we start at sw19, where novak djokovic overcame a rain delay to beat pedro cachin in three sets. the defending champion was a break up in the first before the weather intervened. there was then a delay for 80 minutes, despite the roof being closed. djokovic even helped ground staff to dry the damp grass at one stage. when it eventually resumed, he was able to take control of the match, as cachin was completely outclassed. so, 6—3, 6—3, 7—6, it finished. djokovic is aiming to secure his eighth wimbledon title and match roger federer*s record for a male player. he'll now play australia's jordan thompson, ranked 70th in the world. it isa it is a feeling like no other tournament in the world, walking out on the central court of wimbledon as a defending champion. i know i can always play better, but at the same time, after a long clay court season, coming into wimbledon without any preparation tournament, lead up event, it was kind of expected that i still would probably not be at my 100% level of my

tennis. so hopefully as the tournament progresses, al -- i will —— i will raise my level as well. perhaps the biggest shock of the first round so far came in the women's event — with seventh seed coco gauff crashing out. gauff was beaten in three sets by fellow american sofia kenin, her earliest exit at the tournament. kenin, the 2020 australian open champion, won 6—4, 4—6, 6—2. well, gauff famously beat venus williams in the first round back in 2019, when she was just 15. williams had to fight back from injury after slipping in the opening set but in the end lost out to elina svitolina, the ukrainian winning in straight sets 6—4, 6—3. it was a record 24th appearance at the championships for williams. grass is inherently going to be slippery. you're going to fall at some point. it was just bad luck for me. i started the match perfectly. i was literally killing it, and then i got killed by the grass. yeah, it's not fun right now.

i felt like i was in great form coming into this tournament and great form in the match. it's all very shocking at the moment. this is sports. i'm hitting the ball well. and hopefully i canjust figure out what's happening with me and move forward. and the top seed iga swiatek set her intentions with a win over zhu lin. swiatek dominated from the outset, winning 6—1, 6—3, as she looks to go beyond the fourth round for the first time at wimbledon. it was a mixed day for the british players on home soil. there's a tough test for liam broady in round 2, after he beat constant lestienne. fourth seed casper ruud is his fourth round opponent. a win forjan choinski, too, over dusan lajovic. harriet dart lost to diane parry early on. after taking the first set on a tie break, she lost in three. katie swan was beaten in straight sets by the olympic champion belinda bencic. but better news for jodie burrage, who beat caty mcnally to win her first match at wimbledon.

the 23—year—old is the first summer signing for eddie howe as the side prepare for champions league football this season. tonali joins on a five—year dealfor a reported £55 million fee, which makes him the most expensive italian footballer of all time. tottenham have reached a verbal agreement to sign manor solomon. he was on loan at fulham last season from shakhtar donetsk, after exercising a rule allowing ukraine—based players to suspend their contracts following russia's invasion of the country last year. and steven gerrard's return to management will be with saudi arabian club al—ettifaq. the former liverpool captain has been out of work since being sacked by aston villa last october. he'd been previously reluctant to join the club, but an agreement has now been reached. the fallout continues over the controversial dismissal ofjonny bairstow following england's defeat in the second ashes test against australia at lord's. bairstow wandered out of his crease before the ball was dead, australian wicketkeeper alex carey stumping him with a quick throw. the incident caused consternation among players, the crowd and fans — england captain ben stokes saying it wasn't in the spirit of the game, a sentiment which the british prime minister rishi sunak agreed with.

former england batsman nick compton told me about its significance. i think there are the laws and the rules of the game, which we play within, but i think the spirit of the game sits slightly above that. as a player, i think the more you play, the deeper you get into understanding the spirit of the game, and i think how people treat each other in the heat of sporting competition is, i think, very important. and i think, very important. and i think that spirit is very much dependent on your upbringing, it is dependent on what sort of country you are from, but i think at the heart of it, it's a feeling stuck is a strong feeling that comes down to morality, and i guess your integrity, and the captain of a team is i guess responsible for that decision.— that decision. from the two cam -s that decision. from the two camps point _ that decision. from the two camps point of _ that decision. from the two camps point of view, - that decision. from the two camps point of view, the i camps point of view, the australian camp and the england camp, isjusta

australian camp and the england camp, isjust a varying definition of what that spirit is? australia seemed to be "win at all costs", really. yes. i think i believe in playing hard but fair, so i have no issues with the toughness and with the approach of trying to win at all costs, but there is also a way to win. and ifeel that where it's been hard for me to see both sides, i don't feeljonny was trying to gain an unfair advantage in the game, i don't think jonny was getting any advantage from the dismissal, whereas the examples that australia have used to counter and justify their decision, for me, don't add up. nick compton there. the netherlands have kept their hopes of qualifying for the cricket world cup alive after a comfortable win over oman. vikramjit singh made 110 — his first one day cricket century — as the dutch made 362—7 from 48 overs in a rain—affected match. ayaan khan gave oman hope with a brilliant century of his own, but it wasn't enough — the netherlands winning by 7a runs in the end.

they're trying to make the cricket world cup finals for the first time since 2011. there we go. you can get all the sports news from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.co.uk/sport. but from me and the rest of the team, thanks for watching and we'll see you again soon. hello there. weather conditions are remaining on the unsettled side for the time of year, all thanks to low pressure. we could see some pretty wet weather across the south and the south—east of the country through tuesday. probably the best of the sunshine a bit further northwards. but even here, for much
12:57 am
of the rest of the country away from the south, there'll be plenty of showers around, too. now we've got two weather fronts around. this one's a weakening one in the north. this one is a developing one. and this is going to bring some wet weather to southern britain through this morning. and the rain will pep up, become heavier, in fact, as we head through the morning across the south and the south—east, maybe some thundery bursts in there. this weather fronts across scotland and northern ireland will be weakening as it moves southwards, and on either side, it'll be sunshine and showers. these sorts of temperatures are below par for the time of year, but depending on how much sunshine we get in the south does depend on the temperatures. at the moment, it looks like it could be quite wet. temperatures around the mid—teens for the south—east. so we could see some significant disruptions to play at wimbledon with this rain, which will tend to last through the afternoon, perhaps into the evening, turning heavier as it develops into an area of low pressure. it doe look like the low countries will bear the brunt of that. elsewhere, it's clear spells and a few showers to start wednesday. so there's that area of low pressure heading towards denmark, deepening as it does so. for us, we're in between weather systems on wednesday, so not a bad day, i think.
12:58 am
there will be plenty of sunshine from the word go, but then showers could develop anywhere. most of them will be across scotland and northern ireland, closer to this area of low pressure, and some of them could be heavy, maybe thundery for western scotland. temperature—wise, maybe a degree or so up because the winds will be lighter and maybe some more sunshine around, so up to 21 degrees. and then for thursday, this area of low pressure starts to push towards the west of the country. higher pressure begins to build towards the near continent. so i think thursday, not a bad—looking day. we start to switch our winds up from the south. that will be drawing up some warm air from france and iberia. so, with more sunshine around, winds coming up from the south, we could see higher temperatures, 22 or 23 degrees there. this is the pressure set—up for the end of the week, friday and the weekend. a deep low out to the west. this weather front will bring some thundery rain to the west of the country. but for england and wales, we'll be drawing up a southerly wind. so it could be quite warm on friday, with some sunshine in the south, but with low pressure nearby, there will always been an increasing threat of showers and thunderstorms.
