south and south-east of england. the south and south—east of england. through this evening and overnight looks like most of the rain clears away, still some spots of rain around, a bit of low cloud and mist but warmer and more gear than it has been the last few nights. a low of 16 across the south so fairly uncomfortable for some of us. we start tomorrow off with some glimmers of brightness but again mostly cloudy. this cold front will be spreading in from the west, clearing scotland and northern ireland so here it turns brighter and fresher. england and wales if few heavy showers is that weather front moves in. that whether front sinks southwards through wednesday night. starts to invigorate towards the south—east corner so it could be wednesday night into thursday morning we see some very useful rain across east anglia and the south—east. could be wet all day here but elsewhere much brighter, sunny spells and scattered showers,
6:31 pm
most in the north and west, and feel fresh for most of us, high teens, low 20s. across the far south—east we hang on to the humid air, but it won't last, through friday and another whether front pushing from the north—west will bring outbreaks of patchy rain. tending to stay dry further south and east, see you later. thanks. and that's bbc news at six. you can keep up with all the latest developments on the bbc website, from the six team, it's goodbye. the news continues here on bbc one, as now it's time tojoin our colleagues across the nations and regions for the news where you are. hello and welcome to sportsday this tuesday night, i am chetan pathak, coming up in the programme. what next for english and welsh crickets as a damning report finds racism, sexism, and classes them are widespread in the game? it comes on the eve of the second ashes test, england make one change as they look to
6:32 pm
the level the series. back from injury and brightening the mood — millie bright returns to training — as the lionessses step up their preparations for the women's world cup also coming up on sportsday... ready to return to wimbledon, but can andy murray have a good run at this years championships? ido i do believe that i can do it if i am in the right place, physically, mentally, which right now i feel like i am. and climbing the equivalent of mount everest 16 times, we speak to the woman who's scaled scotland's highest mountains in record—breaking time. welcome along, thank you forjoining us. brutal, damning, devastating — those are the words being used
6:33 pm
to describe the findings of a two year long, independent report into discrimination in english and welsh cricket. more than 4,000 people gave evidence to a commission which foundracism, sexism, classism and elitism are "widespread." 50% of respondents said they'd experienced discrimination during the course of the previous five years. most didn't report it because they didn't trust those in charge. today the england and wales cricket board said it'll use this moment to reset cricket whilst england captain ben stokes, one of those who gave evidence, had this to say: to the people involved in the game who have been made to feel unwelcome are unaccepted in the past. i start experiences. crickets it is supposed to support diversity on all fronts because without diversity of this game would not be. we must go
6:34 pm
further and be more diverse because again my love, and millions of worldwide, should be done without fear orjudgment, whether that be fear or judgment, whether that be due fear orjudgment, whether that be due to your upbringing, race or gender. everyone has a different search data, i am ben stokes, born in new zealand, a state educated people who dropped out of school. i needed help with spelling and grammar and speech and i'm currently sitting here as the england men's test captain. it is clear that there is more the game has and as players we want to be part of that to ensure this is truly a sport for everyone. called holding up a mirror to cricket, the report, commisioned in the wake of global movements such as black lives matter and me too, found that "structural and institutional racism" continues to exist within the game. former yorkshire player azeem rafiq — who spoke out in 2020 about the racism he encountered while playing at yorkshire — was one of those who gave evidence. 75% of black respondents,
6:35 pm
with the ecb admitting to the commission there's ?a "lost generation" of black cricketers. where the heck having a conversation between ourselves and somebody turned off the lines and said maurice, smile, we can't see you. coming from jamaica, i knew nothing about racism. absolutely nothing. what was i doing no was that i did not like to be made feel differently. how many people of my background do you see playing professional cricket now? these days, there aren't many of them. it is just little things like that. they have to get it under control. they have to get it under control. they have to fix this, it's like a cancer. where women's cricket is concerened, the report says that a culture of sexism and misogyny endures and women are treated as subordinate to men at all levels, stating that in terms of pay and investment, the women's game receives an "embarrassingly small amount" compared to the men's game.
