11:10 am
city centre. it is multiuse, residential, businesses, and usually busy. the incident happened at 4am. two word found dead in the street. police were called here and then it is believed the van incident happened after that. it is not clear, the third incident, the man found dead at magdala road, to the north, it is not clear the timeline. we have other images to show you. milton street. that was the magdala road, what we are referring to as incident three. we have images. this is from milton street. you can see the trees. this is the area under police cordon and also this area, near the theatre, you can see the trams. a pedestrianised area near the market. this area is also locked down. large parts of the city are locked down as police try to gather

evidence. someone got a knock on the doorfirst thing in evidence. someone got a knock on the door first thing in the morning asking for cctv, as you heard earlier. police will go door—to—door, scouring those areas over a large area, although not very far in a car, six minute drive from one to the other and ten minutes from incident one to incident two. a large area where police have to gather the in—depth evidence and hopefully they are able to glean more information about what happened. more information about what happened-— more information about what hauened. ., y* , happened. courtney bembridge, monitorina happened. courtney bembridge, monitoring events. _ happened. courtney bembridge, monitoring events. thank- happened. courtney bembridge, monitoring events. thank you. l monitoring events. thank you. throughout the morning, we have been getting reaction from the country's leaders. rishi sunak tweeted. he said, i want to thank the police and emergency services for their ongoing response to the shocking incident in nottingham. he said he was being kept updated on developments and stressed police must be given time
11:12 am
to undertake their work. he said his thoughts are with those injured and the family and loved ones of those who lost their lives. we heard from the home secretary suella braverman who said she was shocked and saddened that three people have lost their lives today in nottingham. she said her thoughts are with those affected by the incident and that she had spoken to the chief constable and is receiving updates. she thanked the emergency services. and we have heard from the labour leader sir keir starmer who commented on the incident while speaking at an event at london tech week. we can listen to what he said. people here will probably see the news filtering through and i do not think we can start the session without acknowledging there has been a serious incident in nottingham this morning. information is still coming through. it has been reported that three people have lost their lives. i am sure i speakfor
11:13 am
everyone in the room to say we would like to send our thoughts to all those affected and to the emergency services, who are responding to this as we speak. we will get to tech in as we speak. we will get to tech in a moment, buti as we speak. we will get to tech in a moment, but i think when there is something that serious happening in nottingham, we need to acknowledge it and send our thoughts of those affected and thank those responding to it on behalf of all of us. the labour leader— to it on behalf of all of us. the labour leader there. _ to it on behalf of all of us. the labour leader there. we can bring you the latest pictures coming into us from nottingham. you have seen some of these already. they are showing the city centre remains shut down. you can see police officers. there is a police cordoned. right in the city centre. that is where tram lines run. the tramline network going through the city centre. it has been suspended. that is the concert hall, i believe. you can see all so there are fire endings that
11:14 am
have been —— fire engines that have been deployed. i think the crucial thing to point out from the police statement is their investigations continue. this is very much what we are looking at, and active crime scene. a31—year—old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. three people have died in with these incidents. three other people are in hospital. it is not clear what condition they are in. these are areas that are normally busy. we are getting close to lunchtime there. the area around the market square usually packed with people but at the moment it is still cordoned off and the chief constable earlier said she is asking the public to be patient while inquiries continue. she said at this time, a number of rows in the city will remain closed as the investigation progresses. it
11:15 am
is key we have not heard on camera from nottinghamshire police yet. but we heard that rishi sunak was asking people to be patient while investigations go on. if you are concerned. nottinghamshire police have set up a dedicated emergency phone line. the number is 0800 096 1011. we have heard from three mps who represent nottingham. they are all labour mps. they issued a joint statement. they posted that on twitter and said, our city has been devastated by the deaths of three people. they sent their thoughts and prayers with the families and loved ones of those who died and were injured. they said, we are grateful
11:16 am
for the efforts of emergency responders in tackling these incidents. and echoing thoughts of other politicians they said the police must be allowed to do their jobs when it comes to investigating what happened. what is telling is how much they paid tribute to nottingham. they said a beautiful city, home to people from all backgrounds. they said they are shaken by events and will meet people collectively to heal. when we report on these incidents, there is always the impact on the wider community. i spoke to bbc radio nottingham's hayley compton earlier. she gave us more information about where the incidents took place. all where the incidents took place. all of where the incidents took place. fill of the roads lead into the city centre. ilkeston road leads into the city centre. i live at the end of ilkeston road. that is a major bus route into the city, very busy. milton street is the road that has
11:17 am
