8:18 pm
that press conference from the company that made the submersible titan saying that it appears that it had suffered a catastrophic loss, titan saying that it appears that it had suffered a catastrophic toss, a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber and suffered in implosion. what we heard john mauger say there is the debris that was found is consistent with this catastrophic loss and the pressure chamber and also we heard the rov that was assisting the search this morning, this was from verizon arctic and found the tail cone of the titan submersible 1600 feet from the bow of the titanic. this is on the ocean floor. he also did add that the first thing they did was notify the families immediately to make sure that they had understood what happened. our correspondent dan johnson was at this press conference, just a few feet away from where we're standing for the listening into the press conference they are, they provided a few more details about the debris that was
8:19 pm
awful to tell us more about that. the rare admiral and some of his officials were able to give us more detail of exactly what it was that they have seen on the sea bed this morning. he describes five key pieces of debris for them in the main i think it is the two end caps of the submersible that they've been able to at least get site of on the sea bed, which had given them the confidence to say that is the remains of the submersible and the way in which that debris has fallen to the sea bed gives them a strong suggestion that they keep repeating it is consistent with what they call a catastrophic implosion. that means something sudden, shocking, quite powerful which presumably would have meant certain death for those on board. it appears that this probably happened quite early into that dived down to the wreck of the titanic on sunday morning. we know that communication was lost about an hour and 45 minutes after the submersible
8:20 pm
set off. we now know from the coastguard that the records was found about 500 metres ahead of the bow of the titanic rack itself. this has all the indications that the submersible was on its way down to take those five men to the wreckage of the titanic when something went very badly wrong. perhaps a leak, perhaps a catastrophic overpowering of the water pressure and that meant the submersible was essentially destroyed, those five lives were lost very quickly and there was no hope of rescue or recovery despite the efforts that have been undertaken over the last few days. it is no doubt a sad moment for all here, everyone involved in the deep—sea exploration community. they had come together to try to work for a successful outcome to this desperately sad and perplexing mystery that had troubled everyone for the last few days. now it appears clear that actually, despite their efforts there was no chance of
8:21 pm
rescue. who knows if it's any comfort to those who are grieving, we cannot put ourselves in the families position but at least they have an answer that debris has been found for that there is some understanding of what it may have been that went wrong foot of the admiral said the work will continue to put up the ships on the surface above the titanic rack and the remote underwater vehicles that were doing that work when the debris was spotted, they were carreon barrett did not building a picture and trying to find more of that debris and putting together a better idea of what happened here and how the five lives were lost. the admiral stated just how unforgiving the conditions are there, so deep down under the atlantic ocean where the weather wasn't great in the early stages of this rescue operation. we're talking about 3800 metres at the bottom of the atlantic. although that work well it sounds like go on it's not clear if they will be able to find any more records or any more
8:22 pm
detail to exactly what went wrong here, what happened. that is an effort that will continue. for now everybody here absorbing the news that this is no longer a rescue mission, it will now move into a recovery phase. the hope of finding any survivors is lost. thoughts turning to the families government freight click next those five men who went down to see the wreckage of the titanic on sunday morning and will not be going home to their families. ., ., ., ., families. dan, a sad moment for that we did hear— families. dan, a sad moment for that we did hear the _ families. dan, a sad moment for that we did hear the rear— families. dan, a sad moment for that we did hear the rear admiral - families. dan, a sad moment for that we did hear the rear admiral extend | we did hear the rear admiral extend his deepest condolences to the families and also said he hoped that this provided some solace in this difficult time to those families. he did also thank the numerous international partners who had come together to help in the effort. there were questions and asked about the timing of this. whether the sonar buoys were in the water might have picked up the implosion. what are the rearadmiral have picked up the implosion. what are the rear admiral say about that?

it sounds like its early stages of that sort of investigation work. examining exactly what the timeline was here and piece together a clear picture of what happened, what went wrong at what stage it may be impossible to actually provide a precise timeline of that because of the nature of this implosion and the nature of the conditions that they are working in. he said the effort will continue, there will be activity in that area for the foreseeable days to try to recover any more debris, try to see what evidence there is to try to build that picture. it may actually be that picture. it may actually be that now there is no hope of saving any lives that naturally, this rescue effort will move into a different phase fault. the man power, the equipment will reduce over the coming days and it may not in fact be possible to give a full picture of exactly what happen here and what went wrong. certainly that is work that will continue and we know some of the companies involved,

initially, that hamish harding was in the sub and first dive titanic. that was not good. all of us in deep—sea, subsea community understand the risks put up and when you get news like that, it hits you in the pit of your stomach. and particularly when it's a friend. and later in the day that ph nargeolet was on board with hay maze. it's a double blow. hamish harding ——. i do not know stockton rush, he's part of my community. and then to hear a son and father were doing this on father's day was gut wrenching, isn't it? what we're learning today in terms of what they are seeing on the sea bed confirmed what a lot of us feared right from the beginning.

dangerous location where if something goes wrong the chances of somebody coming to your rescue are very, very, very small. what we saw over the past four days in terms of the coastguard response, the navy response, the offshore community, the research vessels was extraordinary. i never thought it would happen that so many assets could get quickly but it's all in vain. we're going to learn something from that response as well. but obviously, an investigation has to happen. and just to highlight how unprecedented this is, generally at there's an accident, if there's an accident you immediately know if a plane crashes it is the accident plane crashes it is the accident
