zand : and tragic have caught them horrific and tragic —— called them. this was ilkeston road this lunchtime, and this was that same street early this morning. police had found two people dead, local man told the bbc he had cries for help and a bloodcurdling scream before seeing a man and woman stabbed multiple times. it was the beginning of a sequence of events that led to the lockdown of nottingham city centre. officers were soon in milton street, right in the heart of the city, where it's claimed that a van tried to run over pedestrians. lynn saw it happen. two people, turning the corner, he went straight into these two people. the woman went on the kerb. the man went up in the air. there was such a bang. i wish i never saw it,
4:01 pm
because it's really shaken me up. police later said that a third person had also been hit. all three are said to be in hospital. one is in a critical condition. the woman was sitting up on the kerb. she looked ok. the man was lying down, but then he got up. he sat on the side, waiting for an ambulance. but ijust can't believe he was able to get up after the head wound. there was also a body discovered in magdala street, just to the north of the city centre. police say they are keeping an open mind is towards motors and working with counterterrorism officers.

sentiments echoed by the leader of the opposition. i'm sure i speak for everybody in this room in saying that we'd like to just send our thoughts to all those affected, and to the emergency services who are responding to this as we speak. this is where, at 5.30 in the morning, police arrested a 31—year—old man on suspicion of murder. he is now being held in custody. forensic teams: the city centre as nottingham begins the search for answers. there is still a huge

police presence in the city centre, with several police cordons blocking off huge sections of the city centre. the police gave a statement and our ago with some more information, saying they are keeping an open mind over the motive of the attack, but they said they believe there is no one else outstanding in connection with the incidents. they gave an outline of the timings, saying police were called organs and road just after 4am after two people were killed —— called to ilkeston road. a man had attempted to run over three people, one of whom is in a critical condition, whilst the others have suffered minor injuries. a man was found dead in magdala road was 31—year—old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in custody. major roads will remain closed as a thorough

investigation is under way. they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attacks. they said a team of dedicated detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding those attacks. kate meynell said this is a tragic series of events which has led to the lives of events which has led to the lives of three innocent people being taken and another member in critical condition. ourthoughts and another member in critical condition. our thoughts are with all the families affected by this shocking incident and we are working hard to work out what has happened. we are at the early stages of the investigation i need to determine the motives behind the attacks and will keep the public updated as soon as we are able to say more. we are working alongside counterterrorism police to establish facts, as we normally would do in the circumstances. we do have a man in custody, who has been arrested on suspicion of murder. we don't believe anyone else is involved in
4:05 pm
the incident, and it is safe to go into the city centre, but a number of streets, including l consider road, —— l let's bring in jo let's bring injo black, who has been covering these events. givers the geography of where we are and where we are in relation to the incidents which happened. we are here on other _ incidents which happened. we are here on other pollen _ incidents which happened. we are here on other pollen street, - incidents which happened. we are here on other pollen street, bang | incidents which happened. we are l here on other pollen street, bang in the city centre of nottingham. we are outside the theatre royal, one of the most iconic buildings. down there is the victoria centre, the main shopping centre, full of big stores. lots of cafe is in bar surrounding this theatre. at the moment, it is quiet. on a day like today, a semi day, it would be much
4:06 pm
busier. we have seen people file outs, but nowhere near as many as there would be on a normal day. this is not a normal day.— is not a normal day. people coming into the city — is not a normal day. people coming into the city centre, _ is not a normal day. people coming into the city centre, many - is not a normal day. people coming into the city centre, many didn't . into the city centre, many didn't know what had happened, so there is a degree of shock.— know what had happened, so there is a degree of shock. some people have been listening — a degree of shock. some people have been listening to _ a degree of shock. some people have been listening to the _ a degree of shock. some people have been listening to the news _ a degree of shock. some people have been listening to the news today, - been listening to the news today, not everyone does, die spoken to people who have stepped into the city, they've worked into it and they are bemused. they have had their day and theirjourneys their day and their journeys disrupted. their day and theirjourneys disrupted. once they understand what is happened, they are quite understanding about it and are so pathetic. as you are saying, we know at four o'clock this morning police were called to all consider road, where two people were found dead, and around 530 in the morning ——
4:07 pm
ilkeston road. there was an attempt by a van to run three people over. they went to hospital. we know a third man was found dead on magdala road, which is to the north of the city. as far as the information we are getting from police, we've had this lengthy statement and our ago. a confusing picture earlier, as they were trying to piece together things. what do you make of the statement? it is a lengthy statement, but there are still plenty of questions that still have gone unanswered, that is understandable because they are in the early stages, and they are busy. we've talked about the vacuum of information, people will speculate. we hoping there will be some sort of
4:08 pm
information from the police later, but that isn't confirmed. hopefully it will happen and therefore we can ask some questions of the police. they might not be able to tell us much, because they are busy, but hopefully we will get some information. they did say they are alongside counterterrorism policing. and we are trying to work out what that means. and we are trying to work out what that mean— that means. when you mention it, --eole that means. when you mention it, peeple built _ that means. when you mention it, peeple built up — that means. when you mention it, people built up right. _ that means. when you mention it, people built up right. it _ that means. when you mention it, people built up right. it might - that means. when you mention it, people built up right. it might not| people built up right. it might not be a surprise those officers are involved. i don't know if we can read too much, but the chief constable did say it is something they would do with an investigation of this size and nature, and they are keeping an open mind. what do we know about those who have been impacted? three people house up for lost lives and another in critical condition in hospital. we did get an
4:09 pm
update. we were reporting about the van incident, with an attempt to run people over. we knew at that stage three people had gone to hospital, but we didn't know the nature of their injuries. sadly one of them is in a critical condition, but we know two of them suffered minor injuries. police saying it is saved to come into the city centre. they say they aren't looking for anyone else. there will be people worried and scared. some people didn't know about it and came into the city anyway. the overwhelming feeling from people i've spoken to is one of shock and one of sadness, and again, their thoughts are with the people who have died and their relatives and the people injured.— who have died and their relatives and the people injured. and the people in'ured. there is a hue and the people in'ured. there is a huge pence — and the people injured. there is a

