picture on the left of your screen. so we are do to get that in the next little while. danny shaw former bb speedy home affairs correspondent is waiting to talk to me as we wait for either of those life press conferences to start. danny, it has been a quite awful date, take us through what we know so far. it been a quite awful date, take us through what we know so far. it has been a terrible _ through what we know so far. it has been a terrible day. _ through what we know so far. it has been a terrible day. the _ through what we know so far. it has been a terrible day. the events - been a terrible day. the events unfolded in the early hours of this morning at around four o'clock this morning at around four o'clock this morning when police were alerted to calls that two people had been found deadin calls that two people had been found dead in the street on ilkeston road at around four o'clock this morning. a man was later found at around four o'clock this morning. a man was laterfound dead at around four o'clock this morning. a man was later found dead some distance away in magdala street and that officers were called to another street in milton street in nottingham were of van according to police had attempted to run over three people. we know two of the

three people. we know two of the three people. we know two of the three people who died were university students from nottingham university and we know that one of the people injured in the attack and the people injured in the attack and the incident with the van is critically in hospital and two others suffered less serious injuries. we don't have details about the other person who died at the moment. hopefully the press conference will reveal some more details. for police they say a 31—year—old man is in custody, arrest and under suspicion of murder and no one else is involved and you can see from nottingham that some of the cordons have been listed although police have kept a pretty tight grip on things in the city centre as they do their investigations, gather evidence and so on. i think the key for police and what it is puzzling everyone is to find out what was behind this attack. what were the motives, what was the reason for it. it appears on
5:32 pm
the face of it, a sort of random attack, and the centre of nottingham but we do not know that for sure. the incidents are links but were at the motives for each of the incidents the same or was the first instant something specific which later triggered the others? we do not know. ~ . ., ~ ., , ., not know. what we do know is that anti-terror— not know. what we do know is that anti-terror police _ not know. what we do know is that anti-terror police have _ not know. what we do know is that anti-terror police have been - not know. what we do know is that l anti-terror police have been working anti—terror police have been working alongside nottinghamshire police, what have they been saying about that and what should be read into that and what should be read into that or not?— that and what should be read into that or not? * , , . , that or not? because these incidents initially bore — that or not? because these incidents initially bore the _ that or not? because these incidents initially bore the hallmarks _ that or not? because these incidents initially bore the hallmarks of - that or not? because these incidents initially bore the hallmarks of a - initially bore the hallmarks of a terrorist attacks and we became used to those sadly in recent years not just in the uk but abroad as well which involves the use of new orleans and —— use of knives and vehicles and it would be a proper
5:33 pm
course to alert there colleagues and until they convinced establish a clear motive i think counterterrorism lease will be working alongside nottinghamshire please know that is what the police have set in their statement. it has not been declared as a terrorism instant. i can only happen when the senior national coordinator, tim jakes, who is based in scotland yard decides whether this is a terrorism incident and that means it is in an incident and that means it is in an incident designed international government organisation, intimidation, and the purpose is to advance clinical religious or ideological course and we do not know yet. ideological course and we do not know et. ,, ._ ideological course and we do not know et. ,, ., . , know yet. stay there. for any viewers joining _ know yet. stay there. for any viewersjoining us _ know yet. stay there. for any viewersjoining us i _ know yet. stay there. for any viewersjoining us i want - know yet. stay there. for any viewersjoining us i want to l know yet. stay there. for any - viewersjoining us i want to explain what you see on the screen because the right hand side of the screen we are waiting for police update, the latest on their investigations through the hours since those
5:34 pm
attacks and to the left we also are expecting from mps representing the city thereof nottingham. so we will wait for both but as we do wait it is worth turning to one of the eyewitnesses we heard from a little earlier, one of our correspondence on the ground has spoken to one of the eyewitnesses called man city. i want to play you what she described that she actually saw. you may find some of the details here distressing. he went straight into these two people. the woman went on the kerb, the man went up in the air. it was such a bang... i wish i never saw it, it's really shaken me up. welcome and thank you forjoining us
5:35 pm
