colin paterson is there today. this is the day when music finally starts at glastonbury on the main stages, and good news forfans of arctic monkeys. the english band are headlining the pyramid stage tonight. they had to cancel their dublin show on tuesday as alex turner, the lead singer, had laryngitis. but last night, we saw a giant mirror ball with "arctic monkeys" written on it being delivered, so almost certain they will be performing tonight. a couple of bands, we don't know who they are. the churnups are listed at 6.15pm. there's a big strong rumour that is actually going to be foo fighters playing the main stage. and over at woodsies, another venue, there is a belief that rick astley, the english singer, could be teaming up with blossoms to play the greatest hits of the smiths, which is quite a thought! one band we know are definitely playing, we can show them now, these are the master musicians of joujouka. and i can speak to the man, frank rynne, who is their manager. how are you? very well.
11:52 am
and we are very excited to have them on because they are opening the pyramid stage today. they are opening the pyramid stage today. it's their third time at glastonbury. they came in 1980 and played at the farm, an old festival. they were here in 2011 opening the pyramid, playing all around the site. this is our third time back with the musicians. they are from north africa, from ahl srif in morocco. the south of the rif. they play sufi trance music. they have a dancer, bou jeloud, who is like the pan of the roman times. they have been described by billy corgan of the smashing pumpkins as the loudest acoustic band in the world. he said, "nothing, no heavy metal band mic—ed up, sounds as loud as them." so blame me, we'll hear what they sound like! we can hear that in a minute, but brianjones from the rolling stones was the man that brought them to the attention of many people. well, yeah. the beat generation, william burroughs, brion gysin in the *505.
11:53 am
in the 1960s, brianjones came down to the village and he was so enamoured with the music that he came back in 1968 and recorded what's called the first world music album. this came out posthumously in 1971. it was called brian jones presents the pipes of pan atjoujouka and it's really one of these totemic things. it's brought people to the village ever since. we do a festival every year in the village for 50 people and the musicians play occasionally outside the village — and we're delighted to be here at this festival today. they are opening up the pyramid stage at midday. the festival will end with sir eltonjohn on the same stage. and the last time it was u2 on this stage. but, yeah, over to the music. yeah, let's hear a little bit on the channel. let's take it away. music.

at least is not the manifested normally is! at least is not the manifested normally is! now it's time for a look at the weather with matt. hello. we've got some weather changes around at the moment and then we've got a bit of wet weather. but this weekend we have still got some heat and humidity to contend with, notjust by day but by night as well. and it will all culminate on sunday with some particularly potent and thundery downpours. out there today, though, thunder is not really the risk but a rain or drizzle coming and going across parts of scotland, north—west england, north—west wales and indeed northern ireland for the rest of the day. the odd heavier burst. but while it will be particularly grey around these western areas, south and east and the channel islands the sun shines out, a hot day here. 27-28. and in shetland it will be another sunny day. how is here of around 16. but humidity levels are rising. they will rise further through tonight. southerly wind, plenty of cloud around, further rain at times in scotland, northern ireland — and quite misty and murky with some drizzle in the air across some western coasts and hills. but note the temperatures into tomorrow morning. not dropping lower than
11:56 am
around 15 or 16 degrees. many will spend much of the night with temperatures in the high teens or low 20s. so a pretty warm start to saturday. a fair bit of cloud around, especially in the west. light rain or drizzle. scotland, the odd heavier shower to contend with, pushing their way north eastwards. during saturday afternoon, the cloud brings up a bit more readily with more sunshine around. you really will feel the heat. with that humidity, it is going to be quite a stifling afternoon. temperatures — 26 around the moray firth, 29 or 30 towards the south—east of england. another very warm night will follow. still drawing air in from the south around this area of high pressure. pressure conditions trying to work in off the atlantic and a dividing line is this by the front which will bring some heavy thundery downpours late in the night and into the start of sunday across ireland. and through sunday, that will spread into many western parts of the uk. it could get close to glastonbury, and then later in the day very close to edgbaston, too. not too much rain across southern counties, and some eastern areas will stay dry throughout. here, the highest of the temperatures. the heat, humidity still in place. 30 degrees across the south—east compares to 18 or 19
11:57 am
in northern ireland. and that fresher air will push eastwards with those thundery downpours during sunday night. and then into next week, we have got high pressure to the south of us, the air coming off of the atlantic. so a slightly different week. it won't be a cold week but we will see some further rain at times, especially across the north and the west. the further south and east you are, always are set to be that little bit drier with some sunshine at times. and in the sunshine, we will see the temperatures lift up once again into the mid 20s. and that is how it is looking. goodbye for now.