huge police presence. _ and the people injured. there is a huge police presence. on - and the people injured. there is a huge police presence. on another street, which isn't one of the name street, there were two officers, which is quite unusual. loads of officers round and about. it is own clear if it is to give a feeling of safety and part of this ongoing investigation, which is huge. this is a big day _ investigation, which is huge. this is a big day for— investigation, which is huge. this is a big day for the _ investigation, which is huge. ti 3 is a big day for the police. some of them will be here to reassure the public, but also the police officers we can see how to make sure members of the public and journalist across into these areas. we have seen forensic officers walking down this road here. they are doing a particularjob, collecting evidence, which will take time. we saw three forensic officers in that white suits doing theirjob. there will be offices here to offer reassurance. you can hear the tannoy are brothers, there's been a lot of
4:11 pm
disruption with the trams. those police officers will be reassuring people. we police officers will be reassuring --eole. ~ . , police officers will be reassuring eo le, . ., , . people. we are 'ust referencing the time i people. we are just referencing the time i announcement, _ people. we are just referencing the time i announcement, because - people. we are just referencing the time i announcement, because all. people. we are just referencing the l time i announcement, because all of the trams are close, it is a city which run on the tram system. some of the bosses aren't going as wealth. people have come into the city centre to go to work, and a lot of shops have been shot. they are in the police called in, so it is causing disruption. the police cordoned has gone back, which means other shops had to be shut. there are more people milling about than earlier, so even in cafe is, but nowhere near as busy as on a normal day. schools are now closing, so we see more children, curiosity, wanted to know what is going on. lots of questions we still don't have the
4:12 pm
answers to, which is understandable. hopefully we will get more details from nottinghamshire police later on. if you want to keep up—to—date on. if you want to keep up—to—date on all the events, head to the bbc news after and website. we have full detailed accounts from eyewitnesses and a timeline of how events unfolded, and we will keep you up—to—date. from me in nottingham, it is back to column in the studio. —— callum. i will bring you some breaking news. we understand two of the people who died in this incident are students at nottingham university. that has been sent to us, a statement from the university saying to their students have died in this incident so clearly tragic
4:13 pm
events. we knew there was a delay in getting information on who the victims were, and probably because the university was first being informed. and now that information coming out from the university of nottingham that two of their students died in this incident. we had a statement earlier from the nottingham university students union where they said they were devastated and shocked by the tragic events, but it didn't allude to any of their fellow students being killed in this incident. but they said we stand in solidarity with our students in the wider city and our thoughts are with the families and friends of those harmed, alongside those directly and indirectly affected by the unfolding of these terrible events. we have made the decision to cancel the event this evening. in the meantime,
4:14 pm
we are continuing to work with the university and relevant authorities to understand the situation. that came from the nottingham university students union, and we've had a statement, direct from nottingham university confirming two of their students have died. we have a statement i've just been handed, from not universally, they say it is with great sadness we confirm the sudden and unexpected death of two about students following a major incident in nottingham city centre overnight. we are shocked and overstated by the news and our thoughts are with those affected, and their friends and families. there is a short thread on twitter, and they say we know it is likely to cause distress for staff and students in our community. support is available through our well—being
4:15 pm
services for any of our community who may need it. further confirmation from the university of nottingham that two of their students have died. back to you. thank you. that update, information on the identities of two of the people killed here overnight in a very much developing story, and one which is really dominating notjust the headlines, but brought the centre of nottingham to a standstill. let's bring in danny shaw, a former correspondent at the bbc. i want to ask you about the police statement we had an hour ago. what stood out for you? what police statement we had an hour ago. what stood out for you?— what stood out for you? what stood out from the — what stood out for you? what stood out from the worcester _ what stood out for you? what stood out from the worcester quotation i what stood out for you? what stood l out from the worcester quotation the