here. we wait to hear the latest updates from the police but in terms of the way an investigation like this will have evolved through the day given that that's happened in this early hours take us through what the schemes of detectives would have been doing. first what the schemes of detectives would have been doing.— have been doing. first off i would like to send _ have been doing. first off i would like to send my _ have been doing. first off i would like to send my condolences - have been doing. first off i would like to send my condolences and | like to send my condolences and heart felt sorrows to the families and friends of anyone involved. from the police perspective they would have been working on and looking to identify the motive and the connection between the person who has been arrested and obsolete the three victims in the victim of the vehicle attack. and using a number of strategies involved in the investigation trying to identify witnesses to each incident working at cctv area and and the movements of everyone involved because that would be key looking at the movements of way before the incident tried to piece and ate together any things before and looking to see if
5:36 pm
they came from and that would be key to find out what happened there. also looking at the full forensic examination obviously there is multiple scenes i know there has been a number of dresses that have been a number of dresses that have been search and they will be conducted a sweep up the whole area especially search offices and dog searches going on throughout. but they will also be looking like things on social media what reports on social media and intelligence in sort of trying to piece together what is known about all of the persons involved in the will be liaison officers to support families evolves. salute that is where counterterrorism officers will come and may be purely from a resources point of view but it will be imported. the police are keeping an open mind because they have to. they have to look at every possible motive and look at every sort of hypotheses on why this attack may have happened. i hypotheses on why this attack may have happened-— hypotheses on why this attack may have happened. i will come back to what ou have happened. i will come back to what you reference _ have happened. i will come back to what you reference with _ have happened. i will come back to what you reference with the - what you reference with the anti—terror police in a moment or so but you mentioned that there are
5:37 pm
multiple scenes of the attacks that we saw. the police very quickly said they were linked.— they were linked. they obviously, they were linked. they obviously, the olice they were linked. they obviously, the police obsolete _ they were linked. they obviously, the police obsolete seem - they were linked. they obviously, the police obsolete seem to - they were linked. they obviously, the police obsolete seem to have| the police obsolete seem to have information that has not yet been released to the public yet which is 100 is accurate because they need to get as much evidence as possible to honestly prove that the incidents are all linked to the steps of the two deceased man and female and they obviously got information quite early on how they are linked that do cctv or eyewitnesses we will wait to find out. in terms of obviously the people that were apparently waiting at the bus up obviously they will need to see if there any connection between any of the victim groups were also between the suspect and the victims and that will be key. do not know yet whether it is a complete stranger random, whether it was a mental health issue involved from the perpetrator. two of the deceased are students and the perpetrator is 31 stops that again will be a quite key question. about
5:38 pm
who is a 31—year—old and how are they connected and if they are completely random attack and some eyewitness reports are horrendous and horrific. both witnesses will be key in describing what the perpetrator and obsolete in assuming that the police keep an open mind on whether anyone else's action linked to the person that has been arrested. the other people may be assisted him in some with. he was arrested quite quickly which is good work by the police but maybe others to the person who obscene may have information or know the persons movements before which be key to examine and investigate. the actual details of the _ examine and investigate. the actual details of the individual _ examine and investigate. the actual details of the individual incidents . details of the individual incidents they are very, very distressing. they are horrific. i have been a homicide detective for over 17 years. i have dealt with double murders myself. the witnesses who saw this will be very traumatised and will need various, lots of
5:39 pm
support from various police officers and obviously other agencies. the timing of the attack as well. four a: m.. timing of the attack as well. four a:m.. it does not tend to suggest it is a terror related incident. most terror —related incidents will occur at a time when there are more people around. to have maximum impact and widespread media coverage. but i think we have to wait and see what the police say at that conference. i am sure more details will come over the next 2a hours but it sounds like nottingham police and all of the other support services have done a fantasticjob and gathering as much of it into as a half to save the incidents are linked in august of the person has been arrested so they will be subject to interviews over the next day or so. the police cannot hold hold someone for more than 2a hours without an extension and then going to court for further time to invest get the circumstances. so because of the serious nature of the instant i would suspect the suspect to be in
