5:30 pm
on the south coast of england, a sightseeing boat remains the focus of the police investigation. and ahead of the fa cup final, we hear from manchester city's star — erling haaland — on how his life has changed forever — since arriving at the club. let's start with breaking news coming to us from wales because police who had been investigating that serious disorder in cardiff last monday say there have been further arrests in relation to those riots. a number of people were detained now stands at 20 in total. the disorder following a fatal road traffic collision which killed teenage boy kelly seven and harley evans. let's get the latest on these latest developments. let's bring in our correspondence, thomas morgan was there in cardiff. and thomas,

take us through what the police are actually saying here. the? take us through what the police are actually saying here.— actually saying here. they have arrested up _ actually saying here. they have arrested up to _ actually saying here. they have arrested up to 20 _ actually saying here. they have arrested up to 20 people - actually saying here. they have arrested up to 20 people from | actually saying here. they have - arrested up to 20 people from those riots that happened a week ago monday. 0n the 22nd of may. let me just run through the story again really, because we first got wind that something was happening in the west of cardiff in a neighbourhood called belief, one of the most deprived areas of whale. we heard that there was a ride happening. there was a live stream coming from the riot and you could see about 30 to 40 the riot and you could see about 30 to a0 young men, mostly really having the best part of a fight with riot police, really hurling missiles and setting cars on fire. i was there first thing in the morning, 5.30, six in the morning, and you could see the degree on the floor. there was a bonfire still smoking, a number of cards had been smashed to pieces, and we started looking at why this had taken place and the police had been pulling out statement saying there had been things on social media that the
5:32 pm
police were following two young boys early on monday evening. they said that they weren't following them, and that those two young boys had died in an accident. however, as the day transpired and later on, it did transpire that there was a police man following the two young boys, kylie sullivan who is 16 years old, and harvey evans, who was 15, and the minutes before the fatal crash. they weren't in the road when the crash happened but they were in the minutes before. so now, those rumours that were circulating on social media turned out to be true, and south wales police now is forced under pressure, they are being investigated by an independent 0ffice investigated by an independent office for police conduct who are investigating south wells polices actions and the minutes or so before that collision happened. did they follow protocol? did they follow the national and local policies, really? and these answers, i say, relate to the riots that was sparked after those rumours started floating on social media, the rumours that
5:33 pm
turned out to be true. all of those 20 people have been released on bail. and the rule, as you mention, young men between 16 and 35 years, i think 1a even and 36 years old, and the investigation into the riot and into the south wales police under the process up to the collision is ongoing. the process up to the collision is onauoin. , ' ., , the process up to the collision is onauoin. , ' ., u, ongoing. they say 17 males and three females. ongoing. they say 17 males and three females- they _ ongoing. they say 17 males and three females. they are _ ongoing. they say 17 males and three females. they are also _ ongoing. they say 17 males and three females. they are also saying - ongoing. they say 17 males and three females. they are also saying they i females. they are also saying they anticipate more arrests are expected to follow and have been giving details that in terms of their investigation, they have looked to 290 pieces of footage from the various officers dealing with the incident. so a huge amount of data that they are actually going through. that they are actually going throu . h. , ., that they are actually going throu~h. , ., ., ., that they are actually going throu~h. , . ., ., ., through. there is a huge amount of data as you — through. there is a huge amount of data as you mentioned _ through. there is a huge amount of data as you mentioned there. - through. there is a huge amount of data as you mentioned there. this. data as you mentioned there. this was something that was mentioned and the police press conference last week, actually a couple of days after the riot. the deputy chief constable, rachel blinken from south wales police, was talking about how much 22nd. they had about 300 hours
5:34 pm
orso much 22nd. they had about 300 hours or so because actually you are a number of the homes in the area also have that kind of door bell cams as well. so they were scouring the area for that extra material, a load of social media, as i mentioned, there was a live stream from a local witt jewel blog are being live streamed on youtube. so, all of that is available for the police to sift through. no doubt they would have gone through, some of those people might*ve come up on their systems from recognition, possibly as well, so they've got a huge task ahead. the debris that was left there, there is evidence they are to be collected as well. a number of the neighbours that road that had the most severe damage have said that they didn't recognise anybody. anybody that was involved in the riot. they weren't local to that street or from the neighbouring streets. they were from further away. but we don't have a detail of where these 20 people have been arrested are from, so we are waiting for more detail. and as i say, the

two investigations, no detail at the moment as to when they will be completed. moment as to when they will be completed-— moment as to when they will be comleted. ., ., ~ ., completed. thomas, i know he will brina us completed. thomas, i know he will bring us up-to-date _ completed. thomas, i know he will bring us up-to-date if— completed. thomas, i know he will bring us up-to-date if there - completed. thomas, i know he will bring us up-to-date if there is - bring us up—to—date if there is more, but thanks for the latest in terms of analysis of what the police have said in the last little while. i want to return straightaway to the breaking news from india, the news of a train crash with at least 30 people being reported dead in that instant in the east of the country. as i say, 30 people being reported as killed, but a hospitalised after as killed, but a hospitalised after a passenger train apparently derailed and then collided with a good strain. so that at some of the latest media reporting that is being reported by reuters. the prime minister has been tweeting there, and it is on the screen. he says.
