three people were killed in the city in the early hours of the morning. in the past hour, the university of nottingham is confirmed that two of their students following what witnesses described as a knife and van attack. asi—year—old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. police say they are working with counterterrorism officers but keeping an open mind over the incidents. officers say they were called to wilkerson road at 4am where two people were found dead in the street. officers were then sent to the milton street where a van driver allegedly tried to run over three people. one man is in a critical condition, two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries. at magdala road, meanwhile another person, a man, was also found dead. a big part of the city has been cordoned off while the police investigate the incident.
5:02 pm
this was ilkeston road this lunchtime. and this was that same street early this morning. police had found two people dead. a local man told the bbc he hurt cries for help and a bloodcurdling scream before seeing a man and a woman stabbed multiple times. it was the beginning of a sequence of events that led to the lockdown of nottingham city centre. officers were soon in milton street, right in the heart of the city, where it's claimed that a van tried to run over pedestrians. lynn saw it happen. two people, turning the corner, he went straight into these two people. the woman went on the kerb. the man went up in the air. there was such a bang. i wish i never saw it, because it's really shaken me up. police later said that a third person had also been hit. all three are said to be in hospital.
5:03 pm
what one is in critical condition. the woman was sitting up on the kerb. she looked ok. the man was lying down, but then he got up. he sat on the side, waiting for an ambulance. but ijust can't believe he was able to get up after the head wound. there was also a body discovered in magdala street, just to the north of the city centre. police are yet to comment on possible motives, they're working with counterterrorism officers. the chief constable said... there's been reaction across the political spectrum. we

5:05 pm
saying... there's a huge police operation, very much ongoing here in the city centre. i'll step out the way so you can take a look atjust one of the sites currently cordoned off. we are on the corner of upper parliament street, and this is the theatre landmark in the city centre. this trend has been here since 5:30am this morning, when the tram operator got the call from police to shut down all operations, not one tram has run through the city since then. this cordon is actually one of the sites we've been talking about, one of the three sites, this is another, so it's not clear why this is such a focus of the police investigation. but looking at the police behind me, i can count 9—10 just at this site,
5:06 pm
several police vans, as well, and this is replicated in three other sites at least across the city centre as police comb the streets a few minutes ago, forensics officers behind me were checking out that drain, there have been road sweepers coming since then and clearing that up. police did release a statement a couple hours ago, let me bring that to you. they said, "police are keeping an open mind on the motives of a city attack which has left three people dead, but at this time believe there is no one else outstanding in connection with the incidents. police were called to ilkeston road just after 4am after two people were killed, officers were then called to an incident in milton street where a van attempted to run over three people, they said one man is in hospital in a critical condition, while two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries. a man was also found dead at macula road shortly afterwards."
5:07 pm
police have arrested a 31—year—old man on suspicion of murder and he remains in police custody. they said a number of major roads in the city centre will remain closed as a thorough police investigation is under way. they say police are not looking for anyone else in regard to the attacks. a team of... this is a tragic series of events which has led to the lives of three innocent people being taken and left another member of the public in a critical condition in hospital. she said, "my thoughts are with all families affected by this shocking incident and will be working extremely hard to understand what has happened. she said, "we are at the early stages of the investigation and need to determine the motives behind these attacks and will keep the public updated as soon as we are able to say more. most go she said, "we are keeping an open mind as we investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidences," and
5:08 pm
they are working alongside counterterrorism police to establish the facts as normal in these circumstances. "we do have a man in custody," she went on to say that the city centre is safe and many people out here on the streets, more than they were earlier, but nowhere near the numbers you'd expect earlier this time of day on a lovely summer's evening. we are accepting a statement in 20 minutes' time, at about 5:30pm, and we'll bring that to you live with hopefully more information about those events and circumstances around that met when we get to that. we've also been speaking to ben bradley, the mp for mansfield. let's listen to him. i’m mansfield. let's listen to him. i'm in shock, i— mansfield. let's listen to him. i'm in shock, i can't _ mansfield. let's listen to him. in in shock, i can't believe... i'm the leader of nottingham city council,
5:09 pm
