going in those gates quite a few times is that there are essentially— quite a few times is that there are essentially three layers of security, the outer layer, which you can seem — security, the outer layer, which you can see- - -— can see... then, there is a big iron ate, can see... then, there is a big iron gate. then — can see... then, there is a big iron gate, then another— can see... then, there is a big iron gate, then another barrier - can see... then, there is a big iron gate, then another barrier you - can see... then, there is a big iron| gate, then another barrier you have to cross when you get in. so, it looks like this car has managed to get through the first barrier, it is open quite a lot during the day when our car going through, but then, there is another level of security after that, the big black gates you have been seeing over the last few minutes, that is where the car has crashed into. it is worth mentioning, this is a really busy part of central london. closing of whitehall is quite a big deal. it is a part of the city which is, obviously, tsunamis foiled six —— ——

synonymous with politics. we are seeing —— we have seen various protests to do with the covert action, international politics. it is not uncommon to protests. what is uncommon is to see the sort of thing we are seeing on our screens right now, the car that is crashed into the front gates of downing street. i cannot recall seeing a car get through that first barrier in a situation like this. we do not have any update on the situation in the street. what i do know from speaking to people over the last half hour or so is that staff were told for a while to stay indoors. it does look to be at the top of the street near the cabinet office, that is the next building up, that some people have emerged from the front door there. that suggests the police are comfortable that they have this scene under control. you can actually see that they have closed
5:00 pm
the boot of that car which had crashed into the front gate at downing street. no updates from the police at the sea as to what happened there, they are not saying anything at the moment, all we know is that statement that we have been reading out from the metropolitan police, that one person has been arrested by armed officers on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous as they continue to look at the scene there in whitehall, of course, decades ago, that was the scene where mortar bombs where logged into the gardens of number ten, and there was so much that was transformed and changed around basic security around the offices of the prime minister. yes, back in the day, and prime minister is past, anybody could go into that street and have a look at the famous front door of number ten. it's not like that now. there's two