5:36 pm
another interesting line has come from the states chief secretary, who is said that nearly 50 ambulances are reported at the scene, but there appeared to be far too many injured and so buses are now also being mobilised to shift the injured to hospitals. so you gatherfrom mobilised to shift the injured to hospitals. so you gather from all of those fragments of early information that a really serious train crash there, or the key lines, 30 people known to have died with another hundred and 79, apparently, hospitalised. many ambulances at the scene and buses being used to actually take some of the injured to hospital. i've been talking to our correspondent on their story and a moment or two. but those are just some of the latest details.
5:37 pm
one of the nation's best known presenters phillip schofield has told the bbc he's lost everything, and does not see a future for his career, after his affair with a junior male colleague. the anchor — who hosted the popular daytime show this morning, has been in the headlines after admitting to an "unwise but not illegal" relationship. in his first interview since the scandal, he said the affair only began several years after he first met the young man, who was 15 at the time. mr schofield strongly denies grooming him, but says he regrets the relationship and lying about it when itv tried to investigate. he's been talking to the bbc*s amol rajan. you've had quite the week. how are you? i think ithinki
5:38 pm
i think i understand how caroline flack felt. i think i understand how caroline flack felt. last week, if my... ..daughters hadn't been there... ..then...i wouldn't be here. and they've. .. ..guarded me. um... and won't let me out of their sight. it's like a weird...numbness. i know that's a selfish point of view. but you come to a point where you just think, "how much are you supposed to take?" if all of those people that write all of that stuff...
5:39 pm
do they ever think that there's actually... ..a person at the other end? and so... ..hereiam, um... are you feeling 0k to do this? are you feeling strong enough to do this interview? yeah, i have to. why? why do you want to do this interview? because there is an innocent person here who didn't do anything wrong. who is...vulnerable... ..and probably feels like i do. and... ..i just have to say... ..stop with him. ok, with me. but stop with him. leave him alone now. let me say, you know, a lot of my questions are going to be uncomfortable and, let's face it, intrusive. but you've chosen this opportunity
5:40 pm
to tell your side of the story. and there are questions that your viewers, all the people who supported you over the years — including your family — will want answers to. there's also, of course, lots of questions for itv in all this. you mentioned this young man, and at the centre of recent events is a young man who, together with many others in the media, we're not going to name. under article 8 of the human rights act, he has a right to privacy, and he's not here today to give his own account of events. when did you last speak to him? um... as i engaged the lawyerfor him. um... so...he needed independent support. and so that was the last time. how concerned are you about his welfare right now? massively. massively concerned. where did you first meet this young man in question? what were the circumstances? i was invited by a friend of mine to go to open a drama school.
