coming into wimbledon without any preparation tournament lead up event, it's expected that i'm still probably not on my 100% of the level of my tennis, so hopefully as a tournament progresses i raise my level as well. perhaps the biggest shock of the first round so far came in the women's event with 7th seed coco gauff crashing out. she was beaten in three sets by fellow american sofia kenin, her earliest exit at the tournament. kenin, the 2020 australian open champion, won 6—4, 4—6, 6—2. gauff famously beat venus williams in the first round back in 2019 when she was just 15. williams had to fight back from injury after slipping in the opening set, but in the end lost to elina svitolina, the ukrainian winning in straight sets, 6—4, 6—3. it was a record 24th appearance for williams at the championships. grass is inherently going to be slippery and you'll fall at some point. it was just bad luck for me and i started the match perfectly. i was literally killing it and then i got killed

by the grass! yes... it's not not fun right now. i felt like i was in great form coming into this tournament and great form in the match. it's all very shocking at the moment. this is sport. i'm hitting the ball well and hopefully i canjust figure out what's happening with me and move forward. the top seed, iga swiatek, set her intentions with a win over zhu lin. swiatek dominated from the outset, winning 6—1, 6—3 and she looks to go beyond the fourth round for the first time at wimbledon. a mixed day for the british players on home soil with a tough test for liam broady in round two after he beat constant lestienne. fourth seed casper ruud is his second—round opponent. a win too forjan choinski over dusan lajovic. harriet dart lost to diane parry early on after taking the first set on a tie—break, losing in three.

england captain ben stokes saying it was not in the spirit of the game, a sentiment the british prime minister rishi sunak agreed with. the former england captain nick compton told us about its significance. i think there is the laws and rules of the game which we play within, but i think the spirit of the game sits slightly above that. as a player, i think the more you play, the deeper you get into understanding the spirit of the game and i think how people treat each other in the heat of sporting competition is very important. that spirit is very much dependent on your upbringing, dependent on also what country you are from, but at the heart of it, it is a feeling. it is a strong feeling that comes down to morality and i guess your integrity, and the captain of the team is responsible
2:54 am
for that position. from the two camps* point of view, is it a varying definition of what the spirit is? australia seems to be win at all costs, really. yes, i believe in playing hard but fair, so i have no issues with the toughness and with the approach of trying to win at all costs, but there is also a way to win and i feel that where it has been hard for me to kind of see both sides is i don't feeljohnny was trying to gain an unfair advantage in the game and that was cut short. i don't thinkjohnny was getting any advantage from the dismissal, whereas the examples that australia have used a try to counter orjustify the decision for me don't add up. nick compton. the netherlands have kept their hopes of qualifying with cricket world cup alive after a comfortable win over oman. vikram singh made 110, his first one—day cricket

2:56 am
there'll be plenty of showers around, too. now we've got two weather fronts around. this one's a weakening one in the north. this one is a developing one. and this is going to bring some wet weather to southern britain through this morning. and the rain will pep up, become heavier, in fact, as we head through the morning across the south and the south—east, maybe some thundery bursts in there. this weather front across scotland and northern ireland will be weakening as it moves southwards, and on either side, it'll be sunshine and showers. these sorts of temperatures are below par for the time of year, but depending on how much sunshine we get in the south does depend on the temperatures. at the moment, it looks like it could be quite wet. temperatures around the mid—teens for the southeast. so we could see some significant disruptions to play at wimbledon with this rain, which will tend to last through the afternoon, perhaps into the evening, turning heavier as it develops into an area of low pressure. it does look like the low countries will bear the brunt of that. elsewhere, it's clear spells and a few showers to start wednesday. so there's that area of low pressure heading towards denmark, deepening as it does so. for us, we're in between weather systems on wednesday,
2:57 am
so not a bad day, i think. there will be plenty of sunshine from the word go, but then showers could develop anywhere. most of them will be across scotland and northern ireland, closer to this area of low pressure, and some of them could be heavy, maybe thundery for western scotland. temperature—wise, maybe a degree or so up because the winds will be lighter and maybe some more sunshine around, so up to 21 degrees. and then for thursday, this area of low pressure starts to push towards the west of the country. higher pressure begins to build towards the near continent. so i think thursday, not a bad—looking day. we start to switch our winds up from the south. that will be drawing up some warm airfrom france and iberia. so, with more sunshine around, winds coming up from the south, we could see higher temperatures, 22 or 23 degrees there. this is the pressure set—up for the end of the week, friday and the weekend. a deep low out to the west. this weather front will bring some thundery rain to the west of the country. but for england and wales, we'll be drawing up a southerly wind. so it could be quite warm on friday, with some sunshine in the south, but with low pressure nearby,
