sentiments echoed by the leader of the opposition. i'm sure i speak for everybody in this room in saying that we'd like to just send our thoughts to all those affected, and to the emergency services who are responding to this as we speak. this is where, at 5.30 in the morning, police arrested a 31—year—old man on suspicion of murder. he is now being held in custody. there is still a heavy police presence in nottingham this lunchtime as the city begins the search for answers. there is still a heavy police

tape, all around the section of this road. this is quite a huge cording, it has been here all day. a few streets away, we have seen forensics officers down that street putting up what looks like tripods and going down that area looking for forensic evidence. as you been hearing, police were called out 4am to ilkeston road, which is around 20 minutes walk from where i am standing. two people were found dead. a short time later, 5:30am, police were called after a van attempted to run over three people over, and we understand those people are in hospital being treated for their injuries. there is also a third man found dead to the north of the city of nottingham. as i say, discord and is in place, there are
2:05 pm
cordons in and around nottingham. we understand one has been extended on ilkeston road, a colleague of mine saw a property being raided there and armed police leaving the scene. the bbc has been sent a picture of a white vauxhall barn. we understand thatis white vauxhall barn. we understand that is where the arrest took place —— vauxhall van. a31—year—old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. the people i've been speaking to, it is a muted mood, a strange feeling and atmosphere. people are trying to get on with their daily lives as best they can, but of course they have their thoughts and their minds on the people who have been injured and killed in this incident. there are gaps in the timeline, gaps in terms of the facts. people asking questions about what has gone on and

why it has happened, what could be the motive. we are waiting to hear more from nottinghamshire police and we understand they will give us an update. we understand they will give us an u date. * , we understand they will give us an udate. *, , ., ~ ., we understand they will give us an udate. *, , .,~ ., ., update. let's breakdown what you have seen- _ update. let's breakdown what you have seen. let's _ update. let's breakdown what you have seen. let's start _ update. let's breakdown what you have seen. let's start with - update. let's breakdown what you have seen. let's start with the - have seen. let's start with the opening up of the city centre. police said people need to be patient as they continue their investigations, and large parts were cordoned off. but it looks like things are slowly opening up. i think because this is fast moving, a dynamic situation, cordons will be extended, some might be reduced as work progresses. if there is evidence that needs to be obtained, that will take a while. the people i spoke to, some don't know what has happened and are bemused and found

scenes like this one that i am at. some people don't know what has happened. they realise what has happened, they don't mind too much. you can hear this tannoy behind me, reminding people that trams aren't running. once people know the reason behind why there is disruption, they seem to understand. just behind why there is disruption, they seem to understand.— seem to understand. just tell me about the geography _ seem to understand. just tell me about the geography of _ seem to understand. just tell me about the geography of these - about the geography of these incidents which police say were linked. police say the second incident, a van was driven into three people, injuring them. they are in hospital, and we don't know their condition. we were hearing earlierfrom the head of their condition. we were hearing earlier from the head of the victoria centre, a shopping centre which i believe is close to that area, so give us a sense of where
2:08 pm
these locations are in terms of other main landmarks. you are in the centre, the heart of nottingham. i am. ilkeston road is around 20 minutes walk. the second incident on milton street as a couple of streets down from where i am, very close to the shopping centre you are mentioning. that is where we have seen forensics officers today. that is near to where i am standing. then the third location, magdala road, is to the north of the city. geographically, and we've been looking at maps, they are not that close. there is a bit of a spread. it will be interesting to see why the geography played out like it did. it the geography played out like it did. , ., ., the geography played out like it did. , ., , ., the geography played out like it did. , ., , . ., did. it is too early to speculate, we haven't _ did. it is too early to speculate, we haven't heard _ did. it is too early to speculate, we haven't heard from - did. it is too early to speculate, we haven't heard from the - we haven't heard from the authorities on what the possible