6:36 pm
there's a lack of female representation among decision—makersand fewer opportunities for women to play at premier grounds. we heard some quite damning and shocking evidence from individuals. we heard of women being constantly stereotyped, demeaned, facing predatory behaviour we heard from woman were having to walk into score boxes and face signs that say no bras allowed. this is 2023 not 1923. the stories were absolutely horrific and it goes to show that the culture in cricket is rotten. the findings of the report also point to elitism and class—based discrimination in cricket. pointing to a lack of cricket in state schools and a talent pathway that's structurally aligned to favour private schools. 58% of men to play for england in 2021 were privately educated,
6:37 pm
that's significantly higher than the 7% of the population who went to private school.ecb chair richard thompson says things need to change: it's the game single biggest priority now. given there have been reports in the past that have not been acted on, this report has to be acted on. this is a seminal moment. i believe now is a mandate for change. i think that change will be accelerated as a result of this report. as i say, we need to go about the recommendations carefully because there is a significant number, which come as a significant cost. i think there won't be any about the level of change that we now require. but what next for cricket? the independent commission has made over a0 recommendations. 0ur sports editor dan roanjoins me now. then, of the recommendations, what stands out for you and how realistic
6:38 pm
is it that there can be achieved? the report describes the recommendations as radical reform. that's what they say is required in this situation from the ecb. the first of them was for there to be an unreserved apology. the ecb has already delivered that as you heard. i'm on the other 43, the most eye—catching is the equalisation of paint between men and women. the icc commission said they wanted to see match fees the same between the england men's and women's teams immediately and the longer term, within six or seven years, the pay for bull england men and women to have parity. whether or not the ecb feel they can afford to do that it will require a significant change in financing, it remains to be seen. they have given themselves three months to look at the raft of proposals. that is one of those that fall into the category where there
6:39 pm
would be a financial impact. as well, the scrapping of the annual picture between the two very prestigious public schools, each on an hydro, which takes place as lords, is seen as a symbol of the elitism and privilege that exists within english privilege. there been an attempt in the past to do that and that there was backlash on the proposal was dropped. this time, with a field they have no choice but to implement that proposal, we will have to wait and see? as well as the independent regulatory body, because of concerns from the report that the ecb has a conflict of interest because it is both a regulator and promoter of english cricket. it is akin to what happened in football, doesn't it? again, the government has no appetite for what they are to be a secretary independent regulators such as has been brought into the bath is up they are willing
6:40 pm
to give the ecb a chance to get their house in order. the government received many funds from source and angen received many funds from source and anger. there is a chance for the ecb to look at his post and come up with change. to look at his post and come up with chance. , ,., , to look at his post and come up with chance. , ., to look at his post and come up with chane. , h, , ., ., to look at his post and come up with chance. , ., ., ., change. our sports editor than one, thank yom — change. our sports editor than one, thank yom dan _ change. our sports editor than one, thank you. dan rowing. _ one other line of cricket news, related to this, on the day of this long awaited report — the ecb has recommended yorkshire are fined £500,000 and deducted points across all formats for their handling of the azeem rafiq racism scandal. the former player said racist language was used "consta ntly" at the club. yorkshire previously admitted four amended charges whilst six fomer players found to have used racist language were sanctioned with fines and bans in may. the cricket discipline commission — the cdc — will announce its sanctions in relation to yorkshire county cricket club soon. ben stokes, who you heard from earlier, was speaking on the eve of the second ashes test which starts tomorrow
6:41 pm
morning at lords. england have madejust one change to their squad as they look to bring themselves level with australia. 0ur correspondentjoe wilson is with the team. lord's is a fascinating place to be on a day when there has been in so much fresh scrutiny about crickets openness and inclusivity. lots of work has been done over the years to try and change the elitist image of it lord's try and change the elitist image of it lords and you can see that advertise. you can also see taken space on the practice ground by a new ashes lounge, to get there, put their main source £1500. under ben stokes, england will continue their attacking coach approach with both selections. there'll be changes at fast bowler, the newcomer doing what against ireland, this is a strata. the only thing that is different is a bigger occasion for them. he has had his first test match and debut

we're going to stay with football. more than 80% of female players at the top european clubs say they suffer regular discomfort because of their football boots. the european clubs association surveyed 350 players from 16 top—tier teams. health experts say it's down to football boots currently on the market being mainly designed for white men: up up until recently, we only had men's football and boots on the market so having the data that needs to be the base for the development of a woman's football boots is a novel and needed an for manufacturers to create a product that is truly designed for women. we know that our foot is notjust a foot is for men and women, it's also different depending on ethnicity and we are try to capture that in the data. so, we know that especially for men's
