looking to representatives will be looking to bring our communities together. the groups will do that in the coming hours and days. there are practical things that need to be done. a lot of the city is closed. the transport network is down. we will be working with colleagues and stakeholders to try to direct people, get the right information out there, and make sure people can get home in the first instance. what communication have you had with the police as they go about their investigation? i you had with the police as they go about their investigation?- you had with the police as they go about their investigation? i want to sa a about their investigation? i want to say a massive _ about their investigation? i want to say a massive thank— about their investigation? i want to say a massive thank you _ about their investigation? i want to say a massive thank you to - say a massive thank you to nottinghamshire police and the emergency services. nobody expects to go to work and have to deal with this, even as a police officer. it is not a routine thing, evidently and thankfully. they have excelled themselves. they have been working really hard to keep us informed.

4:32 pm
over the coming weeks. i'm sure there will be supporting at the university to help those students and the coming days. then, thank you forjoining us. that is ben bradley, mp for mansfield and leader of nottingham show county council. we have been hearing eyewitness accounts. joshua fenner described police approaching a man in a van. i woke up at 530 and i heard some shouting outside. usually i hear a lot of stuff on that road so i chose to look out the window to see what was going on. at that sort of time it could be anything. i see a police van, police car, even, and a police officer walking alongside the car as it was slowly approaching a white van that had just been put down the road. then i heard the policeman shout to the guy in the van, get out of the car, then proceeded by the sound of a gunshot, and at that
4:33 pm
point i chose to remove myself from the situation and go back to bed. my line of vision got cut off as they started walking towards the van, so from that point onwards there is not much i can give you in terms of what is already known, but that is what i have seen. is already known, but that is what i have seen-— is already known, but that is what i have seen. . . , ., , , , have seen. that was an eyewitness. let's no have seen. that was an eyewitness. let's go live — have seen. that was an eyewitness. let's go live now — have seen. that was an eyewitness. let's go live now to _ have seen. that was an eyewitness. let's go live now to ray _ have seen. that was an eyewitness. let's go live now to ray cole, - have seen. that was an eyewitness. let's go live now to ray cole, the i let's go live now to ray cole, the founder and managing director of brave, who provide emotional support with council and therapy for victims of trauma. thank you forjoining us. first of all we now know that two students are among the victims. a really difficult time for the students' friends and families. what support they need after a tragic incident like this? i support they need after a tragic incident like this?— support they need after a tragic incident like this? i would say the bi est incident like this? i would say the biggest thing _ incident like this? i would say the biggest thing is — incident like this? i would say the biggest thing is to _ incident like this? i would say the biggest thing is to talk _ incident like this? i would say the biggest thing is to talk about - incident like this? i would say the biggest thing is to talk about it. l biggest thing is to talk about it. the biggest thing is to make sure that we are not hiding our feelings and actually the reality that this is in all of us, the fact that it
4:34 pm
has happened so close to home, everyone is really feeling it, and i think the one thing we need to remember is that it is ok to be affected. it is ok to feel. it is ok to feel the effects of what has happened, because it is severe. i think being able to trust people who are professionally capable of being able to handle your trauma is really important. trust somebody with your feelings. it is really important. {iii feelings. it is really important. of course we are talking about students here who are young, they are sitting exams, they are getting ready for the end of term. does the university now need to help those people and offer counselling, or the need to find the help amongst their friends and families? i find the help amongst their friends and families?— and families? i think from what we have heard — and families? i think from what we have heard that _ and families? i think from what we have heard that the _ and families? i think from what we have heard that the universities . and families? i think from what we | have heard that the universities are able to provide a lot of support and able to provide a lot of support and a lot of counselling themselves. i do want to clarify that brave doesn't provide counselling, we

4:43 pm
