road restrictions remain in place around moscow — after emergency security measures were imposed during wagner's advance on the russian capital. the threat of a major uprising against the russian president vladimir putin appears to have receded, after a deal was struck which enabled the rebellious leader to retreat. yevgeny prigozhin, the head of the wagner mercenary group — pictured here leaving the russian city of rostov—on—don —is reportedly going into exile in belarus after abandoning his advance on moscow. and with wagner forces firing their guns into the sky — and cheers from the watching public — his troops also

military headquarters in the city had been seized by forces loyal to yevgeny prigozhin without firing a shot. once a close ally of putin, yevgeny prigozhin had fallen out with russia's military leadership claiming they had used his mercenaries as cannon fodder in ukraine and so he began to head towards moscow. as the wagner convoy began a long drive to the capital there were explosions and reports of helicopter shots down but a deal brokered by the president of neighbouring belarus, an ally of putin, halted yevgeny prigozhin*s advance later in the day before significant bloodshed. but the question is, what now? yevgeny prigozhin*s exact whereabouts are unknown but he is due to go into exile in belarus. his forces, said to be 25,000 strong, are supposed to be absorbed into the regular russian military, but it is not yet clear how are with what effect on the war on ukraine. moscow the events could

flow of information. the reception given to departing wagner forces last night in rostov—on—don shows some still regard them as heroes. the mutiny may be over but the shock waves that has left behind are only beginning. let's look back at what's actually happened over the past couple of days. early on friday, yevgeny prigozhin questioned the war in ukraine and the role of the russian defence minister sergei shoigu, claiming he did it to gain military honours. prigozhin called for an armed rebellion and accused the kremlin of hitting his troops with a missile strike on friday. in moscow, security was stepped up as wagner took rostov—on—don. on saturday, prigozhin declared 25,000 of his troops had crossed the border from ukraine in the early hours of the morning. the russian president vladimir putin denounced this action as a "criminal adventure" and warned of punishments in a tv address. over the course of the day, wagner forces made progress towards moscow, seizing military

continue his operations, well, much depends on what happens to a wire can now. there is that deadline for re—subordinating wagner to the russian military defence in one of the reasons that yevgeny prigozhin made his move was to avoid this happening. now, will this happen? will this go ahead? will yevgeny prigozhin lose control of wagoner? these are the things we have to watch out for in the coming days. for the short—term, the destabilisation of yevgeny prigozhin and have gone away but at the moment, history then goes. criticism in the air and there is undoubtedly now a weakness to vladimir putin that we have not seen before. there is absolutely — that we have not seen before. there is absolutely no _ that we have not seen before. there is absolutely no doubt _ that we have not seen before. there is absolutely no doubt that - that we have not seen before. it” is absolutely no doubt that putin emerges from this weekend in the long term and indeed, if you reflect historically on failed coups in russia and the soviet union, think of 1991 when hardliners staged a coup against gorbachev which failed
1:07 pm
after three days. the soviet union collapsed just a few months later. think of the failed 1917 march on saint petersburg who also tried to stage a coup of a kind and also failed. then a few months the bolsheviks came to power and we had a civil war which lasted for a long time and cost russia millions of lives. so there is a really bad historical precedent here as far as field crews go and i wonder if putin is worried about this.— is worried about this. briefly, do ou think is worried about this. briefly, do you think you — is worried about this. briefly, do you think you will— is worried about this. briefly, do you think you will continue - is worried about this. briefly, do i you think you will continue double down on the conflict in ukraine? the bi aer down on the conflict in ukraine? tie: bigger question down on the conflict in ukraine? tue: bigger question is whether he has to go full stalinist in russia in order to shore up his authority. he has tighten screws over the last month in years and key dissidents are in prison. he could go much further in this because obviously his authority has been compromised or he may not do anything and continue drifting down that uncertain pathway towards what seems to be a further

deterioration of his authority and potential meltdown in russia. i'm joined by alicia kearns, a conservative mp and chair of the british foreign affairs committee. i'm interested what you have taken from the last 48 hours with regards to moscow, the kremlin and vladimir putin. you just need. t to moscow, the kremlin and vladimir putin. you just need.— putin. you 'ust need. i apologise. a lona time putin. youjust need. i apologise. a longtime since _ putin. youjust need. i apologise. a long time since we _ putin. youjust need. i apologise. a long time since we had _ putin. youjust need. i apologise. a long time since we had that. - putin. youjust need. i apologise. a long time since we had that. my - putin. you just need. i apologise. a. long time since we had that. my view is that this is not over yet. as the public thread between yevgeny prigozhin and putin has hesitated i think we are now to one threshold. the conflict will not end between them. there is more to go. we have learned that russian domestic internal security provisions are not as effective as we thought there might be and i guess as putin thought they were and we've learned that the fractures within that is
1:09 pm
incredibly splintered but we have also learned that putin has now been dealt what is a mortal blow which is the fact that he had had a social contract with the people of russia for the whole of his time as president prime minister where he promised that in return for him being the strongman and providing security and stability to russia, people had to give up their individual freedoms people had to give up their individualfreedoms and people had to give up their individual freedoms and rights and essentially be willing to live in an autocracy. that has now been shattered and proven that putting cannot provide that level of support to the russian people. we cannot provide that stability. ilustith to the russian people. we cannot provide that stability. with regards to everything _ provide that stability. with regards to everything that _ provide that stability. with regards to everything that has _ provide that stability. with regards to everything that hasjust - provide that stability. with regards to everything that hasjust played i to everything that has just played out. how does that affect your work with regards to the foreign affairs committee? what will that influence, from your perspective? get the muddler, we should all be sighing a big sigh of relief because this is a nuclear power that we were fighting

