submersible missing tended and tenex submersible includes parts of the underwater craft —— missing titanic submersible. here in the uk that the bank of england becomes the latest to raise interest rates, the highest of 15 years to 5%. endocrine*s president and zelensky are saying russian forces are considering launching a terror attack on the zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. you are watching bbc news. the us coastguard says debris has been found in the search for the submersible which went missing in the north atlantic on sunday. five people were on board. the debris was found by a remotely operated vehicle deployed in the search. the bbc has been told that the debris included parts of the missing sub. let's cross street to boston now and speak with our correspondent carl who has the very latest. of course
7:31 pm
this news came to us in the very last hour or so we are waiting for that press conference to begin in about 30 minutes or so. give us a sense of the mood where you are not that this latest information has come through.— that this latest information has come through. this is going to be hiuhl come through. this is going to be highly anticipated _ come through. this is going to be highly anticipated press _ come through. this is going to be i highly anticipated press conference, we are used to getting them about once a day around one o'clock in the afternoon and coming at three p:m., the world media is here and that will be a highly attended press conference. everyone wanting to know more details about the debris field that was found. this was confirmed in a tweet earlier today by the us coast guard which has been coordinating its operations from right here in boston. this has been an international search and rescue effort. you have gotten very few details. we have had to be patient and we of course know that the clock was ticking we knew that there were an estimated 96 hours of air on the vessel so the world's media
7:32 pm
patiently waiting for updates and of course family and loved ones of those on board as well wanting to know of there was any sign of them or the vessel itself. now we do believe that parts of that vessel have been litigated in that debris field. information coming from a group called the explorers club. they are friends of those on board and they are experts in their field. what they are telling us is that part of the landing frame and a rear cover of that vessel have been recovered into if you can picture that vessel, titan, the landing frame is at the bottom of that craft and the rear portion has been recovered as well. that will be part of the scenarios that we have been walking through over the past couple of days. that would not be a good scenario that is when we feared could happen and experts have been discussing that if there were some sort of damage to the vessel it would essentially implode and that this would be almost instantaneous. given the amount of pressure underneath the ocean. again, we are waiting for confirmation, more details on what exactly has been found. this was in the area of the
7:33 pm
shipwreck of the titanic itself. so very close to where the last known location of titan and we will be getting updates shortly and we will be sure to bring you those life. figs be sure to bring you those life. as ou be sure to bring you those life. as you say, carl, quite a distressing bit of information coming through because there was hope against hope over the last few days. there was a pressure of time when we talked about oxygen levels because there was this anticipation, hope that perhaps they could be found. there was. we perhaps they could be found. there was- we all — perhaps they could be found. there was. we all knew _ perhaps they could be found. there was. we all knew that _ perhaps they could be found. there was. we all knew that among - perhaps they could be found. tue- was. we all knew that among those was. we all knew that among those five passengers on board were some very experienced adventurers and explorers. hamish harding has been to the bottom of the ocean before, had been all the way to the deepest accessible part of the ocean. hit also been up into space. also a french explorer on board who was known as mr titanic. he had been the
7:34 pm
person who had seen the actual wreckage of the titanic up close and personal more than anyone else. so among those on board according to friends and relatives they said, look, this is an experienced group of people, they would know it's too in case of an emergency. they would know that there was a limited supply of oxygen on board and it would do everything that they could to preserve that. they would go into very calm state, they would breathe a little bit more shallowly, they would rest, they would try to stay warm as they could and await rescue and that is also why we had this burst of optimism and hope yesterday and on tuesday when we heard news that there were some noises detected, or sounds. that also would be similar to protocol that someone experienced in the ocean might know in terms of how to alert people to your location. banging on the side of the vessel at regular intervals. unfortunately, we do not know exactly what is happening, but this

could be the worst case scenario. we did know and we were always hoping that the five people on board would be able to stay alive as long as they possibly could until some kind of rescue. . ~ they possibly could until some kind of rescue. ., ~ , ., they possibly could until some kind of rescue. . ~' , ., ., they possibly could until some kind of rescue. ., ~ i. ., , of rescue. thank you for bringing this u- to of rescue. thank you for bringing this up to date _ of rescue. thank you for bringing this up to date there _ of rescue. thank you for bringing this up to date there from - of rescue. thank you for bringing | this up to date there from boston. let's joining me now is danjohnson. who was also in boston at the press conference that is due to begin in around 25 minutes i can see the press packed behind you. yes they are probably _ press packed behind you. yes they are probably 100 _ press packed behind you. yes they are probably 100 or _ press packed behind you. yes they are probably 100 or more - press packed behind you. yes they i are probably 100 or more journalists here from _ are probably 100 or more journalists here from organisations all around