5:40 pm
custody for a number of days whilst the police seek to interview him, if he is 50 interviewed. they may be issues in custody that they obviously will deal with. but it will take time but it will stay there because i want to put onto the screen as we are waiting for this news conference. pictures of a vi . il for this news conference. pictures of a vigil going — for this news conference. pictures of a vigil going on _ for this news conference. pictures of a vigil going on in _ for this news conference. pictures of a vigil going on in memory - for this news conference. pictures of a vigil going on in memory of i for this news conference. pictures i of a vigil going on in memory of the victims of this attack. as you can see, people gathering there. as the st. peter's church in the city centre to pay their respects. the bishop of nottingham they saying it had been a very difficult day for nottingham think it is truly her tragic incident and my heart he said, my thoughts and my prayers go out to those who are directly affected in the city will share the shock and dismay of what has happened. so the bishop of
5:41 pm
nottingham expressing his shock at the truly horrendous tragic incident and we heard similar sentiments from the prime minister right at the start of the day when we had heard the early details ofjust the number of incidents and the casualties in fatalities. the fact vigil as you can see currently going on at st. peter's church and the city centre i'm going to bring you back in it we will stay with both the vigils and the microphones because we were told that this news conference would be under way around the house we wait because it is important to get the update from the police in terms of the latest information but important as well just to reassure all of those people in the city because it has been such an alarming day. fortunately, these types of incidents are rare. the uk and some of the best homicide detectives in the world. so the public should be
5:42 pm
reassured that nottingham and will do everything that they can to support the community. we have seen reports from the university that they have offered support to students. it seems very much like this is an isolated incident although we are suing for more information and keeping an open mind. it certainly seems that this will affect a community for a long time, strips will be closed, businesses will honestly not be able to open and it will have a knock on effect. like i said there will be a lot of please support from the area. a the reassurance done by the local officers and to reassure the community and the police will be doing everything that they can to gather as much evidence as they can as quickly as possible. they will want to gather as much evidence of that they can use it in interviews obviously or two but to courts the crown prosecution service looking to charge the individual or any other persons involved. but this will take time. forensic evidence takes time. evenit
5:43 pm
time. forensic evidence takes time. even it fingerprints off of their shares swabbing for dna and things like that they like to submit that to a laboratory in these things will take time. but if the forensic services and the uk are excellent and they can turn around transit results quite quickly. but cctv for me will be key in this case. the suspect cosmic movements before the movement and during the incident and where he was in the whole day leading up to it and if not long before will be crucial. there will before will be crucial. there will be looking at mobile phone data, looking at records to try and work out who has he been in contact with where he has been and through his call data notices and also again the deceased they will be looking at their movements of the day to see if there's any connection there. if there's any connection there. if there were any meetings in and to beget further information from the police is a huge amount of work to do. i'm at the offices will be working 20 47 to gather much evidence and there will be teams of officers interviewing witnesses, i winces to all of the incidents so
5:44 pm
there will be huge over the next coming days that i have confidence in my former colleagues that they will do a fantasticjob and will continue to do so. this will do a fantastic “ob and will continue to do so.- will do a fantastic “ob and will continue to do so. as you started that answer— continue to do so. as you started that answer pictures _ continue to do so. as you started that answer pictures on - continue to do so. as you started that answer pictures on the - continue to do so. as you started | that answer pictures on the police station and just the media teams telling all of those journalists who were there that that news conference will start in about five minutes from now. they also said it will be a long statement. i don't think they will be a question and answer session so we are going to get an update in terms of basic information but i suspect that there won't be very many questions actually taken there. that was what the liaison officers were saying to the press who were assembled there. let me pick up on the couple of things you were saying there. in terms of the immediate work for those forensic teams one of the things is important is just to establish the basic timeline, is it not? isjust to establish the basic timeline, is it not?- isjust to establish the basic timeline, is it not? that will be ke .