we've been working really hard to support our colleagues in the city and nottinghamshire police who are managing all this. but absolute shock, it's an absolutely awful event for the city, our hearts go out to the families and victims involved. and as you said, it's now been confirmed that to the university of nottingham students are amongst the three who've been killed. awfulfor such are amongst the three who've been killed. awful for such young are amongst the three who've been killed. awfulfor such young lives being in the wrong place at the wrong time, so really emotional and difficult day. wrong time, so really emotional and difficult day-— difficult day. everybody that we've soken to, difficult day. everybody that we've spoken to, both _ difficult day. everybody that we've spoken to, both samantha - difficult day. everybody that we've spoken to, both samantha at - difficult day. everybody that we've spoken to, both samantha at the l spoken to, both samantha at the scene and all the eyewitnesses say it's come as a huge shock because nottingham is a place they feel safe. is that how you regard the city that you know so well? i think nottingham _ city that you know so well? i think nottingham has _ city that you know so well? i think nottingham has a _ city that you know so well? i think nottingham has a fantastic - city that you know so well? i think - nottingham has a fantastic community and people feel safe, and people will come together off the back of it. but that feeling of duty and support, and safety means this is more of a shock. it is not what you
5:10 pm
expect to see in your own city or community, and it seems distant until it's on your doorstep, it's really awful. there's a lot of work to be done to support people now, to reassure. police have confirmed that they are not looking for anybody, they've arrested who they've needed to arrest, the incident is over in that sense and people should feel safe. there's a vigil this evening at 5pm at st. peter's church, in the city centre, and i think nottingham will come together and support everyone. figs will come together and support eve one. a ., everyone. as you say, a vigil taking lace at everyone. as you say, a vigil taking place at 5pm _ everyone. as you say, a vigil taking place at 5pm with — everyone. as you say, a vigil taking place at 5pm with lots _ everyone. as you say, a vigil taking place at 5pm with lots of _ everyone. as you say, a vigil taking place at 5pm with lots of people - place at 5pm with lots of people expected to attend. how does the city now go about repairing and grieving? these two young people, we don't know yet the third victim, but how are people suffering as a result of what's happened today?
5:11 pm
it's all about reaching out in the coming days, and police are offering a numberfor people coming days, and police are offering a number for people who are looking information and support, they'll haveit information and support, they'll have it to share, it's on my social media. and as i say, representatives will be looking to support and bring our communities together and other community groups and organisations in the coming hours and days. also obviously there are practical things that need to be done, large areas of the city are still closed off, the transport network is still shut down, so we will be working with our city colleagues to try and manage that, direct people to get the information out there and make sure people get home in the first instance. people get home in the first instance-— people get home in the first instance. ~ ., ., ., instance. what communication have ou had instance. what communication have you had with — instance. what communication have you had with the _ instance. what communication have you had with the police _ instance. what communication have you had with the police as _ instance. what communication have you had with the police as they - instance. what communication have you had with the police as they go l you had with the police as they go about their investigation? how up—to—date are you? i about their investigation? how up-to-date are you?— about their investigation? how up-to-date are you? i want to give a massive thank—

5:13 pm
didn't grow up then, hopefully they can still do that. nottingham is an excellent university... as i say, whether it's excellent university... as i say, whether its local councils are in the micro universities, or institutions in the city, i'm sure there'll be some other places to help those students, they'll make their students feel safe.— help those students, they'll make their students feel safe. there is a vi . il takin: their students feel safe. there is a vigil taking place _ their students feel safe. there is a vigiltaking place here _ their students feel safe. there is a vigiltaking place here in _ their students feel safe. there is a vigil taking place here in the - their students feel safe. there is a vigil taking place here in the city i vigil taking place here in the city centre this evening. let's show you the scene live there now as people reach out to pay their own condolences. this is outside st. peter's church, and this is really of course touched so many people in this city centre, which we now know have suffered the loss of three people, two of those being students
5:14 pm
from the university of nottingham. there's a huge student population here, some 80,000 or so, so that will really touch the hearts of so many. and what is normally a very peaceful city centre, never seen the likes of any of this. so lots of people coming out this evening to pay their respects to those who have been affected, the three people who have lost their lives, one in a serious condition in hospital, and two others wounded and in hospital. let's talk to danny sure, a former correspondent at the bbc. i know you've been following these develops closely, let's go over some of the detail on that police statement we got a couple hours ago, we now know we will hear from the police in a press conference in around 15 minutes or so, but what do you make of the detail we've had from that statement, in particular the fact that they are working with counterterrorism police, though they do stress at the moment they do not
5:15 pm
know the motive behind this? danny, can you hear me? apologies, es. i danny, can you hear me? apologies, yes- ithink— danny, can you hear me? apologies, yes. i think what _ danny, can you hear me? apologies, yes. i think what was _ danny, can you hear me? apologies, yes. i think what was significant - yes. i think what was significant about the statement is that police are trying to determine the motives, putting in plural by the chief constable, and i thought that was significant because you've got separate attacks taking place here, you have an attack on the two university students, then you've got the attempt to run over three others at the scenes, then you have a man being found dead as well, and there may be other incidents as we don't know. do all of them have the same motive, or was there something initially that then lead to the other incidents as mike so i think people are trying to work that out, they've got a lot of evidence from