the world — here from organisations all around the world. things are just being set ”p the world. things are just being set up here, _ the world. things are just being set up here, microphones being readied, cameras _ up here, microphones being readied, cameras being trained and focused and prepared for the update from the coastguard _ and prepared for the update from the coastguard real admiral who has been coordinating this rescue effort since — coordinating this rescue effort since its — coordinating this rescue effort since its release day. he is the man who knows — since its release day. he is the man who knows the key bit of detail that we are _ who knows the key bit of detail that we are all— who knows the key bit of detail that we are all waiting for. what is the significance of that debris that they had — significance of that debris that they had discovered on this event and how— they had discovered on this event and how can it be leading to the tightened and will come to tell us

7:38 pm
you are that you are ok. and he always response to me immediately and he did not. and that was my first indication that there was obviously some problem. and then when the debris field was found today i thought, well, there is still hope because debris was found yesterday and that debris turned out to be not to be from the titanic. within the last minutes we have heard that some of that debris may match the titan. so my hope is starting to dissipate but i guess it is the lawyer in me that has to wait until all of the evidence is in. before i can possibly make a conclusion and face the fact that the ship is gone. figs conclusion and face the fact that the ship is gone.— conclusion and face the fact that the ship is gone. as you say while this information _ the ship is gone. as you say while this information has _ the ship is gone. as you say while this information has come - the ship is gone. as you say while this information has come in - the ship is gone. as you say while this information has come in and l the ship is gone. as you say while i this information has come in and the bbc was told that the debris found in the search area of the missing titan submersible included parts of the underwater craft, we are waiting for the officials to give more information and that press conference will take place in about
7:39 pm
20 minutes' time. what is extraordinary for me to speaking to different people is the number of people who know ph and the way that they talk about him. his expertise and passion for the ocean and his work. and his curiosity about getting into the submersible and really being a part of this exploration. i really being a part of this exploration.— really being a part of this exloration. ~' ,. , exploration. i think he described him perfectly- — exploration. i think he described him perfectly. he _ exploration. i think he described him perfectly. he is— exploration. i think he described him perfectly. he is part - exploration. i think he described him perfectly. he is part of - exploration. i think he described him perfectly. he is part of the i him perfectly. he is part of the family. part of the titanic family and i have known him for about 25 years. and there is no one who knows that wreck site better than him. he has been on more dives than anyone else, he knows it like the back of his hand. and he is passionate about the titanic. while he was not a pilot on this particular vessel, he was i guess for a lack of a better term the tour guide. and one cannot have a better tour guide for that particular area then ph. so if he is gone, i know that he died doing what
7:40 pm
he loved to do and i certainly will miss them very much. has he loved to do and i certainly will miss them very much.— he loved to do and i certainly will miss them very much. as you say we are still waiting _ miss them very much. as you say we are still waiting for _ miss them very much. as you say we are still waiting for any _ miss them very much. as you say we are still waiting for any kind - miss them very much. as you say we are still waiting for any kind of- are still waiting for any kind of confirmation. we do not know at this stage. but someone also said, if this is an implosion it would have happened in nanoseconds. they would not have realised it had even happened. he not have realised it had even happened-— not have realised it had even hauened. . ., , , happened. he had actually set the himself earlier _ happened. he had actually set the himself earlier on _ happened. he had actually set the himself earlier on to _ happened. he had actually set the himself earlier on to me _ happened. he had actually set the himself earlier on to me and - happened. he had actually set the himself earlier on to me and to i himself earlier on to me and to others. does not really have to be afraid of something like this happening. because you would not know it if it did. but if there were an implosion which would be suggested if they found debris that implosion would have probably happened while the ship was on its dissent. in the first hour and 45 minutes, which would rule out the fact that it were humans making the sounds yesterday. i was very hopeful that it was ph knowing that this was something that mariners would have always done to get attention of others, is bang on the ship, maybe

send some more scold —— morse code word and he certainly would have known that as a retired french commander of the needy but it appears now if it all ends of the way i think it will is that those sounds were for something other than titan. a, sounds were for something other than titan. * ., ., ., sounds were for something other than titan. ., ., ., titan. a lot of conversation as well in the last few _ titan. a lot of conversation as well in the last few days _ titan. a lot of conversation as well in the last few days about - titan. a lot of conversation as well in the last few days about the - in the last few days about the safety guidelines around the submersible.— safety guidelines around the submersible. . ., submersible. there were certain com an submersible. there were certain company guidelines, _ submersible. there were certain company guidelines, but - submersible. there were certain company guidelines, but there l submersible. there were certain - company guidelines, but there were no regulations. when we think of an aircraft we would not think of going onto a commercial aircraft with only one pilot for example. like titan had. we would not thinking onto a commercial aircraft without any regulations. however, in this particular case while there are many aeroplanes and the air is full of them there is only one titan so a lot of individuals, scientists and