5:45 pm
timeline, is it not? that will be key- and _ timeline, is it not? that will be key- and that _ timeline, is it not? that will be key. and that will _ timeline, is it not? that will be key. and that will come - timeline, is it not? that will be key. and that will come from i timeline, is it not? that will be - key. and that will come from looking at things like cctv and forensic evidence and eyewitness accounts. the forensic examination and strategy in this case will be vast. they will have teams of senior crime scene managers who will co—ordinate with the forensic resources required to track and piece together, piece by piece. when you add that together and have things like mobile phone data, eyewitness accounts, speaking to friends and family of the decease and friends and family connected to the person arrested, it is only when you get all the information you can start piece together the timeline. and actually establish what happened, why and how. i will interru -t happened, why and how. i will interrunt you _ happened, why and how. i will interrupt you because - happened, why and how. i will interrupt you because that - happened, why and how. i will interrupt you because that news conference is just about to start. today there has been a shocking end tragic series of events which has led to the lives of three innocent people being taken. and left another member of the public in a critical condition in hospital. my thoughts are with all of the films affected ljy
5:46 pm
are with all of the films affected by this horrific incident. and we are working extremely hard to try and understand exactly what has happened. i can tell you that a 31—year—old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attacks and i can reassure the public that it is safe to visit the city centre. there may be some road restrictions in place as we continue to establish exactly what has happened. police were called to ilkeston road just after 4am after a member of the public reported that two people aged 19 had been stabbed and were unresponsive. we had a further call to another incident in milton street where the driver of a stolen van had attempted to run over three people. as a result one man is in hospital in a critical condition while two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries. the
5:47 pm
van was then stopped on maple street where a man was tasered and detained by police officers on suspicion of murder. a man in his 50s was also found dead from knife injuries in magdala street by a member of the public. at the moment we believe that the suspect i stolen this man's vehicle and driven it to milton street where he has been driven at members of the public. we are still in the early stages of the investigation and need to determine exactly what the motives were behind this attack. we are keeping an open mind and are working closely with counterterrorism policing to establish the facts. as we would normally do in this type of circumstances. the families of all of the victims have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. officers have also carried out a number of searches at
5:48 pm
addresses across the city to gather evidence. but no further arrests have been made. a team of dedicated detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and will continue to gather evidence over the coming days. i want to thank those who live in work in our city for their patience and understanding in incredibly difficult circumstances. we will of course keep the public updated as soon we are able to say anything further. this is a very sad day for our city. and we will do everything possible to getjustice for the victims and their families. thank you. this victims and their families. thank ou. * , ., victims and their families. thank ou. ~ , ., ., victims and their families. thank ou. a ., ., , ., you. as we were told a statement the 're you. as we were told a statement they're updating _ you. as we were told a statement they're updating the _ you. as we were told a statement they're updating the press - you. as we were told a statement they're updating the press in - you. as we were told a statement. they're updating the press in terms of latest detail. but taking no questions, visibly upset officer there going through the details many

of which we knew that talking about it being a shocking day for the city of nottingham. three people dead, one person in hospital with critical injuries. confirming that a 31—year—old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. and then made it very clear that it was safe to go to the city centre, they are not looking, the police say, for anyone else and they went through the details of the various incidents. two people initially stopped at one location than an attempt to run over three people and two people injured. one in hospital in a critical condition. and then in a separate incident at magdala street, another person had been stabbed and the officer going through say we are keeping an open minds, we are working with counterterrorism police and then set a number of other

addresses had been visited but there had been no further arrests made. then ending the statement saying, it has been a really sad day and they are going to do everything they can to ensure there is justice for those families of the victims. let me go back to perry benton who was listening to that former police detective inspector who specialises in homicides. in a sense, it was a restatement of many of the details that we already knew. yes. restatement of many of the details that we already knew.— that we already knew. yes. it is really horrendous. _ that we already knew. yes. it is really horrendous. listening - that we already knew. yes. it is really horrendous. listening to | that we already knew. yes. it is i really horrendous. listening to the details. it is not unexpected the number of addresses had been searched. they searched in connection also with the person arrested and obviously the unfortunate victims of the horrific incident. the incident august the where they took about the van being stolen, new information not
5:51 pm