the tramlines. that is where the van incident took place. that is a street one up from ilkeston road as you come into the city centre. the geography is they are quite close but they are a fair distance if you are a pedestrian. if you are driving, not very far, but if you are walking into the city centre, they would take at least ten minutes to walk between the two places. nottingham is a fantastic city. everything feels like it is close together, easily reached. all the transport links are very good within the city centre. that is why it is such a disruption and shock for people this morning because these are incredibly busy, well used streets where the incidents have happened. the streets where the incidents have hauened. “ *, , ., ,., happened. the bbc's hayley compton. we have more —

11:19 am
of nottingham this morning. police say there were three separate incidents. we can go through what we think we know so far. police say they were called to ilkeston road just after four in the morning. there two were found dead in the street and you can see an image of ilkeston road here. another man was found dead in magdala road. officers were called to another incident on milton street where a van attempted to run over three people. those three people are being treated in hospital. we are not clear of the condition they are in. i should say we are not clear of the sequence of events after that first incident that happened just after 4am on ilkeston road where police say they found two people dead in the street. it is not clear how soon after those other two incidents took
11:20 am
place. they found a man dead in the road on another street and the incident where police say a van drove into three people on the road, leaving them injured. at this stage, it is unclear what condition those three people are in. we know they were run over by a van. at the moment, we have not heard anything on camera from nottinghamshire police. we have had a statement which came from the chief constable. in that statement she said it was an horrific and tragic incident claiming the lives of the people. we believe these incidents are linked and we have a man in custody. this investigation is at early stages and detectives are working to establish what has happened. we ask the public to be patient while inquiries continue. a number of rows in the city will remain closed as the investigation progresses. we have
11:21 am
heard from east midlands ambulance who have responded to the incident alongside other emergency services. in their statement they said, it is too early to comment on casualties or the exact nature of the incident. they said they are working closely with police and have well rehearsed plans in place to deal with this incident. it is important to say, at the moment, there are many things we do not know at this stage. we do not know possible motive. we do not know any more about the man arrested on suspicion of murder except that he was 31 years old and remains in police custody. we also do not know any more about the identity of the three deceased, or the three people who are in hospital. we are going through this as best as we can and will bring you all the latest as it comes to us. colleague has spoken to
11:22 am
an eyewitness called linda. some of the detail she said she witnessed are distressing. what did you see, where and when. 5.30, i was going to work and a white van pulled up alongside me. i thought, that's weird. this was at the theatre royal, just at the corner? _ yeah, just on the corner. and he looked in his mirror and saw a police car behind him. he then... ..quickened up. there were two people turning the corner. he went straight into these two people. the woman went on the kerb, the man went up in the air and there was such a bang. i wish i never saw it,
11:23 am
it's really shaken me up. i went over. perhaps i shouldn't have gone over, but i wanted to see if i could help. that's it, really. but he backed up after he hit the man and the woman, and then drove up upper parliament street. and the police followed him? yes. and this was at 5.30 this morning? yes. if one of my colleagues had been there earlier, she would have been knocked over. i took her to her work, the university, and then i went back to work. did you see what happened to the man and woman who were hit? the woman was sitting up on the kerb. she looked ok.
11:24 am
the man was lying down, but then he got up and sat on the side, waiting for an ambulance. i can't believe he was able to get up. he was bleeding quite a lot? yes, i would say so. how are you doing? um, shaky. well, i've never seen anything like it. ijust managed to look around and saw it happening. i wish i hadn't looked around. are you doing ok? yeah, i feel better now. my boss gave me a hot drink with sugar. that was an eyewitness speaking to my colleague. we can now go live back to the scene and speak to reporter hayley compton who is with bbc radio nottingham. it looks like
11:25 am
things are very much in action when it comes to the police operation. what more can you tell us? i am in an iconic area of the city. behind me is the third to royal —— is the theatre royal. people will recognise. people come to the theatre in nottingham. this really strange situation this morning. where these streets would be busy with people shopping, making their way into college and work, there are police cordons across the city. this is just one location where you see the blue and white tape. in front of me is a stopped tram, it is empty. all of the trams in the city have been stopped because of this major incident. when i spoke to police who arrived here this morning, they said they have been here since five o'clock. we know now the police were called out 4am to an incident where
11:26 am
two people were found dead. there was another person found dead. and a separate incident where a van was seen driving into pedestrians. police say they have arrested a 31—year—old man but there is a huge police presence in the city. behind me, a couple of police cars. they were blocking rose this morning. people around the city trying to make sense of it. it is a strange thing to wake up to. it is a beautiful, sunny day, and people coming to the city are trying to make their way through the centre and discovering this. people want to find out why it has happened to a city they know and love.- city they know and love. there a witness called _ city they know and love. there a witness called wayne _ city they know and love. there a witness called wayne who - city they know and love. there a j witness called wayne who spoke city they know and love. there a i witness called wayne who spoke to city they know and love. there a - witness called wayne who spoke to a colleague in the update on the bbc live page. he said he did not see or hear anything but he was not