5:41 pm
and that's where the picture was taken. um... whether it was immediately or sometime after he said, "will you follow him on twitter? because he's a fan." so i said, "yeah, sure, no problem." which i did. and he was, what, 15 at the time? yeah. and this is over a... but i follow... i follow 11,300 people. and in all the time i've been on twitter, there has never been any whiff of impropriety. and how often were you in touch with him? hardly — hardly at all. he then said that he was interested in television. "ok," you know? "good luck, good luck. anything i can do to help?" probably — that's what i normally say. um... and that was it for a while. and then... ..he... ..asked if he could... ..visit the studios, work—experience type of thing. i said, well, come down
5:42 pm
and have a look — for sure. which he did. how old was he when he first said to you "i'm interested in television"? was he 18 by that point? 19, then, i would think. 19 by then. when you look back now, if you were to look back at those messages now, is there any sense in which you were flirting with him? no. i've been a1 years in television. you know, nothing like this before — you know, no accusations. i mean, this is... this is all, you know, accusations. and then when you met him in person, was there a little moment of sexual attraction then even? absolutely not. 0k. so to be absolutely clear, how old was this young man when you first had any kind of sexual contact with him? 20. is that when... i mean, this is obviously the nub of it — and for the record, and to put speculation to rest — let me ask you directly, did you have any kind of sexual relationship or sex with him when he was underage? no — god, no.
5:43 pm
that... i think that is, you know... in my statement, it says, you know, consensual relationship, fully legal. i mean, that was approved by both sides. you know, that's. .. no, no. he'd been working at the show for...a few months. and... and we'd become mates. we were mates. um, you know, around the studios, you hang out together, you know, you chat to each other, that sort of stuff. and then... ..in my dressing room one day... ..something happened. um... which... ..you know, obviously, iwill... ..regret forever — for him and for me. mostly him. but it... that happened maybe four or five times over the next few months.
5:44 pm
and... i know it's. .. ..unforgivable. um... but we weren't boyfriends. we weren't in a relationship. i was really in a mess with my own sexuality at the time. and... ..itjust happened. how old was he at this stage? 20, 21. who knew on the team? nobody. to my knowledge. i mean, somebody has to know something for there to be a rumour later on. i didn't believe that anybody knew. and did you ever tell holly willoughby? no — god, no. that's a bit of a bigger question, because we have... 0ur make—up room was like a sanctuary —
5:45 pm
has always been a sanctuary. so you tell everything in that room. holly knows everything about me. i know everything about holly. holly did not know. nobody knew. and you never... you never told her? no, i didn't tell anybody. i mean, the reason this matters is because it is about potential abuse of power. and it is... i understand that. and that is a very, very valid question to put to me. and people would say the circumstances are as follows here. you met someone who was a child. you were in a position of power over them. you used your power eventually to give them something they craved — which was a shot at a job in the media. you nurtured a relationship and then that relationship became sexual. they might ask, what's the difference between that and grooming? well, i would say that your initial list of things was not right anyway. tell me why. because it was a totally innocent picture, a totally innocent twitter follow —
5:46 pm
of which i follow 11,a00 people — and...and then it was a completely innocent backwards—and—forwards over a period of time about a job, about careers. what's wrong with talking to someone no matter, you know, what age they are? does that mean that if — you know, if you are... if you're following anyone on twitter that you absolutely don't talk to anybody else or you don't give advice? so i disagree with the summation that you just gave, because that does paint a very grave picture. do you know if he has signed an nda — a non—disclosure agreement — preventing him from speaking? no. you don't know? if he has. no. did i make him sign an nda? no, absolutely not. but there's a question of whether or not he was, as it were, paid off — in effect, if he was paid off. no. was he paid for his silence? no — god, no. no. so is he free to speak if he wants to? yeah. yes. i mean, what he wants is for all of this to go away. he wants a quiet life. and just on a couple of points of information, just to be clear, you are currently
5:47 pm
— on an ongoing basis — you're paying for his legal advice and support. has there ever been, or is there an injunction or any sort of nda preventing media coverage of your relationship with him? no. why is all this coming out now, phillip? what was the catalyst? what changed ? it got too big. the lie got too big for both of us. itjust got enormous. it was growing and growing and growing. and it... it crossed over from the — from online to... ..mainstream news. itv*s position is that they — and they've only put out one statement about all this — they say they investigated allegations of an improper relationship, and they were told by both you and the young man that there was no relationship. in retrospect, was that investigation a sham? because it clearly didn't get to the truth, did it? i think if you have two people who are lying, then what can you do? but what did that investigation amount to? was it... was itjust a phone call to you and a phone call to the young man? was it sort of a proper sort of independent... i think he was asked...