motive for these separate incidents is. but you are saying then, and our colleague has also been reporting on the bbc, that there was a raid, armed police went to a property on ilkeston road, where the first reported incident was. is there any more that you can tell us about the scene on ilkeston road right now? so, we know there was accord and on ilkeston road, and a colleague of mine saw a cording being distended and said he saw a property being raided, and there were reports of armed police leaving the scene. you can see me there are more forensic officers. they have come up to this part and are doing their work. that has happened in the last few minutes as i've been talking. we
2:10 pm
has happened in the last few minutes as i've been talking.— as i've been talking. we will keep on those pictures _ as i've been talking. we will keep on those pictures for _ as i've been talking. we will keep on those pictures for a _ as i've been talking. we will keep on those pictures for a second. i on those pictures for a second. thank you very much. we can see there, right in the heart of the city centre, four forensics officers slowly walking in the centre of the city. a sign that investigation, a murder investigation, of course, is continuing in earnest. you can see the police cordoned there and you can see these forensic officers. these are live pictures, where you can see forensics officers. it is important to remind people who don't not a surly note nottingham, this is the heart of the city centre that we are looking at —— don't necessarily know. you can see the two lines of tram tracks, because nottingham has a tram system. it is normally run
2:11 pm
through the city, but of course at the moment, tram services remain suspended. you can see one tram that has stopped mid journey. and buses as were have been suspended. many roads have closed. police in their earlier statement, the only one from not in so —— nottinghamshire police ask for patience as that inquiries continue. as you can see on these pictures, it remains an active crime scene right in the heart of nottingham city centre. i think what is quite striking is the time that has passed since the incident because the incident was at four in the morning, on ilkeston road. it is now ten hours on and the roads are
2:12 pm
still closed in the centre. forensic investigations are continuing. we still haven't had an on camera update from the police, we don't know the motive at the moment, the identity of the deceased or indeed the injured, and we don't know the identity of the accused. all we know is a 31—year—old man has been arrested in connection with those deaths on suspicion of murder, and he remains in police custody. so, we will obviously keep with those pictures from the scene, but for now, let's hearfrom some pictures from the scene, but for now, let's hear from some of the witnesses. our correspondent spoke earlier to one eyewitness at the scene called lynne. she shared what she saw. a warning, the details of this are quite distressing. what did
2:13 pm
you see, why and when?— this are quite distressing. what did you see, why and when? 5:30am, i was auoin to you see, why and when? 5:30am, i was going to work — you see, why and when? 5:30am, i was going to work and _ you see, why and when? 5:30am, i was going to work and a _ you see, why and when? 5:30am, i was going to work and a white _ you see, why and when? 5:30am, i was going to work and a white van _ you see, why and when? 5:30am, i was going to work and a white van pulled i going to work and a white van pulled up going to work and a white van pulled up beside me. i looked. this going to work and a white van pulled up beside me. i looked.— up beside me. i looked. this was at the theatre — up beside me. i looked. this was at the theatre royal _ up beside me. i looked. this was at the theatre royal question - up beside me. i looked. this was at the theatre royal question mark. up beside me. i looked. this was at l the theatre royal question mark yes, just on the corner. he the theatre royal question mark yes, just on the corner.— just on the corner. he looked in the mirror and — just on the corner. he looked in the mirror and saw _ just on the corner. he looked in the mirror and saw a _ just on the corner. he looked in the mirror and saw a police _ just on the corner. he looked in the mirror and saw a police car - just on the corner. he looked in the mirror and saw a police car behind i mirror and saw a police car behind him. he then... quickened up. there were two people turning the corner. he went straight into these two people. the woman went on the kerb, the man went up in the air and there was such a bang. i wish i never saw it, it's really shaken me up. i went over. perhaps i shouldn't have gone over, but i wanted to see if i could help. that's it, really.
2:14 pm
but he backed up after he hit the man and the woman, and then drove up upper parliament street. and the police followed him? yes. and this was at 5.30 this morning? yes. if one of my colleagues had been there earlier, she would have been knocked over. i took her to university and then i went back to work. did you see what happened to the man and woman who were hit? the woman was sitting up on the kerb. she looked ok. the man was lying down, but then he got up and sat on the side, waiting for an ambulance. i can't believe he was able to get up. he was bleeding quite a lot?
2:15 pm
yes, i would say so. how are you doing? um, shaky. well, i've never seen anything like it. ijust managed to look around and saw it happening. i wish i hadn't looked around. are you doing ok? yeah, i feel better now. my boss gave me a hot drink with sugar. it is always important to ask how people are doing in these incidents. we've just had people are doing in these incidents. we'vejust had a people are doing in these incidents. we've just had a statement coming, she has... he has been speaking. apologies. the bishop of nottingham, the former bishop of eight years, told my colleague on bbc radio 5
2:16 pm
live his heart, thought and prayers go out all too involved in the incident. he said the city has a strong spirit from different backgrounds, and otherfaith backgrounds, and other faith communities backgrounds, and otherfaith communities will be open by anyone to come together and receive support. he went on to say starting now, we can pull together like we always do in nottingham, support people, whatever their background, whatever their fate. that comes after we heard from the archbishop of canterbury, who described the incident as terrible and tragic. he said hejoined with incident as terrible and tragic. he said he joined with everyone praying for all those affected. he added his thoughts were with the emergency services in the ongoing response. those investigations continue, there is plenty of speculation about what the motive might be, but at this stage we don't know. we haven't heard any more from the police.
2:17 pm
earlier i spoke to donna shaw, a crime, justice and police commentator, but former bbc affairs correspondent, and he talked us through how the police deal with these incidents. the through how the police deal with these incidents.— through how the police deal with these incidents. the one thing is to find all the evidence _ these incidents. the one thing is to find all the evidence they _ these incidents. the one thing is to find all the evidence they possibly i find all the evidence they possibly can, that means keeping the crime scene secure, preserving all the evidence of what has happened, to build a picture and gather evidence in the event for space comes to trial. but is really important. the second aspect, which we aren't seeing but i am sure has been going on behind—the—scenes support six hours now, is to find out about these individual in custody, the 31—year—old suspect arrested on suspicion of murder. what do police know about him, who is he, where is he from? i am sure they have gone to
2:18 pm
his home address, raided it, looking for computers, laptops, mobile phones, search through his accounts to find out if he is linked to anybody else, discussing it with anybody else, discussing it with anybody else, discussing it with anybody else, any motivation. that will be the absolute priority. i would have thought by now police would have thought by now police would be some way advanced in those parts, but getting ahold of devices is not easy. i am sure they will have asked him if this is part of any wider campaign or plot, so they would have already asked those questions because this is clearly potentially crucial to ascertain whether there is a wider threat. so those of the two strands of the investigation. and we are not hearing a lot about the investigation because it is still
2:19 pm
going on, the suspect is in custody. when police have an update, i am sure they will provide it. their main areas — sure they will provide it. their main areas in _ sure they will provide it. their main areas in nottingham - sure they will provide it. their main areas in nottingham city centre are obviously still crime scenes, the police cordons remain there. that is several hours since the incident were reported, 4am. we are now getting close to 1pm. is that typical? you are shutting down the city centre. ii typical? you are shutting down the ci centre. , ., typical? you are shutting down the city centre-— city centre. if you think about any crime where _ city centre. if you think about any crime where someone _ city centre. if you think about any crime where someone has - city centre. if you think about any crime where someone has been l city centre. if you think about any - crime where someone has been found dead, suspected, and someone suspected of murder, think of any crime scene, it can take hours for police and forensic experts to go through that scene, looking for all the evidence. you can't leave something to chance, you can't miss out something. you do not know how this investigation is going to
2:20 pm
unfold, what the suspect might say. for example, imagine the suspect says it was an accident he went into the people. imagine he says that. you will have to make sure through your investigations that you have, can counter that line of defence, have looked at cctv, secured all the footage, evidence from the road, all sorts of markings. it is something that has to take some time. because of this unusual situation, what it means for nottingham is large parts of the city are cordoned off. i am sure police will be mindful of trying to get traffic moving as quickly as possible. in terms of other strands of the investigation, i am sure nottinghamshire police have been in touch with their counterparts in counterterrorism
2:21 pm
units. there is the national headquarters in scotland yard, to find out if there is any terror link. on the face of it, this looks like it has the hallmarks of a terrorism attack. we shouldn'tjump to conclusions because it may not be at all. at the moment it is being handled by nottinghamshire police. if it is declared as a terrorist act, which can only come from the senior coordinator, if the declaration comes, scotland yard's counterterrorism department will take over, i am sure.— counterterrorism department will take over, i am sure. former bbc correspondent. — take over, i am sure. former bbc correspondent, danny _ take over, i am sure. former bbc correspondent, danny shaw. - take over, i am sure. former bbc correspondent, danny shaw. it i take over, i am sure. former bbc correspondent, danny shaw. it is| take over, i am sure. former bbc i correspondent, danny shaw. it is too early to speculate what the motive might be. a lot of people are on social media, but we are waiting to hear from the police. social media, but we are waiting to hearfrom the police. once social media, but we are waiting to hear from the police. once they update us on the investigation, all