students from the university of nottingham have died in this attack. we are assuming they are young. university of nottingham does take on mature students, but the assumption is that these are to young people who have died in this attack. as we have been hearing it is tragic news for this big university city. they have got nottingham trent there as well. these two students who attend the university of nottingham have died. we don't know whether they are male or female. we don't know whether they are male orfemale. we don't we don't know whether they are male or female. we don't know their names just yet. we are still waiting for that information. i think it will be a bit longer before we get that. we are just trying to take in some reaction to this here in the bbc newsroom. we have been getting some statements from the first of all, the university of nottingham, saying
4:44 pm
with great sadness they had to announce the death of two of their students. we have had a statement from the university of nottingham like one branch, one of the student unions, and they say that we are devastated to hear about the tragic events that have led to the deaths of three people, including two of our students and injured three others. our thoughts are with the family and friends of all the victims of this attack. we heard about an hour ago from the university of nottingham student union, telling me they had cancelled a ball tonight and saying their thoughts and prayers went out to wars of those affected, saying they were devastated by this news. . this was before the statement saying that
4:45 pm
two students had died. when we were reading that statements earlier we went saying in this on—air because went saying in this on—air because we didn't want to speculate, but they did become some concern that that two of the students who went to that two of the students who went to that university could be affected. the statement was very sad in its tone, for want of a better term. we are still trying to get some more details on this incident butjust repeating what we broke here about 30 minutes ago, that two students from the university of nottingham died in the attack. thank you very much. this story broke in the very early hours of this morning. as you would expect it was unclear what was happening and where. we know the first incident took lace around 4am. since then we have been trying to figure out how those events are
4:46 pm
folded and where they took place. our verified team have been working hard on that. courtney bembridge has got the details. around 4am the call came in to say to people had been found dead in the street. to give you an idea about where the incident took place in relation to the rest of the city, thatis relation to the rest of the city, that is marked here. two people found dead in ilkeston road. there are three other areas we are going to focus on, including where people were injured. another man was found dead and also where the 31 your man was arrested. let's look at those in more detail. we have the area heading into the city where two people were found dead. this is a major road heading into the city centre. it is amiss of houses and businesses. once we get into the city centre it is where the second incident is believed to have took place. this is milton street. it is a very pedestrian pedestrian
4:47 pm
friendly street. this is where a van is believed to have hit three people who are currently in hospital. there are also large parts of the city cordoned off with police investigating. we have a third incident at magdala road, which is to the north. three separate incidents but police are very much treating them as part of the same incident. as you can see they are spread across the city and the distances between these are about ten minutes by car. the police are still trying to work out exactly what happened and build a complex timeline of how it all unfolded. there is so much information in detail on this story. it is all on our live blog, on our website or on the bbc news app. lots of detail including some eyewitness accounts, some of which are pretty harrowing. we have been getting reaction throughout the day from people here in the city centre and like the
4:48 pm
gentleman who runs the tram system. there has been a lot of reaction coming in from senior politicians, including the prime minister, who was very quick to react to developing events this morning. he tweeted a statement on the incident, rishi sunak, saying he wanted to thank the police and emergency services for their ongoing response to the shocking incident in nottingham this morning. he said, i am being kept updated on developments. the police must be given the time to undertake their work. my thoughts are with those injured and the family and loved ones of those who have lost their lives. ijust want ones of those who have lost their lives. i just want to show the scene behind me, because it is happening right now. we have seen these forensic officers all over the city centre. in particular behind me, they were here about 20 minutes ago. they are back here again and they are also round the corner. they really are combing the streets. we don't know what they are looking for, but they have been quite a few of them out on the street. really
4:49 pm