5:48 pm
he was asked quite a bit. i was asked a couple of times. so, you know, it... and it wasn't formal. is this the tip of the iceberg? are there more allegations of revelations to come or as far as you're concerned, is all of that... it's my biggest, sorriest secret. and if you've been affected by any of the issues raised in that interview with phillip schofield, there is a list of organisations which can provide help. it's there at the bbc actionline website. it seems the union at heathrow
5:49 pm
airport hasjumped the it seems the union at heathrow airport has jumped the gun because the correction has come from them because the unite in notice regarding the industrial action at heathrow is not live. that is how they put it. it should be held at they put it. it should be held at the moment until notices served on the moment until notices served on the employer next week. there is a sequence of events that are supposed to happen with the employers being told that apparently hasn't been done. it will be done next week, and then presumably a formal announcement will be made publicly about future industrial action. it just a clarification coming from the unite india. more now on that breaking story from india — and more than 50 people are reported to have been killed and 300 injured after a passenger train and a freight train collided in eastern india. lets go live to our southeast editor who is they are in the newsroom, monitoring the details as they are coming into us. clearly, this is a
5:50 pm
very serious crash with the numbers rising sharply. yes very serious crash with the numbers rising sharply-— rising sharply. yes indeed. now the officials are — rising sharply. yes indeed. now the officials are talking _ rising sharply. yes indeed. now the officials are talking about _ rising sharply. yes indeed. now the officials are talking about the - rising sharply. yes indeed. now the officials are talking about the two . officials are talking about the two different trains involved in this very tragic accident. and what they say is a passenger express coming from the eastern indian city of calcutta going to chennai derailed in the district of baller sure. then, there was another train coming from the opposite direction that hit these coaches, and that caused this tragic accident. a number of people are feared dead and dozens are injured. and how the first train came off the tracks is still not very clear. some reports suggest that the freight train, something was artie there on the track. so there were three different trains involved and now the government has
5:51 pm
rushed dozens of ambulances to the site and people are being rescued. we can see the pictures on social media and in the indian news websites. the tracks very badly damaged and the rescue teams are desperately trying to rescue people because these are proper ion coaches. they have to cut through these windows while they are trying to rescue people. there outside this accident site and waiting for news. i will come back to those efforts to take the injured to hospital in a moment, but the prime minister already has been tweeting about this, hasn't he? the already has been tweeting about this, hasn't he?— already has been tweeting about this, hasn't he? the prime minister has exnressed _ this, hasn't he? the prime minister has expressed condolences - this, hasn't he? the prime minister has expressed condolences on - this, hasn't he? the prime ministerj has expressed condolences on what this, hasn't he? the prime minister. has expressed condolences on what he has expressed condolences on what he has described is a very tragic accident and that he has also extracted officials to rush to the site. and the chief minister of the state has delivered is also they are on the site to view the rescue work and supervise the rescue work. and
5:52 pm
to find out why this kind of accident is happening because this is involving three different trains in this particular area. india has been modernising its tracks and modernising its signal system. for example, they are now introducing a superfast train. so we are not sure how this particular incident happened, but this will also be a reminder to the officials about the signalling system and how the trains can be monitored. it is not uncommon to have train accidents in india, but again, the number of the casualty figures shows that it was a major disaster and it is also a clear reminder to what needs to be done to protect these tracks. those are some of — done to protect these tracks. those are some of the _ done to protect these tracks. those are some of the questions - done to protect these tracks. those are some of the questions that - done to protect these tracks. those are some of the questions that will| are some of the questions that will undoubtably have to come. but at the moment, they still appear to be actually dealing with the incident on the ground with so many people. i was just referencing one quote from one official who was saying that in terms of numbers, there were just far too many for ambulances. they
5:53 pm