7:42 pm
engineers concentrated on only one particular vessel. there was probably viewed as something that did not require government regulations because there was only one of them. i can only imagine now, if this programme of tories and continues to happen that we will start seeing regulation —— tourism we will see more stringent safeguards. but we need to know what caused it. we would not want to take any vessel again, at least i would not, at least we do —— know exactly what caused the mishap with the first one to ensure that it will not happen again. first one to ensure that it will not happen again-— happen again. this very grim eisode, happen again. this very grim episode. just _ happen again. this very grim episode, just reminds - happen again. this very grim i episode, just reminds everyone happen again. this very grim - episode, just reminds everyone of the vastness of the ocean and how unknown it remains. just the vastness of the ocean and how unknown it remains.— the vastness of the ocean and how unknown it remains. just to give you an idea. the — unknown it remains. just to give you an idea, the titanic— unknown it remains. just to give you an idea, the titanic itself— unknown it remains. just to give you an idea, the titanic itself was - an idea, the titanic itself was about 900 feet long. and it took 73 years to look at that vessel in 1985. this vessel is or was 22 feet
7:43 pm
long. seek and see how much smaller it was then the titanic. while it did not take 73 years to locate it, or he would not think that amount of time it is still a very small vessel in a very large ocean. even with the advanced technology that we have today that we did not have in titanic*s time in 1912 or even when it was discovered in 1985, we still find it difficult to find a needle in a haystack. so i give all of the efforts of the canadian coastguard and the american coastguard and navy and the american coastguard and navy and the american coastguard and navy and the french government a lot of kudos to be able to do what they do. i think that we were all hooked up to the story. every day when people look up they had to find out what the new status was on titan and i think one reason for that is not only because of the human life that was on board, but it was because of its connection to a very well—known

7:47 pm
0ceangate says that, we now believe that those on board have sadly been lost. these men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world's oceans. that is 0ceangate saying that the entire 0ceangate family is deeply grateful for the countless men and women from multiple organisations of the international community who expedia needed wide ranging resources and have worked so very hard on this mission. 0ur very hard on this mission. our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time we grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone that they knew. a statement that has just come into us from 0ceangate, confirming the fears that everyone has had. and confirming what we have been discussing over the past hour or so.
7:48 pm
0ceangate has said that we now believe those five on board have sadly been lost and they say it is a very sad time for the entire exploring community and for each of the family members of those lost at sea, we respectfully ask that the privacy of these families be respected during this most painful time. that is a statement that has just come in from 0ceangate. confirming these very sad news about those on board, but submersible. let's speak now to our science correspondentjonathan moz who joins me from the newsroom. with me is our science correspondent, jonathan amos. the outcome that so many fears and had discussed has not been confirmed by 0ceangate. had discussed has not been confirmed by 0ceangate-— by 0ceangate. there is little doubt now that this _ by 0ceangate. there is little doubt now that this vessel _ by 0ceangate. there is little doubt now that this vessel was _ by 0ceangate. there is little doubt now that this vessel was lost - by 0ceangate. there is little doubt now that this vessel was lost and l now that this vessel was lost and that all five individuals on board
7:49 pm
perished, i'm afraid to say that is absolutely clear. the first indications came when we got that tweet from the us coast guard just over two or three hours go. saying that debris had been found on the sea floor of the atlantic, we wondered what the debris was in we were going to be 50 press conference but that it emerged that we got some information about what they had in their possession or what had photographed on the sea floor. we understand that it is this landing frame here at the bottom of the sub, and this is the structure that it uses either to sit on the deck of a ship or the sea floor or land or whatever. and in this aft section that has also been identified and that has also been identified and thatis that has also been identified and that is indicative i am afraid of some major structural failure that is indicative i am afraid of some major structuralfailure has occurred with this vessel. i think it is fair to assume now that when
7:50 pm
the communications were lost or around about that time on sunday, this is the tragedy that befell the sub at that time. it would have been a fairly energetic implosion, i'm afraid to say. the pressure at depth, i need to say this, the pressure at depth, at titanic depth is about 4000 tonnes per square metre. it is immense. if there is any structural weakness in this vessel than that pressure will exploit it. and in all likelihood it imploded very rapidly indeed. if there is a small mercy it is that there is a small mercy it is that the five people on board would have died instantly. that the five people on board would have died instantly.— died instantly. that is something that we have _ died instantly. that is something that we have continually - died instantly. that is something that we have continually heard i died instantly. that is something that we have continually heard in the last hour or so that this would have happened in nanoseconds and thatis have happened in nanoseconds and that is some solace that these people who need those on board have