very much an ongoing police operation. you can see it in action behind me. we have also had reaction from the energy secretary, grant shapps, who has commented on the incident. ~ , , ., . incident. absolutely horrific. i feel so deeply _ incident. absolutely horrific. i feel so deeply for _ incident. absolutely horrific. i feel so deeply for the - incident. absolutely horrific. i | feel so deeply for the families, incident. absolutely horrific. i - feel so deeply for the families, for the communities involved. it's hard to comprehend what has happened and i think we do have to give the police time to investigate and make sure that they are able to find out. i know the prime minister and home secretary, both of whom i spoke to this morning, are monitoring this by the hour, and our thoughts are with every involved. that the hour, and our thoughts are with every involved-— every involved. that was grant sha - s, every involved. that was grant shapps, the — every involved. that was grant shapps, the energy _ every involved. that was grant shapps, the energy secretary. | every involved. that was grant. shapps, the energy secretary. we also heard from the home secretary, suella braverman. she posted on social media saying, i am shocked and saddened that three people have lost their lives today in nottingham. my thoughts are with those affected by this incident. she went on to say, i have spoken to the
4:50 pm
nottinghamshire police chief constable and amit receiving updates. we have also heard from the labour leader, said keir starmer. he has commented on the incident. he was speaking at an event at london tech week. two people here will probably be seeing the news filtering through. i don't think we can start the session but out there has been a serious incident in nottingham this morning. information is still coming — nottingham this morning. information is still coming through _ nottingham this morning. information is still coming through but _ nottingham this morning. information is still coming through but it - nottingham this morning. information is still coming through but it has - is still coming through but it has just been reported that three people have lost their lives. i'm sure i speak to everybody in this room and saying that we would like to send our thoughts to everybody affected and to the emergency services, who are responding to this as we speak. we will get to take in just a moment, but ijust think we will get to take in just a moment, but i just think that when there is something that serious happening in nottingham, wejust need to acknowledge it. we send our

thoughts to those that are affected and thank those who are responding to it, on behalf of all of us. just to it, on behalf of all of us. just to remind _ to it, on behalf of all of us. just to remind you _ to it, on behalf of all of us. just to remind you of _ to it, on behalf of all of us. just to remind you of the _ to it, on behalf of all of us. just to remind you of the shocking events that have taken place here in nottingham earlier today. a man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, after three people were killed in the centre of nottingham earlier on this morning. police have given us more details. they did tell us that they were called to ilkeston road to just after 4am. two people were found dead in the street. police were then sent to milton street where a van driver allegedly tried to run over three people. they are now being treated in hospital. in magdala road, another person, a man was also found dead. a huge area of the city centre has been cordoned off while police investigate the three incidents, which they have said they do believed to be linked. police have called them horrific and tragic. the investigation is certainly very much ongoing. we are
4:52 pm
hoping to get some more details a little laterfrom hoping to get some more details a little later from nottinghamshire police. forensic officers are hard at work behind me. this isn't one of the sites ijust mentioned. we are here on upper parliament street. there was a chord in here very early on. as i mentioned a short time ago, this tram was cool to stop and stay where it was. that was at 530 this morning. the owner of the tram company, tramlink, got the call to suspend all of their operations immediately. that tram was stopped exactly where it was and hasn't moved. he is saying that he thinks they might get the all clear later on today. with this operation still ongoing we just don't know the timings of that. a huge police presence, i can come out six police officers and several police vans. this cordon was widened a little earlier and that has had a huge knock—on effect. people have had to take big detours around the city centre to get where they are going.
4:53 pm
businesses have had to shut. very few people around and about, you can see a few, but hardly the numbers they would be at this time of day on summer's afternoon. we have been speaking to a few eyewitnesses about what they saw earlier today. letter from one of them. what did you see, where and when? 5.30, i was going to work and a white van pulled up alongside me. i thought, that's weird. this was at the theatre royal, just at the corner? yeah, just on the corner. and he looked in his mirror and saw a police car behind him. he then... quickened up. there were two people turning the corner. he went straight into these two people. the woman went on the kerb,
4:54 pm
the man went up in the air and there was such a bang. i wish i never saw it, it's really shaken me up. i went over. perhaps i shouldn't have gone over, but i wanted to see if i could help. that's it, really. but he backed up after he hit the man and the woman, and then drove up upper parliament street. and the police followed him? yes. and this was at 5.30 this morning? yes. if one of my colleagues had been there earlier, she would have been knocked over. i took her to university and then i went back to work. did you see what happened to the man and woman who were hit? the woman was sitting up on the kerb.