were having to actually bring in buses to take those numbers to the hospitals. yes buses to take those numbers to the hos - itals. , buses to take those numbers to the hositals. , , u, , hospitals. yes indeed, because in this trains express _ hospitals. yes indeed, because in this trains express train, - hospitals. yes indeed, because in this trains express train, you - hospitals. yes indeed, because in| this trains express train, you have hundreds of people travelling. and the train is the cheapest and most popular mode of transport in india for long distances. each train services, the express trains will have hundreds of people. and that is why they are sending this national emergency team for rescue work. they are also already 50 ambulances we are talking about being rushed to the site. but then as they rescue more and more people, they have to use whatever available means to take these people to hospital. saving lives is a priority. the first and foremost task is to rescue those who are already trapped because some of these coaches have been damaged badly, which means the doors could have possibly been jammed. badly, which means the doors could have possibly beenjammed. these windows have these iron rails which means it is difficult to take them out, except through the emergency doors. so that is a priority, to save people who are trapped, and
5:54 pm
then send those injured to various hospitals. it is a big logistical task for the authorities and that is why both the federal government and the state governments, they are rushing in various teams. and it is also late in the night there in india. so that is also causing a problem for the authorities. i’zre problem for the authorities. i've onl not problem for the authorities. i've only got about _ problem for the authorities. i've only got about a5 seconds left, but you know, we have talked so many times over the last few years, whether it signalling, track, trains, why does india struggle so much with its basic infrastructure on the railways question are mam; much with its basic infrastructure on the railways question are many of the tracks, on the railways question are many of the tracks. they _ on the railways question are many of the tracks, they were _ on the railways question are many of the tracks, they were built _ on the railways question are many of the tracks, they were built during - the tracks, they were built during colonial era period and the governments have been re—railing many of these tracks and improving track systems but india is one of the largest network in the world. with the traffic of the train system. and they have been working on that but the sheer size of it makes it difficult for the authorities to maintain many of these tracks. but at this point it is too early to find out what exactly led to this accident. but they have been modernising over the
5:55 pm
years but then because of the nature of the scale, it is difficult for the authorities to maintain. arnie of the scale, it is difficult for the authorities to maintain. we have to leave there. _ the authorities to maintain. we have to leave there, because _ the authorities to maintain. we have to leave there, because we - the authorities to maintain. we have to leave there, because we are - to leave there, because we are coming to the end of today's verified life. we will obviously have updates here on the programme on bbc and the next few hours. thanks for watching. goodbye. hello there. we've got lots of warm sunshine to come this weekend, but it will be quite cool at night. now, today we saw the sunshine developing in more of the country, even in eastern parts of england, where it's been cloudy over the past few days, the cloud has been much thinner. we've introduced some drier air actually off the north sea all the way from norway. now, there is more cloud in the centre of our high, and eventually that will push across northern scotland and down the north sea, but notjust yet. there's a bit of thin cloud coming in to some parts of england and we've got some cloud in the far north of scotland overnight. but clear skies, a dry night, and a cool night for the time of year. temperatures in england
5:56 pm
and wales could be as low as four or five degrees, maybe a little chillier across some eastern areas of scotland. now, this cloud that comes in overnight should tend to break up and we'll see the sunshine coming through. we'll see a little bit of fairweather cloud developing over the high ground in scotland and then perhaps across some southern parts of england. but it looks like it's going to be a dry day. a lot of sunshine around, a little bit warmer probably than today. temperatures widely reaching 20 to 22 degrees. but with that sunshine, it's strong sunshine as well. so we've got high uv levels during saturday and probably into sunday as well where we keep the sunshine. but there is that cloud coming in across northern scotland and then moving back down in the north sea. so we're getting back to square one. more cloud across eastern parts of england in particular. it should tend to retreat back to the coast. some coastal areas could stay cloudy and rather cool, but otherwise a lot of sunshine to come. still breezy in the far south of the uk, and generally still west is best in terms of blue skies
5:57 pm
and sunshine, and still 16 or 17 along those north sea coasts. any changes as we head into next week? well, not really. the high pressure is still there, and it's still feeding in the cloud from off the north sea. it could be more extensive across england, i think, on monday. but again, it does tend to retreat back to the coast, but with that onshore breeze just feeding that cloud all the while, but a lot of sunshine around again to start next week. and those temperatures again reaching 23 or 2a degrees at best. and that high pressure will linger right the way through next week. there's no sign of any rain at all, sunshine being the order of the day. some cool nights, but if anything, getting a bit warmer by the end of next week.