chief constable kate meynell, in which she said the police needed to determine the motives for the attack. i got a sense that the police are not really sure what is motivating these attacks and whether they are linked, but whether the same motive is behind all of them. whether indeed there was some incident in the first attack on all consider road, whether that was separate from what followed —— ilkeston road. also the fact they are still working with counterterrorism officers, to establish the facts, to understand what has gone on. it can take some hours, in some cases days before police declared an incident is terrorism —related. they are keeping an open mind, they haven't ruled it out. that is why counterterrorism
4:17 pm
officers are involved. sometimes it is quickly apparent it is not a terrorism —related incident, and sometimes it is, but clearly there are still some issues the police are working through. part of that will be the background of the suspect currently in custody. police will have already searched his home address, any other locations he has visited, seized digital devices, his smartphone, looking out contacts he's had, who he has been associating with, the website he's been visiting, to establish any link to anyone else. they say no one is involved, but that will be crucial to their inquiry to establish exactly the why, what happens in terms of evidence covering on the scene, cctv footage, and eyewitness
4:18 pm
accounts, to establish what happened. it is the wide which i think is more a puzzle. this happened. it is the wide which i think is more a puzzle.- happened. it is the wide which i think is more a puzzle. as we wait for more information, _ think is more a puzzle. as we wait for more information, give - think is more a puzzle. as we wait for more information, give us - think is more a puzzle. as we wait for more information, give us a i for more information, give us a sense of how huge the operation is enoughin sense of how huge the operation is enough in city centre, that such a large part has been closed off, businesses shutdown, numerous police cordons. as i was walking through the city centre, i saw at least two armed police officers, a highly unusual site. give us a sense of the scale, how difficult an operation it is. . , , , ., is. there are multiple sites, and with any crime, _ is. there are multiple sites, and with any crime, you _ is. there are multiple sites, and with any crime, you have - is. there are multiple sites, and with any crime, you have a - is. there are multiple sites, and| with any crime, you have a crime scene. in this case there are at least three, possibly more crime scenes that have to be sealed off, all the evidence gathered, police can't leave anything to chance. they
4:19 pm
have to be meticulous, they have to ensure no stone is left unturned, because this is a major investigation. there could be a criminal trial. they only get one chance to get the evidence. they can't come back weeks later and look at the curb, for example. did we miss something? they can't do that, they got to do it now. that is why they got to do it now. that is why the roads are sealed off. you loose want to ensure they get all the cctv footage from shops —— police want. that is vital in determining what in this inquiry. for nottinghamshire police, it goes about saying, this is a massive investigation, probably the biggest they have done for many years. i was looking at the figures. last year there were 13 killings
4:20 pm
investigated by nottinghamshire police, murder, manslaughter, in particular. here you have three in the space ofjust a few hours, with someone critically ill in hospital. that gives you a sense of the scale of this. i have also seen they have drafted in other offices, that is not unusual. there is a system of mutual aid where police forces can lend assistance. find mutual aid where police forces can lend assistance.— lend assistance. and in the statement, _ lend assistance. and in the statement, they _ lend assistance. and in the statement, they did - lend assistance. and in the i statement, they did reiterate lend assistance. and in the - statement, they did reiterate it is safe for people to come into the city centre and they aren't looking for anyone else in connection at this stage. what do you read into it? ., y* this stage. what do you read into it? . g ., ., it? that they've got someone in custod , it? that they've got someone in custody. they — it? that they've got someone in custody, they don't _ it? that they've got someone in custody, they don't believe - it? that they've got someone in l custody, they don't believe there it? that they've got someone in . custody, they don't believe there is anyone else linked to him. so that is clearly a relief for the
4:21 pm
community, people in nottingham. and now their investigation is focusing on the suspect in custody. he will have been taken into custody in the early hours. i imagine police will have conducted a safety interview, where they immediately find out whether this is linked to anything else, any other plots or plans he's aware of. and then he will have had his dna taken, his fingerprints, place a police cell, and interviews will take place after that. the police have some time to hold to question him, so i don't think that is an issue in this case. establishing the motivation is key, and the fact counterterrorism officers are still involved some hours after the events suggests that still remains a possibility. this hours after the events suggests that still remains a possibility.— still remains a possibility. as you said, this