over and that is what is taking up the majority of the time in western capitals over the last 36 hours or so but we're midway through an inquiry into the wagner group and the fact that they are committing crimes in the middle east and africa as well as ukraine, will need to review our conclusions and make sure we have given that best advice but there are too many things which are not clear. it is yevgeny prigozhin with are going to go to belarus? is this a deal about money? ijust don't buy it. the complex relationship between yevgeny prigozhin and putin is far more complicated than what has been prevented so we have to sit and wait. this is not over yet. but you expect to see continued support for ukraine and its endeavours and its counteroffensive? ever made without question. one of the most important we're not talking enough is how ukraine is capitalised on this chaos. they watch six different points over the last 36 hours and made gains along each and even rumours that they have managed to

nick beake, has been working with the team and is in the bbc verify hub with more. what exactly happened yesterday and just how much fighting was there between the advancing wagner forces and the regular russian army? well, over the past 24 hours or so, bbc verify has been looking at the video that has been coming out and trying to make sense of it. let me show one video. quite dramatic, this. a russian helicopter, we presume, opening fire towards a target. this is next to a major road and you can see an explosion there. it is thought that it is a wagner target. look, there is the explosion. we have not been able to verify that but the video itself we have authenticated because we know it was
1:16 pm
put up on social media yesterday. it was a new video. there were some other things as well. i will show you what exactly. this is an image from google street view and you can see the distinctive housing there, the yellow and the blue. that matches the video. also, these pylons that we can see in the aftermath of the explosion, they match as well. where was all of this happening? let me show you on the map. between rostov—on—don whether wagner forces set off and moscow where they said they were wanting to get to along the russian m4 motorway. at the same time there was other stuff happening. this was an aftermath of an explosion at a fuel depot. this was easy compared to other things because you've got their branding there of that particular building which gave us an obvious target for geo— locating this. if we go back to the map it is a city of about 1 this. if we go back to the map it is a city of about1 million people here. elsewhere, at the same time, other people are capturing what is happening. this is footage from car, dash cam footage, and that shows the great plume of smoke after that depot blast. going back to our up
1:17 pm
again, another element i want to show you which is north of the city and that is where military vehicles were filmed on the highway and this is one video here. you can see some of them coming through here because they have been questions raised aboutjust how big this convey was. it speaks to mid—size. we can see herejust in a moment, some tanks coming through. the video is on the pier so you will be able to see it again at the moment but certainly no satellite images emerge so far convoy coming through. look, you can see the tank here and people already on top. in terms of what we can say about yesterday, we know it was a bewildering 24 hours foot of events happening at breakneck speed. we have been able to verify some fragments, some small elements but really, in terms of the bigger picture, it remains extremely confused and what exactly happened yesterday, gareth, is very difficult to piece together in any meaningful way. to piece together in any meaningful way. i'm joined by hanna liubakova, a belarusianjournalist and non, resident fellow

prigozhin and putin in the situation to send yevgeny prigozhin to belarus. we don't know the exact details. we don't know the timeline of this negotiation is, let's put it this way. so we don't going to, what effects the outcome is going to be out of this conversations, negotiations. however, think it shows that lukashenko is a puppet of putin. i don't think it was separate from his side. secondly, again, that he uses belarus, britain uses belarus as a back yard.- he uses belarus, britain uses belarus as a back yard. with regards to and if it transpires, _ belarus as a back yard. with regards to and if it transpires, were - belarus as a back yard. with regards to and if it transpires, were led - belarus as a back yard. with regards to and if it transpires, were led to i to and if it transpires, were led to believe, yevgeny prigozhin moving to belarus, we assume is not going to arrive there by himself, he is going to take some element of wagner with him if it is a few close confidant. potentially more. what do you think he will do once he is there? what is next for yevgeny prigozhin and the wagner pmc? qt next for yevgeny prigozhin and the wagner pmc?— next for yevgeny prigozhin and the wanner pmc? _, , ., * ~ ., wagner pmc? of course, we don't know whether yevgeny _ wagner pmc? of course, we don't know whether yevgeny prigozhin _ wagner pmc? of course, we don't know whether yevgeny prigozhin are - wagner pmc? of course, we don't know whether yevgeny prigozhin are told - whether yevgeny prigozhin are told will travel to belarus. a few

travels for several months, if he's going to stay there for longer, there are so many questions and in what capacity. is he going to lead the wagner group are not. what are these people going to do in belarus? either going to try to ukraine again and this puts lukashenko in belarus in danger because, in the case of an new attempt to invade ukraine, of course, the ukrainians will respond so is this something that lukashenko tried to negotiate? for now, lukashenko might seem victorious might seem as a negotiator but of course, in the longer term, this will effect him as well because yevgeny prigozhin is a target, i think, for both putin and the ukrainians and having him in belarus also puts belarus as a potential target for the ukrainians as well.