previously released as ops information the police were aware of quite readily which is why i assumed they also were able to link the incidents. but as the officer said it will be safe to go back to nottingham. they need to come together not to support each other. under the officers will be doing everything they can to getjustice for the families. they have specially trained officers who are supporting the families. that is one of the toughest roles of any homicide investigation. the family was liaison officer supporting families being the link between the families being the link between the families and the investigation. the families and the investigation. the families will have so many wanting him to the details that the officers will not be able to give them immediately while the investigation is so fresh. but they are trained to support the families in any way they can. and the investigation will take a number of days before as much evidence can be gathered as possible and to obviously pc up exactly a timeline and was look at the motive behind it. is that is a key thing,
5:52 pm
that the police were looking to do to try and identify the motive and the connection between either the victims themselves and also the suspect arrested in the victims. that will be crucial to identify if there are any links or if this was a complete stranger attack but as a say, they are rare in this country, but the officers will do everything that they can for justice for the families. i that they can for 'ustice for the families. . ., that they can for 'ustice for the families. _, . ~ ., that they can for 'ustice for the families. _, ,., . ~ ., i. families. i will come back to you in a moment — families. i will come back to you in a moment but _ families. i will come back to you in a moment but i _ families. i will come back to you in a moment but i want _ families. i will come back to you in a moment but i want to _ families. i will come back to you in a moment but i want to bring - families. i will come back to you in a moment but i want to bring back| a moment but i want to bring back danny shaw, crimejustice a moment but i want to bring back danny shaw, crime justice and police and commentator of course a former bbc home affairs correspondent. danny, interestingjust bbc home affairs correspondent. danny, interesting just now in that news conference they were still clearly have an open mind as to motive and are still working with anti—terror police. so we heard that in the earlier part of the day, but that continued combination exists even now. . that continued combination exists even now. , . ., even now. yes. the police are keein: even now. yes. the police are keeping an — even now. yes. the police are

5:57 pm
because, for the first time ever on 13june, the temperature in the uk topped 30 celsius. we reached that milestone in west wales, but also into sussex. fewer storms around, but they have been going across parts of the highlands, some thunderstorms and some very heavy rain. also had a few storms across the western side of northern ireland. but higher pressure building across from scandinavia, tending to ease those storms away and introduce some slightly fresher air, so it should be a bit more comfortable for sleeping. overnight tonight, after those storms move away, it'll be dry, clear. a little bit, misty in the southwest and maybe up towards some northeastern parts of scotland. but otherwise, clear skies, slightly fresher air, losing that humidity. so temperatures will be a bit lower, and maybe getting down as low as nine celsius in the north east of england. and over the next few days, we keep this warm, dry and sunny picture going, but it will be cooler at night. and so, as we head into wednesday, sunny skies for much of the uk. the winds are quite light, coming in on an easterly breeze across east anglia and the southeast, 1—2 bits
5:58 pm
of fair weather cloud developing in the south, and a small chance of a shower up towards the highlands where temperatures will be 24—25 celsius. could make 30 celsius perhaps in the southeast of england, around the london area. but on thursday, it's a similar sort of story again — dry, sunny conditions, the winds very light, starting to warm up in the eastern side of the uk, chance of a storm later in the hills of wales, and perhaps for northern ireland. but those temperatures are beginning to lift across eastern areas, and we're looking at generally highs of 26—27 celsius. things may start to change by the end of the week, higher pressure retreating away, higher pressure retreating away, this area of low pressure trying this area of low pressure trying to push in from the atlantic — to push in from the atlantic — that's likely to bring more cloud that's likely to bring more cloud through the day on friday through the day on friday for western parts of the uk, for western parts of the uk, maybe some heavy showers, maybe some heavy showers, northern ireland, far west northern ireland, far west of england and wales, and perhaps of england and wales, and perhaps into the southwest of scotland. into the southwest of scotland. further east, still dry, further east, still dry, should be dry for the start should be dry for the start
5:59 pm
of the test match at edgbaston, of the test match at edgbaston, in the ashes, and temperatures in the ashes, and temperatures across the eastern side of the uk across the eastern side of the uk will be reaching 26—27 will be reaching 26—27 celsius again. into the weekend, things do start to change — we're looking at showers developing in more of the uk, and that showery theme continues into next week. at six, a major incident is declared here in nottingham. three people have been killed — two of them university students — and three people were hit by a van. a man has been arrested. armed police on the street after three attacks in three different parts of the city in the early hours of this morning. one person is in a critical condition after a van tried to run over three people. an eye witness described what she saw. he went straight in to these two people. the woman went on the curb.
6:00 pm
the man went up in the air.