still remains a possibility. as you said. this is _ still remains a possibility. as you said, this is probably _ still remains a possibility. as you said, this is probably the - still remains a possibility. as you said, this is probably the largest| said, this is probably the largest investigation nottinghamshire police have faced for many years. how likely is it they will bring in support from other police forces? i think they have already brought in, i have seen officers from derbyshire, south yorkshire have landed assistance. that is a very usual in this situation. this is under immense strain today, they drafted in detectives to investigated, drifting in. people have got to control the accordance, which uses up officers. it has a knock—on effect, and it won't end today. the investigation will go on for some considerable time, and there is work in community reassurance. hearing that that two other people who died is university
4:23 pm
students will create huge concern for university community. people used to go out late at night, clubbing, walking back to campus or their accommodation. that will require a lot of reassurance and police presence, so that will stretch the personnel, which is why i'm sure other forces will offer their services, and there is a system in place for that. thank you, dann . a system in place for that. thank you, danny- a very. _ system in place for that. thank you, danny- a very. very _ system in place for that. thank you, danny. a very, very difficult - system in place for that. thank you, danny. a very, very difficult day - danny. a very, very difficult day for the students population, which is huge here. a really large police presence. i can see at least five police officers, several police vans. we can see forensic officers in their white year. there were some

forensic teams further down the road. this operation stretching for many miles, right across the city centre, over a vast area. that is it from me, back to the studio. samantha, thank you. we will get more as the day progresses. earlier our course mark spoke to an eyewitness called them —— correspondent. you may find some of the details distressing. what did you see, where and when? 5.30, i was going to work and a white van pulled up alongside me. i thought, that's weird. this was at the theatre royal, just at the corner? yeah, just on the corner. and he looked in his mirror and saw a police car behind him. he then... quickened up.
4:25 pm
there were two people turning the corner. he went straight into these two people. the woman went on the kerb, the man went up in the air and there was such a bang. i wish i never saw it, it's really shaken me up. i went over. perhaps i shouldn't have gone over, but i wanted to see if i could help. that's it, really. but he backed up after he hit the man and the woman, and then drove up upper parliament street. and the police followed him? yes. and this was at 5.30 this morning? yes.
4:26 pm
if one of my colleagues had been there earlier, she would have been knocked over. i took her to university and then i went back to work. did you see what happened to the man and woman who were hit? the woman was sitting up on the kerb. she looked ok. the man was lying down, but then he got up and sat on the side, waiting for an ambulance. i can't believe he was able to get up. he was bleeding quite a lot? yes, i would say so. how are you doing? um, shaky. well, i've never seen anything like it. ijust managed to look around and saw it happening. i wish i hadn't looked around. are you doing ok? yeah, i feel better now. my boss gave me a hot