4:55 pm
she looked ok. the man was lying down, but then he got up and sat on the side, waiting for an ambulance. i can't believe he was able to get up. he was bleeding quite a lot? yes, i would say so. how are you doing? um, shaky. well, i've never seen anything like it. ijust managed to look around and saw it happening. i wish i hadn't looked around. are you doing ok? yeah, i feel better now. my boss gave me a hot drink with sugar. that was our eyewitness, a really difficult day for her. a lot for her to diejust. police really difficult day for her. a lot for her to die just. police really want to
4:56 pm
talk to anybody who saw what happened this morning at any of those three crime scenes, and anything that may have looked suspicious. the number to call... that is a dedicated emergency phone line set up by nottinghamshire police. that police investigation, clearly a lot of work to do there, probably one of the biggest investigations as will hearing a little earlier, that nottinghamshire police have ever had to face. lots of officers called in from surrounding forces to provide extra support, just the sheer manpower of people needed on the ground to police these cordons. daniel sanford has been looking at the motivation.
4:57 pm
clearly because of the method, the stabbing and the vehicle, that is a very important question. you can see behind me the van, from which one of the people was arrested early this morning, you can see there are dense on the front of the van. there is damage to the window, it does look as if that ban might have run into people. the question that has to be dealt with, in terms of whether it is terrorism —related, is what is the alleged motivation? is it political or religious? that is something that is still being considered by people in charge of counterterrorism and the uk. it is the national director for counterterror terrorism who has to make the decision. i think the problem in this case is that there are some issues around the suspect, who may also perhaps a mental health issues. there has got to be quite a difficult decision as to whether there is a political or religious motivation, allegedly, or whether this is an issue around mental health or some other issue. i think it is still early days to be
4:58 pm
absolutely clear what the motivation is behind these alleged murders. daniel sanford there. let's just take it back to the newsroom and pursue over to callan. i think we can expect a news conference in the not—too—distant future can expect a news conference in the not—too—dista nt future from can expect a news conference in the not—too—distant future from the police. we are just waiting for some confirmation. in the meantime i want to remind viewers that are just joining us that to students who went to the university of nottingham, have died in this incident. we have had a statement from the university of nottingham branch, saying we are little older, but it is hard to tell. we are st branch, saying we are devastated that this has led to the of nottingham branch, saying we are devastated that this has led to the deaths of two students and injuring deaths of two students and injuring three others. our thoughts are with three others. our thoughts are with the all of the victims of this the all of the victims of this horrific attack. we had another horrific attack. we had another
4:59 pm
statement from the university of statement from the university of nottingham student union earlier on, nottingham student union earlier on, saying that they were devastated and saying that they were devastated and shocked by these tragic events and shocked by these tragic events and that they had cancelled their ball that they had cancelled their ball this evening. i wonder if actually, this evening. i wonder if actually, at the time the statement was at the time the statement was released, this was about an hour ago released, this was about an hour ago before news broke from the before news broke from the university of nottingham that two of university of nottingham that two of their students had been killed, if their students had been killed, if indeed the university of nottingham indeed the university of nottingham students union had been informed students union had been informed that this point that two of their that this point that two of their fellow students had died in this fellow students had died in this attack. it is devastating for this attack. it is devastating for this city. it is synonymous with its two city. it is synonymous with its two big universities, the university of big universities, the university of nottingham and nottingham trent nottingham and nottingham trent university. we are assuming that university. we are assuming that these are two young people that have these are two young people that have died, of course we know that the died, of course we know that the university of nottingham accepts university of nottingham accepts mature students. so there is a mature students. so there is a chance that they may well be a chance that they may well be a