7:51 pm
said. but they would not have felt this implosion. butjust this breaking news that has come to us the last few minutes that all five passengers on the missing titan submersible are believed to be dead. that is the company that operates the vessel, says, 0ceangate, they issued a statement that has come into the bbc in the last few minutes and all five passengers on that missing titan submersible are believed to have been, sadly, lost. according to this 0ceangate statement, they said that the entire 0ceangate family is deeply grateful for the countless men and women for multiple organisations of the international community who expedia needed wide ranging resources and have worked so hard on this mission. this is a very sad time for the entire explorer community. let's go straight to boston on speak to our correspondent danjohnson who is waiting for the us coast guard press conference. this noose statement has just come in from 0ceangate which is
7:52 pm
of course the company that operates the vessel. we are waiting for the press conference to begin. 0ceangate has confirmed this news, but of course we will get more details from the us coast guard in the next few minutes. , , ,, minutes. yes it is the us coast guard that has been coordinating the search and rescue operation and operation that they say that only this morning was still active. but hopes have been fading especially as we thought that the five on board had survived what and initially went wrong that their oxygen would have went out possibly this morning. and i think everyone was moving to a position of being resigned to them not being saved, not having survived this incident, but now looks like what we are about to hear from the us coast guard is coordinated with the statement that has just been released by 0ceangate which confirms their understanding that those five men have been lost. that is after the search and rescue teams in the area this morning found some debris
7:53 pm
on the ocean floor. understood to be part of the submersible and that leads them to the conclusion that something probably catastrophic, instant and unsurmountable happen perhaps a very early into this dive on sunday money that was not possible to survive and that those five lives have now been lost. that is what the statement from 0ceangate pays tribute to those five men. they were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the worlds oceans. 0ceangate says their hearts are with those five souls and every member of their family at this time. we grieve their family at this time. we grieve the loss of life and the joy that they brought to everyone who knew them. they say it is a very sad time for everyone who was involved in the deep—sea exploring community. no doubt that is true. those of search and recovery operations have been ongoing close to the site to today. we know that there are still a number of ships and unmanned
7:54 pm
submersibles involved, robotic underwater submarines which have been involved in the operation this morning. as far as we understand that that recovery effort is still ongoing perhaps to find even more evidence. we were reading to see exactly what was that the us coast guard had found but now it seems inevitable that whatever it is that they have discovered and analysed, they have discovered and analysed, they have discovered and analysed, they have a linked to titan and that is why they presumably, along with 0ceangate have now come to the conclusion that in terms of rescue operation, the operation is over. that those five lives have no most likely been lost and lost potentially instantly very suddenly buy something quite quick and catastrophic. and possibly early on sunday morning —— morning and that is why now all hopes of finding any survivors have been lost and that all that cannot be done is perhaps a recovery effort and perhaps retrieving any further debris and perhaps being able to analyse a company what it was that went wrong to provide some answers as to how this could've happened. we wait to hear from the us coast guard rear who has been coordinating the search
7:55 pm
and rescue operation since early days, due to speak to the media here in the next five minutes or so. figs in the next five minutes or so. as ou in the next five minutes or so. as you say we are waiting to hear from the us coast guard. and that 0ceangate statement which no doubt all the correspondence that are looking at and reading also said this is an extremely sad time for our dedicated employees who are exhausted and grieving deeply over this loss. the entire 0ceangate family is deeply grateful for the multiple organisations and countless men and women who have helped with resources and worked so hard on this mission. dan, if one thing has come out of this very sad incident is just how close this exploring community is.— just how close this exploring communi is. , , ., just how close this exploring communi is. , ., community is. yes, exactly what has been an international _ community is. yes, exactly what has been an international expert -- - been an international expert —— effort that has drawn experts and specialist equipment from right around the world but it is quite a small community of real specialised expertise. people who really know
7:56 pm
each other and you have worked together for years perhaps tickets. some have made repeat visits to be titanic wreckage and perhaps other areas of deep—sea exploration of some of these are people who may have serious expertise and really know their stuff and no doubt they will feel that this loss quite intensely. there have been some mornings, we know that some of that community were not comfortable exactly on what 0ceangate has been doing and how it was operating. something that had been described as experimental. something that really was pushing at the boundaries. and there have been some concerns but i think now the focus will be on the loss in the grievance of the family and now we are reading for that press conference to to begin. let’s press conference to to begin. let's go straight — press conference to to begin. let's go straight to my _ colleague sumi who is in boston. this statement has come out and of course the news that everyone was hoping would not be the case sadly, those crewmembers have died and have