5:16 pm
they've got a lot of evidence from the scene, they have cctv evidence and other footage, the scene, they have cctv evidence and otherfootage, as well. so in terms of evidence gathering of what happened, i don't think that'll be too difficult, though it'll take time and they'll have to search meticulously. but in terms of establishing the why this happened, i think that something police are still trying to determine. it hasn't been determined a terrorism incident, but they are working with counterterrorism police which suggests a possibility and they're keeping an open mind. one of the golden rules for police officers early in the investigations is to never close off any avenues or possibilities. retain an open mind, there might be some theory they have that's the main line of inquiry they need to retain an open mind about what possibilities might lie behind it. and that's why establishing the identity of the suspect, it sounds like they probably have that, they know he is 31 years of age,
5:17 pm
establishing his identity and background, has he got a criminal record? what is on his computer, his laptop, his smartphone, who she's been mixing or associating with? all those things will have been going on in the background in the past few hours. we don't see that activity but it's definitely taking place, and it should give police a better picture of this person and why it's alleged he carried out what he did. when there's an awful incident like this, we often hear very quickly whether there was a terror motive very quickly behind it. there's a lot of information together to establish whether or not that is the case, certainly this incident, they've had a man in custody since they've had a man in custody since the early hours of this morning. what happens then? establishing whether it's _ what happens then? establishing whether it's a _ what happens then? establishing
5:18 pm
whether it's a terrorism - what happens then? establishing whether it's a terrorism incident l what happens then? establishing | whether it's a terrorism incident is something that's only actually done ljy something that's only actually done by the senior national coordinator of counterterrorism, a man called tim jakes, he's the only one who can make that call which is why nottinghamshire police will be in contact with him and his colleagues, and that may take some hours, and some cases it can take days. but when the suspect is in custody, he will be brought in, i expect there will be brought in, i expect there will be brought in, i expect there will be a safety interview because at 5:30am when he was brought into custody, police didn't know whether he was part of a group or a wider network, ora he was part of a group or a wider network, or a gang, whether as part of a coordinated series of attacks, police had no idea, and the suspicion at that stage may well have been that this is a terrorism incident and it's part of a group, so they will need it —— will immediately need to question him about that and get dna taken, and he'll be in a police cell before
5:19 pm
he's ready to be questioned in the presence of a lawyer, and that can take some hours. but i expect we will have a update from the police about the progress of the investigation when we have that press conference, because nottinghamshire police, it's a force that's used to dealing with major incidents and investigations, it won't have one on this scale for many years, but they have experienced detectives who i'm sure will also be drawing on the support of officers as is necessary. we will also be drawing on the support of officers as is necessary.- of officers as is necessary. we are expecting that _ of officers as is necessary. we are expecting that police _ of officers as is necessary. we are expecting that police news - expecting that police news conference in ten minutes' time around 5:30pm, huge story, dominating the headlines here in the uk. so of course we will bring that to our viewers as soon as we get that. danny, in the meantime, the
5:20 pm
police operation here on the ground of course very much ongoing, i'll step out of the way because of the police cordoned here in the square has been lifted, you can't quite see it but one of the... that's been removed in the past few minutes so people are walking freely across this area now, but the streets are parallel to it, they are still closed off, this one on upper parliament street and the one parallel to that. how long does this kind of thing take? we saw behind me some forensics officers looking in the drains behind me, doesn't look like it might start to possibly wind down now to try and reopen the city centre has been shot for all —— shot for the whole day? lt’s centre has been shot for all -- shot for the whole day?— for the whole day? it's been 12 hours or so — for the whole day? it's been 12 hours or so but _ for the whole day? it's been 12 hours or so but you _ for the whole day? it's been 12 hours or so but you must - for the whole day? it's been 12 - hours or so but you must remember this is a major crying, and you have at least three crime scenes stash a major crime. and where there is
5:21 pm
someone who's died, been murdered, you would expect that the police would go over that crime scene to ensure that every single item of potential evidence is examined and taken away, and so on. you've got to look and try and find everything. the number of cases i've covered, the officers will find something on the officers will find something on the scene, and a drain, and a hedge, thrown away, a scrap of paper, they can find it but it requires real diligence on the part of officers and real perseverance to uncover the evidence and to make sure that no stone is left unturned.— stone is left unturned. danny, a hue stone is left unturned. danny, a huge investigation _ stone is left unturned. danny, a huge investigation now - stone is left unturned. danny, a huge investigation now under. huge investigation now under
