ahead of the women's player squad ahead of the women's world cup. this is the scene, can i show you the scene? well, this is the announcement that you have got on the screen, the goalkeepers, midfielders, forwards, mary earps, the number one goalie for england, performing amazingly during the euros. so can i show you the scene live in sutton coldfield? here it is, this is where the announcement will formally be made, hoping to see the couch, sarina wiegman do that. she has been in charge of the lionesses since september 2021. let's crossover to hugh ferris, who has been following the story and can fill us in on all the challenges and what those names now mean in terms
2:01 pm
of england's chances later in the summer. i saw you of england's chances later in the summer. isaw you peering of england's chances later in the summer. i saw you peering down at those names, for all of us, we are trying to catch up, what are your initial thoughts on that squad? my initial thoughts on that squad? ij*i initial thoughts on that squad? m: initial thoughts on that squad? m; initial thoughts are very simple, they are released at the end of a video, so you have to be able to pause at the right moment to be able to get the screen that you have just been showing everybody. yes, this is the thing that everybody does to buy themselves some time as we digest themselves some time as we digest the news that has just broken, that sarina wiegman has named her 23 player squad for the women's world cup. no surprises with the three goalkeepers chosen by wiegman, after a potential third choice made himself unavailable for the competition. not too many surprises in defence, we knew that leah williamson, the captain, was missing out through injury. minor confusion
2:02 pm
might have surrounded millie bright and lucy bronze, knee injuries towards the end of the season that required surgery, that is obviously not prevented them from making the squad. two vital senior players, certainly one that show experience at a time when england are missing some experienced due to those injuries, that leah williamson is one of, and we will come to the others as we go through the squad. laura coombs, jordan nobbs is back in the squad after missing the euros because of a serious knee injury. georgia stanway, ella toone, katie zelem, keira walsh, she was on the long list for the euros and did not make it, but she has made the squad. and the forwards, no beth mead because of acl injury, and there was a thought after she said she was ahead of schedule after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, that she might be making the squad, just perhaps performing in the final stages of the competition, but
2:03 pm
sarina wiegman has decided that is too much of a risk, because it would be eight months without football were she to play at the world cup after that injury. in his stead, rachel daly, beth england, lauren hemp, laurenjames, chloe kelly, katie robinson and alessia russo are the forwards. we will come to, i imagine, discussing the relative depth that sarina wiegman is able to call upon, given there was that those injuries have affected the squad, but it is interesting to note, in the place of beth mead, the fact that she is not there, funnily enough, she plays in the position that england are perhaps at their strongest, and the emergence of laurenjames in particular, there is of course lauren hemp and chloe kelly, who scored the winner in the euros final over germany. very strong in there was wide forward positions. there will be an interesting test to see you might start as the number nine in between those two, alessia russo currently in possession of the church. rachel

2:10 pm
earlier, half the number of people were watching, 178 million viewers. but if we go back even further, to 2005, you'll see that the number of people watching was less than three million. well, the final that year, in 2005, was held in blackburn in england to a crowd of around 21,000 people. compare that to last year, when 90,000 people packed wembley to watch the women play, and plenty more people missed out on tickets too. 2005, though, was a key year for women's football, and it's widely seen as the spark for that increased popularity, which led to a surge in the number of girls playing grassroots football. and by 2020 the football association said 3.a million women and girls were playing football. in england, it's the number one played sport by women in the uk, and we know that scenes like this have only helped to increase its popularity.

iamjoined by i am joined by the former captain of the england women's national team, faye white, great that you are with us this afternoon, we have all been waiting to see what the squad was going to look like, no confirmation yet, the last time i looked, who would be leading the team out onto the pitch, what are your thoughts initially? yeah, no, ithink most the pitch, what are your thoughts initially? yeah, no, i think most of the players that we thought would be in the squad are, maybe a couple of tweaks, steph houghton, the media bringing that up more, but that wasn't going to be the case, and millie bright, she will still have to show fitness when they meet up incoming games, nay behind closed doors. but it is quite balanced, the question is obviously who would be
2:12 pm
the captain, may be lucy bronze millie bright, because they have beenin millie bright, because they have been in the past. the fact that we are covering this, this is part of the news rundown today, when you were captain, back in your day, leading england out and playing with arsenal as well, i mean, the amount of coverage, did you have this amount of coverage? how do you feel when you see the attention at the women's game is now getting? attention at the women's game is now caettin ? i, attention at the women's game is now i ettin i ? i, i, attention at the women's game is now caettin ? i, i, , attention at the women's game is now iettini? i, i, , , i, getting? yeah, no, it is brilliant, isn't it? running _ getting? yeah, no, it is brilliant, isn't it? running on _ getting? yeah, no, it is brilliant, isn't it? running on the - getting? yeah, no, it is brilliant, isn't it? running on the menus, | isn't it? running on the menus, there is that interest and speculation about who is and who isn't, and that shows the progression. 2011, my last world cup, i rememberthe price progression. 2011, my last world cup, i remember the price at the fa had announced it in a big hotel, encouraging the press to come, but now it is obviously in high demand, and it is great to see the

i have gone to other countries during my career, like sweden, america, where their women's team are on the front pages and they were championing them all the time, and that was 20 years ago. so itjust seems strange to me, and annoying, really, that in england we were very much looked over, and women's sport in general was, but i think that is changing now, and opportunities in all walks of life, it is good, getting that progression, so it was about the championship, and for the girls to go and win it, we are one of the best teams in the world, so why shouldn't we be? just of the best teams in the world, so why shouldn't we be?— why shouldn't we be? just to let viewers know — why shouldn't we be? just to let viewers know if _ why shouldn't we be? just to let viewers know if they _ why shouldn't we be? just to let viewers know if they are - why shouldn't we be? just to let viewers know if they are joining | why shouldn't we be? just to let. viewers know if they are joining us, we have got a shot from sutton coldfield, that is the home of the grassroots club, a very different reveal to the last time when it was