we have is that statement from police several hours ago that talked about these three separate but linked incidents, one which happened on ilkeston road after 4am where two people were found dead. a second one where a van duo towards three people trying to run them over. and a third one where a man was found dead. these pictures we are showing you have come into worse, showing a white vauxhall van, and you can see the damage to the front of the van. there are dense on the bonnet, and above the radiator grille, there are cracks on the windscreen. this is a key part of the police investigation. we have also got some stills that show a rucksack pictured

at the side of the van. police, as i say, said one of the incident involved a van. we don't know at the moment whether that is the same van which was said to have tried to run over three people over. we do know that the van is a key part of the police investigation, said that is what we have seen. now, we also have some more pictures that have just come into us. we were talking about a raid that happened just before 1pm on ilkeston road, the site of the first incidentjust on ilkeston road, the site of the first incident just after thorium this morning. ——just first incident just after thorium this morning. —— just after 4am. you can see police raiding that road. they knocked the door down, and police are outside the property. those images were filmed by our

this. people do come to the theatre because it is the centre of the country. a strange situation this morning, where the streets would be busy with people shopping, going to work, there are these police cordons across the city. this is just one location where you see the tape in front of me. there is a stopped tram, it is empty. all of the trams have been stopped because of this incident. when i was speaking to some of the police this morning, they said they have been here since 5am. they were called art 4am to an incident where two people were found dead. another person has been found dead, and then a separate incident where a van was seen driving into pedestrians. the police say they have arrested a 31—year—old man, but

2:27 pm
police cordoned, but not like this. there are several locations within the city centre and just outside. this is an extremely busy part of the city, and you can hear the tram notifications saying they have been halted into the city centre. i am surprised because the level of police presence, the amount of areas cordoned off, and because of the amount of worry i've been speaking to people about. they are reassured about the police presence, but they are obviously quite frightened about what they are hearing, the reports they heard about what has happened in the early hours of the morning. what are people you have been speaking to told you?— what are people you have been speaking to told you? they've been sa in: speaking to told you? they've been saying they've _ speaking to told you? they've been saying they've had _ speaking to told you? they've been saying they've had to _ speaking to told you? they've been saying they've had to take - speaking to told you? they've been saying they've had to take different j saying they've had to take different routes to work, they are having to work. there are the odd people who
